00:44at Anfield, where Brighton were beaten 2-1 by Liverpool.
00:4730, Cadioglu's fine strike saw the Reds trail at half time. The second half goals from Cody
00:52Geppo and Mo Salah saw Liverpool win the game and move top of the league. Sum that
00:57game up for us, please, Darren. It seemed like a case of what might have been for Albion.
01:01Yeah, I think that's exactly right, really. It was sort of frustrating and very good in
01:07equal measures, really. So, I think they had to come back from that with mixed feelings,
01:12knowing that the first half performance was probably, many people have said it was probably
01:17one of their best displays of the season and certainly one of their best displays under
01:22Fabian Hersele as well. They really took the game to Liverpool just as they needed to. They
01:30were without Carlos Bolivar as well, who's been one of their best players this season.
01:35But they had Hinshelwood and Iari in midfield and those two did really well. They played
01:40very well against, you know, the likes of Alexis McAllister, the former Brighton player.
01:47And they controlled the game, really, in the first half and had quite a few opportunities.
01:52Ferdi Cadioglu, he scored his first Premier League goal for Brighton in the first half.
01:58Really nice, really nice strike. But then, yeah, as you say, it's just been a bit of a problem.
02:04We've spoke about it a few times on the podcast that piecing together a full 90 minutes has
02:10really been an issue for Brighton. But they're up against one of the best teams in the world
02:16at the moment and Liverpool came back strongly. And as you say, Anfield really got behind the team.
02:24Some, you know, some stadiums, they go against the teams. But when Liverpool were in trouble,
02:29they really needed a boost from the crowd. And I think that, coupled by a few tactical
02:35tweaks from Slott and the fact that Brighton just backed off a little bit,
02:40saw Liverpool take over, really. And when you've got the likes of Mo Salah as well,
02:45he's such a good player. And, you know, he was, Pervis Estupina, he was, he did very well against
02:51him for the majority of the match. But you could just see he was just getting a bit tired towards
02:56the end and Salah took advantage of the way he does best and just whipped that one into the top
03:01corner. Their first goal was a bit fortunate. Gakpo sort of curled it in at the far post,
03:06missed everybody and just went in. But, yeah, it was a case of what might have been. Brighton
03:12were up to, you know, likely save fourth. And now, after all of the Premier League fixtures,
03:17they've dropped back down to eighth. So, it sort of has a bit more of a disappointing look to it.
03:23But, yeah, I think there's still quite a few positives they can take from that match, for sure.
03:30Well, post-match, Fabian Hertzler said Brighton missed a big opportunity to beat Liverpool,
03:36none more so than Jorginho Rutter's snatching the chance and firing Strattekeller in the second
03:41half. How close were the Seagulls to picking up three points at Liverpool, Henry? And do you agree
03:45with Hertzler's assessment? Yeah, I think you'd have to agree with it. I think there were some
03:50fantastic chances that they had in that first half that, if they go in and we're a little bit
03:55more ruthless, then the game's put to bed and it's an uphill mountain to climb for Liverpool.
04:01And, I mean, just one goal wasn't enough. We know the quality that they do have. I think,
04:07you know, Albion's most expensive signing, Rutter, didn't have the best of games. I mean,
04:11he's netted twice for us and he's assisted two so far in the Premier League for Brighton.
04:16We've seen some star quality from him, especially in that Tottenham comeback game. But unfortunately
04:21against Liverpool in the league, he missed that golden opportunity to get Brighton two goals up
04:26and it would have piled a lot more pressure on Liverpool. And in terms of that second half,
04:31maybe we would have had a more difficult uphill battle for Liverpool to face and
04:36maybe some of that brilliance that we saw from Salah wouldn't have counted as much. Maybe there
04:40would have been a point gained for the Albion here. But as Dara mentioned, the sort of slip
04:45in the league compared to sort of when we did go 1-0 up and saw sort of the league table,
04:51Brighton fans collectively would have been a bit disappointed. And I think Fabian Hurlitzer also
04:57seemed a bit disappointed by the sounds of things. And I think defensively that first goal
05:03for Brighton, it was a real shame. I think from the perspective of the defence really, because I
05:09think that Gakpo's supposed cross finding its way into the net into the 70th minute after Verbruggen
05:15had got some fantastic saves out for Brighton. And I think some good defending really did make heads
05:22drop, even though Brighton was still able to sort of make a few chances of their own that just wasn't
05:28enough. But I think overall, it just comes down to the ruthlessness that Fabian Hurlitzer has been
05:33saying a lot in his press conferences. And I still think that Brighton are lacking a little bit of
05:38that when they do get these golden opportunities.
