00:4612 games for Brighton, following their battling victory at Bournemouth on Saturday. Sum the
00:51game up for us at the Vitality Stadium, please. Sam, it seems like it very much backs against
00:56the wall performance from the Seagulls in the second half.
00:59Yeah, it certainly was, actually. Even in the first half, I would say, that Brighton
01:02were probably not the better of the two teams. I think it was a perfect time for them to
01:07score very early on in the game. All the talk before the match, obviously, including our
01:12podcast last week, was about how they'd set up in the attacking sense with João Pedro
01:17and Rutter and Welbeck. My call for all three of them to start came true, and they were
01:24linked up really well for that opening goal. It was Pedro who put the ball in the back
01:28of the net after Rutter's shot was initially saved after a really good move from those
01:34attacking players that all three of them were involved in. But Bournemouth then took control
01:40of the game from that point on, and they had lots of chances to equalise. They did have
01:44the ball in the back of the net, but it was ruled out for offside. You did feel that Brighton
01:49were quite fortunate to be ahead at half-time for some of the chances that were missed.
01:53I think it was a one-on-one chance that Bournemouth had as well that they didn't put away.
01:56Yes, Brighton definitely did ride their luck in that sense, but they managed to get to
02:01the half-time goal ahead, and they lightened the strike twice in the second half. They
02:06managed to get a second goal right at the start of the second half through Pedro creating
02:10the goal again. It was an amazing pass through an eye-of-the-needle kind of pass, really,
02:14that I don't think many people spotted, apart from him, that Matombe then ran onto and put
02:19the ball away with confidence as well. It was a lovely goal and a really good way of
02:24doubling Brighton's lead. But Brian Bournemouth did come back with a vengeance again, trying
02:29to get that way back into the game. And Carlos Baleba was sent off for a second bookable
02:34offence, which we'll come on to. I think it was very harsh. I don't know how that was
02:39given as a second yellow. But you felt that Brighton could regret that and could end up
02:44bottling their lead. But they held on for a long time. They were 2-0 up right until
02:48the 93rd minute when David Brooks managed to get a goal back. And you kind of felt it
02:54could be Shades of the Wolves' game all over again, and they could bottle a two-goal advantage
02:58and go on to draw the game. But they managed to hold on despite Semenya hitting the crossbar
03:02for the last kick of the game. So, kind of a nervy end to the game, but they managed
03:06to hold on for really valuable three points.
03:09They did indeed, but they were forced to play the last 30 minutes with 10 plays after Carlos
03:13Baleba, as you said Sam, was shown his second yellow for a late challenge on Milos Kerkes.
03:18And to me, I agree with you, it didn't look like a foul to me at all. But yeah,
03:22what did you make of the decision?
03:24Yeah, crazy decision. Obviously, there was no arguments about the first one, the first
03:27yellow card, which was for a blatant foul and pulling back the ball player that was
03:33going through on the counter-attack. But the second one, it was so bizarre. You just felt
03:39like he was going in for a fair challenge and he didn't even touch Kerkes really.
03:44And it was a really bizarre one. I'm not too sure why that was given as a second yellow.
03:48But as we know, the rules say you can't appeal it. And that's what Hertzler was calling
03:54for in his press conference when I asked him about it. And he said it should never
03:57have been a second yellow. And he hopes the referees look back and change their mind.
04:02Because obviously, it does mean that he's suspended against Southampton. So, he was
04:05kind of hoping that would be rescinded and he would still be able to play that game on
04:08Friday. But I don't think he's going to get as lucky as we know from the league rules.
04:15That doesn't really happen. I think if it's a straight red card that's been incorrectly
04:19given, then fair enough. But second yellows are not typically something you can appeal
04:24against. So, unfortunately, that does mean Buleva will miss the game against Southampton
04:28and he will be a big miss because he's obviously being one of Bryson's key players this season.
04:32It was probably on the whole bit of an off day for Buleva at Bournemouth. And even when
04:36he was on the pitch, he wasn't at his best. And obviously, we mentioned that first yellow
04:39card that was definitely deserved. And he kind of felt he was a little bit off the pace.
