00:00And we are back for El Coast to Coast, here on a Wednesday.
00:03And yes, it still is a golf Wednesday on C2C.
00:07Only a couple more left this year.
00:10The swing season's coming to a close,
00:12but the Zozo Championship.
00:15We head to the Far East.
00:17Japan is where they have this, at the Accordia,
00:21where they had the Olympics, of course,
00:22a couple of years ago.
00:24And we have a pretty decent field.
00:25No cut, 78 golfers.
00:28Some of the bigger names, like we have not seen so far,
00:30here in the fall.
00:32Cam Stewart is with me every golf Wednesday,
00:34as we give our picks for this week's event.
00:37Cam, good to see you, as always.
00:39I do like this event.
00:41You've had some bigger names win this event,
00:44whether it was Colin Morikawa last year,
00:46we've, Keegan Bradley has won.
00:49Of course, way back, Tigers won.
00:50So you usually have a couple of names
00:53that show up for this limited field event.
00:57You gotta tell you though, Carver,
00:58this is also a spot where there's a lot of Japanese
01:00and unknowns that people,
01:02like for top 20s and stuff like that,
01:03you can blow up boxcars.
01:05Carver, I gotta tell you,
01:06I'm gonna miss the swing season,
01:07but second the week before, third was Schmid.
01:10Another, like, Harris English got close.
01:12Actually, we had a really good week.
01:13I'm enjoying, like, for the top 10s and 20s.
01:15I just can't hit a winner.
01:16But this week, Colin Morikawa, defending champion.
01:19I'm going a little bit deep.
01:21Like, I like Morikawa, but I think we can do,
01:23there's a couple guys in the 28 to, you know, 35,
01:2660 to one range that we can tackle.
01:27Hey, I wouldn't be surprised if Chalk won.
01:29Schauffele's there, and a couple other big hitters.
01:32Thomas will do well.
01:33It looks like he's turning his game around,
01:34but I'm going a little bit deeper down the board, Carver.
01:38Yeah, I think that that might be the way to go,
01:40especially since, Cam,
01:41as you look at the chalk for this event,
01:43like, this is like a little too much for me.
01:46I mean, four and a half to one for Zander,
01:48six and a half to one for Morikawa.
01:50Eight, Hideaki.
01:51Matsuyama, eight, like that.
01:52I got three guys under 10,
01:54and we have, usually have a rule around here, Cam.
01:57We don't take anyone under 10.
01:58We don't, nothing under double digits
02:01for me and you with the picks for any event,
02:03let alone the Zozo over in Japan,
02:06which by the way, remember this too,
02:07if you're playing this event,
02:09this event tees off in about three and a half hours.
02:13Yeah, 7.45 PM East is the tee,
02:17because remember, 13 hours are right about there, right, Cam?
02:2112, 13 hour, 11, 12, 13 hour difference.
02:24So at 7.45 tonight is tomorrow morning in Japan.
02:27So if you're gonna get your slips in,
02:29make sure you do it in the next couple of hours here
02:31before they start.
02:32All right, Cam, here's where I'm going for the board.
02:35I took one guy kind of up there,
02:37not in the range we were just talking about,
02:39but a bigger name, Justin Thomas at 20 to one.
02:42I believe him and his wife are about to have a baby
02:44in a couple of weeks, Cam, his first child.
02:46It's all, the focus of Just Golf is about to end for JT.
02:50Why not get one more win before he has to go deal with that
02:54for a very long time?
02:55Who's been playing really well on this swing season, Cam?
02:57Bo Hassler.
02:58Bo Hassler.
02:59Yes.
03:00It just feels like one of these weeks
03:01it's gonna crack for him, 35 to one for him.
03:04This is just me beating myself over the head.
03:06I'm going with Max Homa at 50 to one.
03:08It's more just, I'm just chasing at this point.
03:11And I think the same thing with Cole, right?
03:13Super chase.
03:14Cole's like chasing too with 55 to one.
03:17And I did want to take one of the Japanese golfers here
03:20on the home track.
03:21And Hisatsun has been around for us all year on the tour.
03:25Ryo Hisatsun and 100 to one.
03:28Cam, remember, this is huge for these guys.
03:31I think there's about 20 golfers
03:33from the Japanese tour side of things.
03:36You know, they win, Cam.
03:37It's masters.
03:38It's, you know, two years on the tour.
03:41There's a lot of things for those guys at stake.
03:43This is a huge event.
03:44People don't understand.
03:45This is actually a big event.
03:46The Zozo, it's not just a Led Zeppelin album.
03:47Like, this is real.
03:48You win here, you're going to do quite well.
03:50Let's do this thing, Carver.
03:52You love this guy early.
03:53I'm taking him to win.
03:54Kurt Kitayama, like Bo Hassler,
03:56two of the hottest players in the world right now.