05:41Well, Albion's performance at Liverpool coupled with excellent wins over Man United and Spurs,
05:46as Henry said, shows that they can well and truly mix it with the big boys.
05:50Darren, what will it take for the Seagulls to really close that gap between them and the Premier
05:54League's big six? Is there like a gap, do you reckon, in terms of experience and concentration
05:58at times?
06:00Yeah, yeah, it's exactly right. It does come down to that concentration. And I think that's
06:06something that Brighton are still coming to terms to as they get used to Fabian Hurlitzer's tactics
06:11and they try and get some of their experienced players back as well. Lewis Dunk was obviously
06:17missing from the defence. They've had Boliva missing from the midfield, João Pedro missing
06:22up front. So that's sort of the spine of that team. We're all missing against Liverpool.
06:28And I think once they get those players back and they start performing regularly together,
06:33that defensive line keeps changing due to injuries. Van Hecker's been out for a period,
06:38Estupinhan has been out, Lewis Dunk's been out. So I think once you get a settled back line,
06:44that's really going to help Brighton going forward. And hopefully,
06:48with the attacking threat that they've got, that experienced back line, once they play together,
06:53they can then take that next step and start to see these matches out. And I think if they do that,
06:59then they've got a great chance of reaching Europe once again this season. And just a quick
07:06mention on Bart Verbruggen as well. I think he's been exceptional this season. So he had a great
07:12Euros with Holland. He's the Netherlands number one. And I think the way he's been playing in the
07:18last few matches, one save he did from Nunes in the first half, in particular at Anfield,
07:24was just top class. And I think Brighton really have that goalkeeper now that can be steady
07:31at the back this season. And I think he's going to be a massive player for Brighton,
07:36especially when they do give chances away with Fabian Herzog's tactics of that high line.
07:41They need Verbruggen, a keeper of that stature, to really be at their best. And I think he's going
07:48to be a huge player for Brighton this season as well. Another player who impressed at Anfield
07:53was Cadioglu, who, as we said, netted his first Albion goal. How impressed have you been with him,
07:58Henry? Normally a full-back, he was on the wing, wasn't he, I think, at Anfield. He's
08:02shown that he's probably turning into Brighton's Mr Versatile at the moment.
08:06Definitely. I think he's really grown into the Premier League now. When he first came on as a
08:11sub against Ipswich for his first appearance, he did look a little bit nervous, as did the whole
08:16team. But he did look a little shaky when Brighton lost 40 away against Chelsea. There were some
08:22questions about the high line there, as well as a few defensive errors. But in recent games, though,
08:27and especially that Liverpool game that you mentioned from last week, his confidence has
08:31just grown so much through leaps and bounds. And the goal that he scored is going to give him so
08:38much more as well. And how he got enough power to get that shot from inside the corner of the box,
08:44with his back turned away from goal, into that post and in, was insane. And I think that it
08:51caught a lot of, not only the players and the goalkeeper, Keleha for Liverpool, but also the
08:56fans and the viewers watching at home, were very, very surprised. And I think that in terms of the
09:03way he's been playing, he's going to be a really key player for Brighton. Especially as Derek
09:09mentioned, we need to shore up that defence, get our back line sorted, have a regular back line
09:14where we've got less injuries. And he's going to be a big part of that. And I think the fact that
09:19he's going to be linking even more with Lewis Dunk, we haven't had that many opportunities for
09:23him to link as well as we'd like to with Lewis Dunk. And getting Van Hecker in the side as well,
09:30and getting things back to the back line that we know, and having him as that addition will be
09:35fantastic. He just adds that little bit of attacking threat. And he's almost in some ways
09:41able to go at the attackers a bit like Matoma, but from a more defensive position. He's got that
09:47same sort of guile to run at players and create something from defence into attack, as Matoma
09:54goes from midfield to attack and can create some really good chances. And I mean, that price tag
10:01that we got him for the €30m plus an additional €5m for performance related add-ons, that was the
10:09transfer equal to transfer record for the Turkish Super League. So I think that although it's a
10:15signing where Brighton have splashed a bit more cash, as we know, with the signings and the summer
10:21transfer window spendings that they got last season, I think he's looking to be a really
10:25worthwhile investment for the Albion and that price tag is looking pretty good at the moment.
