We went to the Sheffield town of Stocksbridge and found out why people love living there
Transcript
00:00It's known for its links to pop stars, international footballers, steel and countryside.
00:07So, we went out to the Sheffield town of Stocksbridge to find out what people love about the town which is Sheffield's most northerly outpost.
00:16Stocksbridge has plenty of claims to fame.
00:19Two famous bands, the Arctic Monkeys and Bring Me the Horizon, went to Stocksbridge High School.
00:24And the former England striker, Jamie Vardy, played for Stocksbridge Park Steels, which has name to stand after him.
00:32But it's also home to one of Sheffield's remaining steel manufacturers, Liberty Steel, still operating there, in a town which was once home to Samuel Fox and Company Steelworks.
00:43But residents also love the beautiful countryside in which the town is set, as well as the massive retail centre at Fox Valley.
00:52The town has its own museum in the Stocksbridge Town Council offices, and there are plans for a £24 million regeneration of part of the town centre around the library near Manchester Road.
01:03We asked residents what they love most about living in the town.
01:07Jean Thompson, who runs the Garden of Eden florist on Manchester Road, loves Stocksbridge.
01:15I like the views, I like the people, they're really lovely and friendly, homely. I just like the nice feel of it, how everybody's welcoming.
01:26Is there a lot to do here as well?
01:28There's always something to do, whether it be walking, socialising, gathering groups, all different things.
01:37And are the facilities good?
01:39I would like to think so, yeah. There's a bit of everything for everybody. It could do with a few more shops, clothing shops, etc.
01:46There's quite a few eating places and coffee places, so it could do with a variable amount of things in here as well, to keep everybody in the village, yeah.
01:55Can you tell me what you like most about living in Stocksbridge, please?
01:59I love the people in Stocksbridge, and the charity shops are amazing, as are the staff, with the glass breaking behind it.
02:07What about the facilities, are they any good?
02:09Living in Stocksbridge, we've got the best sports centre run by all our local friends. I love to go there, not that often at the moment, given that I'm on crutches, but I'm looking forward to getting back.
02:21What about the scenery, how does that rate?
02:23From my home, I can literally look out across the valley and see the sheep, so I love it when it's quiet, then you can hear the sheep.
02:31Is it the best place to live then, do you think?
02:33I've been in Stocksbridge for about nearly 25 years, it's a great place to live.
02:39Just talking to Myro Zan of Fox Valley Bikes, could you tell me, Myro, please, what you like most about Stocksbridge?
02:47Yeah, I guess just the access to the outdoors, so we're close to Peak District, we've got some reservoirs, and then there's the Warrington Cliff Woods, so there's a lot to do if you like outdoors.
02:56But I guess if you're just going out in town, there's not much of a town here. So yeah, just in general, the outdoor things, the space is quite nice, yeah.
03:07Tell me what you like most about Stocksbridge?
03:09Well, it's a very nice place, it's countryside, it's a community, we all look after one another, we've got lots of friends that, you know, we're virtually in a circle, so we can look after one another and we help each other out when everybody's ill and things.
03:25Is there a lot to do here as well in Stocksbridge?
03:29Well, for myself, I like to go to the Christian Centre at Stocksbridge, up Cedar Road, they have a coffee morning and a warm welcome.
03:42We've got a lovely library here as well, so, and love Fox Valley, what can you say, not say about Fox Valley, Fox Valley's fantastic.
03:51But if we could get some more shops here in the centre of town, and if they do generate, as I say, they're going to do, I hope we'll perhaps have some nice little cafes up here and some nice, you know, little shops and things, so it'll be nice for everybody really.
