00:15Albion and Crawley. I'll get involved when we talk about the Reds in the second half.
00:20Brighton travelled to QPR in their penultimate pre-season friendly at the weekend and they
00:23now host the Spanish outfit Villarreal at the Amex on Saturday before the season gets
00:28underway a week later. We'll pick over the Bones of Albion win at Loftus Road and
00:33give our predictions for the weekend, plus we'll bring you the latest news from Crawley
00:36Town as they prepare to start for their League One campaign against Blackpool on Saturday.

00:57you for tuning in.
00:59Danny Welbeck scored the only goal of the game from the penalty spot as Brighton heads
01:03past QPR at Loftus Road on Saturday. What were the main takeaways from that game, Sam?
01:08Yeah, it was an enjoyable game really. Obviously just the one goal was the difference at Loftus
01:14Road but you felt Brighton deserved the win. Obviously victories and results are not important
01:20in pre-season but I think there was definitely some positive signs from them going forward,
01:23especially in the first half they had a number of chances and I think Minta was the standout
01:30player once again after his exploits in Japan. He's a real live wire on that right wing and
01:36he really has settled so quickly into the side and he's immediately kind of shown what
01:40he's all about and he really impressed me and he was one I was really looking forward
01:44to watching and as I say he didn't disappoint at all. It was good to see Sarmiento involved
01:49and he was involved in some nice link-up play as well and he had one of the game's best
01:53chances actually in the first half or we went closest to scoring I should say. Matoma, brilliant
01:58to see him back in action as well after he missed so much at the end of last season.
02:02He's still showing signs of rust a little bit as he's working his way back into full
02:08fitness and form but I think it's so exciting now the talent that Brighton have going forward.
02:13It's remarkable really and that's all you even think about, Gennaro Pedro coming back in,
02:17Evan Ferguson coming back so I think there's lots of reasons to be excited if you're a
02:21Brighton fan really. But it was the second half that Ryan had to wait for the second
02:26half to score on the day with Minter winning the ball back high up the field where taking
02:30the ball off the defender and he was unfairly brought down and Welbeck stepped up poorly
02:36to slot the penalty home and that was all they needed to secure the win in that game
02:40really and QPR really offered nothing in the first half and it wasn't until Brighton scored
02:44that they then started to put the defence under a little bit of pressure and I think
02:48Jason Steele had probably one thing to do all match which was to catch a fairly easy
02:52cross and that's pretty much all he had to do. So I think Brighton really were confident,
02:58composed and they really did limit QPR to very little in the game so I think from a
03:02defensive point of view there was lots to be pleased about as well as the good things
03:06we saw going forward.
03:07Yeah so Minter, he was the one who stood out for Albin you think?
03:12Yeah 100% Minter really was impressive in the match and I can't wait to see how he gets
03:17on in the Premier League really because we've obviously seen what he can do in pre-season
03:21but when he gets down to the real nitty-gritty of the Premier League is when we can really
03:26see what he can do. I think we're going to get into it but Fabian Hersele in his post-match
03:33comment was just talking about how defensively it's so important to start from the forwards
03:40so he wants to see defensive mindsets from his attackers which is so different to what
03:45we saw from Roberto Di Servi in that he's so open-minded so it's a bit of a change in
03:51that sense and it's something the players are going to have to get used to but it seems
03:54like Minter has settled into that straight away because you really did see his mindset
04:01to kind of be onto the defenders as soon as they take the first touch and try and win
04:05the ball back high up the field and it can really kind of help Brighton keep the dominance
04:09and pressure on teams and we really did see some signs of that hopefully that can be replicated
04:14in the Premier League.
04:16What else did we learn from Hersele's intrigue and post-match comments?
04:21That was the main thing from the comments I think just to try and get the players to
04:25understand this slightly different way of performing and trying to get slightly better
04:30results in defensive mindset because as we saw with Di Servi he did play high-risk football
04:35and he was very gung-ho at times wasn't he as we know and if it went wrong badly wrong.
