00:00For decades, the need for Malay unity has been championed by many political leaders,
00:07who have all formed their own approach to how it should be achieved.
00:12Such is the case for former Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad and UMNO stalwart Tengku
00:17Razali Hamzah.
00:19It was apparent from separate interviews with FMT that, for Mahathir, the end justifies
00:24the means, while the opposite is true for Razali.
00:29The platform didn't matter to Mahathir nearly as much as the cause.
00:33His approach to uniting the Malays remained consistent whether he was with UMNO, Persatu,
00:38Pejuang or Kerakan Tanah Air, come together or risk being politically and economically
00:45weak.
00:47But Razali, also known as Kuli, believed that it was UMNO that brought the Malays together.
00:53However, Mahathir said, the Malays are currently deeply divided, caused by splinter parties
01:11formed during the time of Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and Najib Raza.
01:41Despite the criticisms, Razali is determined to stick with UMNO.
01:50His loyalty to the party remained unwavering, except when he formed Semangat 46 in the 1980s,
01:57following a well-publicised clash with Mahathir.
02:00However, Razali later disbanded the splinter party and rejoined UMNO in 1996.
02:07Whether you like it or not, UMNO was born at the right time and it helps provide the
02:14answers for the Malays who are really left on their own.
02:25The Malays were brought together and became a nation of themselves, a bangsa.
02:32I thought they were just a parochial grouping of Kelantanese, Johorians, Selangorians, Penang people.
