00:52Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Alejandra Garcia from Telesur studios in Havana,
00:56Cuba.
00:57We begin with the news, stay with us.
01:16At least nine people were killed Thursday as a result of a crossfire between Yemeni
01:21and Israeli military forces after short-range ballistic missiles were fired at Tel Aviv.
01:27Al-Masida, a Houthi media channel, said that Israel, for its part, launched a series of
01:33attacks against Yemen's capital Sana'a and the city of Hodeidah, located in the Houthi-controlled
01:39region of the country.
01:40It also said that strikes on the al-Saleh port had killed nine people, while another
01:46person was injured in the strike on the oil facility.
01:50Yemeni military forces continue to attack targets in Israeli-occupied territories.
02:00The Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah condemned the Israel regime's aggression
02:05against Yemen, which caused the death of at least nine people.
02:08Through a communique, Hezbollah emphasized that the Israeli attack targeted civilian
02:13installations, including power plants, in violation of all international laws.
02:18Furthermore, the Lebanese resistance movement pointed out that this aggression reflects
02:23the ongoing Zionist brutality and serves as an extension of the open war against the peoples
02:29of the Arab nation, particularly Palestine, Lebanon and Syria.
02:34In this regard, Hezbollah called on the unity of the free nations of the world and the resistance
02:39forces to confront the aggression against the people of the region.
02:48Former Palestinian prisoners denounced as torture by occupation forces in Israeli prisons
02:54south of Gaza.
02:56The woman, identified as Khaloud Hanone, was held by the Israeli army during a raid on
03:02Al-Ali Baptist Hospital in southern Gaza.
03:05Hanone confirmed the violent practices in the prisons, including constant transfers
03:10from one camp to another where they were abused, beaten and deprived of basic rights.
03:17In this regard, the Committee for Prisoners' and Ex-Prisoners' Affairs, together with
03:21the Palestinian Prisoners' Club, ratified the complaint of the application of torture
03:26and humiliation against the Palestinian civilians who remain under illegal Israeli custody.
03:35Meanwhile, Gazan authorities registered an Israeli massacre that leaves at least seven
03:43civilians killed as the occupation forces continue their land incursions and bombardments
03:48against the Gaza Strip.
03:50In this context, international organisations accuse Israel of causing displacement of the
03:55civilian population in order to fulfil its expansionist plans.
04:00According to health authorities, the number of Palestinians killed exceeds 45,000, while
04:05the number of wounded totals more than 107,000 as part of the genocide being carried out
04:12by Israel against the Palestinian people.
04:29Russian armed forces launched a long-range precision-guided weapons strike against Kaif
04:35military targets in response to the Ukrainian aggression towards a defence facility.
04:40The Russian Defence Ministry reported having hit a command centre of the Ukrainian Security
04:46Service and positions of the Patriot anti-aircraft missile system.
04:51Moreover, the Russian armed forces struck the launch design bureau headquartered in
04:57Kaif, which develops and manufactures Neptune missile systems and Olka ground-launched cruise
05:04missiles.
05:05On Thursday, the Ministry announced that on December 18th, the Ukrainian army targeted
05:09a southwestern Russian company with six US-made missiles and four Storm Shadow cruise missiles.
05:39Welcome back to From the South.
05:52In Venezuela, the President, Nicolás Maduro, denounced the organisation PROVEA of being
05:57linked to the CIA.
05:59The Venezuelan President assured that the non-governmental organisation PROVEA has been
06:04collaborating with the US Secret Service since 1990.
06:08Likewise, he emphasised that democratic projects will be carried out in the country, contrary
06:14to those of the Western bourgeoisie.
06:17Furthermore, President Maduro announced that in 1996 he was kidnapped and sent to prison
06:23by former dictator of Intelligence Directorate of Intelligence and Prevention, DISIP, after
06:31a director of PROVEA turned him in.
06:34Furthermore, he declared that peace will triumph in the country in the face of any threat.
06:48PROVEA comes out, which is not PROVEA, but PROCIA, because PROVEA has been working for
06:55the CIA since the 1990s.
06:59A director of PROVEA, back then, handed me over to the DISIP, set up a trap for me, and
07:06they caught me at the gates of El Conde Hotel.
07:10I haven't told you about that yet.
07:13Someday I will.
07:15Since that time, since the time they took me prisoner in 1996, when they kidnapped me
07:21on the streets, PROVEA was already working with the CIA.
07:27Then they come out to say that they are political prisoners.
07:31They are not political prisoners.