10:31He had a lovely suit as well when he was unveiled, because he was unveiled before
10:34the Crawley League Cup game. Wonderful suit. Yeah, he looked good.
10:40Stylish on and off the pitch.
10:41You've got to look good before you can play good.
10:43Absolutely. Well, this Saturday, Steve Brighton hosts title holders Man City
10:49in the Battle of the Walking Wounded. How do you see this one going, Darren? Probably quite a bad
10:54time to face City, considering I think it's the first time they've lost three in a row since about
10:572018 or 2017. How do you see this one going and what's the latest injury news from both camps?
11:02Yeah, as you say, the Walking Wounded, it's going to be a race for the medical department
11:08from both teams this week. I think there's, yeah, for City, I think Jack Grealish is definitely out.
11:15De Bruyne, he played the last sort of few minutes in Lisbon and he probably will,
11:20he probably will be available, but obviously they've got Rodri out.
11:23Stones is an injury doubt as well. Oscar Bob, he's out still for City.
11:29Jeremy Doku, again, he played in the final stages in the defeat in Sporting Lisbon.
11:34So, there will be a week in City, but they're still a very dangerous team and
11:39so you don't quite know how it's going to go. Is it a good time to play them? Is it not?
11:44It's going to be tricky to see, but I do think, though, with Brighton at home as well,
11:51it's a really good opportunity for them to try and build on that performance against Liverpool
11:56and again, challenge, as Herzele said previously, challenge the establishment really and I think
12:01this is a great chance. Louis Dunk, I don't know if he's going to be back. Carlos Bolivar,
12:08I think that knee issue is going to take a little bit longer to heal and I think he's going to be
12:13doubtful for the City game. So, after the international break, probably for them too.
12:17Jal Pedro, he's going to be possible, I think. We'll get more information at the press conference
12:22first thing tomorrow morning. Yassi Nayyari, he did an ankle injury at Liverpool, so he's
12:28going to be assessed as well and then obviously James Milner is still out of his hamstring.
12:32Soli March is still out and Yancuba Minter as well, he'll be assessed before the match. So,
12:38yeah, there's going to be lots of work in the medical department trying to get these players
12:41fit in time for the match. So, yeah, that's going to be key but keep up to date. We'll give
12:48all the updates on Sussex World once we go to the press conference first thing tomorrow morning.
12:54Absolutely. We look forward to the Premier League's first five-a-side game at the Amex.
12:59It could be, yeah. We're going to take a quick break and when we come back,
13:02we're going to talk all things Crawley Town, who are playing in League One,
13:05not League Two, as I said earlier. Welcome back to part two. Crawley Town are through to the
13:10second round of the FA Cup but, my word, they made hard work of it at non-league mainhead on
13:14Saturday. Training to Sean McColsky's second-half strike, Toby Malarkey levelled for the Reds in
13:20second-half stuff his time before Tolish Awumni fired Crawley in front an extra time. It might
13:24not have been pretty, Mark, but by hook or by crook, Crawley are through to the next round.