04:43But I think on the whole, he's been brilliant and will be a big miss against Southampton.
04:48I agree with that. But the win leaves Abin fifth in the Premier League.
04:51Level and points with Chelsea and Arsenal and just one point behind second place Man City.
04:56I don't think many people would have expected this at the start of the season,
04:58Deren. But what has been the key factors behind Bryton's sparkling season so far?
05:03And would you say that so far, the Hurtzela gamble is paying off?
05:07It certainly looks that way. He's been very impressive the way he's gone about his business
05:12since he's, you know, in his first season in the Premier League, having arrived in the summer.
05:17Much was made about his age. But when you speak to him or when you
05:23meet him or discuss football with him, you wouldn't think he's 31 years old at all.
05:29He doesn't come across like that. He's, you know, he's like a seasoned manager.
05:34And yeah, he's really impressed, I think, as well. But you can't ignore the fact as well,
05:41though, that he's got a very good squad. Coupled with what Hurtzela, the work that Hurtzela has
05:48done and the signings that Bryton have made over the summer. Remember, they spent more than 200
05:55million on new faces this summer. They've got a very, very good squad now and they're
06:00capable of competing with the better teams, as you mentioned, like Manchester City.
06:07They narrowly lost to Liverpool. They've beaten Tottenham this year. They've beaten Man United
06:12this year. They've taken a point off Arsenal. So, yeah, so it's been really, really good.
06:18And the attacking options that they have now make them a threat to anyone. They need,
06:24if there's a criticism that is defensively, they need to keep a few clean sheets every
06:32really help, help their cause. But yeah, so far, the Hurtzela era has started off really well.
06:41And yeah, I cannot see any reason why it can't continue. I think they've got the momentum.
06:47They've got the players as well. And I think, you know, European football could be a very,
06:52very realistic target for them this season.
06:55I think I'd agree with that, Darren. But off the pitch, two Albion players have been linked
06:59with loan moves away from the Cup. There are reports that the Seagulls are ready to allow
07:03Evan Ferguson to leave on loan in January, and that's come from multiple sources,
07:07while the BBC have said that Julio and Cissé will be open to a loan move.
07:11What do you make of these reports, Darren? I must admit, I was quite surprised by them.
07:14Do you see these coming to fruition in January, maybe?
07:18Well, I was in the press conference today and Hurtzela was really taken aback by all these
07:23reports about Evan Ferguson in particular. He said he's spoken to him. There's no way he wants
07:31him to go out on loan. He wants him to fight for his place. And he cited Igor Julio as an example
07:39of how to conduct yourself and train and prepare mentally when you're out of the team. Igor Julio
07:45didn't play much at the beginning. He was behind Van Hecker, he was even behind Adam Webster,
07:50obviously Lewis Dunk as well. But he trained hard and he got this opportunity with Lewis
07:56Dunk being injured. And he's performed really well. And he wants Evan Ferguson to take a leaf
08:02out of Igor's book and do something similar. Yeah, it's an interesting one, whether it's
08:09come from the agent, whether it's come from, you know, just to say, look, you need to start
08:13playing him or, you know, is it a thinly veiled threat with all these reports that have come out?
08:19But you can't blame Hurtzela for not playing him. The decisions that he's made, Jal Pedro,
08:25would you drop him? Jorginho Ruta, he's been really good since he's come in as well. Danny
08:31Welbeck, he's playing the best football of his life and he's having a run where he's fit as well.
08:38So, I think Ferguson should just bide his time, be a bit more patient, wait for an injury or wait
08:47for a suspension or wait for something like that and then really try and take his chance. I still
08:51think he's the future of Brighton. I think he's that good. I think he's got 17 goals already in
08:58his career for Brighton and five assists. So, yeah, I would stay put. And I think as well in
09:04the summer, there's going to be a few clubs bidding for Jal Pedro. So, I think there could
09:10be a massive hole there if, you know, if that happens. And then Ferguson, I still think he's
09:18the future of, you know, the attacking threat for Brighton. So, hopefully you would say.
