00:00The netizens asked their animal rights groups to add a new lion cub to Manila Zoo.

00:07But another group has a different opinion.

00:15On social media, Manila Zoo and Manila Mayor Hani Lacuna introduced their new pet,

00:22Ayla, a lion cub or baby lion.

00:25Baby Ayla is added to the collection of animals in the zoo.

00:29But the public hasn't seen Ayla yet because it has been raised and strengthened.

00:35But in the comments on their social media posts, there are those who are not happy.

00:39There are those who are worried that Ayla may not be taken care of properly.

00:43There are also those who are asking to keep it in the wild.

00:46It may also be like Mali, who died in 2023 at the age of 49.

00:52Usually, 80-year-old Asian elephants reach the age of Mali

00:56when they are under captivity and 60-years-old when they are in the wild.

01:00The Philippine Animal Welfare Society opposed.

01:03In our opinion, there is no longer any argument for the promotion of zoos

01:08in that it's educational or that it supports conservation efforts.

01:12Because to be honest, they don't exhibit the behaviors that they should normally exhibit

01:18in the correct environment where they should really live.

01:22People are also dissatisfied with the ethical treatment of animals or pets.

01:26It's not good for them. It's just good for the zoo.

01:31Let's give this baby lion to an expert who can rehabilitate and assess

01:39if it can return to its natural habitat.

01:44If not, it should be placed in a sanctuary, not in a zoo.

01:50But according to the group Wildlife Matters,

01:52it still depends on the care of the zoo if a pet will be placed.

01:56A good zoo would play an important role in conservation, especially for endangered species

02:00because they can create breeding programs or conduct research and educate the public.

02:05Of course, they would have to prioritize animal welfare

02:09by making sure that they have the proper environment that mimics their natural habitat.

02:13It's also different if the animal placed in the zoo came from the wild or domesticated.

02:19If it was already domesticated and generations and generations of domesticated lions,

02:27I mean, it came from breeders who were in captivity for a long time,

02:31then technically it's not a wild animal anymore.

02:35Bringing it back to the wild could possibly do it more harm than good.

02:40We tried to get a statement from the local government of Manila,

02:43but they said they can't issue a statement for now.

02:46We went to the Manila Zoo, but no one came to us.

02:50They said they need a go signal from the city hall.

02:53Whether the animals are domesticated or in the wild,

02:56they just want the right care and livelihood.