03:58The Gim Reaper.
03:59He's lurking.
04:00He's right behind you.
04:01He's just about to get you.
04:03Second last week.
04:04And Carver, look at me travel the world like my boy, Hanzer.
04:07You said, brother, I'm going to the Philippines.
04:09I got Rico Hoey at 66 to one.
04:11I got KH Lee.
04:12We got Korea.
04:13We got the Philippines.
04:14We got Japan.
04:15Let me tell you about Ken Seharada.
04:17This guy's actually the top player on the Japanese tour.
04:19Played this course and finished sixth.
04:21I got a take at my 110.
04:22And CT Pots and Pans for my boy, Carver.
04:25Too good of a price at 115 for CT Pans.
04:29We love CT Pots and Pans on Golf Wednesdays.
04:33One of our guys.
04:34He should be like 70 to one.
04:35Like, that guy was nuts.
04:36I got him coming up here too with something, Cam,
04:37in a moment.
04:38I do have CT on my card somewhere.
04:40Placements for me.
04:41I will go Matsuyama with a top five.
04:43He always plays well here.
04:44You expect him to do that.
04:45Top five at plus 180.
04:47Bo Hosser, I'll back it up.
04:49Top 10 at plus 300.
04:50Tom Hoagie Sandwich, top 10 at four to one.
04:53Then the top 20s.
04:54Novocaine, Andrew Novak.
04:56Plus 185 for the 20.
04:57Ryan Crazy Like a Fox.
04:59Top 20 at plus 200.
05:01And Satoshi Kodaira.
05:03Where has he been, Cam?
05:05He's here.
05:06Oh, where'd you get that number?
05:07Oh my God, I got plus 475.
05:10I should have shot more.
05:11What a score.
05:12750 at the book that I got that at this morning, Cam.
05:16So Kodaira, top 20.
05:18Very big number.
05:20Dude, I think there's one book I need to check in.
05:22He might be seven, eight to one,
05:23and I gotta put some more money in.
05:24I'm going with you.
05:25Morakawa, he won last year.
05:26Top five, plus 150.
05:28Sanjay M, very big tournament for him.
05:30Top 10, plus 110.
05:31I'm with you on the Hoagie Sandwich at plus 120.
05:34Putnam, perfect player for this type of course.
05:36He's been playing well as well.
05:37Very good last week.
05:38Plus 140.
05:39Ricky Fowler, Carver.
05:40I'm taking, we're switching spots.
05:43Actually, you know what?
05:44He's actually playing better though.
05:45He's a top 25 guy.
05:46Can we get top 20?
05:47And Satoshi Kodaira, plus 475.
05:51Where's my plus 775?
05:53I'm gonna do it again at a better number.
05:55Go shopping.
05:57Better go shop, Cam.
05:58It's out there, I'm telling you.
06:00It's there.
06:01We just gotta dig a little bit deeper.
06:02All right, first round leaders.
06:04Remember, only just under 80 golfers in this thing.
06:07So not a full field.
06:08Prices are not gonna be the same
06:10as what we usually get for first round leaders.
06:12Here's where I'm going.
06:13Kurt Kitayama, 28 to one.
06:14He's played well here in the past.
06:16Hoagie Sandwich, 40 to one.
06:17Ryan Crazy, like a Fox 50.
06:19This guy, Silverman, teased us last week, Cam.
06:22Teased us last week.
06:2365 to one for him.
06:24There's CT Pots and Pans with a 70.
06:27And a Todd Father as well at 70 to one.
06:30I love it.
06:31I'm going with Hossler.
06:32Carver likes him outright.
06:33Also a great starter, 38.
06:34Hoagie Sandwich, 40.
06:35Out of the gates, Brendan Todd, short course master.
06:3760 to one.
06:38Silverman.
06:39Always coming out of the gate hot.
06:4065, Charlie Hoffman, the Thursday Warrior at 66.
06:44And Kodaira.
06:44I'm all in this week, baby.
06:46131, first round leader, my friend.
06:48Kodaira, let's go.
06:51I will have to add the first round leader
06:53for Kodaira as well.
06:54If I'm gonna play him for the top 20,
06:56he's gotta get off to a little bit of a hot start.
06:58I might have to even find,
06:59maybe they got that top five first round,
07:01top 10 first round, something like that for Kodaira.
07:04Cam, let's have another big week in Japan at the Zozo.
07:08We're getting close to the end of the swing season.
07:10Let's go to the window.
07:12Cam Stewart with us on Golf Wednesday.
07:14We're back after this.
07:15And we are back from coast to coast.
07:17Here on a Wednesday, a golf Wednesday on C2C.
07:22And that means that Keith Stewart from Read the Line
07:24is with us as always to give us his preview
07:27and picks for this week's event,
07:28which is very far from us.
07:31To the far east we go for the Zozo.