09:22Enciso is another one. It's a bit tricky. I'm not quite sure what's going to happen with him alone
09:27could be a possible move for Enciso, yeah. Well, Brighton are back in Premier League
09:32on a Friday evening at home to Southampton. The Saints sit at the bottom of the division,
09:39having taken just four points from 12 games, despite the fact that it is on a Friday evening
09:43game, which to me is unforgivable. How do you see this one going? This game just reminds me of
09:49Ipswich. It seems very winnable for them, but there should be an element of caution, I think,
09:52for Brighton. Yeah, I almost mentioned it in my previous answer as well, because,
09:57as you mentioned, they've done so well against the bigger teams, the Tottenham,
10:00the Arsenal, Man United and Man City. But they have slipped up against the likes of Wolves,
10:05where they dropped points, Ipswich as well, where they dropped points as well.
10:10And I think it's one of those occasions, again, where they're at home, it's going to be under
10:15the lights and all the fans are going to expect a win because Southampton have struggled this season.
10:22And so, yeah, it's one of those which has the potential to go wrong. But if Brighton are at
10:27it and fully fit and firing, then they should have far too much for Southampton, who they're
10:33showing signs of improvement under Russell Martin. They keep possession really well and they're a
10:39difficult team to play against. And they've had, you know, they've come close against Liverpool
10:44last week as well. So they're not going to be easy. They're very, you know, dangerous,
10:49but they do leak goals. And I just think with Brighton's attacking threat,
10:54they can capitalise on that as well. But yeah, it's not going to be an easy game for Brighton,
11:02I think. I think they're slightly better than what their leak position shows.
11:07I think it'll be a tight game. But yes, we're going to take a quick break. And when we come
11:10back, we will talk all things Crawley Town. And it's all positive at the moment.
11:15Welcome back to the second half of the Garman Action podcast, where we will take a look at
11:19Crawley Town. And the Reds moved out of the League One relegation zone with a 1-0 win over
11:24Rotherham on Saturday. Will Swan's first-half strike helped the Reds heap pressure on their
11:28former boss, Steve Evans. And it sounds like Crawley were worthy of their win, Mark. How
11:33did you see that one? Yeah, absolutely. They were absolutely brilliant on Saturday.
11:38And Rotherham were absolutely awful. They've been on a terrible run and the fans turned on
11:44them the previous week. And there were boos at the end of this one as well from the away fans
11:49because they just didn't look up for it at all. I mean, Steve Evans called it farcical conditions
11:54after the game for both sides. And yeah, it was. But you're playing League One football in
12:01November. So it's going to be sometimes you're going to have a bit of wind and a bit of rain.
12:05I mean, it was particularly strong, the wind. And I think there was one point in the second
12:09half, Jojo Wallachot kicked the ball and it went about 10 yards because the wind just took it and
12:13blew it back towards him. But yeah, Crawley just continued to do what they do. They play football,
12:20they try and keep it on the ground and that works in those conditions. Rotherham didn't.
12:24They tried to lump it forward when they had the wind and that and it just didn't work.
