00:00:52I am Sam Jam Packer
00:00:54Somebody else made the claim that they have the best Celtics podcast
00:00:58They haven't even released an episode yet, so that's a poppycock claim I would say
00:01:02I'm just saying, there's a new podcast out there and they're already claiming to be the best
00:01:06I may have to discuss that topic on Tuesday night after the game with someone who's made such a claim
00:01:11But we'll see, we'll see
00:01:13That was Jay King from the Athletic
00:01:16Joined by Brian, B-Rob, Rob from MassLive.com
00:01:19Like I said, I'm Sam Jam Packer

00:02:09Excellent
00:02:11And if you want to leave a voicemail, we used to keep
00:02:13Because Jay can keep answering questions for days
00:02:15The number is 617-684-5965
00:02:19Fellas, we're going to get into some preseason predictions later
00:02:23I guess just the season is here, so predictions for the season
00:02:26I got a blind ranking again for you guys
00:02:29We're going to preview a little bit of Banner Knight and Nick's Celtics
00:02:34But first we got to talk about the big news
00:02:36The big news of all preseason
00:02:39It was not meant to be with Lonnie Walker, he got waived
00:02:42They were not willing to pay the $10 million price
00:02:45Jay, were you surprised by this deal at all?
00:02:48Or lack of deal?
00:02:50No, no, not at all
00:02:53Despite the reputation Lonnie Walker has among fans
00:03:00I'm not certain that his reputation is the same among GMs
00:03:07And front offices around the league
00:03:10That's why the Celtics were able to get him on an Exhibit 10 contract
00:03:14Which essentially amounts to a training camp invitation
00:03:17With the possibility of going to the G League
00:03:20That's why they're still, I think, optimistic
00:03:25That he will end up in Maine and not get claimed by another NBA team
00:03:30So no, I was not surprised
00:03:33But he did have a pretty solid preseason
00:03:36He has a lot of talent still at age 25
00:03:39It's just paying $11 million or $12 million for a 15th man
00:03:46Is a lot of money
00:03:48A lot of money
00:03:50It really is
00:03:51And I think that's the reason too
00:03:53You look around the league right now, Jay
00:03:55Teams, I don't think there's a ton of worry that he is going to get claimed right now
00:03:59It could happen, but a lot of teams have their rosters full
00:04:02Or they're keeping 14 guys for a reason
00:04:04Because they are close to the luxury tax
00:04:07Or they just want that extra flexibility like the Celtics do
00:04:10So yeah, I think the fact that Walker even admitted to us a few weeks ago
00:04:16Like, yeah, I could spend some time in Maine
00:04:18He knew this was probably where this was headed
00:04:21And now, if he does end up going there, that's great news for the Celtics
00:04:27Maine Celtics, get your tickets now
00:04:29That's going to be a fun team to watch this year
00:04:31And we'll see what happens down the line of Jaden Springer
00:04:34And other parts of this roster
00:04:36Maybe Lonnie Walker will be waiting there after the trade deadline
00:04:39To be a nice little mid-season addition if they go in that direction
00:04:44How does that work?
00:04:46Now that he's maybe on the Maine Celtics
00:04:49If he doesn't get signed by another team before
00:04:51We're currently Sunday night
00:04:52I think we have teams on Monday to finalize their roster
00:04:55I just don't know the mechanics of
00:04:57Now that he's, I guess, will be a Maine Celtic and not on the team
00:05:00How often do they...
00:05:02If they bring him up for an extended period, do they have to sign him?
00:05:04Is it at a lesser cost?
00:05:06What are the mechanics of using that?
00:05:08Because it's different than a two-way guy
00:05:10Yeah, so if he's on the Maine Celtics
00:05:12He's signed to a G League contract
00:05:14So he can't come up and play for...
00:05:16He's there, maybe he could practice against the Celtics
00:05:19Something like that
00:05:20He'll be fully integrated in their system
00:05:23But he can't play for the season
00:05:25Unless they actually sign him to a real deal
00:05:27So it's a matter of...
00:05:29The Celtics have his...
00:05:30And he's not eligible for a two-way contract
00:05:32He's not exactly...
00:05:33He's aged out of that
00:05:34So that's not there
00:05:35If it was a couple of years ago, he could have done that
00:05:36But he's aged out of that now
00:05:37So now it's just waiting for the Celtics or another team to say
00:05:41Hey, you've killed it in the G League for the last month or two
00:05:44We think we're ready to bring you back
00:05:46And there's going to be a lot of guys like him around the league
00:05:50In that void right now, it seems like
00:05:52Because making these rosters is covering for these fringe guys
00:05:57That are coming off rookie deals
00:05:59And don't have a desirable all-around skill set to NBA teams
00:06:04And if they signed him again from that G League contract
00:06:07It would be the veteran minimum
00:06:08And pro-rated
00:06:09And they'd still have to pay all that tax money
00:06:12I wonder what type of player he would be in the G League
00:06:17Obviously, he'd be productive
00:06:19I don't think there's any doubt about that
00:06:21But would he go in there with the same mentality
00:06:23That he took to the Boston training camp?
00:06:26Which is like, I want to work on everything that's limited me
00:06:29So far in the NBA
00:06:30That every doubt that NBA teams have about my game
00:06:33I want to work on my playmaking, my defense
00:06:35I want to be like Derek White and Drew Holiday
00:06:37Is he going to continue that mindset while he's in the G League?
00:06:40Or is he going to be like, you know what?
00:06:41Let me just go get 35
00:06:43Because I can't get 35
00:06:45I'm more talented than almost all these guys
00:06:47So let me just cook
00:06:49I don't know
00:06:50And I think the answer to that could determine
00:06:53How successful his comeback attempt is
00:06:56If he's not claimed by another team right away
00:06:58I think that's the ultimate test for him, right?
00:07:01That you just laid out, Jay
00:07:02That's it
00:07:03It's been a while since I've dropped Nick Friedman's name on the podcast
00:07:07But Nick Friedman, longtime coach in the G League
00:07:09A couple of minutes
00:07:11When I talk to him about the G League
00:07:13He's like, all those guys have the talent to be in the league
00:07:18But a lot of it is just mindset of dealing with the G League
00:07:21And dealing with, one, you're so close
00:07:25And you need to do those little things that the organization wants you to do
00:07:28But especially for a guy like Lonnie Walker
00:07:30You're going from private flights every night
00:07:33Now you're taking buses a lot of places
00:07:35And not the best accommodations
00:07:39And so I think it's definitely going to be an adjustment
00:07:42Mentality-wise, mindset-wise
00:07:44And he came in and he said all the right things
00:07:46And has very much been focused on putting the work in
00:07:48But I think you're right, Jay
00:07:49It's a big question
00:07:50As this fringe player, as a quadruple-A, as they call it
00:07:55What's your approach in the G League?
00:07:57Because that's really what's going to separate him
00:08:01And be the defining factor of whether or not he gets that next NBA opportunity
00:08:07And to follow up, Patrick, on your question about the contract stuff
00:08:11It could be like last year with Keita
00:08:13He got signed the last week of the regular season
00:08:15The last two weeks
00:08:18It's only on the roster for two weeks
00:08:20That's only $100,000 or something like that
00:08:22So that could be a situation where
00:08:24Again, if the Celtics are really tight up against the Captain
00:08:27They might wait to fill that 15th spot
00:08:29But eventually be willing to do that
00:08:31When it's not a $2 million plus all the penalties
00:08:34It's a lot easier to pay if it's just a couple hundred grand
00:08:37And then you can pay the penalties on that
00:08:39But you obviously could keep the rights to him long-term in that situation
00:08:44The people who might be paying that money at the end of the season
00:08:47We gotta talk about random new ownership rumors
00:08:50Random new ownership rumors!
00:08:52Two billionaires I've never heard of before
00:08:55Might buy the Boston Celtics
00:08:57And one of them kinda already owns the Boston Celtics
00:09:00Do you guys know anything about Hale and Bezos?