04:40I feel like we won't see much of that from Brighton I think we'll definitely see obviously
04:44some brilliant attacking football that we've obviously become used to with Di Servi but
04:48I feel there will be more of a kind of an onus on the defence side of things as well
04:53and to make sure things are tight and Hersele did speak highly about the importance of getting
04:58that clean sheet and he did think that was really important and we never really heard
05:01that from Di Servi I don't think Di Servi very often spoke about getting a clean sheet.
05:10It takes some getting used to for the players and the erminus as well I think so
05:13but I think the signs are positive and as we saw he's got lots of goals in Japan as well so
05:18it's not going to be a case of just sitting back and hitting teams on the counter. I think
05:21Hersele will be looking for the right balance between defence and attacking.
05:26Next up for Albion is a home match against La Liga side Villarreal in their final pre-season
05:30friendly before they travel to Everton on the opening weekend of the Premier League. How much
05:34of a test will Villarreal be Darren? I think it's a good pre-season
05:39friendly. Good one for the final match before the Premier League starts.
05:45Yeah, they look a good outfit obviously. They finished eighth in La Liga last season. They've
05:53got a few familiar faces as well. They recently signed Nicolas Pepe from Arsenal as well. You
06:00remember he went to Arsenal for 70 odd million and he showed flashes of his brilliance but never
06:07nailed down a spot in the Arsenal team. He's at Villarreal now. Hopefully fans can get a glimpse
06:14of him. Eric Bailly as well, former Man Utd defender and Dan Juma used to play for Bournemouth,
06:21Everton and Tottenham. He plays for Villarreal now as well. I think there will be a good test
06:29and it will more be about what Albion, how much they want to put into it, how much they want to
06:34get out of it before the Everton game in the Premier League. It's that balance that you have
06:41to get about getting the fitness right without risking injury and just seeing where some of the
06:49players are at. I think Lewis Dunk could make an appearance, his first of the pre-season.
06:55Obviously he was given extra time to rest after being in the England squad. He didn't play for
06:59England but he was with the squad so he was allowed extra leave. As was Billy Gilmour as well.
07:06So it will be interesting to see whether Billy Gilmour plays with all this speculation linking
07:10him to Napoli still. I think they are the main takeaways. Villarreal, under Marcelino,
07:19Torreira, they drew 0-0 with Knox Forest in the pre-season friendly last time out, last Friday.
07:26So they have had a couple of games against Premier League teams. I think they also played
07:30St Etienne as well before Forest and they lost 3-0 to them. So they are feeling their way into
07:37the season as well. So I think it will be a good game for Brighton and for Villarreal.
07:42And a good one for the fans as well. It will be Fabian Hurlitz's first time in the dugout at the
07:50Amex Stadium as well. So he will likely get a good welcome as well. So it's a good one.
07:54We're looking forward to it.
07:57What kind of team are we expecting Brighton to field Henry and who would you like to see
08:00minutes given to?
08:02Well, as Dara mentions, I do think this will be a very stiff competition for the Albion.
08:08They do look like a solid side. It would be interesting to see the two Feyenoord boys in
08:14action. Jakuba Minter who was bought from Newcastle but was on loan to the side and
08:20Wiffer as well because we've seen recently that he's been back in training. I'm not sure
08:25if he's going to be ready for the sort of first team, sort of the first 11 on the field,
08:31but he could be used as a substitute and that would be an interesting one seeing him
08:35link up with the other defenders and seeing how he gets on really because
08:40obviously we know that it always takes a bit of time to adjust and others adjust more quickly
08:46than others and one of those players that's just been able to sort of take to the team
08:49like a duck to water recently is Jakuba Minter that was mentioned. I mean he's been absolutely
08:56quality for the Albion and in that Japan tour you really just saw that he was trying, he was
09:02making an impact and a lot of players, especially when they come into a team, I think they want to
09:08make their sort of mark straight away, especially as an attacker and he really did. He scored a few
09:12goals and he was really involved just getting the team up the pitch all the time and he's such a
09:18bright spark for the team and one that Albion fans are really looking forward to seeing in the
09:22Premier League and also seeing if they're going to watch this game that's our last pre-season
09:27game before the campaign kicks off. I think that Motomu would be great to see back at the Amex as
09:33well if he was given a few minutes. I mean he's the star man for the Japanese fans here so he's
09:42yeah, he's been sort of commended a lot being on tour and Koizumi Dubre as well because he's just
09:47performed so impressively. He's come from Arsenal, from the academy and he's just yeah, he's just
09:52shown so well for the Albion and it's really nice to see how well he's been doing and if you can do
09:58that in the Premier League as well then it's just another gem that Brighton have been able to uncover.
