Walsall 2 Doncaster 0 - George Bennett analysis
Transcript
00:00Good evening, Walsall fans. The Sadlers are soaring to heavy heights in League 2.
00:08That's now nine points clear at the top of the table with a game in hand
00:15after they made it five wins on the spin in the league with a 2-0 success
00:22over Doncaster Rovers at Bescott. Matt Sadler made one change from the victory
00:31over Harrogate Town on the weekend as Jimmy and Matt came back in after serving
00:36his one-match suspension to captain this side and Albert Adoma dropped to the bench.
00:43And it was a first half of limited opportunities. Tommy Simpkin was forced
00:49into a save by Billy Sharp, who was then flagged offside for Doncaster.
00:55And Nathan Lowe came within a whisker from getting his studs to the ball
00:59at the back post when Charlie Lakin drove the ball across the penalty area.
01:02But Walsall came out flying in that second half, just as they have done
01:06so many times this season. And it's actually the last time Walsall conceded
01:11a first-half goal in the league was on the 5th of October in the 2-2 draw
01:16at Chesterfield. So a fantastic first-half record. Walsall then built on that
01:20in the second half. Two minutes after the restart, Nathan Lowe added to his stunning
01:26tally in front of goal with his 14th of the season in all competitions,
01:31his 11th in the league. Connor Barrett with a low centre and Lowe buried the ball.
01:36Beyond the Doncaster goalkeeper, it was then very much Walsall who were knocking
01:42on the door for that second goal. Harry Williams hit the post. Jamie Jellis
01:47had an effort saved. Taylor Allen dropped to the shoulder, floored his man
01:53and blasted one across the face, a goal wide of the post. But eventually,
01:58Williams made it second time lucky. He wasn't going to be denied by the post.
02:03This time, a powerful header into the corner to make it 2-0.
02:08Tommy Simkin was forced into a late save by Josh Emanuel with a darting header
02:13but he preserved his fourth clean sheet in a row. And Walsall sitting pretty
02:19at the top. You look at the opposition which they've beaten in recent weeks,
02:25right at the top end of the table. Port Vale, Doncaster today, Wimbledon,
02:31Notts County, a point against Crewe earlier in the season. So, very much
02:38looking strong at the moment and it's 11 points over those in the trailing
02:44in the play-off places. So, 2-0 here, Newport on Sunday.
