00:00All right, we're talking about last night's 12-6 49er loss to the Rams.
00:05They're all but eliminated this year from the postseason and it
00:11kind of puts an exclamation point on just an absolutely
00:16disappointing season for the San Francisco 49ers.
00:19Gu Kyle Shanahan talked to the media last night, obviously after the game. We heard a lot
00:25from him after the game. He was somber, man. Yeah, he just
00:29just got done talking to the media on a conference call and
00:33this is going to be Kyle Shanahan. It's about eight minutes. This is from his conference call today with reporters,
00:40so he'll have updates on anything that this group of writers has asked him.
00:45So Kyle Shanahan, and once again, it's from today, just minutes ago.
00:50All right, guys. Injuries from the game. Jair Brown had a groin. I thought pretty good though.
00:57He'll be day-to-day. Dee Winters, same thing with his neck. He'll be day-to-day also. Greenlaw with his Achilles slash knee.
01:04Checked out good, so he's dealing with some soreness.
01:07He should be good going forward. He'll be day-to-day and that's it. It's in the game. Kyle, what are your plans to do with Devontae Campbell?
01:16We're working through the semantics of exactly how to
01:20deal with it, but I mean, you guys heard from me last night. You guys heard from our players.
01:25His actions from the game is not something you can do to your team or your teammates and still
01:29have to be a part of our team.
01:32We're working through exactly the semantics of it right now, but
01:35we'll handle the situation appropriately.
01:38Has there been any contact with him, Kyle? Has he further explained if anything was going on, why he did that?
01:45No.
01:47Kyle, when Fred had to leave in the second quarter for a snap,
01:55Flanagan Fowles went in instead of Campbell
01:58to replace him. Did you have any sense
02:02before
02:03that something may have been off with Devontae?
02:08Why didn't he go in for that snap and why did Flanagan Fowles
02:13replace Fred?
02:15Because he wasn't by the teammates at all and was distant from everyone. I didn't notice until the third quarter.
02:21Dre came out and D went in. Then I got on the defense and said,
02:24what's going on? And then the coaches told me and
02:28I judged Devontae and found out. It was pretty simple to see how he was and then we moved on with our lives after that.
02:35What's your perspective, just where the team is right now and what your goals are and what you want to
02:42accomplish the rest of the season just to, you know, basically, in essence, set yourself up for
02:502025? I want us to show up next week as we showed up for this game. I thought our guys came out ready to play.
02:55I thought they
02:57were extremely physical. I thought our guys battled. I don't think we played very well on offense.
03:01I thought there's a few key plays that we could have made that would have been the difference in the game.
03:05But I thought our guys sold out for that game and I expect them to sell out here for these next three games.
03:10Every time we have our uniform, we go out on the field, regardless of the situation, I expect us to play a certain way.
03:16That's the standard of how we do things and if you can't play to that standard,
03:22make it easy for us and show us that and we'll be a part of it.
03:25I realize this has been happening all season, but will you start to work in younger players,
03:32less experienced players with an eye toward
03:362025?
03:37I mean, if anybody has an opportunity that we think can help us going forward and stuff,
03:42we would definitely do that. You kind of said in your question, we've already been doing that.
03:47We are playing a lot of young players right now and a lot of guys got their opportunities early because of injuries and
03:53they're continuing to get it.
03:56There's not a lot of options there after that,
03:58but we're going to keep playing the guys that give us the best chance to win every week and that's what we plan on doing.
04:04Kyle, what have you seen from Jacob Cavan as a returner?
04:08It seems like he's come really close to breaking one and he actually did a really good job in the Hidden Yards department last night.
04:13What have you seen from him as a returner and
04:16what has led to him getting more snapshots?
04:19We've seen him really in the last month. We felt he'd take a step forward in his returning. He missed that game with a concussion
04:25and when we came back from that, we felt like he's been close.
04:29We think he's improved throughout this year and finishing strong right now
04:32and hopefully he'll finish even stronger in these next three games.
04:35Kyle, now that you can look back on it just by several hours ago,
04:39was Dre Greenlaw's performance last night maybe even a little more amazing than you thought at first glance?
04:45I mean,
04:47I thought it was pretty amazing at first glance and so it kind of just confirmed it. I mean, Dre is an amazing player and
04:53it's not the first time he did that.
04:56A few years ago, I think 21 it was.
04:58I'm pretty sure it was 21. His first game
05:00he got hurt in week one versus Detroit and
05:02the next time he played was in week 17 versus the Rams when we needed to win that to go to the playoffs.
05:07And that game, I thought he had
05:10one of the best games I've ever seen from a linebacker play and
05:13it was looking a lot like that last night too. Exactly the same. It was just only a half a football.
05:18It was amazing.