00:09:03Not the Bezos you're thinking of, though
00:09:05I got nothing besides names
00:09:09Yeah, one's a partial owner
00:09:11We don't know
00:09:13There's obviously a lot of owners of the Celtics right now
00:09:16And clearly a lot of guys that own
00:09:18Decent equity beyond just pags
00:09:22But I don't know
00:09:23The brother of Bezos
00:09:25That's a real wild card in there
00:09:27Do not need to see that name emerging again
00:09:30Within the family
00:09:31I wonder how that would
00:09:33Whether he'd try to get his brother involved
00:09:36To pay the taxes for the next couple years
00:09:38I think he's independently wealthy
00:09:41Okay, I looked at his Wikipedia page
00:09:43And I'm out already on Mark Bezos
00:09:45His description is
00:09:46Mark Bezos is an American space tourist
00:09:50That's a pretty dope thing, isn't it?
00:09:53Nah, I mean, where's he going?
00:09:55He is a space tourist, a volunteer firefighter
00:09:58And a former advertising executive
00:10:00According to Wikipedia
00:10:02That's a trifecta right there
00:10:03That's an amazing trifecta
00:10:05The man just fights fires for free
00:10:07And then
00:10:09Goes to explore space
00:10:12Just for fun
00:10:13Well, he went with Jeff, right?
00:10:15He's the Nepo sibling
00:10:17Nah, I don't want him
00:10:18I want some guy who earned his money through
00:10:20You know, regular firefighter work
00:10:22Not this volunteer stuff
00:10:24That's a ridiculous take
00:10:27I guess it's good that the Hale guy
00:10:29That currently owns the Celtics
00:10:30And maybe it would be less changed
00:10:32But I have no idea
00:10:34They're supposed to be opening up their books
00:10:35And all the financials
00:10:36And we'll probably get more random leaks
00:10:38To people who are interested in
00:10:40Purchasing the Celtics
00:10:42This rumor was in the Boston Globe
00:10:44So we gotta
00:10:46And that's what we do around here
00:10:48Gotta report any sort of breaking news
00:10:50So that's what I did
00:10:52And then we did some very cogent analysis
00:10:54If I don't say so myself
00:10:56I can't believe you
00:10:58You chastise him for being a space tourist
00:11:02Like what a sick thing to be
00:11:04We should be doing space for science
00:11:06It shouldn't be just the frills of the elite
00:11:08Of billionaires just going and dancing in space
00:11:10Why not?
00:11:12Because
00:11:14We built this country on NASA
00:11:16And scientific exploration
00:11:18And getting to the moon
00:11:20Not because it was easy, because it was hard
00:11:22JFK propelled this country
00:11:24To greatness
00:11:26And all the things we discovered
00:11:28Because of NASA
00:11:30What greatness came from that?
00:11:32It's called winning the Cold War
00:11:34JFK, where have you been for the last 30 years?
00:11:36Was that because
00:11:38They walked on the moon?
00:11:40It certainly helped
00:11:42How do you think the Ruskies felt
00:11:44When they saw our flag on the moon?
00:11:46Also space ice cream?
00:11:48That's what you eat
00:11:50When you're a space tourist
00:11:52Infrared thermometers?
00:11:54Space blankets?
00:11:56You want me to go through the 20 inventions
00:11:58We wouldn't have without space travel?
00:12:00I just think you're drastically
00:12:02Overestimating
00:12:04I do want you to do that
00:12:06I think you're drastically
00:12:08Overestimating just a rich guy
00:12:10Going into space
00:12:12It's not like he's the one doing any of the science
00:12:14He's just a super wealthy person
00:12:16LEDs? CAT scans?
00:12:18Scratch resistant lenses?
00:12:20Camera phones, Jay?
00:12:22This is all because of NASA
00:12:24Bezos hasn't done any of this
00:12:26Athletic shoes?
00:12:28Come on, buddy
00:12:30I mean, once
00:12:38Alright, folks
00:12:40Basketball season's here
00:12:42Enough for the silliness
00:12:44We're probably going to continue doing that
00:12:46We've got actual basketball coming
00:12:48Tuesday night
00:12:50Celtics vs. the Knicks
00:12:52What are we anticipating
00:12:54From this banner night?
00:12:56I was talking with B-Rob before the show, Jay
00:12:58Did you watch everything from banner night in 2009?
00:13:00Or was it, I guess, 2008?
00:13:02I was not there
00:13:04I was in college
00:13:06Yeah, but you love ball
00:13:08You must have been watching
00:13:10I'm sure I watched their game
00:13:12I don't remember who they played
00:13:14Don't remember much about it
00:13:16If anything
00:13:18I want to see what the Cavs
00:13:20Cavs would make sense
00:13:22Cavs would make sense
00:13:24Are you expecting any guests?
00:13:26Any surprise people in the audience?
00:13:28Have you seen the rings at all?
00:13:32Who gets a ring?
00:13:34What's going on on banner night?
00:13:36What are you guys hearing?
00:13:38You guys are on the beat
00:13:40I have yet to see the rings
00:13:42I've heard that there are different tiers of rings
00:13:44For different types of people
00:13:46Whether it's players
00:13:48Staffers, whoever
00:13:50I think it's going to be
00:13:52A pretty
00:13:54Gaudy ring
00:13:56Very expensive ring
00:13:58I think they're going to try to
00:14:00Establish a new standard for
00:14:02NBA rings
00:14:04Which I feel like every team tries to do that
00:14:06You just try to outdo the person who did it before you
00:14:08The rings are kind of ridiculous
00:14:10But
00:14:12Should be fun
00:14:14Should be a good night
00:14:16I think it'll be a good challenge for the Celtics
00:14:18To refocus themselves quickly
00:14:20After
00:14:22The milestone
00:14:24Of getting your ring
00:14:26And
00:14:28It's also
00:14:30It's not normal for
00:14:32Almost everybody
00:14:34Almost every player who will get a ring
00:14:36To actually be with the team still
00:14:38So it should be
00:14:40Kind of
00:14:42Not unique in that regard
00:14:44But pretty rare to have
00:14:46I think it's
00:14:4812 players back, 13 players back
00:14:50From last season's team
00:14:52Will O'Shea Brissett be in town?
00:14:54And
00:14:56Does everyone circle on their calendars
00:14:58When the Jazz come to play for the Sphe ring ceremony?
00:15:00Absolutely
00:15:02Yes
00:15:04I did talk to
00:15:06A Celtics
00:15:08PR person
00:15:10Who said there will be
00:15:12A decent amount of 08'ers in the building
00:15:14And I assume even
00:15:16Other legends that are still there
00:15:18Will be a fun part of the night
00:15:20But I'm very much looking forward to
00:15:22I throw it to you guys
00:15:24Is Joe Mazzullo going to be willing to talk about
00:15:26Ring night after the game at all?
00:15:28Or is that just going to be
00:15:32Moving forward at this point?
00:15:34I think Mazzullo's pissed off that it's happening at all
00:15:36I think he's very moved on to
00:15:38This season is different
00:15:40And I think he'll be annoyed that there's a distraction
00:15:44I don't know
00:15:46I mean
00:15:48He's unpredictable
00:15:50That's what I'm asking
00:15:52I can see it going both ways
00:15:54I can see him not wanting to
00:15:56Disrespect the ring
00:15:58And not wanting to
00:16:00Just poo-poo it
00:16:02Just because
00:16:04A lot went into those rings
00:16:06And I think he'll
00:16:08I actually think he'll be
00:16:10Gracious in that moment
00:16:12After the game about it
00:16:14But
00:16:16I think he's going to dismiss the ring as a false idol
00:16:18And something that you should not worship
00:16:20That would just be my guess
00:16:24Why is it a false idol?