07:34I think it might've been you
07:36or somebody else mentioned in this, Keith.
07:39I guess you would consider this
07:40because of the 78 no cut field,
07:43I guess sort of the signature event of the swing season.
07:46Right?
07:47I mean, that's kind of what the Zozo is
07:49as we look at this field
07:51at the Accordia-Narashino Country Club.
07:55I've seen one or the other or them both put together,
07:58however you actually wanna do it.
07:59This is where they had the Olympics, of course,
08:01a couple of years ago when Zander won the gold.
08:05So we have seen this place.
08:07Colin Morikawa is our defending champion.
08:09Good to see you as always, Keith.
08:12Mike, it's a pleasure to be with you on a golf Wednesday
08:15and we've seen this golf course before.
08:16This is the sixth edition.
08:18We did lose one over there in Japan because of the pandemic.
08:21We played that one in America.
08:23Patrick Cantley won that one.
08:24So don't look at 2020,
08:26but the other ones, Tiger, Hideki, Keegan,
08:28and of course Colin a year ago.
08:30We have the history.
08:31Let's get right into it.
08:33Tell us a little bit about the weather this week,
08:37Narashino itself, any changes from the last time we saw it?
08:40Does the weather look good?
08:41Because we talked last week about Vegas
08:43and the weather ended up playing a very big role
08:46in terms of they couldn't get out on the course
08:49Friday and Saturday morning.
08:51They had a lot of problems.
08:53I mean, everything we talked about last week came true.
08:55Even though they moved the tee times,
08:57there was a three-stroke advantage for the AM, PM guys.
09:00So the early and then the late on Friday guys,
09:02we played most of those guys and things worked out for us.
09:05If you had JT Poston, then congratulations to you.
09:08Looking ahead to this week,
09:09the weather just looks a little cool
09:11and a little damp over there in Japan.
09:13Nothing that's gonna, I think, upset the traffic flow.
09:16We're gonna have Thursday through Sunday.
09:19Now I said Saturday there by mistake
09:21because I want everyone to know that golf starts tonight.
09:24Those lineups and everything, the bets,
09:26you gotta get them in by about 7 p.m. tonight,
09:297.30 at the latest.
09:30If you wanna go pre-tournament,
09:32we have golf over in Japan
09:33and this Accordia Golf Narashino Cherry Country Club
09:37over there, I'm telling you, it is 36 holes of Target Golf.
09:41Now they use the West Coast,
09:43the West Course for this event.
09:46And one of the things that's really cool
09:47you're gonna notice, Mike, when you watch the coverage
09:50is that every hole has two greens.
09:52And the reason for that is over in Japan,
09:54it's very customary to put two greens in
09:56at these affluent country clubs
09:58because they have Bermuda grass on one
10:00and bent grass on the other.
10:01And you know how we love to pay attention to agronomy.
10:04Well, they're using 17 bent grass greens this week.
10:06So that's what we'll model for.
10:08The fourth hole, for whatever reason,
10:09they're using Bermuda grass.
10:10There must be a maintenance issue.
10:11But when you see the two greens, it's kind of cool.
10:14And it really implies a Target approach
10:16to this golf course.
10:17On approach, we've got five par threes.
10:20That's unique to the scorecard.
10:21We've got these really kind of bipolar-ish par fours.
10:25There's five of them under 425 and five over 480.
10:28It really is just a tree line, 73 bunkers,
10:31five holes with water.
10:33You gotta be a good ball striker.
10:34And look at the list of champions.
10:36It certainly proves it.
10:38All right, let's get right into it, Keith.
10:40As you mentioned, we only got a couple hours
10:41before they tee off.
10:42So get your slips in now for the Zozo.
10:46Outright, I love when we're reading the same mail.
10:48This guy's been pretty good in the swing season,
10:50Bo Hossler getting involved.
10:53I mean, Bo Hossler's got a great history here.
10:55He's T-16, T-2nd a year ago.
10:58He was runner-up to Colin Morikawa.
10:59He's had a very good fall.
11:01He's gaining over six strokes per event
11:04in the fall against the field.
11:06What more is there to say?
11:07He got blown away in the bad wave last week
11:09at the Shriners, but he didn't play bad.
11:11And he gained over seven strokes with the putter.
11:13I like that coming into this week at a place
11:15where he has very, very good history.
11:17I also love Kurt Kiniyama.
11:19I mean, is anybody hitting the ball better than this guy?
11:21He's probably the second best ball striker
11:23in the field behind Zander.
11:24In his two fall swing events, Carver, get this,
11:28Tina Green, he's gained over 12 strokes on the field,
11:31both times.
11:32Now, there's been some problems with the putter,
11:34but if you look at the past champions here,
11:36Hedecky, Keegan, not necessarily flat-stick aficionados,
11:39if you know what I mean.