05:20Kyle, what gives you hope for a better season in 2025?
05:24I'll talk about 2025. I mean, when we get to 2025, but
05:31you have hope every year. You put together the best team possible. You go and practice and you go out there and you battle.
05:37That's what you do every single offseason. You figure out how to
05:41get the best players possible. It's your free agency in the draft.
05:43You try to keep your best players as possible. You go to work and you show up for week one.
05:48Kyle, just to be clear, you don't expect Devondre Campbell to be on the team week 16 and beyond? No, I don't.
05:56Kyle, what would have been your assessment of how Devondre played this year and kind of how he fit in
06:01previous to what happened last night?
06:03I mean,
06:05we were needing a starting caliber linebacker to fill in for Dre until he could get back.
06:09We didn't know how long that would be. I thought he had some ups and downs throughout the year.
06:13I thought he started off slow.
06:15I thought he got more used to our defense and how we expected people to play and I thought he improved throughout the year.
06:21Kyle, to
06:22play an entire game and not get in the red zone, has that happened before in your career as a play caller to your knowledge?
06:29I'm not sure.
06:31Exactly.
06:32I don't remember. I've been doing it for a long time.
06:36Kyle, after the game when you talked about Brock's interception,
06:40it almost sounded like
06:43he felt like he made the right read.
06:46Brock said that on second down, he wished he had just checked it down, but at the time he let go of that ball,
06:53did you think that that was the right decision that he made?
06:56Yeah, I think you got to put yourself in the quarterback's shoes.
06:59I mean, when you have a remote in your hand, you can see it all. You got a zoning corner
07:03that was failing a little bit and
07:05never want to throw that, as we'd say, when the receiver's chasing a ghost.
07:09But there is a pass rush and stuff. He's holding the safety and when you look out there, the corner did buckle.
07:15And that's why there was some contact
07:17which slowed Juwan down because the corner did stop on the double move and
07:22collided with Juwan. That's why he couldn't get back going and catch up to the ball.
07:26So, yeah, when the guys get a cover three and they're off, you'd love to get to a check down.
07:32There's a much better percentage of it.
07:35But that's not so easy. So I understand why he threw it.
07:39So I wish I didn't call it. So there wasn't any indecision.
07:42We had an opportunity, but
07:45the corner ended up making a good play and we didn't get it done.
07:48Kyle, after the game, Debo was obviously frustrated with his performance.
07:51What did you see from his performance after looking at the film and did you have any chance to talk to him at all
07:56after the game?
07:58No, I didn't get a chance to talk to him after the game, but I mean, I think it was pretty obvious.
08:02You know, Debo did
08:05the best of his opportunities and the best opportunity he had.
08:09He got to look the ball in. He got too excited probably trying to score and
08:13he had the same route earlier in the game out of the backfield
08:17on a first and ten where he gained about six yards and on this one they blipped so he had a good look and
08:23kind of looked it in and had a big drop.
08:26So that was about it.
08:28Kyle, is there any update with Trent Williams and what he plans to do the next few games?
08:34He's trying to get back. It's just been a frustrating injury for him.
08:39It hasn't healed like here we would like.
08:43Hopefully, having these 10 more days before our next game, hopefully that gives a better chance, but
08:51Trent's doing everything he can to get back, but he is injured and
08:55with the injury, there is a chance he will get back. It has to start recovering and it's been a lot slower than anticipated.
09:03Kyle, did you tell Devontae to go to the locker room after you talked to him?
09:07No, I didn't.
09:09He just went on his own?
09:12I'm not sure exactly what led to him leaving the field, but
09:17once I found out he wasn't playing, I moved on to people who we could count on.
09:21Nick Fosa came out of the game fine, I'm assuming because he wasn't on the injury report?
09:27Yeah, no report of anything today. So it was awesome to get Nick back and
09:32he really helped us and those are good signs that they didn't tell me about anything today.
09:37Thank you. Have a good weekend.
09:39All right, that was Kyle Shanahan just moments ago. He met with the media on a conference call eight minutes long.
09:45He addressed
09:47most of the things that happened last night including Devontae Campbell walking off the field
09:52and
09:53he said they're in the midst of figuring out what they're going to do with him.
09:56And he said, you know, we got to figure out some semantics. Yeah, which means
10:02just verbiage on how they're going to lose the guy.
10:05I got to tell you, man, sitting down not knowing what to expect last night, it felt like a playoff game. You even
10:11put on the vine.
10:13This is a good game. I mean it was ugly, but you know there were stakes involved.
10:17And Stani, I got to say something. I got to double back. I talked about and I take the L.
10:21There was no button, but there was a button that the defense hit and they were activated.