13:28Sum that up for us, please. Yeah, it's a funny one, isn't it, because you never want to go to
13:32a non-league side in these early rounds of the FA Cup. I wasn't at the game but it looked like a
13:39typical kind of Crawley performance. They dominated possession, they had more chances,
13:45but they just didn't score. They were getting to Burton in a bit but it was a similar thing. They
13:52are creating chances but they're lacking that cutting edge up front. It was a late, late goal,
14:00I think it was five, six minutes into injury time, wasn't it, that Toby Malarkey scored.
14:05And fair play to Toby Malarkey because I think he's played almost every minute of this season,
14:13which is incredible for a defender. He's played in all the EFL Trophy games, the League Cup two
14:20games against Brighton and Swindon and he must be on his last legs already. He's managed to pop up
14:28and score an important goal that kept him in the game and then luckily they managed to get him.
14:35It's good to see Tolisso won me because after he signed no one really knew what he was like
14:41because he hadn't played for ages. And then he made a couple of subs appearances, one against
14:45Wickham. I was particularly impressed with him when he came on for the last half hour against
14:49Wickham. And for him to get the winner, I think it shows that they've got a good player there.
14:56But I mean, at the end of the day, does it really matter what the performance is like in the FA Cup
15:00if you just get through? You've got to get through and they have.
15:04Yes. Well, speaking of that, nice segue, Mark. Goal scorer Malarkey praised his team mate's mentality
15:13after not slipping up on a potential banana skin at Maidenhend. But some fans weren't overly
15:18impressed by Crawley's performance. And what do you make of that, Mark? Obviously, I don't have
15:23really any affiliation to Crawley Town, but from my point of view, I surely think they can't quibble
15:26about advancing to the second round and being one win away from potentially a lucrative third round
15:31tie. Exactly. And we know they've got a home draw in the second round. So, yes, by hook or by crook
15:39in the first round, if you are playing a league, a non-league team or a league below team, you've
15:46just got to win. And that's what they did. And they showed a lot of spirit to be able to get
15:50there as well. And fans have got to take heart from that. Yes, you've got the naysayers and it
15:55was the same last night against Burton as well. But Crawley are still in a transition period.
16:00They've got a new young manager, a mostly new young team that's still sort of trying to gel.
16:06It's still got a click. Yes, I imagine it would be they'd be more advanced as a squad if Scott
16:11Lindsay was still in charge. But they've had this transition. They're learning a new way of playing
16:16to some extent. It's not hugely different from Lindsay, but Elliot's got his own ideas. And I
16:22think and there were a lot of changes on Saturday as well. Jack Rolls played a lot. Shawan Meelock,
16:27we said, played. So, yes, fans, I know it's hard to be patient as a football fan because you just
16:35want wins. That's all you want. But, yes, you're through in the FA Cup. You're in the second round.
16:42You've got a home tie against a team you've just beaten three now. And, yes, like you said,
16:47they're one game away from what could be what could be a really lucrative game. Yes, you haven't got
16:51the replays anymore, but you draw away Old Trafford, away at Man City, away at Arsenal, away at
16:57Tottenham, away at Chelsea. It's great. And the amount of money it brings in as well. And that
17:03just helps the club grow. So and it gives them more attention and it's a chance for the players
17:08to really impress on a bigger stage. So, yes, I don't read too much into performance in an FA Cup
17:14game against them on the league side away, to be honest. It's a shame it had to go to extra time
17:23because it did. I think it showed last night against Burton that there was there was a bit of
17:29some tired legs out there and that. But they got through and they're home on November the 30th,
17:34I think, is against Lincoln now. So, yeah, I can't complain too much.
17:38Will they be happy with that, Lincoln at home?
17:40I think so. I think I think all you're looking for in these stages is a home game and and they
17:47will take heart in the fact that they've beaten with a really good performance, Lincoln, in recent
17:52memory. So I think so. I mean, yes, they'd be probably happy with Chesham at home, but yeah,
17:58or a League Two side at home or any non-league side at home. But Lincoln are a decent side,
18:03but Crawley have proven they can beat them. So, yeah, I'd be happy with it.
18:07Absolutely. Well, on Tuesday night, the Reds returned to league one action.