07:33They are people who burned, who attacked, who threatened, who assaulted, who destroyed
07:39and killed.
07:40They tried to terrorize Quibor, but nobody terrorizes Quibor or Venezuela.
07:47Neither terror nor fascism won.
07:51Peace and life did.
07:54In Argentina, the government authorized this Thursday two office officials to request support
08:00from the armed forces in places they consider a strategic value for the state.
08:05The executive power authorized the Ministers of Defense, Luis Petri, and of Security, Patricia
08:11Bullrich, to request support from military personnel or from provincial police forces
08:17and from the city of Buenos Aires in situations of internal commotion.
08:22The decree calls into question the defense law, since it does not clearly or explicitly
08:28define what a strategic value objective is, therefore it gives national officials the
08:33power to define or redefine this concept.
08:41Also in Argentina, the National Institute of Statistics and Census reports that unemployment
08:47affected 6.9% of the population living in metropolitan areas in the third quarter of
08:53this year.
08:54This data shows an increase of 1.2% in relation to the same quarter of the previous year.
09:01Similarly, the data shows that the number of unemployed rose from 814,000 to 994,000
09:10in just one year in the 31 metropolitan areas analyzed.
09:15Taking into account the entire population of Argentina, this means that almost 1.6 million
09:21people are looking for work and are unable to find it, whereas a year ago this phenomenon
09:28affected just under 1.3 million people.
09:37In Argentina, this December 20th marks 23 years of the fall of the government of La
09:43Alianza, led by Fernando de la Rúa, who left the Casa Rosada in a helicopter after
09:48two years in office.
09:50In the midst of economic, political and social collapse, the government of Fernando de la
09:55Rúa was faced with a social outburst of unprecedented proportions, which was repressed under a
10:01state siege, leaving 38 dead, hundreds injured and 4,000 people arrested.
10:0723 years after the so-called Argentinazo, as each year an event in Plaza de Mayo will
10:13take place, the march will be in defense of public health and education, for wages, retirement
10:19and pensions, for the right to protest and for all the living conditions and democratic
10:24rights, as well as to overthrow the base law of Javier Millet.
10:36In the United States, the House of the Republicans on Thursday rejected a bipartisan bill to
10:42avert a partial government shutdown at the request of President-elect Donald Trump.
10:48Trump urged Republicans in Congress to instead pass a legislation that would increase the
10:53government's debt authority, while expressing support for raising the debt ceiling.
10:58If Congress fails to reach a funding deal, a government shutdown could begin next Saturday.
11:04According to local media, Trump was not in favor of the Republican Party approving the
11:09bipartisan budget bill because it included billions of dollars in spending.
11:20Also in the United States, Luigi Maggion was indicted on four federal charges for the murder
11:26of Chief Executive Officer of the UnitedHealthcare Insurance Company Brian Thompson.
11:33The defendant was flown from Pennsylvania to the state of New York, where he was presented
11:38in court for the prosecution to bring the federal indictment.
11:42The prosecution alleged that Maggion traveled from Georgia to New York on November 24th
11:49with the intent to harass, intimidate and kill Thompson, which he accomplished on December
11:554th using a firearm.
11:57Likewise, some passages of the notebook seized from the defendant were disclosed in which
12:03he expresses hostility towards the health insurance industry and wealthy executives
12:08in particular.
12:15In the United States, two workers were killed and three people were injured when a freight
12:20train collided with a trailer in a town in the south of Texas.
12:25The accident took place at five in the afternoon following a collision between the train and
12:31the vehicle, which was stopped at the crossing in the town of Pecos.
12:35Local police chief Lisa Tarango said the crash caused three cars carrying hazardous materials
12:41to derail, but there were no chemical leaks.
12:45One of the injured was taken to the Odessa hospital in critical condition, while the
12:50two others were taken away with minor injuries.
13:20Welcome back to From the South.
13:37In Haiti, a new state of emergency was declared after the Council of Ministers imposed it,
13:42citing growing insecurity and violence in the country.
13:46This will take place from next Sunday in a context of massacres by armed gangs against
13:51the civilian population.
13:53The reason given was to facilitate the various interventions of the Haitian National Police
13:59in the fight against insecurity and to address the agricultural and food crisis in the country.
14:04The one-month state of emergency will last from December 22, 2024 to January 21, 2025.
14:18A lawmaker who was murdered in Antigua and Barbuda last month was buried on Thursday
14:24following an official funeral.
