00:00The cabinet has reportedly rejected the proposal to make halal certification mandatory for
00:08restaurants and food companies that do not serve pork or alcohol.
00:12According to Hsinchu Daily, the cabinet has unanimously agreed to keep the halal certification
00:18on a voluntary basis.
00:20The source also told the Chinese newspaper that the government had no intention of forcing
00:25operators to apply for the certification.
00:28Previously, Jiaqim said it is considering making halal certification a requirement for
00:33restaurants that do not serve pork or alcohol.
00:36DAP Vice-Chairman Teresa Kok had opposed the move, saying it could impose significant
00:42burdens on small businesses.
00:44While DAP Secretary-General Lok Siu Fok defended Kok's remarks, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim
00:49insisted that the Supreteh MP's views were her own.
00:53Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zaid Hamidi said non-Muslim business operators
00:58could not and should not be forced to obtain halal certification.
