00:00That's how I danced my way to B-Boying World Championship.
00:08You're called Flying Machine.
00:17Yes.
00:18Hi, Flying Machine.
00:19Hi.
00:20How did you get this name, Flying Machine?
00:21What's the story behind it?
00:22Yeah, I started off B-Boying like 14 years back when I was very small, say like 10 years
00:27old.
00:28I used to just like, you know, try off flying around like, you know, in the park, like just
00:33doing a backflip.
00:34So I had this bunch of people that I used to like, you know, break while I started off.
00:39So they actually started calling me Flying Machine because they were all like, you know,
00:43doing footwork.
00:44They're like, you fly, we never see you like doing some footwork.
00:47Growing up as a young boy in Mumbai, how did you first get inspired by the hip hop culture?
00:52And when did you decide to take that step into B-Boying?
00:55So I actually was introduced to hip hop by Eminem.
00:57When I used to hear all these songs, like, it actually, you know, made me move.
01:01I got introduced to breaking through this video of Red Bull BC One.
01:06It had this song of 50 Cent, it's called, it was in the club, like,
01:12Go shorty, it's your birthday.
01:14So I kind of liked that song and it just like, you know, got me like attracted to it.
01:19And actually how these people were moving, I was just, I was just like, yo, it was very
01:24eye catching.
01:25And like, you know, I just fell in love with it.
01:27How did you manage to convince your parents about B-Boying?
01:31Was their reaction a little stiff in the beginning?
01:33Yeah, actually, I was very introvert.
01:35I didn't really tell mom or dad.
01:38It's super weird for them because I belong to a Muslim family and I'm the first artist.
01:42They were like, what are you doing in your life?
01:44Put your mind to the school, put your mind to studies.
01:47But I actually wanted to follow my heart and enjoy my life.
01:50It was very difficult for them to understand.
01:52But until 2015, I won this Red Bull BC One in 2015 and actually got this ticket to like
02:00go to South Korea.
02:01It was a Asia Pacific competition.
02:03I qualified from like nationals to go to as a first Indian.
02:08In my family, no one had actually took a flight until that time.
02:12So they're like, oh, wow, like, okay, you're going to South Korea, you're going to compete
02:16against all these Asian people.
02:18And after that, like, they started pushing me and they're like, okay, you're actually
02:22on the right track.
02:27As such an eminent figure in the field, do you take it upon yourself to do something for
02:33the aspirants?
02:35In these world championships, like the ratio of Indian B-Boys is very less, bro.
02:40I go there as a representation of like the whole country, right?
02:44So I really want to like put like, you know, the world's attention to like India.
02:47I think sometimes that is using me as a tool for people to like actually look at and be
02:51like, okay, I'm the next, you know, Arif or I'm the next flying machine.
02:55I want to travel the world like him and actually put the whole country to the map.
03:00Talking about putting India to the map, B-Boying is now a part of Olympics.
03:03What are your thoughts firstly that B-Boying has become so big that now it's part of Olympics?
03:07To be honest, I feel like actually there's someone who has recognized breaking.
03:12Dancers were like, oh, this is not a dance form.
03:14People were like, what monkey is dancing like this?
03:16Olympics is a massive thing.
03:18No other dance form is in Olympics.
03:20Like we are none less than an athlete.
03:22Like you have to fight against gravity.
03:24You have to throw yourself.
03:25You have to land at a perfect spot.
03:28That's why I feel very proud that I'm a B-Boy and breaking is actually recognized as an Olympic sport.