00:16:26Seems to me like the only idol you should worship
00:16:28That's a good question
00:16:30I was just trying to throw out a cool
00:16:32Biblical phrase that I knew
00:16:34But I guess you're right

00:17:42I think we should focus on the basketball here
00:17:44We actually have basketball
00:17:46Seemingly one of the best threats to the Celtics
00:17:48In the Eastern Conference
00:17:50The news coming out of New York
00:17:52Is not good for their big men
00:17:54Precious Achua
00:17:56Out 2-4 weeks
00:17:58I think with a strained hamstring
00:18:00I don't know who their backup center is
00:18:02Coming into this one
00:18:04Jericho Sims I believe
00:18:06The guy who ruined the dunk contest
00:18:08I'll never forgive him for that
00:18:10I think any moment Jericho Sims is on the court
00:18:12Is a win for these Boston Celtics
00:18:14I do think it will be a good test
00:18:16The Knicks always play hard
00:18:18I feel like they played the Celtics pretty well
00:18:20How do you think the Celtics
00:18:22Are feeling going up against
00:18:24The matchup against the Knicks Jay
00:18:30I mean probably pretty good about it
00:18:32It was funny Sam Houser got asked about it the other day
00:18:34And he's like
00:18:36Yeah you know
00:18:38They're good
00:18:40I don't know what else you want me to say
00:18:42I haven't seen them play all together yet
00:18:44So
00:18:46That's kind of how I feel
00:18:48We've talked a lot about the Knicks
00:18:50But
00:18:52I just think they're ready to get going
00:18:54I think
00:18:56They're super excited
00:18:58It's just great vibes around the Celtics
00:19:00Right now
00:19:02The way that they came into camp
00:19:04The focus that they've had
00:19:06The attitude that they've had
00:19:08The willingness to
00:19:10Just kind of re-engage
00:19:12In the fight to improve
00:19:16I feel like they're just ready to get going
00:19:18And ready to play another team
00:19:20Ready to get the regular season going
00:19:22Ready to continue challenging themselves
00:19:24And I want to see them
00:19:26Especially against the Knicks
00:19:28Because the Knicks are
00:19:30One of the
00:19:32Reshaped teams
00:19:34That could help define the Eastern Conference this year
00:19:36And
00:19:38It'll be the first look at Jalen Brunson
00:19:40And Carl Towns next to each other
00:19:42Be the first look at Bridges
00:19:44And his
00:19:46The new hitch in his jump shot
00:19:48Versus Tatum
00:19:50And maybe no hitch in his jump shot
00:19:52It's going to be an epic night
00:19:54How do you think they start off on Towns?
00:19:56Do you think they give Horford to start?
00:19:58Or is it going to be a crazy Drew Holiday
00:20:00Matchup or something wacky?
00:20:04I think it's Drew Holiday
00:20:06I think they'll put Drew Holiday
00:20:08On Towns
00:20:10And then White on Brunson
00:20:12And then everyone else
00:20:14Kind of matches up
00:20:16Who does Horford guard in that scenario?
00:20:18Probably OG
00:20:20Yeah, maybe Ananobi
00:20:22But
00:20:24Yeah it is, or maybe
00:20:26Guard Brunson
00:20:28Or at least try to take that
00:20:30Like he did a bunch of times last year
00:20:32With top guards on their team
00:20:34That would be a fascinating subplot of it
00:20:36But I don't know
00:20:38If
00:20:40The Celtics are
00:20:42Rolling healthy outside of Porzingis
00:20:44Knicks, a lot of new parts
00:20:46A lot of
00:20:48Frontcourt guys down
00:20:50If you look at their bench
00:20:52They have two or three guys that have
00:20:54NBA experience off the bench
00:20:56So they'll be looking forward to Josh Hart
00:20:58Playing 48 minutes right out of the gate here
00:21:00For Tibbs
00:21:02I expect them to run
00:21:04Towns off the floor in this opener
00:21:06From a defensive perspective
00:21:08Really try to go at him
00:21:10A lot on the perimeter
00:21:12I definitely want to see Drew
00:21:14On Towns
00:21:16I want to see that
00:21:18I want to see how New York tries to
00:21:20Counter it
00:21:22There's a ton of pick and rolls with Brunson
00:21:24And Towns during the preseason
00:21:26And I think that's going to be
00:21:28Pretty much their bread and butter
00:21:30Just space the court for Brunson in a way that
00:21:32He never benefited from last season
00:21:36But the Celtics can
00:21:38As long as Holiday can handle Towns
00:21:40Which
00:21:42He probably can at least to some extent
00:21:44You can sort of blow up that pick and roll
00:21:46Because you can have Tatum
00:21:48Or Jalen
00:21:50Or whoever
00:21:52In that action too
00:21:54And that's what makes the Celtics so tough
00:21:56They don't have the same weaknesses
00:21:58Or vulnerabilities that a lot of other guys do
00:22:00Yeah and it's not like Towns
00:22:02Is the best back-to-basket player
00:22:04Like maybe if you switch
00:22:06White onto him
00:22:08They'll try to go after that mismatch
00:22:10But if you have anyone else on Brunson
00:22:12And then Drew on
00:22:14Cat you can switch all of those
00:22:16And so I do agree
00:22:18Realizing that
00:22:20Is going to be important for the Celtics
00:22:22On the other end of the court
00:22:24It's obviously
00:22:26They have a great wing defenders
00:22:28In OG and Mikael Bridges
00:22:30Brunson's always been the guy
00:22:32You kind of try to want to attack
00:22:34Also I think
00:22:36I've just used to be like
00:22:38The last basketball I actually broke down
00:22:40Was playoff basketball where it's like
00:22:42You're really trying to target one guy
00:22:44Probably Celtics are just kind of trying to get in the first game
00:22:46I don't know if they're going to be like
00:22:48Specifically slowing the pace down
00:22:50Just to hunt Jalen Brunson on the other side of the court
00:22:52I think it'll be Towns
00:22:54They hunt more often
00:22:56Just space him out
00:22:58Go by him
00:23:00Drive him
00:23:02Put him in actions
00:23:04Get him moving
00:23:06He doesn't have Gobert to cover him up anymore
00:23:08And I think
00:23:10I don't even think they'll have to
00:23:12Change their offense
00:23:14To really go out of their way to go at him
00:23:16Because what they do normally
00:23:18Will just put a lot of stress on him
00:23:20We saw a lot
00:23:22In the Toronto game
00:23:24And I know some guys weren't playing no Hauser
00:23:26No Holiday
00:23:28But I feel like we saw a lot more too big
00:23:30Than I was expecting
00:23:32A lot of Xavier Tillman at the four
00:23:34And Hamming Cornette in the game
00:23:36A decent amount
00:23:38I'm so like
00:23:40I've been so
00:23:42I don't know if the results necessarily
00:23:44Bear that out
00:23:46What do you think
00:23:48The big rotation is going to be
00:23:50How do you think they use
00:23:52Cornette feels like
00:23:54He's going to be the first big off the bench
00:23:56But I don't know
00:23:58I don't love
00:24:00And it was especially bad in the Raptors game
00:24:02Because it was a front court of
00:24:04Cornette Tillman and Walsh
00:24:06So it's not like the best spacing in the world
00:24:08But how do you see that big man rotation
00:24:10Working out and how often you think
00:24:12We're going to see them go to double bigs
00:24:14Early on in the year
00:24:16I think we'll see Tillman
00:24:18A decent amount
00:24:20Tillman at the five
00:24:22Or Tillman next to Horford and Cornette
00:24:24I think we'll probably see it
00:24:26In the second quarter
00:24:28Every game out of the gate
00:24:30Like some variation
00:24:32It worked last year
00:24:34Not every combination of double bigs worked
00:24:36But that's a look that they've had success with
00:24:38A lot going back to
00:24:40So I think
00:24:42Against the Knicks team
00:24:44And with Tillman moving the way he has now
00:24:46I think
00:24:48Against this Knicks lineup
00:24:50He's going to be able to guard
00:24:52OG on the perimeter
00:24:54He's probably going to be able to do okay
00:24:56Against a Josh Hart
00:24:58I assume the Knicks are going to be playing
00:25:00Plenty small because they just don't have
00:25:02Bigs outside of town
00:25:04That they can count on
00:25:06But yeah, I think that's a look you're going to get
00:25:08I don't
00:25:10But it is
00:25:12Does Jordan Walsh get thrown in the fire here?