14:2654-year-old Asad Michael was fatally stabbed at his home on November 5, the first time
14:33in the country's history that a legislator met such an untimely demise.
14:38The crime's defendant is now before the court.
14:41Patrice Martin of the Antigua and Barbuda Broadcasting Services reports on the tributes
14:46at the funeral.
14:47Today, we come together to celebrate the extraordinary life and enduring legacy of the Honourable
14:56Asad Anthony Michael.
14:59While the weight of his loss is immeasurable, we stand united in gratitude for a life lived
15:06with purpose, passion and an unyielding commitment to the people of Antigua and Barbuda.
15:13Sister of the late MP Theresa Ann Michael delivered the eulogy at the official funeral
15:18at the Holy Family Cathedral.
15:20Though a somber gathering, it was also a celebration for the man who touched many lives throughout
15:25his over two decades of public service.
15:28A large number of people turned out to pay their final respects, one of whom was family
15:32friend Dr. Leon Errol Court.
15:35His passion for service was fuelled by a deep love for his country.
15:42Through his tireless efforts and immeasurable philanthropic contributions, he left an indelible
15:49mark on the lives he touched.
15:52Former Member of Parliament for St. Philip's South, Lennox Weston, reflected on the life
15:56and service of his student at Sunnyside Primary, who would later become his political comrade.
16:02Asad succeeded in leaving major footprints and a political legacy that will influence
16:08politics for a long time.
16:10According to Weston, Michael's priority remained the people of the St. Peter constituency.
16:16Weston said he possessed a competitive nature, one he used to his advantage during campaigning
16:21and election seasons.
16:23Niece of the former MP, Marissa Michael, an aspiring surgeon, attributes her dedication
16:28and calling to the teachings of her uncle.
16:31She echoed some of his advice that remains etched in her memory.
16:35Uncle Asad ensured I understood the value of service and respect.
16:43Though a silver spoon may have been on my place setting, I learned to serve with it,
16:49whether fetching drinks for guests or helping with hors d'oeuvres.
16:55These lessons of hospitality and humility have shaped both my personal and professional
17:01journey.
17:03I return to the question of who am I, one that has become even more poignant as I interview
17:10for a surgical residency.
17:13When I get asked what makes me unique, I say two things.
17:18My ability to connect with people from all backgrounds and my unwavering dedication to
17:24achieving my goals.
17:26These traits are both a direct reflection of Uncle Asad's influence and, to some extent,
17:34common personality traits we share.
17:37There was a viewing of the late MP's body at his home in Dry Hill early Thursday morning.
17:41The location where he met his untimely death on November 5, 2024.
17:47Following the funeral service, there was a procession to the St. John's Public Cemetery
17:50for interment.
17:51Several onlookers gathered along the sides of the road as the cortege passed.
18:04At the cemetery, a gun salute and presentation of the flag from the coffin were part of the
18:09solemnity of the occasion.
18:11Treats were laid by officials and members of the family.
18:16The outburst of a riot in the Social Reintegration Center of Southeastern Tabasco, Mexico, claimed
18:22at least seven inmates' lives and then injured, including four officers.
18:28Violence and crossfire began at 5 a.m. on Thursday morning when security officers entered
18:33the center to transfer two prison leaders.
18:36In this context, the State Public Prosecutor's Office opened a file to clarify the incident.
18:41In addition to the Tabasco riot, revolts have been staged in several localities of the state
18:47capital, Villahermosa, where around 10 vehicles were burned down.
18:57This December 20th marks 35 years of the US invasion of Panama to capture General Manuel
19:04Antonio Noriega.
19:0635 years ago, Panama was a laboratory for the most advanced warfare technology designed
19:12by the United States.
19:13The so-called Just Cause operation had the objective of capturing Manuel Antonio Noriega.
19:19As a result, this brought death, especially in poor neighborhoods.
19:23In addition to human losses, the aggression left thousands of people homeless.
19:28The US troops made no effort to limit themselves to military targets and avoid damage to the
19:34lives and property of the civilian population.
19:41In Cuba, authorities reiterated on Thursday the call for a popular march in front of the
19:47US Embassy to be held on Friday, December 20th against the blockade.
19:52The march, called by the plenary session of the Central Committee of the Communist Party,
19:56will take place at the end of the session of the National Assembly of People's Power,
20:01with the aim of expressing, in front of the US Embassy in Havana, the condemnation of
20:06the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by Washington and the permanence of
20:11Cuba in the illegitimate list of countries allegedly supporting terrorism.