12:28But yeah, Crawley played really well, dominated, probably should have been three or four nil in
12:31the end. But this is where Crawley are struggling. They're struggling to score goals and they're
12:36struggling to create those really clear-cut chances. But when the goal did come, it was a
12:42quality ball by Toby Malarkey, picked the ball up sort of right midfield and just whipped it in and
12:48Will Swan nipped in behind the Rotherham defence and just slotted home. He had the easiest,
12:53couldn't really miss, but it was a really well-taken goal. But what was interesting is
12:57that they were down to bare bones, as we know, Crawley. And yeah, we saw Ronan Darcy play out
13:05on the left. He's normally been playing in the middle. Jeremy Kelly, who's normally been playing
13:09out wide, played in the defensive role because Jay Williams and Bradley Ibrahim were both missing
13:14in the centre of midfield. And Will Swan dropped just behind, sort of in more of a number 10 role
13:19of behind Tola Shawanmi. And it all just really worked. Jeremy Kelly was outstanding. I know we're
13:24going to talk about him a bit more later. Spoiler. But Ronan Darcy was just as influential on the
13:30left, coming in on the left, cutting in and that. And Will Swan, Rob Elliott said afterwards that
13:35Will Swan, he says he's such an intelligent footballer, actually, the number 10 role
13:40might suit him more than playing up front on his own. So these injuries, and now they might have
13:45had a big, big benefit for Rob Elliott, seeing these players play in different positions and
13:49that. And it could work out for the best for Crawley, and it has done in the last three or
13:53four weeks. Well, you mentioned it there. After a tough start to his tenure, Elliott and the Reds
13:57are now four unbeaten in League One and post-match. Rob Elliott said he'd found the light at the end
14:01of the tunnel. How has he improved Crawley since his appointment?
14:12Yeah, 100 per cent, Matt. So I think, obviously, defensively, it's been a big thing,
14:15that even under Scott Lindsay, they were prone to leak goals. So to shore up that has been the
14:21main reason for their recent unbeaten run, I think. But it has taken a while for Rob Elliott
14:26to get that to click and for the team to understand what he really wants from them as a squad.
14:31Gerry McKeddy did say in the FA Cup this morning that it takes a few weeks for the managers and
14:35players to gain an understanding of each other. But once that happens and you can understand
14:39what you want and how you want it, things get a lot easier and things have really clicked.
14:43He knows it's still got work to do, but they're getting closer and closer. So I think that's just
14:49bodes really well for the future, that if Rob Elliott is already kind of having this impact
14:53on the players. And as we know, it isn't going to happen straight away and it is going to take
14:56that bit of time. And to see the improvements they've made defensively is really reassuring,
15:02and it's nice to see they managed to get the goal to win the game on the weekend as well.
15:06From what Mark was telling me, it sounds like they could have scored even more goals in the game. So
15:11potentially one to be wary of in the future. If you don't kill the game, then they might be made
15:15to pay for it. And obviously, despite how badly they played, it sounds like they had a big chance
15:20at the end as well. So I think if you're in such control of these games, they do need to make sure
15:25they do add to their lead if they can. Yeah, I was just going to say if there was a chance
15:31at the end, the ball whipped in and the player ran in completely unmarked in the box, glancing
15:35header, he literally just had to get anything on it and he would have scored and he missed it. And
15:39it would have been the biggest smash and grab ever. Yeah, it would have been. Yeah, everybody
15:45in the ground would have just been so gutted that they didn't get all three points. So yeah,
15:49like you say, they do need to improve on that. Got to have luck on your side though,
15:54didn't you, at the same time? Absolutely. Elliott also said that post-match one
15:59Crawley Town player was one of the most technically gifted players he's ever worked
16:02with, considering the calibre of plays that he's played with. That's a bit of a bold claim, Mark.
16:06Who on earth was he talking about? Well, I sort of spoiled it a little bit earlier,
16:10but it was Jeremy Kelly, who I've just been speaking to this morning at the FA Cup press
16:15conference. So yeah, he, Jeremy Kelly, when I saw the line-up and I thought, well, who's going to
16:21be playing in the centre of the midfield then? And I was looking through and we couldn't quite
16:26work out. I was talking to Gary Smith from the BBC and we couldn't work out. And it turned out
16:31Jeremy Kelly was going to be the sort of defensive midfield enforcer kind of thing, left by Jay
16:36Williams and Bradley Ibrahim. But he was brilliant. And I said to Elliott afterwards, I said, oh,
16:41and he just said, I'm not surprised. He is the most technically gifted player I've ever worked
16:46with, which is a hell of a statement considering who Rob Elliott has played with, worked with,
16:52et cetera. I mean, I don't know whether he was talking about players he played with as well,
16:56but the way he said it, it was like that. But I'm chatting to a couple of people at the training
17:01ground this morning. I said about this, what Rob Elliott said, and they were saying, even last
17:07season, obviously with all the players that shone last season for Crawley, Clydie Lollos, Jay
17:13Williams, Liam Kelly, et cetera. They all apparently absolutely loved Jeremy Kelly and were
17:18amazed what an amazing footballer he was because he came from nowhere. He came from Colorado Rapids,
17:23came on a short-term deal initially, and he was, he came in and everybody, I mean, you had all the
17:29naysayers saying, oh, he's only joined because he's an American, they've got American owners,
17:33et cetera. But the fans love him now. He's so good to watch when he's, when he's on form,
17:38when he's on the ball, he's so skillful and just his quick turn of pace. And I think I remember
17:44Scott Lindsey one day said he's actually quicker when he's on the ball than when he's off the ball.