00:25:14For this matchup
00:25:16You can make the case for that as well
00:25:18But I would assume that Tillman is going to get the first crack
00:25:20At those wild card mids
00:25:22As the ninth guy off the bench
00:25:24Just in short spurts
00:25:26And maybe over Cornette at times at center
00:25:28If Cornette's game
00:25:30Being played off the floor on the perimeter
00:25:32I'm interested to see
00:25:34I'm interested to see what Joe does
00:25:36With the rotation
00:25:38And I would guess
00:25:40There's definitely some Jordan Walsh
00:25:44At least to reward him
00:25:46For the preseason that he had
00:25:48Joe seemed pretty excited about the approach
00:25:50Walsh took throughout preseason
00:25:52The double big thing
00:25:54Will be interesting because
00:25:56Yes, it has been
00:25:58A good recipe
00:26:00For the Celtics
00:26:02But the guys, the three bigs
00:26:04That they're going to use
00:26:06I don't know how well they fit next to each other
00:26:08Horford and Kristaps
00:26:10As double bigs are so wildly different
00:26:12Than any of the other two guys
00:26:14On the court
00:26:16Cornette and
00:26:18Horford played
00:26:20245 minutes last year
00:26:22Not a lot over the course of an 82 game season
00:26:24The Celtics defensive rating
00:26:26Was 118
00:26:28It was basically the only duo
00:26:30That they got diced with
00:26:32They still outscored opponents by 5.6 points
00:26:34Per 100 possessions in those minutes
00:26:36But
00:26:38That's
00:26:40That's not necessarily the look
00:26:42You want, especially defensively
00:26:44If you go to Tillman at four
00:26:46Next to
00:26:48Cornette especially, you could be
00:26:50Limited with
00:26:52You could be severely
00:26:54Limited offensively
00:26:56Especially against teams that can really
00:26:58You know
00:27:00Go after you a little bit
00:27:02I mean teams are just going to abandon Tillman in the corner
00:27:04In any of that
00:27:06There's some moments in the Raptors
00:27:08And he'll make them pay
00:27:10The Brian Robb stamp of approval
00:27:12In Xavier Tillman's three point shot
00:27:14I'm not there yet
00:27:16I don't, I think teams will
00:27:18Welcome any Xavier Tillman
00:27:20Corner three
00:27:22At this point
00:27:24While we're on the Tillman corner three
00:27:26Funny, he was practicing the other day
00:27:28And kind of working on like
00:27:30Game shots
00:27:32Which for him is sometimes going to mean like
00:27:34Stand in the corner and just wait
00:27:36For everything else to go on
00:27:38And so Sam Cassell was working with him
00:27:40And Cassell was pretending to be
00:27:42Jalen Brown
00:27:44And or Jason Tatum
00:27:46And he was like pump faking
00:27:48He was like trying to get his in the middle of the lane
00:27:50While Tillman just sat in the corner
00:27:52Waiting for the pass
00:27:54And he was trying to throw him off rhythm
00:27:56And it was pretty funny because
00:27:58He's like this is what Jalen and Jason
00:28:00Are going to do
00:28:02And he was just going through like a progression
00:28:04Of fakes
00:28:06And just trying to go get a bucket
00:28:08While Tillman just waited there
00:28:10Waiting for his rep
00:28:12It was pretty funny stuff
00:28:14But also kind of shines a light
00:28:16Into the work that he's doing
00:28:18Which is you know
00:28:20You are going to have to stay on rhythm
00:28:22And not necessarily
00:28:24In the flow
00:28:26You have to be able to sit there and wait
00:28:28Catch and fire
00:28:30And he's been working on that
00:28:32He definitely has a willingness to shoot
00:28:34That he's displayed in the preseason
00:28:36And I feel like his minutes going on
00:28:38Throughout the season
00:28:40Is going to be directly correlated to
00:28:42How well he's able to knock down those open threes
00:28:44Because I do think teams are going to leave him wide open
00:28:46And you just get
00:28:48If I'm Joe Mazzuolo I'm so much more comfortable
00:28:50If he's knocking down corner threes
00:28:52At like a 40% clip
00:28:54It's not a gimme shot
00:28:56Teams have to at least take a step towards him
00:28:58Rather than just welcoming that shot
00:29:00If he becomes Aaron Bain
00:29:02If he becomes Aaron Bain
00:29:04Then that would be game over
00:29:06Who do you guys trust more
00:29:08Walsh or Tillman at this point
00:29:10Who's three?
00:29:12I trust Walsh but it's because
00:29:14He can do stuff beyond
00:29:16He can also catch the ball on the perimeter
00:29:18And do something
00:29:20That's based on five preseason games
00:29:22Of him having some sort of
00:29:24Off the dribble game or slashing to the rim
00:29:26But he's much more of an offensive threat
00:29:28Than Tillman is
00:29:30And so I feel like he's
00:29:32You can't just leave him wide open
00:29:34Just because he can do more with the ball
00:29:36In terms of shot for shot
00:29:38I don't know I'm going to leave that to the ball expert
00:29:40Jay
00:29:42Who's got a better shot at this point
00:29:44I would
00:29:46I would trust Walsh more
00:29:48Just because
00:29:50His track record of being bad
00:29:52Isn't as long
00:29:54I'm bringing out the Summerlink tape
00:29:56Tillman has been
00:29:58Less than 30%
00:30:00Every year since he was a rookie
00:30:02But he made that one in the finals
00:30:04He made that one in the finals
00:30:06He made a huge one in the finals
00:30:08This is true
00:30:10He was 3 for 3 in Abu Dhabi one time
00:30:12Jordan Walsh is 20 years old
00:30:14And
00:30:16I think it's easier to
00:30:18Improve when you're that age
00:30:20Not saying you can't improve
00:30:22I'm not dismissing the
00:30:24Kaizen attitude
00:30:26But I just
00:30:28No matter what happened in preseason
00:30:30It's going to take a larger sample size for me to believe
00:30:32In the power of Xavier Tillman's jump shot
00:30:34I hope they play both to be honest
00:30:36Like you said
00:30:38They both played great enough in the preseason
00:30:40To get their shots
00:30:42If you're playing 10 guys
00:30:44And you're Joe Mazzullo
00:30:46Even if it's just stints in the second quarter
00:30:48That obviously helps keep the Al minutes down
00:30:50But then you can keep Drew down
00:30:52Below 30 minutes too if you want
00:30:54If you're going to give Walsh 6 minutes there
00:30:56And play 5-10 minutes
00:30:58Of Tillman at the 4 every night
00:31:00How low do you think
00:31:02They'll have Drew's minutes?
00:31:06I think right around 30
00:31:08They're going to have Al's minutes
00:31:10Al played one game in the preseason
00:31:12I don't want to
00:31:14Be negative Nancy here
00:31:16But he didn't look
00:31:18The most spry out there
00:31:20Rusty
00:31:22Is he going to be
00:31:24They kind of need him not to be rusty
00:31:26Playing against the Knicks on Tuesday night
00:31:28Tillman and Cornette
00:31:30Can take care of it
00:31:32I believe in Luke Cornette as much as the next fella
00:31:34But I think the stretching
00:31:36It's a revenge game for Cornette
00:31:38Is it revenge?
00:31:40Did he leave New York on negative terms?
