00:00It's been more than two months since the Christine earthquake, which affected millions of residents, passed.
00:08Some have recovered, but many are still unable to move because of the wide area like Lemery, Batangas.
00:16Their situation in the special report of Niko Wahe.
00:21Our barangay is a fertile and fertile land.
00:34Our barangay receives a lot of vegetables and our livelihood.
00:40All of these seem to be just the tip of the iceberg in Barangay Nonong Castro here in Lemery, Batangas.
00:54What is said is the prosperity and beauty of the barangay was affected by the Christine earthquake in October.
01:05On October 24, some residents of Puroksyete, in the roof of a house, tried to save themselves.
01:15The flood was high and heavy, with rocks and pieces of debris in the area.
01:21They could not save themselves from the calamity left in the middle of the flood.
01:26In my whole life, I've been in the flood for 70 years.
01:32The flood is the biggest calamity in our barangay.
01:36When it rains, we feel like we're going to be swept away.
01:43We were traumatized.
01:46Many of the residents of Puroksyete who were affected by the Christine earthquake started to recover.
01:53Two months after the disaster, the situation is still the same.
01:57The vast land is now like a desert.
02:01Almost all of the houses are destroyed.
02:04Some of the land was completely eaten up by the flood.
02:07Only half of it is left.
02:09That's why many of the residents only have makeshift houses.
02:14I'm walking on Barangay Road of Barangay Nonong Castro,
02:19where people and cars can pass by.
02:22But when the flood came, with rocks and pieces of debris,
02:27Barangay Road was swept away by the land.
02:31Josephine's family is one of those who lost their house.
02:35Their house is next to a river.
02:37This is our old room.
02:39This is the kitchen.
02:40Now, it's gone.
02:41We passed through this.
02:43The flood really penetrated into our house.
02:49That's why it was washed out.
02:51None of our belongings are left.
02:54Fortunately, no one was harmed.
02:57Josephine's cousin, Flor de Liza, who has been living here for a long time,
03:01just recently experienced a severe flood like this.
03:05What did it look like before the flood?
03:07Sir, it was like this.
03:09It was high.
03:10It was like a waterfall.
03:12There were banana trees, sir.
03:15One of the reasons why the residents experienced such a huge flood
03:23is this small river that flows through Barangay Nonong Castro and Barangay Matingain.
03:29In the video, you can see how the debris from the mountain flows under the river.
03:36Usually, debris flows from this river out of the sea here in Barangay Nonong Castro in Lemery, Batangas.
03:43However, during the time of Hurricane Christine,
03:46too many debris flowed from the mountain.
03:49The reason?
03:50So that debris can flow into this part of the river that has a stream.
03:54As a result, the water with the debris flowed here to Barangay Nonong Castro.
04:02Because of the length of the tree and because it's big,
04:05the length of the stream was affected.
04:08So, the water didn't flow to the upstream.
04:13Now, the tree is completely gone.
04:15And they don't want to bring it back
04:17so that the water can flow properly and the debris can flow from the mountain.
04:24Aside from how each family will get up again,
04:27the children in Puroksyete are now thinking about their parents.
04:32According to the Barangay, there are more than 300 children aged 0 to 15 years old in the area.
04:39More than the elderly.
04:41Many of them are still fresh in their minds about what they experienced during the time of the hurricane.
04:46We thought that this is the end of us.
04:49The flood was too big.
04:52It's like we don't want to go out.
04:55We can't go out because we have a big piece of land with us.
04:59So, if we can't earn money, what will we do?
05:05But the problem is worse after the flood.
05:09Many of the children didn't go to school right away.
05:13When the flood came, I couldn't see my stuff because the debris was all over the place.
05:22My stuff was carried by my family.
05:25And my precious child is there.
05:28That's why I'm chasing the flood now.
05:31The other children are sleeping in the tent.
05:34It's hot because there's still no electricity.
05:37They also need to give water from a distance so that they can drink.
05:42That's why foundations like Save the Children Philippines are now more focused on the needs of the children.
05:49Especially since the flood came one after another.
05:52They were one of the first to send help to the Barangay Nonong Castro after the Christine Flood.
05:57This is also part of their All Should Be Safe campaign.
06:01More than one million children were affected by the flood.
06:07Children are the most vulnerable when it comes to this kind of situation.
06:13Their safety should be prioritized first in this kind of disaster that they can experience.
06:29For now, the clearing operation continues in the area so that it can be returned to how it was before.
06:35Some people were sent to the backhoe by the LGU to dig up the land and remove debris.
06:40The residents now need materials to build their houses and clothes that they can wear.
06:49According to the barangay members, they received help from the LGU such as relief goods.
06:55They were also given iron to make roof tiles.
06:57Many private organizations are also helping.
07:00But what are they waiting for?
07:02In this incident, we are waiting for the complete restoration of our government so that we can return to our normal life.
07:19For those who want to send help to the residents of Puroksete in the Barangay Nonong Castro,
07:24they can contact their barangay chairman.
07:27This is the first news.
07:29Nico Juaque for GMA Integrated News.