17:49And you watch him and he is, because he isn't the fastest of players. And when he's running
17:53like down the wing, you're just like, oh, come on. He's sometimes a little bit of free treacle.
17:58But when he's got the ball running down the wing, he's blimmin' like lightning. It's really bizarre
18:02to watch, but he's a hell of a player and a really humble bloke. I asked him about what
18:07Rob Elliott said about him. And what did he say? Sorry, I've got it here in front of me.
18:14It's always nice when you get a compliment, especially from your gaffer. But that's one
18:18of the things I bring to the team. You try to have balance in a team. So there's other players
18:22that offer different assets and traits. But I'm just happy he says that. And I'm glad I can bring
18:27something for the team. And he likes me kind of thing. And he's very humble. And yeah, considering
18:32he's missing Thanksgiving with his family in the US today, he's, yeah, I think he's just happy to
18:37be here and just happy to contribute to the team. Well, Steve Evans took more than half an hour to
18:43come out for media duties after his Rotherham side lost to his former side Crawley. The loss
18:47was Rotherham's fourth in five matches. How did Steve Evans see the game, Sam?
18:54Yeah, he wasn't too pleased by the sounds of it. He did say, you can imagine how disappointed he
18:59and the team are. And he said that was the reason why he was so late in coming out to speak into the
19:03press. Because at the end of the day, they are showing relegation form, which is a far cry from
19:08his pledge to have them challenging for promotion. As Evans has talked to the club, being close to
19:12the player frame by Christmas, and after a fourth loss in five league games, he says now or never.
19:18So I think after the game, as Mark mentioned before, he said about how the conditions made it
19:22farcical for both teams. He said chances came. They had two big chances in the first half,
19:28and he thinks they probably should have done better with those that they had. And obviously,
19:32the big chance at the end that we've spoken about as well. He said some of the players
19:35are going through the motions. And he said that it's kind of just a form that needs to improve.
19:43And I think obviously, if his job isn't as much as anything, obviously, if this keeps going,
19:47if fans are booing, then the ownership might be in a position where they're forced to make
19:51a decision. So I think that it is worrying signs really. And they need to obviously improve
19:57really, really quickly to avoid the drop. As we know, four teams go down from league one. So
20:03definitely, there's not a lot of room for error in this league.
20:07Absolutely. Well, this Saturday sees the Reds in FA Cup second round action as they host Lincoln.