10:27And I know we can go, anybody out there can go to the fourth quarter
10:31once that interception happened in five minutes and 20 seconds left. The Rams just put on a master class on how to
10:38you know, run the clock out third and four.
10:41Parkinson's, nobody even guarding him and he's wide open. He gets the first down to clinch it.
10:46But Stani, I got to say this and I'm ready to say it about the season.
10:50The Niners offense is the biggest culprit on why they didn't reach their goals.
10:55And the defense has more of a injury excuse if you're into that.
11:01But last night they were flying around. They had Stafford who had scored
11:0740 points on Buffalo. I mean they didn't get their first down into the what second quarter like
11:13It was good enough for the team to almost win going away. I know what sports don't work that way
11:19But there's no way I can watch that game after I turned the tv off thinking
11:25Okay, both were equally as bad the offense and the defense was balling out
11:30And i'm sitting here thinking if if somebody offensively can make a play
11:36You know, maybe maybe the Niners win this game and you got action, but there's one play when we talk about
11:43um
11:44Early on in in the games down in the first half when we talk about kyle
11:48How much is he a part of this a third and six?
11:52And they dial up a handoff to debo samuel like that was offensive to me
11:58And of course it went for nothing, but i'm thinking to myself how in the holy hell
12:04Can you call a third and six with brock purdy kittle debo jennings?
12:09in conditions
12:11And decide that that's the play you want and that was just a stain stony
12:17And and collectively this was probably one of the worst offensive performances
12:22Of the season as a whole, but I don't know if you remember that third and six. Let's give it to debo
12:29And the ram snuffed that crap out you're listening to 95.7 the game kgmz fm and hd1 san francisco
12:36Always live on the free odyssey app twitch and youtube powered by first norcal credit union
12:40I mean when I look at this team and you want to I don't know why I just thought of that play
12:44You want to wrote it down?
12:45You know if you want to point blame and you want to say well, it's 50 off, you know
12:4940 offense 40 defense 20 special teams
12:52I'm not going to argue with you if you want to say it was 50 the offense 30 the defense 20
12:59percent special teams
13:01I'll i'm not going to argue with you. Um
13:04But if we're going to talk specifically about the defense
13:08I mean what if if they ran out of gas well if they were so great, you know, the time of possession was a blowout
13:15It was a blowout and you know how that works when you're going three and out like the niners did and the rams did too
13:20But you know what?
13:21I mean, they they got a they found a groove that five minutes that 520 was big and I see where you're going
13:27But it was three three and a half to a prolific offense. That's what i'm calling the rams offense and stony at some point
13:33They need help and they didn't get it from their offense
13:37I mean and that's been a consistent theme this season and I think last night real quick
13:42This is the time to call it out that d played well enough into the fourth quarter
13:47They were begging for the offense to make a play and they just couldn't I mean i'm not i'm not gonna
13:53Challenge you on the offense
13:55But I will say this when you're playing in a game and it's six to three
14:00All right, so nobody's scoring the bottom line is your defense gave up three scores
14:06in the fourth quarter
14:08and
14:09that's
14:10Been what's happening all year long?
14:13Nobody's saying well the defense lost in the game, but the reality of the situation is over the course of this season last night's game
14:21Was the same game we've seen them lose four times
14:25and both sides of the ball had
14:28Opportunities to win games with the big play and last night the offense
14:33Couldn't score. They had an opportunity
14:36Debo didn't catch a ball and then outside of that they had nothing offensively defensively
14:41They came out played a great first half great into the third quarter. Yeah, and they needed they needed
14:48They needed the defense to either be
14:50You know either play
14:52Shutout football or they needed the 49ers to score more points
14:57And it's been one or the other all year long for this team
15:00They just have not played complimentary football and I love the reporter. I forget his name who asked kyle. Have you ever coached a team?
15:07That didn't get in the red zone like they didn't even get in there just think about that. That's how
15:12Inept the offense wasn't in the million dollar million dollar question moving forward
15:17Stiney is why and I do believe kyle's a part of it. So whatever they plan on doing just next week
15:25I just watched that game and I felt bad for the defense like man
15:29The green law and the green law went out and things kind of changed a bit
15:32And then you had the campbell situation and watching the game in real time
15:35I didn't know what was going on, but I was like that is one that's really got to hurt to where
15:41You did the defense no favors man. None. Let's go to shantay in san francisco
15:48Shantay in san francisco, what's going on my man?