00:31:44It's only a revenge game if he has a big game
00:31:46I guess
00:31:48That's how I understand Luke Cornette
00:31:50Is to be circling games on the calendars
00:31:52To vanquish past foes
00:31:54Just because he's a really vengeful guy
00:31:56Basketball is back

00:33:20Bold predictions for the game
00:33:22Anything
00:33:24Two Tillman three pointers
00:33:26Wow
00:33:28He's putting all the chips in
00:33:30I think
00:33:32Peyton Pritchard is going to have 18 points
00:33:34On six threes
00:33:36Jason Tatum is going to have 40
00:33:40That would be a tough 42 against those
00:33:42Defenders
00:33:44Yeah against those defenders
00:33:46That would be impressive
00:33:48Well since we're so good at predicting things
00:33:50Let's get into more predictions for the season
00:33:52Do you want to start off with the
00:33:54Wackier ones or the more
00:33:56Basic consistent ones
00:33:58I'm loving the Tillman
00:34:00Fire you're bringing
00:34:02I say mix it up
00:34:04One serious and then
00:34:06One wacky
00:34:08A little iPod shuffle here
00:34:10How many wins will the Celtics have
00:34:12This year
00:34:1467
00:34:16Woo
00:34:1867
00:34:20You've gone through the whole schedule
00:34:22Win loss win loss and you guys tallied those up
00:34:24Because I did that and I'm only at 62
00:34:28How many games you got
00:34:30Playing
00:34:32Jay and I talked about this and I
00:34:34Threw out a 35 as the over under
00:34:36I think it's going to be like I
00:34:38Because he's not going to be playing back to back
00:34:40He's on the Joel Embiid schedule
00:34:42I think it'd be I'd be surprised if he plays
00:34:44Over 40 games or like I think he's going to
00:34:46Be playing in less than half the games
00:34:4867 is
00:34:50Definitely a hotter take
00:34:52But I just think
00:34:54They're going to be so far ahead of
00:34:56People to start the season
00:34:58Even without Porzingis
00:35:00They were 31 and 6 without Porzingis
00:35:02Last year they absolutely dusted everyone
00:35:04Without Porzingis they have
00:35:06Everybody back that matters
00:35:08They had other than Porzingis
00:35:10A healthy preseason
00:35:12They're not like
00:35:14Acclimating themselves to a new
00:35:16Edition they're not learning anything
00:35:18New Peyton Pritchard and Sam
00:35:20Hauser look great like
00:35:22There's just so much reason to
00:35:24Think that the Celtics are going to
00:35:26Come out and play great
00:35:28Basketball from the start
00:35:30They don't need Lonnie Walker
00:35:32I mean this is
00:35:34No but it is like
00:35:36The fact that we're the nitpicking for us is
00:35:38Like ah like Tillman or
00:35:40Jordan Walsh like who should play more because they
00:35:42Both deserve to play like that's that's
00:35:44The sort of problems they had from the preseason which
00:35:46Is very much to say
00:35:48Everything's been right and then you look
00:35:50Around the rest of the Eastern Conference
00:35:52Either injuries or new pieces
00:35:54Having to be worked in together
00:35:56From almost every contender right now
00:35:58And now you look at even like a team like
00:36:00The Thunder where guys are dropping left and right
00:36:02There if these guys can stay healthy I think
00:36:04Jay's number doesn't look as crazy as
00:36:06It might feel out of the gate
00:36:08I just think the East is a little bit better
00:36:10Like it feels like they have more
00:36:12Top level teams
00:36:14I would say two through seven
00:36:16I don't think the Celtics
00:36:18Are going to win the conference by
00:36:2014 games this year
00:36:24Maybe they'll win 67 games and there'll be
00:36:26Other 60 win teams
00:36:28I just think it'll be a little bit closer
00:36:30To the pack
00:36:32But you know I think
00:36:34It's not like I'm really being a Debbie
00:36:36Down here predicting they're going to win 62 games
00:36:38That's still a very very good basketball team
00:36:40The way they played last year
00:36:4264 wins
00:36:44Felt like it was almost their
00:36:46Like that was their
00:36:48Floor
00:36:50So you're predicting 72 wins
00:36:52I'm not
00:36:54What's the most amount of wins you think they can get
00:36:56This year
00:36:58They didn't
00:37:00Go out of their way to try to win games
00:37:02Like they sat players they rested players
00:37:04They limited minutes for guys
00:37:06They never went crazy
00:37:08With like loading up Al Horford's
00:37:10Playing time or
00:37:12Loading up Jason Tatum with a
00:37:14Crazy month which Joe Mazzulla
00:37:16Did the previous year when he was a rookie coach
00:37:18They
00:37:20Like they just were so much
00:37:22Better than everybody last year that they won
00:37:2462 games
00:37:2664 games rather well like
00:37:28Pacing themselves and so
00:37:32Injury looks the one thing I'll throw in
00:37:34For that but yeah at the same time
00:37:36Especially if like Tatum or Brown
00:37:38Down for a significant period of
00:37:40Time or you could throw Derek White into
00:37:42That or even the bench guys
00:37:44But the problem that
00:37:46Jordan Walsh's of the world in the rotation
00:37:48Regularly that's when the drop
00:37:50Off could come and that's when the
00:37:52Wins could diminish
00:37:54But injury like applies less to this group
00:37:56I feel like because Tatum
00:37:58White Pritchard
00:38:00Those are like Ironman as far
00:38:02As their durability goes so
00:38:04Like Jalen's had some injuries over
00:38:06The years nothing like too crazy
00:38:08Serious Drew's the big one
00:38:10I think as far as who else you're worried about
00:38:12Beyond Al's just age
00:38:14But yeah by
00:38:16And by and large there I feel like
00:38:18You don't worry about injuries
00:38:20Of guys like that and that's like half their rotation
00:38:22Right there so that kind of puts you ahead of other
00:38:24Teams where you know other guys are just
00:38:26Prone to it. B-Rob just jinxed it
00:38:28I
00:38:30Derek White tore an ACL
00:38:32You don't have to say a specific guy
00:38:34A specific injury B-Rob
00:38:36There's no chance there's zero
00:38:38I will
00:38:40It's not going to happen
00:38:42It's not going to happen
00:38:44He's not poking a voodoo doll
00:38:46Right now
00:38:48Come on
00:38:50I have my next answer for my next
00:38:52Question my next prediction is going to be
00:38:54Biggest villain and it's going to be
00:38:56B-Rob because he jinxed the team
00:38:58Shut up
00:39:00Biggest villain
00:39:02It could be a guy on the Celtics who's a villain
00:39:04And tearing the team down from then
00:39:06Or one of their
00:39:08Opponents who do you think is the biggest
00:39:10Villain of this upcoming season
00:39:12Will be Mo
00:39:14Wagner
00:39:16That's the easy answer
00:39:18Mo Wagner is always
00:39:20Getting into it
00:39:22With somebody and I actually think
00:39:24The magic
00:39:26Have a chance
00:39:28To be really good I'm probably
00:39:30Higher on the magic than Mo they added KCP
00:39:32Boncaro
00:39:34And Wagner brought them
00:39:36To the five seed last year
00:39:38While not being able to
00:39:40Shoot at all like they were just so physical
00:39:42And so rugged
00:39:44Defensively and so versatile
00:39:46That they were able to get the five seed
00:39:48Without being
00:39:50Even remotely
00:39:52Good shooters if they do
00:39:54Take a step forward they could be
00:39:56Really really tough and
00:39:58Mo Wagner is in intense games
00:40:00Mo Wagner is going to be a villain
00:40:02That's just how it goes
00:40:04Mo Wagner is the most annoying
00:40:06Opponent
00:40:08In the league I don't know if it's even
00:40:10Close
00:40:12Mo is in a league of his own he's a legend
00:40:14And I say that with all respect
00:40:16Yeah
00:40:18Mo is just the most
00:40:20Irritating force out there
00:40:22I love that guy
00:40:24I've got an upcomer that might
00:40:26Challenge Mo on that front
00:40:28Um
00:40:30Because if someone was getting hurt in the Celtics this would be the guy to do it
00:40:32Aaron Neesmith
00:40:34Oh wow
00:40:36Aaron Neesmith is a man who
00:40:38Is a battering ram
00:40:40Did B-Rock just call that Neesmith is going to injure
00:40:42It almost happened last year I feel like there was a couple close calls
00:40:44In those Pacer games
00:40:46Like in the regular season
00:40:48But no he plays hard
00:40:50Um he's obviously got a chip on his shoulder
00:40:52Against this team and now you have the rivalry
00:40:54Of what happened in the playoffs now
00:40:56I think those are going to be some
00:40:58Some heated matchups
00:41:00I'm battling for a loose ball on the court
00:41:02I don't know anything goes at this point
00:41:04But
00:41:06Look out for Neesmith
00:41:08As far as you know
00:41:10Some fisticuffs
00:41:12Those are two pretty good picks from two teams that are pretty solid
00:41:14Um
00:41:16My first thought was just Luca
00:41:18Because just the people on Celtics twitter
00:41:20Seem to love to hate Mavericks twitter
00:41:22Right now and so
00:41:24They don't really play often enough for there to be a true villainy
00:41:26Like I feel like you do need to have a
00:41:28Villain come from an eastern conference
00:41:30Maybe a division opponent
00:41:32And
00:41:34Without any real rhyme or reason and don't ask me to explain this
00:41:36It's going to be Kelly Oubre Jr.