10:04Brilliant, yeah. What's the latest situation in the transfer market there and it sounds like
10:08two players are edging closer to moves away and at least three could be coming in.
10:12And what's the latest with Karl Rushworth as well?
10:17Oh, you're on mute Darren.
10:19Sorry chaps, yeah. There's a few players that could be on the move. The long-running saga with
10:28Denis Undev, you remember he sort of spent last season on loan at Stuttgart and he's made no
10:35secret of his wish to leave Albion this summer and he's even sort of made some comments to say
10:40that he didn't feel appreciated at Brighton. He said when he was on loan at Stuttgart he was never
10:46valued by Brighton so it's quite strange to hear those comments and I think it was mainly he was
10:53getting edgy. He wanted the move to progress quicker but Brighton were really, they weren't
11:00just going to let him go lightly. They really wanted to maximise the value they could and I
11:04think they have by the sounds of it. They brought him in for six million and it's looking like
11:09they're wrapping up a deal which could with add-ons get up to around about the 30 million mark
11:15as Undev leaves for Stuttgart. Billy Gilmore, what's happening there I really don't know.
11:24Unless he really wants to leave or to go to Napoli I don't think Brighton should be
11:29selling him. We're not privy to what Gilmore wants to do but there's talk of like a 15 million bid
11:37coming in. Napoli started with eight million, they've gone up to 15
11:43and I don't think that's enough for Gilmore. So it's interesting to see what happens there. If I
11:47was Herzela I would say look you're going to be my main man this season. I want you to play
11:51alongside Boliva and Wiffer who have just come in and really make him feel wanted and part of
11:57this Brighton team. So it'll be interesting to see what happens there. For Kondo Bonote,
12:04he looks as though he's going to seal a loan move to Leicester. There was talk of Fyenoord,
12:11Southampton and also Celtic but it looks as though Leicester have got a deal, a loan deal,
12:17without an option to buy for Bonote. And Karl Rushworth, I think his loan move, they're going
12:23to look to loan him out to a championship club possibly. I think that's been delayed
12:28because of Verbruggen's injury. Verbruggen's not fit to start for the first couple of games. So I
12:33think once Verbruggen's back then you'll see Karl Rushworth agree a loan deal and I'm sure there'll
12:39be a number of takers for him as well. He's a class goalkeeper. So yeah, that's the main
12:45outgoings for Brighton I think in the coming days.
12:49Are you pleased that the Undab deal is finally sorted and what are your thoughts on Bonote
12:56going to Leicester? Doesn't it strengthen a rival?
13:00Well, yeah, just to talk about Undab really quickly. I mean, I think we just had to make
13:04the best out of a really bad situation where we did have that sort of clause that allowed them
13:09to actually sort of purchase the player. And although we could have sort of added a little
13:13bit more to sort of actually have him back for ourselves, I think that the issues of
13:18the interviews that we saw of him just saying he doesn't want to be at the club,
13:22I think that just sort of sealed the deal that he was going to stay there because I don't think
13:26Bloom would have wanted sort of a bad apple in morale in the changing rooms. And I think that
13:31that could have done a lot of damage. Brighton are not like that as a team. In regards to
13:38Bonote going to Leicester, I think it can be assumed that he'll get more game time by going
13:42there while still remaining in the Premier League, which is huge for him. But I do think it does
13:48sort of strengthen a rival, even though Brighton have done a lot of work in this transfer window
13:53with their recent successes as well, sort of in the Europa League and their status going up a
13:57little bit. I do think that it's a risk getting a player of 19 years old out on loan. I mean,
14:05he was featured a little bit as Irby here and there with spells, and he was really good. So,
14:09I think he'll do well at Leicester. But yeah, we'll see if that was a mistake. And I'm glad
14:14that there's no buy option in this one. They've learned their lesson, hopefully.
14:19Quick question for you. Is Leicester really a rival for Brighton, do you think?