11:41Further down the board, speaking of guys that can putt,
11:43how about Andrew Putnam, right?
11:44Last week, I liked him for a top 20,
11:46and he cashed for us on that placement board.
11:48Andrew has a good history here.
11:502022, he was runner-up.
11:52He leads the field in greens and regulation
11:54over the last 24 rounds.
11:56The guy's accurate on approach, and he can putt at 80-1.
12:00We're gonna have some fun with this thing.
12:02Four rounds and 78 players.
12:04I think a guy like Andrew Putnam
12:05on a positional golf course, which he's good at,
12:07like a Wyalea, he's definitely a threat in my mind,
12:11and he's playing well.
12:11And then the last guy, the G-man, Gary Woodland.
12:15First top 10 since his brain surgery, right?
12:17Last week at the Shriners, and everyone,
12:19the ball striking's there.
12:21Over his last five, he's gained over six shots,
12:23Tina Green.
12:24It's always been the putter, but guess what?
12:26Last week at the Shriners,
12:27he gains almost four strokes with the putter,
12:29and I talked to people in his camp.
12:30He's changed his practice regimen.
12:32He's using a lab putter.
12:34Still has the Odyssey Gamer for the tournaments,
12:36but he's changed some things around,
12:38and no one would, I mean, the golf gods,
12:40they gotta give us Gary Woodland at 80-1.
12:43They certainly do.
12:44It'd be great to see Gary.
12:46I'm gonna add him to the card,
12:48because I got a little feeling for it as well, Keith.
12:50I hope that he comes through.
12:50Let's get to the placements next,
12:53and look at what we have here.
12:54A Willie Z sighting in Japan this week.
12:59Hey, I know we're limited on time.
13:01Top 10, I'm going hostler.
13:02I feel good about his history here
13:04and the way he's been playing.
13:05Willie Z, last time we saw him, what?
13:0812th at the FedEx, 13th at the BMW,
13:10and then all of a sudden, you know, he disappears,
13:12but he's back.
13:13Positional golf course that needs ball striking.
13:15You know what, Willie Z?
13:17We'd love to come back there as well.
13:18The Gim Reaper, final group last week.
13:21Pushed the postman to the bitter end.
13:23I like the Gim Reaper here.
13:24Again, another place where he doesn't have
13:26to putt necessarily well.
13:27It is ball striking.
13:28It'll take over.
13:29I'm taking putting him again at top 20.
13:30Now, Carver, there's 14 guys from the Japanese golf tour
13:34in this event.
13:35I'm going with Ryosuke Kinoshita, right?
13:39Okay, runner up last week at the Japan Open.
13:42This guy, he played at Royal Troon.
13:44Since then, he's got, I mean, listen to this.
13:47He's got 7th, 17th, 6th, and 2nd there at the Japan Open.
13:51He's played good here before.
13:53He understands how to get it done over in the Zozo.
13:55Japanese player, plus 225 on a top 30.
13:59He's gotta beat half the field.
14:00And then one more name.
14:01A name that you probably remember.
14:03Ryo Ishikawa.
14:04At some point, this guy in his career,
14:06he was 29th in the world.
14:07Remember, he was like the next Tiger Woods from Japan.
14:10He was a huge star.
14:12But you know what?
14:12He's still playing over there.
14:13He's playing well.
14:14Last year in the Japan Open, he finished 2nd.
14:17He came over there to the Zozo, and then he finished 4th.
14:21Couple weeks ago at the Japan Open, finished 8th.
14:23What will he do this week?
14:24He's gonna finish in the top 30
14:26and give us three and a half to one.
14:29Certainly is.
14:30And like you said, there's a lot of things
14:31that those players from the Japan Tour can get
14:35by winning this event.
14:37Some huge things, such as Masters invites,
14:39two years, et cetera.
14:41Very, very important indeed.
14:42Head to heads.
14:44And look, we always go after someone,
14:46and I know you're happy to see Max Homa back out there.
14:49Oh, there's no doubt I'm happy to see Max Homa out there
14:53on a golf course where you really have to put
14:55the driver in play.
14:56So I'm rolling the dice, and I'm taking Johnny Vegas
14:57over Max Homa at plus money.
15:00Vegas, it's a ball striker's paradise,
15:02and he's that type of guy.
15:03He will put the ball in play consistently.
15:05Max has gotta play better than he has.
15:07He wasn't good in Montreal when I was there on property.
15:10And the second one, I'm taking JT over Minwoo Lee.
15:12Minwoo Lee's approach game was atrocious in Montreal,
15:16and it needs to be a lot better going into this event,
15:19being such a target-oriented golf course.
15:21So I'm taking JT at minus 120.
15:23I was saying earlier, Keith, to Cam,
15:25I think that JT and his wife
15:27are expecting a baby in a couple weeks,
15:29so really a last chance for him to focus in on golf.
