00:00The Probe 3 space mission by the European Space Agency
00:03comprises two satellites which must fly in a precise formation
00:07to observe the mysterious solar corona. The solar corona is the exterior layer
00:12of the Sun's atmosphere.
00:13It is a cloud extending over millions of kilometers
00:16and is the origin of the solar wind. During eclipses we can see,
00:20with the naked eye, its luminous halo which overlaps the edge of the Moon,
00:24but for the rest of the time it is hidden by the light of the Sun and is
00:28difficult to observe.
00:29Observation of the corona didn't start until the 20th century
00:33with the invention of the coronagraph, a telescope which has the equivalent of a
00:37lunar disk
00:38to simulate the conditions of an eclipse. Probe 3 will use this technology
00:43by creating for the first time a giant coronagraph.
00:46Two satellites will fly in tandem in a high Earth
00:49orbit. The first will block out the Sun, like the Moon during an eclipse,
00:53while the other, 144 meters behind,
00:57will study the halo. Using this method to simulate six hours of eclipse by day,
01:02the two satellites must be coordinated to the nearest millimeter,
01:05a position never previously achieved. Among the mysteries scientists are
01:10hoping to uncover
01:11is why the temperature of the corona reaches millions of degrees
01:15while the surface of the Sun is only 6,000 degrees.
