00:00Thousands upon thousands of sacks of alleged smuggled imported rice worth hundreds of millions
00:05of pesos have been seized by the Bureau of Customs Intelligence and Investigation Services
00:11or CIIS, the Philippine Coast Guard, and the Department of Agriculture in Balagtas, Bulacan.
00:17A total of nine warehouses were raided on Monday evening after multiple intelligence
00:23reports were received by the BOC of the alleged smuggled goods in storage.
00:29According to BOC-CIIS Chief Alvin Enciso, some of the warehouses allegedly mix and repack
00:37the smuggled imported rice with local grain to boost quantity and sell at a higher retail
00:42value.
00:43Enciso also emphasized on the sacks being possibly hoarded from previous years when
00:49wholesale prices were low, hence the thousands stockpiled collecting thick layers of dust
00:55in the warehouses.
00:57The BOC assured the seized items, once checked and examined, may possibly be repurposed by
01:03the government by donating them to the Department of Social Welfare and Development so long
01:08as it passes human consumption muster.