14:24It's an interesting one, isn't it? Because a few years ago, you'd have said, yeah,
14:28definitely for sure. And it really depends how Brighton get going under Herzela. I think
14:33if they had a more experienced manager coming in, then maybe they'd steady the ship earlier.
14:39But because Herzela is brand new to the Premier League, he's very young. So, yeah, it just
14:45depends how Brighton start. If they have a dodgy start, then Leicester will be a rival.
14:51Absolutely. Sam, what do you think?
14:54Yeah, I think so. I think time will tell, obviously, how Brighton get on, the new signings
14:58gel and how Herzela gets on in the Premier League. But I think Leicester are a really good team,
15:03a really strong team. And there's no reason why they can't perform well as well and potentially
15:08rival Brighton higher up the lead. It doesn't necessarily mean Brighton have to have a bad
15:11season to rival Leicester. It could be that Leicester do just get relegated. So,
15:17yeah, it's a difficult one. I think, what I'm not saying is, obviously, he's a great player
15:21in his day. He can score some absolute belters. And the last thing you want is to be doing that
15:26for Leicester and that adversity impact Brighton. So, yeah, definitely interesting one. I'm
15:30definitely surprised that he's going to win the Premier League.
15:33Yeah, brilliant. Cool. Right, we're going to take a quick break and then we're going
15:37to talk all things Crawley Town.
15:42Hi, welcome back. And you now have me asking the questions as we focus on Crawley Town.
15:47They kick off their season on Saturday at the Broadfield Stadium against Blackpool.
15:53It's been a summer of change for Crawley with lots of goings and plenty of comings, Mark.
15:57With a former favourite returning this week, how is the squad looking, do you think?
16:03Yeah, it's looking actually quite good now. And it's weird because, I mean, they obviously sold,
16:08I think there's been 17 outgoings and then just as many, if not more, signings coming in. And
16:19sort of well-publicised, eight of the starting line-up who started at Wembley have all left the
16:22club now. And I think they were building the squad and it was looking OK. And then this week,
16:28Panucci Camara signed, re-signed, and he's been a hip switch. He had three seasons at Crawley
16:36around 2015 and he was a fan favourite. And that signing seems to have galvanised the fans.
16:43They're like, wait a minute, we've got a good squad here. Just that one signing. Everyone else
16:46was like, oh, we don't know who this player is. Oh, that seems like a good signing here and there.
16:50Don't know who this is. But this one signing seems to have galvanised the fan base and gone like,
16:54right, we're staying up. We've got a really good squad now. So, yeah, seeing Camara come back is
17:00great, great news because they've been sort of looking for that sort of really creative spark
17:04in midfield and someone who can score goals as well. So, he is an attacking midfielder and it
17:09will suit Scott Lindsay's formation and playing style down to the ground, having that person
17:14driving forward from midfield. So, yeah, no, I think the squad looks OK. I think on my current
17:20count, we've got 25 players in the squad. That's three Keeves. I'm expecting Jasper Shaikh, one of
17:26the keepers, probably to go out on loan and maybe a couple of the other youngsters they've brought
17:30in to go out on loan. But I think he's got a good squad. Still, I think, and I've seen a couple of
17:35fans tweet, still want that extra striker, I think, to back up. Rashan Hepburn-Murphy is going
17:40to be the main man, I think. But if they can get another striker, there was rumours about Bradford
17:45City's Jake Young coming. I don't think that's going to come off. But, yeah, I think the squad
17:51is good and capable of surprising a few people again, like they did last year. And, obviously,
17:56with Scott Lindsay in charge, we've waxed lyrical about Scott for so long now. I mean, with him in
18:01charge, you don't know what to expect with this crawly team other than they're going to surprise
18:06a lot of people. Yeah, no, they obviously, they've defied all the odds last season to
18:11gain promotion. But they are already everybody's favourites to go down this season. Is that unfair,
18:16Sam? And can they repeat last season's heroics, do you think?