18:11They were held to a goalless draw at bottom of the table, Burton, a result which saw the Reds
18:14move up to 21st in the table, but still leaves them in the relegation zone. Some of that performance
18:19up for us, Mark. We chatted briefly about it before the podcast and the first half especially
18:23doesn't sound like it was a classic. Oh, God, no. It was quite a poor
18:28standard of football all round, I thought, certainly in the first half. Crawley did
18:32actually start quite well. First 10 minutes, they were really on the front foot. I mean,
18:35they could have scored twice in 90 seconds. First, Gavin Houlihan crossed to, just missed
18:44Joy McKenna diving in, just missed it, but it went out for a corner and from the resolving corner,
18:48Toby Malarkey headed over the bar closely. So they could have got really on top early. And I think if
18:54they'd scored early, they would have just run right against Burton because Burton, you don't
19:00see many teams that deserve to be bottom of the league, but they were turgid. Even when they were
19:06on top, the Lithuanian player, Kalanis... I'm going to butcher his name, so I'm not even going to try.
19:16He looked dangerous and he had a couple of chances. There was one time where Bradley Ibrahim got caught
19:20out by him on the edge of the area, but he sort of snatched his shot and Conor Truman made an easy
19:26save. But after that, after they sort of weathered that and got to half time, they changed a little
19:32bit in the second half, pressed a bit higher and they were all over them and they created so many
19:37chances. Quite a few chances, so many is a bit exaggerating. But Jeremy Kelly came into it more,
19:42Ronan Darcy came into it more, Panucci Camara came on as a sub, but all the best chances fell
19:49to him. He had three really gilded chances, but missed, fluffed his lines on all of them,
19:54hitting straight at a keeper, not getting full connections on them. A couple of good saves, but
19:58either side of him, he could have placed him a bit better. But that's the way it's going for
20:04Crawley at the moment. They're dominating, but they're just not scoring. They're just lacking
20:07that real cutting edge. So that needs to change if they're going to do that against Huddersfield
20:12on Saturday. They need to get a result there at home. And they do normally raise their game
20:17against the bigger side. So I think they can take heart from their second half performance, but
20:21they really do need to start showing a little bit more, being more clinical up front.
20:27Well, Reds midfielder Max Anderson said the draw at Burton was a point to build on,
20:31but do you think it was a good point away from home for Crawley Mark or did it kind of feel
20:34like an opportunity missed after the second half? I think it was very important they didn't lose
20:39last night. So you could say a point's good, but after what they did in the second half,
20:45it is a big missed opportunity. Getting three points would have just lifted everyone a bit more.
20:50Getting a point and the clean sheet was an important thing as well because they haven't
20:55kept many clean sheets this year at all. I think the Lincoln one was the first one in quite a while
21:01and that was their first 0-0 draw since Walsall, the last home game of the season. No, it was the
21:07last game of the previous season. Sorry, 2022-23 season when Scott Lindsay was in charge and they
21:16just needed that point to secure safety in League Two. So that was the last time they drew 0-0. So
21:22clean sheet was a big thing. Point good, it was important not to lose, but yeah, it is,
21:28I think it is a big missed opportunity. If camera would have just put one of those away though,
21:33I think if they'd scored one early on or early in the second half, it would have been two or three.
21:39Absolutely. And you'd mentioned it there. This Saturday sees the Reds host Huddersfield,
21:43who were sent crashing out of the FA Cup at non-league Tamworth on Friday evening.
21:46How do you see that one going? It's another side desperate to prove a point, isn't it, Huddersfield?
21:51I think so, yeah, but I was speaking to one of their media guys earlier and he was saying that
21:56there was a lot of anger after that result against Tamworth. They could have gone into this game,
22:06both gone out to a non-league side, couldn't they? But luckily Crawley got through and that's what
22:10they should take heart from. I mean, you look at Crawley, everybody's sort of a little bit doom
22:14and gloom when you read all the forums and everything, but in the last four games, they've
22:18won two, drawn one and lost one. So it's not actually that bad when you look at it in that
22:23sense. But yeah, Huddersfield will want to prove a point, but Crawley do always, like I said earlier,
22:30they always raise their game against these bigger sides. Lincoln were fourth when they came to the
22:34Broadfield Stadium, Crawley won 3-0. Huddersfield, one thing the media guy said as well is that
22:41they go into every game this season thinking they've got a win because they're a big side.