00:41:38Um
00:41:40I have another nominee
00:41:42For when you're done
00:41:44That's all I got
00:41:46Take a pick
00:41:48Joel Embiid
00:41:50Yeah Joel Embiid
00:41:52If he plays
00:41:54Do they play him on a back to back
00:41:56They haven't played Embiid in the playoffs in a while
00:41:58Two years
00:42:00But
00:42:02If they play a series against Joel
00:42:04And if the 76ers are competitive
00:42:06Then his combination
00:42:08Of being really
00:42:10Good at basketball and also
00:42:12A gifted troll
00:42:14Would
00:42:16Infuriate people
00:42:18And I think
00:42:20They're probably the best roster
00:42:22That he's had in his career
00:42:24He definitely has
00:42:26Like in Maxi
00:42:28And Paul George that is a
00:42:30Legitimate big three
00:42:32And
00:42:34I believe
00:42:36Embiid will get under people's skin
00:42:38If this all expands
00:42:40Especially if he is in great shape like he says he is
00:42:42And he has dropped all his weight and he is
00:42:44Like just
00:42:46Able to kind of shed
00:42:48Some of his playoff demons
00:42:50And it's a close series
00:42:52People are going to hate Joel Embiid
00:42:54And he's doing
00:42:56The DX chop
00:42:58It's wild that he just gets away with that
00:43:00We were not allowed to do that
00:43:02In school because it was so offensive
00:43:04See I was a bad boy
00:43:06And I used to do it no matter what
00:43:08That's so on the nose
00:43:14The bad boy of
00:43:16Williams Middle School
00:43:18You ever get like suspended
00:43:20For doing too much DX chopping
00:43:22Or people are just like there goes the kid
00:43:24I don't remember
00:43:28Specifically getting like
00:43:30Detention or anything like that
00:43:32Because I was doing
00:43:34The suck it sign
00:43:36But I can't imagine
00:43:38That teachers were thrilled
00:43:40About it and I used to do it a lot
00:43:42Were you like doing it as like a
00:43:44Mr. Johnson that algebra test
00:43:46Sucks
00:43:48I think I was pretty
00:43:50Pretty liberal
00:43:52I didn't discriminate
00:43:54Everyone was getting it
00:43:58Alright who do you think is going to be the most
00:44:00Frustrating player on the Celtics
00:44:02The Celtics player that fans will be
00:44:04Most annoyed with
00:44:08This is a good one because there's not a lot
00:44:10To pick from here
00:44:12They're pretty beloved at this point
00:44:14And this is just based on the
00:44:16Like James Springer
00:44:18On offense
00:44:20I hope they don't tweet at all about James Springer
00:44:22James Springer should hopefully not play
00:44:24But that's the thing
00:44:26I don't know if he's going to be on the floor
00:44:28Enough for him to even reach that level
00:44:30But that's all I got for that
00:44:32It's going to be Slim Pickens
00:44:34Maybe Cornette
00:44:36It's going to be Tillman
00:44:38It's going to be Tillman because
00:44:40His lack of
00:44:42Offensive punch
00:44:44Is just glaring sometimes
00:44:46And especially if he does play in these
00:44:48Big duos
00:44:50Next to Al Horford or Luke Cornette
00:44:52I think the Celtics
00:44:54Going to just look a bit clunkier than they normally do
00:44:56When Tillman is in those lineups
00:44:58And he'll get the blame
00:45:00Just because
00:45:02He's not the most dynamic force
00:45:04Offensively
00:45:06I don't think he'll deserve it
00:45:08I think he'll be great defensively
00:45:10He'll have a solid impact
00:45:12When he's on the court
00:45:14But just because of the way
00:45:16His game is
00:45:18He's not a good finisher
00:45:20He's not a great shooter
00:45:22There's just a lot of obvious stuff
00:45:24A lot of obvious shortcomings
00:45:26Offensively
00:45:28I think people are going to get annoyed with him sometimes
00:45:30I think it's going to be
00:45:32It's going to be Drew Holiday
00:45:34That guy does some of the craziest shit in the world
00:45:36During games
00:45:38And that's my only justification
00:45:40I think people are going to get annoyed with him
00:45:42Because he will take a three in transition
00:45:44That he had no business taking
00:45:46Or throw a lob that doesn't make any sense
00:45:48And I'm scraping the bottom of the barrel here
00:45:50Looking for someone
00:45:52It's tough to be frustrated with a championship team
00:45:54Trying to come back to another championship
00:45:56And so
00:45:58I wish I had that question back
00:46:00It wasn't the best question
00:46:02Hand up, that's on me
00:46:04It worked
00:46:06It produced some okay conversation
00:46:08I believe Chris Tapps won this award last year
00:46:10But he's not going to be playing that many games
00:46:12I'm going to go with the obvious one
00:46:14I think is just Jason Tatum
00:46:16Complaining about or throwing his hands up
00:46:18And being a little bit demonstrative
00:46:20As leading the team in techs
00:46:22I feel like Tatum
00:46:24Sort of distanced himself from
00:46:26Exploding at refs
00:46:28A bit last year
00:46:30He stopped
00:46:32Dwelling on missed calls the way he had
00:46:34Previously
00:46:36He's still going to win it
00:46:38I don't think there's
00:46:40I don't think there's any doubt
00:46:42It will not be Derek White
00:46:44It certainly will not be Drew Holiday
00:46:46Jalen Brown almost never talks to
00:46:48Referees like that
00:46:50See, I
00:46:52Feel like he has
00:46:54A wild card
00:46:56I don't know, you're right, he generally is not going to be
00:46:58Talking to nearly as much as Tatum
00:47:00But I feel like
00:47:02He's going to come in with more confidence
00:47:04I think you're right
00:47:06I looked it up
00:47:08I think he's a sneaker
00:47:10Tatum had 14 last year, Chris Taps
00:47:12Only had 10
00:47:14And Jalen Brown had 10, so he tied up
00:47:16Chris Taps came out of the gate
00:47:18And was getting technicals every left and right
00:47:20In his first couple games
00:47:22Jalen had 10?
00:47:24Give me Jalen, I feel even better about this now
00:47:26Angry Jalen, pissed off Jalen
00:47:28Anytime he sees a ref
00:47:30Wearing a Nike he's going to be pissed off
00:47:32It's funny, I was like
00:47:34Tatum really took a step back
00:47:36He didn't go after the refs as much
00:47:38And he almost got enough technicals
00:47:40What is the suspension, 16?
00:47:42I think it's 16 or 17
00:47:46Luka Doncic led the league last year with 19
00:47:50So good for him
00:47:52Speaking of, players like Luka Doncic
00:47:54More traditional prediction, do you guys have
00:47:56MVP picks?
00:47:58I'm going Jokic
00:48:00Just because
00:48:02That team is going to need him more than ever
00:48:04And
00:48:06The one thing
00:48:08That might go against them is
00:48:10If they fall to the middle of the pack
00:48:12In the West playoff picture, I think that hurts them
00:48:14But
00:48:16He's going to
00:48:18Be putting up close to a triple-double overnight
00:48:20And that's just, numbers-wise
00:48:22It's going to look a lot better than
00:48:24Most of the rest of the MVP pack
00:48:26I don't know if he gets the narrative thing
00:48:28I feel like he put up those numbers last year
00:48:30And people were just like
00:48:32We're not going to give him a third MVP
00:48:34Like all the advanced stats
00:48:36He was clearly the best
00:48:38I guess he did win it last year
00:48:40So maybe they'll just do that again
00:48:42It feels like
00:48:44If the Mavericks finish in the top three
00:48:46Of the Western Conference
00:48:48It will be Luka
00:48:50But my pick, I think they're just going to give it to Shea
00:48:52I think the Thunder are going to be good
00:48:54And people love Shea
00:48:56And even though he has a wildly talented cast around him
00:48:58They're a bunch of young up-and-comers
00:49:00So Shea gets all the credit
00:49:02Whereas a guy like Tatum gets
00:49:04Knocked down for having
00:49:06Great players around him
00:49:08Shea has a much higher usage rate on a team
00:49:10That should be the best team in the Western Conference
00:49:12And people like a new person
00:49:14So I'm going with Shea
00:49:16I actually think Shea's numbers
00:49:18Like counting numbers
00:49:20Might come down a little bit
00:49:22Just because he has better guys around him?
