00:05as escalating medical insurance premiums,

00:07driven by a 12.6% medical inflation rate in 2023,

00:11threaten their financial stability.

00:14Public health consultant and physician, Dr. Faisal Izwan Mustafa,

00:17warns that proposed premium increases, ranging from 40% to 70%,

00:22may push more M40 households to terminate their policies.

00:26He said this would leave the middle class exposed to catastrophic health expenses

00:30as they may be unable to afford unexpected medical bills,

00:34forcing them to rely on the already strained public healthcare system.

00:38Azrul Muhammad Kalib, CEO of the Galen Centre for Health and Social Policy,

00:42said soaring medical inflation and insurance premiums

00:45is a financial disaster waiting to happen for many Malaysians.

00:50He said this inflation would lead to an increase in out-of-pocket payments

00:54for health expenditures, particularly affecting older, vulnerable individuals

00:58at risk of financial catastrophe from a single medical incident.

01:02Azrul also criticized the lack of regulation on medical bills

01:05from providers like private hospitals,

01:07and called for the establishment of an independent statutory commission

01:11to oversee and regulate healthcare charges.
