A domestic violence support service in southern New South Wales is putting the names of almost every women killed by domestic violence in Australia this year into the windows of local businesses. Paint the Hilltops in Purple event hopes to spark healthy conversations about domestic violence with families and young people.

00:00The Young Crisis Accommodation Centre has coloured Young and other towns and villages
00:06in southern New South Wales in purple.
00:10It's a day to spread awareness of domestic and family violence and make sure women and
00:14children who have been killed due to domestic violence so far this year are not statistics.
00:19YCAC have placed the names of women and children who have been killed by DV in 2024 in shop
00:26front windows right across Young CBD and in other towns and villages like Barua and
00:32Hardin.
00:3358 women have been killed by domestic violence so far in 2024.
00:38Manager of the centre Kerry Palmer says it's the first time they have done something like
00:43this, although it may be confronting, she says it's needed.
00:47Ms Palmer says she hopes this will spark conversations with families and young children, particularly
00:52men, about domestic violence in our country.
00:56So we want to make, it's very important that we do speak to our young males about respectful
01:01relationships and about gender stereotypes and the way we treat each other.
01:06It's incredibly important that we do spread that message.
01:08Respect.org.au is a fantastic resource for teachers, parents and anybody in a position
01:13where they're teaching young men about these things and we encourage people to jump on
01:17there because the resources are fantastic and it gives you some great conversation starters.
01:22Schools and early childhood education centres have also taken part in today's event.
01:27Social service students from TAFE and Young have also been heavily involved, putting up
01:32love hearts and displaying purple balloons across the CBD.
01:37Today's event hit home to many people in the community.
01:40According to the Federal Government, rates of domestic violence are higher in regional,
01:44remote and rural areas across Australia.