00:49:24First of all, they added
00:49:26A couple pieces that are significant
00:49:28But then
00:49:30You have Chet Holmgren
00:49:32Who's only going to grow
00:49:34I don't think his role from last season is going to be his role forever
00:49:36And then Jalen Williams
00:49:38Is also ascending
00:49:40So you have a mix
00:49:42Right now where I think
00:49:44Shea
00:49:46The opportunities that he's continued to
00:49:48Increase
00:49:50Are going to start shrinking
00:49:52Maybe that doesn't come this year
00:49:54But it's Luka to me
00:49:56They're going to need him to do so much
00:49:58They're going to have
00:50:00Like they don't have
00:50:02Outside of him and Kyrie Irving
00:50:04Very many
00:50:06Offensive generators
00:50:08And he's going to have insane stats
00:50:10If he can do that
00:50:12While also playing a little more defense
00:50:14And winning some games
00:50:16And I think Luka's
00:50:18Going to be tough, tough, tough to beat
00:50:20Is his
00:50:22Playoffs last year, his finals last year
00:50:24Is that going to hurt him at all?
00:50:26In terms of how the narrative
00:50:28I don't think it will
00:50:30Because
00:50:32Yes he was bad
00:50:34But the Celtics were just like so dominant
00:50:36Throughout the run
00:50:38That I don't think it's a stain on him
00:50:40That he didn't play great against them
00:50:42I think the
00:50:44Defensive highlights that I've seen on Twitter
00:50:46Is kind of a stain on him
00:50:48To be an
00:50:50MVP
00:50:52You can't do that bad defensively
00:50:54And just not put in that effort
00:50:56Agreed the way the series went
00:50:58The Celtics attacking him
00:51:00It showed how he needs to get better
00:51:02But I don't think
00:51:04People will hold it against him the same way
00:51:08That they would another series
00:51:10Just because of how lopsided
00:51:12The matchup was
00:51:14And part of that was
00:51:16Again because it wasn't good enough defensively
00:51:18I just feel like maybe I'm wrong
00:51:20It won't be held against him
00:51:22He also has the narrative
00:51:24Oh he came back after that finals loss
00:51:26And he's in better shape now
00:51:28And he's a better defender now
00:51:30Wow look at them winning all these games
00:51:32That's why I think it's dependent on how much
00:51:34The Mavericks have team success
00:51:36Because Luka led the league in scoring last year
00:51:38But they were the fifth seed
00:51:40I think if he gets them a top
00:51:42Three or four seed in the top half of that bracket
00:51:44And leads the league in scoring
00:51:46It will go to Luka
00:51:48But I do think it's going to be dependent on
00:51:50Has he led the Mavericks
00:51:52To be one of the elite teams
00:51:54In the playoffs
00:51:56Because the Mavericks were not thought of
00:51:58As much of a threat in the Western Conference
00:52:00Basically until the conference finals
00:52:02Last year
00:52:04My super dark horse is
00:52:06Zion
00:52:08Wow
00:52:10He played 72 games last year
00:52:12Doesn't matter
00:52:14Doesn't matter what he's done in the past
00:52:16I just feel like if that dude
00:52:18Just takes everything seriously
00:52:20And is at top level for a full season
00:52:22Maybe that's impossible
00:52:24Maybe it'll never happen
00:52:26Maybe we'll never see that type of Zion
00:52:28But if he does
00:52:30That is one of the three to five
00:52:32Most dominant players in the league
00:52:34You know who can elevate him too
00:52:36Tice
00:52:38Tice playing alongside you
00:52:40Setting those screens
00:52:42Playing defense
00:52:44All MVPs in need of Daniel Tice in their camp
00:52:46That is a good one though
00:52:48If there's anyone who should be motivated as hell for this year
00:52:50Just based off where he's been
00:52:52If the preseason reports
00:52:54About what he's been
00:52:56How he's looking
00:52:58And just his mindset are there
00:53:00Then yeah
00:53:02That's one that would certainly
00:53:04Win the narrative card on that front
00:53:06I don't know
00:53:08If they're going to necessarily have the team success
00:53:10Could Yannis?
00:53:12I mean obviously
00:53:14He could
00:53:16Yannis could
00:53:18Yannis could do anything
00:53:20Especially because now they have
00:53:22Thanasis back
00:53:24Wild move
00:53:26Has that officially gone through
00:53:28Or is that just a rumor that got put out there
00:53:30I don't think that's gone through
00:53:32I think that's insane
00:53:34He injured Thanasis Antetokounmpo
00:53:36Just make him assistant
00:53:38He can hang out still
00:53:40You don't have to waste a roster spot on him
00:53:42He can be a player development coach
00:53:44But he's injured
00:53:46He tore his ACL
00:53:48He's not going to be on the team
00:53:50It's wild to me to give him a roster spot
00:53:52And cut another guy
00:53:54But
00:53:56Do you think he's been on the roster
00:53:58Because of what he did on the court before
00:54:00He's been
00:54:02Hypothetically
00:54:04He could get on the court
00:54:06There were times where I've seen him play basketball
00:54:08If he's injured and just collecting paychecks
00:54:10He should be a player development coach
00:54:14A Nick Friedman
00:54:16Nick Friedman's the assistant coach
00:54:18Of the Capital City Go-Go
00:54:20But a younger Nick Friedman
00:54:22Correct
00:54:24Two more
00:54:26What do you guys think is going to be
00:54:28The go-to
00:54:30Oklahoma-Zula cliche this year
00:54:32I feel like last year
00:54:34It's defining success in a different way
00:54:38You guys have been to a lot of his scrums
00:54:40Early in the preseason
00:54:42They're all the same
00:54:44There is no difference
00:54:46He's not going to bring out a different animal
00:54:48It's going to be humility
00:54:50I think open-mindedness
00:54:52Is his focus for now
00:54:54That is his number one focus
00:54:56Is open-mindedness
00:54:58We need to be
00:55:00Willing to adapt
00:55:02We need to know that
00:55:04The way we won a championship last year
00:55:06Might not be the way we win a championship again
00:55:08We need to be open-minded
00:55:10It's going to be open-mindedness
00:55:12That's the leader in the clubhouse
00:55:14I think it's going to be
00:55:16This year is different from last year
00:55:18We haven't done anything yet
00:55:20This is a new season
00:55:22There's going to be a lot of questions
00:55:24A lot of you reporters are going to frame it
00:55:26He's going to cut off a lot of questions
00:55:28Anytime a reporter mentions last year
00:55:30He's immediately like
00:55:32This is a new year
00:55:34I think that's going to be his main argument
00:55:36Going into this year
00:55:38Are you open-minded to the possibility
00:55:40You're wrong?
00:55:42K?
00:55:44Are you open-minded to the possibility
00:55:46You're wrong?
00:55:48Always. I'm frequently wrong
00:55:50It's true
00:55:52B-Rod, your thoughts
00:55:54Am I frequently wrong or not?
00:55:56Yes
00:56:00Going the animal route
00:56:02I think we're going to get
00:56:04A seal is going to be involved
00:56:06I don't know if you've heard about a seal
00:56:08You've heard of the whales
00:56:10I think a seal is going to be involved
00:56:12I'm just trying to think about what
00:56:14But seals get hunted by sharks
00:56:16Don't they? I feel like seal
00:56:18Might not
00:56:20Don't be a seal
00:56:22The animal kingdom down to the insect world
00:56:24Or different viruses
00:56:26There's got to be a new thing
00:56:28That he gets obsessed with
00:56:30That he can use as a metaphor
00:56:32For talking about the Celtics
00:56:34Amoeba
00:56:36Constantly switching positions
00:56:38And taking down their opponents
00:56:40Or something like that
00:56:44Finals prediction
00:56:46Don't you feel like we're a long way
00:56:48From Sandcastles?
