00:00The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology, together with Alaminos local government unit and partner agencies,
00:06launched a casket-making livelihood program for persons deprived of liberty and indigent families.
00:13Philippine Information Agency, Pangasinan January Del Rosario has the details.
00:19A new, unique livelihood program for persons deprived of liberty or PDLs was launched in Alaminos City
00:26by the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology
00:29at the Alaminos City Jail Male Dormitory
00:32to equip them with skills for societal reintegration
00:35and produce affordable caskets for indigent families in need.
00:39Instead of the usual carpentry or furniture-making as a source of livelihood inside the jail,
00:44they are engaged in making caskets for the less fortunate who have lost loved ones.
01:00And of course,
01:14According to Jail Chief Inspector Marlon Nitorada,
01:17the casket-making program began this May
01:20through the initiative of 1st District Congressman Arthur Celeste
01:24in partnership with the local government of Alaminos
01:27and the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority.
01:30Nitorada said that 25 PDLs have completed basic carpentry training
01:35and obtained a national certificate too,
01:38which they can use not only for making caskets while in jail,
01:41but also upon their release to start a new life.
01:44Each casket made earned them P1,500,
01:48which was shared among the PDLs involved in its production.
01:51The program aims to produce more caskets to be sold at affordable prices,
01:56ranging from P5,000 to P7,000 for indigent families in need.
02:01With the help of the local government of Alaminos,
02:04the PDLs were again provided with materials and other accessories for making additional caskets.
02:10Through the cooperation of various government agencies,
02:13the beneficiaries of the program not only gain skills and livelihood,
02:17but also the opportunity to contribute to their community.