20:13Yeah, another tough game for the Reds, Mark. But will they not be buoyed after already
20:17beating Lincoln this season? Yeah, it's a funny one. Because yeah,
20:21they did beat Lincoln 3-0, and it looked convincing on the night. But Lincoln did
20:25have a lot of the play. And it was mainly three breakaway goals from Crawley that actually won
20:29it in the end. But it was a really good performance from Crawley that night. But
20:33Lincoln will probably feel that they probably should have got something out of it. But it's
20:38funny. Rob Elliott said this is probably the toughest draw they could have got. I mean,
20:41apart from being away to Lincoln. He really rates Lincoln as a side. And he said,
20:47you look at the team they put out midweek. They played on Tuesday night. I don't know. I can't
20:50remember what the score was. But it was a slightly different side. And he just said that strength in
20:54depth they've got is incredible. So he doesn't know what sort of side they're going to be facing
20:58on Saturday. But it's going to be a really good test. But yeah, Crawley have beaten them 3-0. And
21:02yeah, hopefully, you think that's quite a psychological thing for them. They know they
21:06can beat this side that are coming. And you've obviously got the incentive of going into the
21:10third round draw as well and getting a big draw away. So yeah, hopefully a bit of FA Cup magic at
21:16the Broadfield Stadium. I mean, if it was away from home, I think you'd just say Lincoln. Lincoln
21:20are through. But because it's I think Crawley really do stand a chance. But as Elliott says,
21:26it's going to be really, really tough for them. And Tuesday evening sees the Reds travel to
21:31Charlton. This is back in League One. At the time of the recording, the addicts sit 12th on the
21:35table. But they needed a late goal to beat bottom of the table Burton last Saturday. How do you see
21:41this one going, Sam? It seems like it could go either way, really, didn't it? Certainly could.
21:45Yeah, Charlton have had a bit of a topsy-turvy season. If you actually look at their stats,
21:48they've had six wins, six losses, 17 goals scored and 17 goals conceded. So it's all very,
21:55very 50-50 for them this season. And they would have been relieved to scrape a win against 10-man
22:00Burton last time out to bounce back from the defeat at Huddersfield. The last one in the
22:05league on October the 5th, which is a 1-0 winner for Birmingham. And this was followed by three
22:09consecutive draws before they lost against Exeter. And their form's definitely been up and down,
22:14not too many wins, they're not scoring too many goals. But they have scored two more goals than
22:18Crawley this season, with 10 fewer conceded. So you'd say they are doing a little bit better
22:22than Crawley in that sense. And they haven't actually lost at home in the league since
22:26September. And this was against Blackpool and their only home league defeat of the season.
22:30So that potentially points to a difficult trip for Crawley to try and get all three points.
22:36But I think it's one that Crawley can win, with the form they're in. Obviously,
22:39Crawley have proven they're not an easy team to beat at the moment. So, fingers crossed,
22:43it could be a good place to go and get a good result. But yeah, we'll obviously do score
22:48predictions later on. But I think a draw would be a reasonable result, I think. But I think,
22:52yeah, if you can nick a win, it'd be brilliant.
22:55Well, nicely done, Sam. Going straight into score predictions. A beautiful segue there.
22:59You've done this before.
23:01Yes, indeed. The old pro. We'll start on Friday night, where Brighton play Southampton.
23:08Deren, I think this might be quite a tough one to call myself, but how do you see it?
23:12Yeah, I agree with you. I've been torn. I either think it's going to be nil-nil,
23:17or it's going to be like a three-nil. So I'm not sure. I'm going to go three-one to Brighton,
23:22I think, because they can't keep a clean sheet. But it could be nil-nil.
23:27Sam, how do you see this one going?
23:29I think Brighton will win. I think they've got loads of confidence. The attacking line-up
23:32looks formidable. I'm going to go two-nil. Two-nil, Bryson.
23:36And Mark, do you share in the optimism?
23:39I do. I don't know what you've got against the Friday night lights, Matt.
23:42Nice. Game's gone. Game's gone.
23:46I watched a bit of Southampton-Liverpool, and I was actually, yeah, I mean, as we know,
23:50Southampton play some good stuff, but they just can't defend. So I'm going to go four-two,
23:55Brighton. I'm going for another Thriller. But not like my prediction last week against
24:00Bournemouth. Three-all, I think, I won't call. So I'll go four-two.
24:03Goals guaranteed, hopefully. And this Saturday,
24:06Atsy's crawling against Lincoln in the FA Cup. Again, another tough one to call,
24:10Mark, but how do you see that one going?
24:12Yeah, I think it'll be tighter than the three-nil scoreline last time. I'm going to go two-one
24:16crawling, and then they're going to get a big away day in the Premier League.
24:22Any preferences to who?