22:46I think Rob Elliott called them a juggernaut last night, which is a strange thing for Huddersfield
22:53because in the Premier League and the Championship in recent years, they haven't been expected to win
22:59every game. They're expected to win every game and that puts pressure on them and Crawley should be
23:03able to take advantage of that. We'll get on to the predictions in a second, but I'm feeling good
23:09about this about this Saturday.
23:13Before we go to Crawley-Huddersfield, we'll start with Brighton City. Darren, how do you see this one going?
23:21Yeah, as we mentioned, you don't know quite how City are going to react to this one, but
23:25yeah, a former Brighton striker Victor Goycarez, he scored three against them in midweek. So
23:30I'm going to go for a Danny Welbeck hat-trick and a 3-2.
23:353-2. Henry, how do you reckon this one will go at the Amex?
23:38I love that. I reckon it'll be 3-1. I reckon it'll be 3-1 to Brighton. I think they've gone.
23:45I think they've gone off the rails. I think that they're scrambling at the moment and I think
23:49now is literally the best time to be playing City. I think Albion fans will be licking their
23:54lips for this one.
23:55Blimey, I didn't expect to hear such optimism. Mark, do you share this optimism?
24:00I'm going to temper it a little bit. I'm going to go for a 2-2 draw. I think there'll be goals.
24:05I know Guardiola's always loved Brighton, hasn't he? I think he always praises how Brighton play,
24:10whoever's in charge of them. So yeah, I'm going to go for 2-2. Danny Welbeck definitely scoring
24:15that.
24:15Yeah, Danny Welbeck definitely scoring. And yeah, we spoke about Crawley-Hudsonfield then,
24:19Mark. So you're optimistic about this one then?
24:22Yeah, I'm going to go Crawley to win by one goal. I'm going to go 2-1. I can't see him
24:26keeping a clean sheet, but I'm going to go 2-1. Will Swan and Tolisha want me to score.
24:32Darren, how do you reckon that one's going to go at the Broadfield?
24:35I'm going to go for a 1-1, I think, for this one. 1-1.
24:40And Henry yourself?
24:42I think there'll be goals. I think it'll be 2-2. I think it'll be a really good game to watch
24:47that end to end one because I feel like Crawley will be up for this and Huddersfield will be
24:52feeling that pressure, as Mark said.
24:54And finally, on the biggest game of the week and the biggest competition in England, Crawley are
24:59travelling to Wickham in the EFL Trophy. It's a tournament everyone wants to win when they're
25:04growing up playing football as a child. Mark, how do you see this one going?
25:08Well, if Wickham's performance last night anything go right, when they've beaten Stockport
25:115-0 away from home, their top of the league one. Yeah, I mean, I think Wickham will probably
25:16rest some players, but Crawley will have a change squad. I think I'm going to go for a draw. I'm
25:21going to go for a 1-1 draw and I don't think that's enough for Crawley to go through. But
25:26yeah, I think 1-1.
25:28Sorry, this might show my ignorance. Does it go to penalties at the end of it?
25:32It does and they get a bonus point. So if they, oh yeah, sorry, 1-1,
25:36Crawley to win on penalties and go through with the bonus point.
25:40Darren, what do you reckon about this one?
25:42Well, I think with this, I'd say 2-0 to Wickham. I think they've obviously had a good result last
25:49weekend. So yeah, sorry, Crawley.
25:52And Henry, finally, and last but not least, how do you reckon this one's going to go?
25:56I think I might have to echo Darren here, but I feel like it would be a 2-1 to Wickham. I feel
26:01like Crawley will get a goal, but I feel like it won't be enough, just about.
26:07I'm not happy.
26:08Mark can't quite believe it. But anyway, we will have to wait and see about that one.