00:56:50We are
00:56:52Please never apologize for getting back to Sandcastles
00:56:56Remind the folks what the Sandcastles were
00:56:58In case there's some listeners that aren't familiar
00:57:00Was that two years ago or one year ago?
00:57:02That was two years ago
00:57:04One of James' finest works
00:57:06Sandcastles
00:57:08And building a new
00:57:10Sandcastle every day
00:57:12The ocean's going to come and wash it away
00:57:14But you're going to put in that goddamn
00:57:16Fucking work and build a new Sandcastle
00:57:18Is the Sandcastle kind of back in
00:57:20On theme now?
00:57:22Be open-minded?
00:57:24The old Sandcastle was wiped away
00:57:26Got to build a new one
00:57:28Got to start it all over again
00:57:30You should remind him of that at practice tomorrow
00:57:32How's the new Sandcastle he built?
00:57:34I'm sure he would be thrilled
00:57:38Finals prediction, Jay
00:57:40Celtics
00:57:42Over the Thunder
00:57:44Go in shock
00:57:46In six
00:57:48I honestly
00:57:50I don't think
00:57:52There's a team in the east in Boston's class
00:57:54I don't think there's a team in the west
00:57:56In Oklahoma City's class
00:57:58I'm open to the idea that
00:58:00Oklahoma City will still need to
00:58:02Take its lumps in the playoffs
00:58:04And
00:58:06Will still need to learn how to win
00:58:08Against a team like Dallas which has Luca
00:58:10Or
00:58:12Even maybe a team like Minnesota
00:58:14Which plays such great defense
00:58:16And is physical
00:58:18But
00:58:20Right now I think those are the two best teams
00:58:22And
00:58:24By far the most complete teams
00:58:26And I think
00:58:28They're going to be on a collision course to meet in the finals
00:58:32D-Rob
00:58:34Celtics Thunder
00:58:36Was my pick going into the preseason
00:58:38All these injuries that I've hit the Thunder
00:58:40Are giving me a little bit of pause here
00:58:42I'm going to go Wolves
00:58:44Celtics over Wolves
00:58:46I kind of just like this deal for the Wolves
00:58:48I like DiVincenzo on their roster
00:58:50Randall
00:58:52Either figured it out with them
00:58:54Or they trade him for some other good stuff
00:58:56And
00:58:58Thunder are going to be right there
00:59:00But
00:59:02I think Celtics take care of either of those teams
00:59:04And soon get healthy without a problem
00:59:06I was going to go Wolves
00:59:08But now I'm going to pivot because
00:59:10It's going to be different
00:59:12Celtics over Grizzlies
00:59:14Oh
00:59:16Zach Eady
00:59:18Is going to be a star
00:59:20John Morant coming back
00:59:22Full season of Marcus Smart
00:59:24Hopefully Triple J can be
00:59:26Every time the Grizzlies have been healthy
00:59:28They've won over 50 games
00:59:30They've been a contender for the top seed in the West
00:59:32And so
00:59:34Mostly because you guys took the Thunder and the Wolves
00:59:36I'm going with Grizzlies as my finals pick
00:59:38And I'll say
00:59:40It'll be a very spicy finals
00:59:42And then maybe Marcus Smart
00:59:44Becomes the villain
00:59:46Which would be a wild case
00:59:48Alright folks
00:59:50We're going to end this with a blind ranking
00:59:52I liked doing it so much the last time
00:59:54And so we're doing it again
00:59:56J and B-Rob
00:59:58This is for potential
01:00:00Still potable guests
01:00:02I've picked five names
01:00:04And we'll go through them one at a time
01:00:06But you have to rank them
01:00:08This is a good way to insult potential guests
01:00:10Are these realistic guests?
01:00:12Are we insulting anyone?
01:00:16I think they're realistic guests
01:00:18No one we've had on the pod
01:00:20So far
01:00:22But we'll start
01:00:24With the first one
01:00:26So rank them one through five
01:00:28Donnie Wahlberg
01:00:30Five
01:00:32Yeah
01:00:34That's an easy five
01:00:40I'm a huge fan of Donnie Wahlberg
01:00:42He once sat down with my mother
01:00:44I think I've told this on the podcast before
01:00:46She went to Wahlburgers
01:00:48He sat down with her and her friends
01:00:50Seemed like a great guy
01:00:52Talked to them for like an hour
01:00:54So she's a big Donnie Wahlberg fan
01:00:56If she is, I am
01:00:58But I just don't know
01:01:00If I'd want to talk ball with her
01:01:02That's fair
01:01:04He's coming in at a clear five
01:01:06Luke Cornett
01:01:10Two
01:01:12I'm gonna go
01:01:14Three here
01:01:16I need consensus from you guys
01:01:18I need
01:01:20Who feels stronger on the matter
01:01:22I guess I'll go
01:01:24Three
01:01:26We talk to him a lot
01:01:28Not on the podcast
01:01:30We talk to him a lot
01:01:32So I think
01:01:34Based on who else you're doing
01:01:36That would be a very enjoyable
01:01:38Guest for the Still Potable
01:01:40Crew here
01:01:42Mick Lovin
01:01:44Christopher Minsploss
01:01:50This is why
01:01:52I think
01:01:54I'm gonna do this for the super bad talk
01:01:56I go two here
01:01:58Also in role models
01:02:00Also huge Celtics fan
01:02:02I'm going one
01:02:04This is wow
01:02:06I need consensus from you guys
01:02:08I can't keep track of both of your blind rankings
01:02:10Maybe I can
01:02:12We'll go two
01:02:14There's gonna be another big name on this
01:02:16But Mick Lovin himself
01:02:18He's way up there among potentials for me
01:02:20So we've got one, Mick Lovin, Luke Cornett
01:02:22And then the four spot
01:02:24And then Donnie Wahlberg
01:02:26Going with the next one
01:02:28Joe Mazzulla
01:02:30One
01:02:32Yeah
01:02:34You can't risk
01:02:36This is all about sequencing
01:02:38Just a fascinating guy
01:02:40And then the final one
01:02:42Mayor Michelle Wu
01:02:46Can we flip her with Donnie?
01:02:48No, you can't flip anything
01:02:52Jay didn't want to insult anyone
01:02:54I think four worked out just fine
01:02:58She's a Celtics fan
01:03:00I switched up
01:03:02I put in Mayor Wu
01:03:04Instead of Mayor Wu
01:03:06What if I said Kendrick Perkins?
01:03:12Perkins would be up there
01:03:14That'd be tough
01:03:16He'd obviously be sliding into four
01:03:18But I think getting him
01:03:20He'd be closer to two or three
01:03:22That'd be a pretty big ad
01:03:24You could go a lot of different ways with him
01:03:26Just hitting the 08 to 2010 stories
01:03:28You could fill up probably
01:03:30A couple podcasts
01:03:32Digging into that
01:03:34Much less everything else
01:03:36That he can put on your plate
01:03:38So it sounds like we're in agreement here folks
01:03:40We've got two targets for the season
01:03:42To come on Still Potable
01:03:44Joe Mazzulla and Mick Lovin
01:03:46And I think we can make both of those happen
01:03:48With your help
01:03:50Mick Lovin, personally
01:03:52But that's just because I am scared of Joe Mazzulla
01:03:56And would have to talk to him face to face
01:03:58But either would be great gets
01:04:00And maybe it's possible
01:04:02In the Still Potable universe we've had
01:04:04You guys watch the intro
01:04:06You've seen the wall of fame of people come on
01:04:08I have heard rumors
01:04:10That T-Money's been in the lab
01:04:12Preparing a new intro song
01:04:14So get hyped for that
01:04:16Until that's ready though Packard
01:04:18I'll record 19
01:04:20We need the edit
01:04:22For the opener