18:21Yeah, it's a tough one to call, isn't it? I think if they'd managed to keep hold of the players,
18:25or at least some of the players from last year, and obviously they'd formed such good chemistry
18:28and defied all the odds. I think if they had the same team and only built on it, I'd be a lot more
18:34confident that they would have had a really successful season in League One. With all those
18:39players gone and Scott Lindsay having to do it all over again and to rebuild the team, which I don't
18:44doubt he can do. I actually asked him that question. He did say that he's really looking
18:47forward to that challenge to do it all over again, because it's his job at the end of the day to
18:52develop players and to get the best out of them. But it's definitely going to be tough when you
18:56look at some of the rivals they've got and some of the other teams in League One. It really is
19:02going to be a big challenge to stay in the league, let alone to push obviously for those higher
19:07places. But if any manager is going to do it, it's Scott Lindsay and he's got experience in proving
19:13people wrong. So I really hope he can do it again. But I wouldn't say it's unfair to say that Cawley
19:17are one of the favourites to go down this time. I think it wasn't unfair last year to say they would
19:21finish League Two with the worst tally. I think that was always a bit over the top. This time
19:26around, you can see that there's clear arguments as to why Cawley would be probably one of the
19:31favourites to struggle. But I really hope they don't and the players come in and really settle
19:36down well. And we've seen some good signs in pre-season. Obviously, at Palace, the defence was
19:42extremely leaky. But going forward, they can clearly score goals. And if they can score
19:46goals against the Premier League side, then they can definitely score goals against League One
19:50opposition as well. But I think, yeah, there's definitely some promising signs and just time
19:54will tell to see how they get on. I think that first game against Blackpool will be a really good
19:59telling sign as to how far they've come in pre-season.
20:02Yeah, it's going to be an interesting one. And this season's also going to be a bit different,
20:06Sam, with the EFL after a deal with Sky. There's going to be more than 20 Cawley Town matches to
20:13be shown live on TV. How exciting is that, Sam? And what does it mean for the Reds and their fans?
20:20I think it's a bit of a double-edged sword, isn't it? Because I think it is great that
20:23there's that exposure for the club. And as we saw, obviously, when they went to Wembley and
20:27you saw, obviously, the national exposure they've got and everyone seems to be talking about Cawley
20:30Town, which is brilliant. And that's kind of what you want. Well, apart from when, obviously,
20:34the advertising players on TV and other teams can see a bit there. That's the only problem, really.
20:40But I think this season is definitely great that there will be games on TV. But obviously,
20:46there's the other element to it, which is that, obviously, it does impact the schedule and that
20:51can affect fans with their own jobs and things like that. And if it's going to be a midweek
20:56games and whatnot. And Scott Lindsay, we understand, is not too happy, to say the least,
21:01that the Birmingham fixture has been moved in December from the Saturday the 21st to Monday
21:06the 23rd, which does give them a lot less time over the Christmas period to prepare, obviously,
21:11for the Boxing Day game as well. So, yeah, we have heard that Scott is not too pleased about that. I
21:16think Mark's due to be chatting with him about that in the near future as well. So there's
21:22definitely two sides to the story. And it's definitely positive, but there also is problems
21:27with it when it comes down to the schedule and to how it affects on players, fans and the manager
21:32as well. And just on a different note, Chairman Preston Johnson and Vice Chair Ben Levin were
21:39quizzed at the Fans Forum on Monday night. You were there, Mark. How did it go? And what was
21:44discussed? Actually, I found it a really positive evening. I've been to a couple before where you
21:51got slightly agitated fans who are not aggressive, but have got an agenda when they go to these
21:56things. But this seemed positive. Obviously, it's a good time to do it. They've got promotion and we
22:02haven't started the season yet. So they haven't gone on a run where they've got a few losses or
22:06anything yet, which I'm hoping they won't have, obviously. But it was really positive. And there
22:11was lots of questions. The EFL Sky deal was asked about how much money that's bringing into the
22:16club. And they couldn't put an exact figure on it. But with the promotion and that deal,
22:22it's brought about an extra £800,000, £900,000 into the club. So that's a really big deal for
22:26a club like Crawley. So they talked about that. They talked about the stadium was quite a big
22:31discussion because they're in talks with Crawley Borough Council to buy the stadium. And they were
22:36sort of asked what plans they had for the stadium if they were successful in buying. They didn't go
22:41into loads, but they said they've got loads they want to do, but they're not going to make those
22:45improvements until they own the stadium because they're not going to spend money on something
22:49they don't own because there's no point to it. But they seemed quite positive that they would
22:54actually strike a deal with the council. So that will be a really big step forward for the club
22:59because I think they've got plans to expand. Certainly that east stand that has the temporary,
23:05it looks like a big gazebo. Yeah, I think they want to expand out there and then plans for the
23:10away ends and they talked about getting food trucks there and everything. But they also talked
23:15about the merchandise. Fans want to know where, because it's quite a small club shop at Crawley
23:20if you've ever been. It's in the ticket office and it's very small. But Ben Levin talked about
23:25when he goes to a football club, the first place he goes to is the club shop and he says there's
23:29some that are just amazing at this level. I mean, MK Don's we saw last year when I went for the
23:34playoff semi-final, an amazing club shop. So they're looking at possibly expanding that at
23:39the ground but also having pop-up shops around the town, maybe at Gatwick, maybe at County Mall.