15:54Shantay it's a lady. Hey guys. How are you? Thank you for taking my call. Um
16:02Just listening to I had some points I wanted to say and listening to kyle's press conference
16:09he
16:11Made my points. Um karl is a good coach
16:15And guru you made this point talking about his play calling he's not a good offensive coordinator
16:21I think we've seen that it's up for debate
16:25Um, I don't think he's going to give that up if we want to continue to move forward
16:30Making these kinds of calls
16:33With him as at at both we're going to be another
16:38Dallas cowboy jerry jones
16:41Franchise where we're just going to be stuck with kyle and
16:46You know genius play that's number one number two
16:51This whole party debate. Um, I know he's a nice guy
16:56uh
16:57apparently this is why people are just soft with him, but
17:02He is not the answer
17:03He is not the answer
17:06Nice guy, I know he's a sentimental favorite. He can't throw in the rain all the
17:13Mother of nature elements must be perfect
17:17And if that's the case for him, that's problematic
17:20He's not a 60 million dollar man. I don't care what the market is and if niner's going to make that decision
17:27We're going to be another 10 years in this drought with him
17:31That's on purdy and the last point I want to make is on defense
17:36thoracin
17:38Has been a nightmare
17:40Everyone had all the smoke for wilks on week three
17:44Thoracin, we're just about the same players granted. There are injuries, but
17:51What is going on? Like this man? Where is he? Is he even there? What is he even doing?
17:59the defense is
18:01Dismal and so this is where we are
18:05This is where we're going to be and if the niners
18:08continue with this
18:10Kyle shanahan offensive coordinator
18:13guru
18:14uh
18:16genius play caller
18:18We're going to be where we are and hey, we're faithful. So I guess we got to deal with it. Thanks guys
18:25Wow, you know just and this this is just he said a lot this is just um
18:31to me
18:32what i'm going to say is an indication of you know, there's so much blame to go around that
18:39like
18:40There's there's literally dozens of guys and I was thinking about this another kind of microcosm of their season
18:46Just one particular play. Yeah, and
18:50The rams tie it six six
18:52And it's early in the fourth and the 49ers have the ball first in ten
18:58And he throws purdy throws a six-yard pass
19:01To debo samuel and they should be looking at second and four. Oh flag, but kittle holds
19:07And now they're first and 20 at the 10
19:12First and 20 at the 10 and guess what then they go three and out on that possession
19:17And they have to punt the ball back. Am I blaming kittle? No, absolutely not. But
19:23when
19:24When it's a comprehensive failure like that, you can't and in a 6-6 game, you can't be first and 20
19:32You're not going to get a first down in a game like last night when it's first and 20
19:37And then they kick a field goal to tie the game
19:41And you go four and out or whatever it was three and out
19:45You can't stave off any momentum
19:48Well, you needed to at least push the ball down the field a little so you could punt and pin them back
19:53But they couldn't and we saw the rams get the ball off a good punt from the niners at the two-yard line
19:58They drove enough to eat up clock but to change field position now
20:03I will say to your point stanley. I saw it. It's factual
20:07But how many times did that on the flip side help you the rams were at the would have been at the one-yard line
20:12But they were holding calls and that enabled the rams for from getting touchdowns and have to settle for field goal
20:18so it goes both ways, but
20:20Again, sonny. I hate to be a one-trick pony and I hear you shantay that game last night in the elements
20:27Purdy was 14 of 31
20:30Nine targets to joan jennings. They've been making sweet music all season only two receptions
20:35Joanne had a couple I felt he should have held on but stony two a nine
20:40And then you talk about if the elements is your thing that he can't throw in the rain
20:44It just reminded me of the green bay playoff last year saturday night and he was just off
20:51Brock purdy and
20:53I'm starting to and I really I can remember mark willard. We'll see him soon here
20:57He kept saying or he said and i'm speaking for my paraphrasing. He doesn't think debo. Nothing's wrong with him
21:04He's still the same then. Why is he?
21:07Ineffective, why did kittel get a 33-yard pass and then we didn't hear from him again?
21:14You know what? I mean? Like stony. Where is that going? Why if you got something working?
21:19Why does this niner offense not able to just continue to rub your face in it because they're not good enough?
21:27They're not good enough to like they used my words execution they used to be a football team that
21:32teams knew that mccaffrey was going to run at 18 times and catch at seven and
21:37they can't they
21:39I mean
21:41You can go to kittel and then they'll make an adjustment
21:45I I don't I don't know and debo's to russia tim stein. He netted three yards that many huh?
21:50I mean throw that out like again and there are people they're blocking or whatever and there's nowhere to run but
21:56I mean who saw this at and ricky pierce all well
21:59I I will argue to the end of until my time is out here on earth that it's not him
22:06more so than being put
22:08the the the
22:10The design of the play you can't tell me this dude's doing something wrong
22:15Not to be able to make contributions and it doesn't help when your quarterback misses you
22:19Well, and it doesn't help when you miss the first five weeks of the season and you're a rookie wide receiver
22:25Who's trying to figure out the league and you're playing in a game against the los angeles rams who have won seven of nine?
22:32And they're really good and everything gets harder
