00:12Former Transport Minister Weeka Siong has urged the government to set up a task force
00:17to probe the five-vehicle crash in Malacca last night that claimed seven lives, including those of five family members.
00:24In a Facebook post, Wee expressed his condolences, adding that a special team was needed to thoroughly investigate the accident to prevent a repeat of such incidents.
00:33The MCA president also expressed concern over the trend of fatal accidents involving heavy vehicles over the year,
00:40with 825 reported by the cops up until October, an average of about three lorry crashes a day.
00:46He said the authorities needed to take the matter seriously to prevent further loss of life as this was a very worrying trend.
00:53Initial investigations into the Malacca crash revealed that it was caused by the front right tyre of a lorry being dislodged and landing in the middle lane.
01:02Earlier reports indicated seven fatalities, three men, three women, and a baby girl.
01:08Thirty-three people were also injured.