23:45So there was lots of chat about that, sorting out the website, sorting out the online ticketing
23:50service. One fan said he goes and watches Horsham a lot and he said Horsham are what,
23:54four tiers below Crawley and their online ticketing system is so much more advanced
23:59than Crawley. So they said they were looking at that. They've reviewed four different systems at
24:03the moment so they're hoping to have that in by Christmas. So there was lots of really good,
24:07positive chat about moving the club forward, which is where they need to be. They want to
24:13become a sustainable Ligue 1 football club and at the moment I think they're still a Ligue 2
24:17football club in Ligue 1 now. So if they can sort of grow the club off the pitch as well as on it,
24:24then I think they stand a good step. It was really positive hearing Preston and Ben Levin,
24:29they were really honest. If there wasn't anything they couldn't answer, they said
24:34we don't know the answer to that yet, but hopefully next time we meet we can have
24:39something in place for that. They're willing to listen to fans' ideas as well, which is great.
24:53So first up we've got Crawley Town against Blackpool,
24:58first game of the season. How are you going for this one, Mark?
25:01I'm going to go ultra positive. I think it'll be a huge crowd and I think they'll get Crawley
25:08pumping. Although it could be tough, Blackpool are obviously a former Premier League team,
25:12but I'm going to go for a 2-1 Crawley Town win and get the season off to a flyer.
25:17I think that's a good one. Sam, are you as optimistic?
25:22Not quite as optimistic. I think it'll be a draw. I think they'll start off with a
25:251-1 draw against a team with lots of history, a big team in Blackpool. It should be a good game
25:31and a really good start to their League One campaign, but I think it'll be a tight 1-1 draw.
25:36Win or draw, Henry? Or defeat? Which one are you going for?
25:40I won't say defeat, otherwise Mark might get me.
25:46I mean, I don't know Crawley near enough as much as you guys, but the fact that they've had so
25:52many sort of additions and comings and goings, I feel like it'll be a draw. I feel like they'll
25:56have a really positive start, but I do think it'll be a 1-1 draw, as Sam said.
26:00And a draw won't be a bad result either, I don't think. I think that'll be a good positive start.
26:04Yeah, yeah. I'm going for a 2-0 win for Crawley.
26:10On Tuesday night, the Fixers come thinking fast already.
26:13They've got the League Cup at home to Swindon Town. How are you going with that one, Mark?
26:19Scott Lindsay's old side, they absolutely battered them on New Year's Day this year.
26:24They've been 3-0 at home in the league and it was the sore start of their real push for the play-offs.
26:29You've got to predict Crawley win. They had a horrible draw last year at Exeter away and
26:32went out in the first round. I think this might be a cup that they look to target,
26:36to have some really big games, good Tuesday night games at the Broadfield Stadium or somewhere else.
26:40So, I'm going to go for a 2-0 win this time.
26:432-0 win in the Cup. Sam, what do you think of the Cup win, League Cup?
26:48I think Crawley will win this one as well. I'll go for a 2-1 win.
26:52Yeah. Henry, Scott Lindsay against his former team?
26:55Yeah, that sounds pretty tasty, to be fair. I'll say a 1-0.
27:02Well, all a positive start for Crawley. You can catch up with all of the latest sports news.
