Aston Villa 2 Crystal Palace 2 - Matt Maher analysis
Transcript
00:00Good evening from Villa Park, where it finished. Villa 2, Palace 2. Villa's winless run in
00:07all competitions extends to six matches after a really chaotic afternoon and the downpour
00:13of the wind of Storm Burt. Well, not so much the wind, but it did rain throughout the game
00:18and it added up to a really crazy game. Palace going ahead through Ismail Asar inside the
00:24first four minutes. Villa apparently had worked overtime really during the international
00:30break, Unai Emery and his analysts looking at where things had been going wrong in previous
00:35games. Well, whatever work went in, it kind of fell apart quite early on when Sar went
00:40clean through on goal. All it took was two passes from Villa's left-back position to
00:45send him away. Villa fought back, they equalised through Oli Watkins, a fine goal, a great
00:51pass from Pere Torres, an even better pass from John McGinn, great finish from Oli Watkins,
00:55Leon Bailey, who's been so out of form, nearly scores a superb goal, hits the bar, then gets
01:01fouled, missed by the referee, VAR sends the referee to the monitor, he gives a penalty,
01:07Uri Tielemann steps up. Villa's first penalty of the season, we were wondering who would
01:10take it, it was Tielemann's, saved by Dean Henderson. His second great save of the game
01:15actually denied Watkins, before Watkins had scored with a save reminiscent of Nigel Spink
01:22for Villa in Rotterdam against Bayern Munich in 1982. But Villa then, having missed the
01:28penalty, 1-1, it's deja vu from Liverpool at Anfield, ball goes out for a corner, Villa
01:36get caught on the can from their own corner, Justin Devaney scores for Palace to put them
01:392-1 up at half-time, two minutes after two minutes they miss the penalty. Villa, second
01:45half, push for an equaliser, they finally got it with 13 minutes to go through Ross
01:49Barkley, but then it was Palace who came closest to winning it, a fantastic save from Emi Martínez,
01:55Dindaying, Jeffrey Schlupp, Emi Unai Emery rather, thought his side should have won the
02:00game, XG would suggest that they should have as well, but anyone who was here today would
02:05say that draw was probably the fair result. Villa just too many basic mistakes and it's
02:09just happened a bit too often really. They were missing Ezra Konza, his leadership in
02:13defence, but the fact is they've just got to cut out the errors otherwise this winless
02:17run could continue.
