00:20APPLAUSE
00:32Hello, everybody. Welcome to Furly Giddy Countdown Studio.
00:35It's the summer, it's Friday.
00:38Well, we'll stay off the pims long enough to get this show done,
00:41but after that, all bets are off.
00:43We're going out, Rachel, and I'm not ruling out karaoke.
00:46Oh, yeah, well, I've got my sparkly shoes on for dancing,
00:49but I don't know what's worse, my dancing or my singing.
00:52Well, let me guess your karaoke songs.
00:54We've never done karaoke. Is it We Can Work It Out by the Beatles?
00:57No. Is it 99 Red Balloons?
01:00Not any more.
01:02What is it? What are you going to...?
01:04My friends and I were famously...
01:07We cleared out a restaurant in France with Wannabe by the Spice Girls.
01:12We are all dreadful.
01:14Well, listen, mine's That's Life by Frank Sinatra.
01:16Nice. Classy. Looking forward to it.
01:19Let's go to Dictionary Corner.
01:21And a G of the D who has no idea what FR David was talking about
01:25when he said, words don't come easy.
01:27Susie Dent's here. Hi, Susie.
01:29All right, thank you.
01:31And a man that's always making a song and dance, strictly speaking,
01:34it's Brendan Cole!
01:36Sweet, how is that possible?
01:38Ten years ago, in Majorca. Come on, that's me.
01:41That's not for daytime TV, that story.
01:44True.
01:45I'll swiftly move on and we'll introduce our champion,
01:48Jewel Bekajan.
01:50Jewel, is that Turkish, I'm thinking?
01:52It is Turkish, yeah.
01:53Tell us about that.
01:54My dad's from Turkey.
01:56He's from the Black Sea, from an area called Trabzon.
02:00I'm just going to briefly divulge,
02:02Trabzon's still won the title last season,
02:05so hopefully we'll be in the Champions League playoffs coming up.
02:08Right, but they hadn't won it in decades, had they?
02:11It's been a lot of misery for them.
02:1338 years.
02:14Wow.
02:15Well, listen, you're up against a man
02:17who's hoping to be firing in all cylinders.
02:19Mike Cannon is here. Hi, Mike.
02:20Hi.
02:21And you actually are a singer and you love musical theatre.
02:24In fact, you've directed loads of musicals.
02:27Tell us all about your musical background.
02:29Yeah, so I do sing, I sing in choirs,
02:32and I do a lot of musical direction for theatre.
02:36So that's accompanying, that's leading bands,
02:38that's vocal coaching, teaching the songs, that kind of thing.
02:41You can't tell us that, right?
02:43We've just been talking about karaoke.
02:45What's your song?
02:46I'm going to say it's Walking In Memphis.
02:48Right, would you do us the honour of just a couple of lines?
02:51It'll settle you in, all your nerves will go.
02:53What is it, Put On My Blue Suede Shoes?
02:55That is correct, yes.
02:57Just a couple of lines.
02:58So it goes...
02:59HE SINGS
03:02Et cetera.
03:03That's it!
03:04There you go.
03:08We'll have to take them out tonight, won't we,
03:10if we want to hear a bit more than that.
03:12But let's strike the first chord, as always.
03:14The champion starts, let's get some letters.

04:37There you go. Brendan, anything else in Dictionary Corner?
04:39A couple of sevens in the middle there.
04:41Anguish. Hosting.
04:43See, that singing just loosened you up, right?
04:45All the nerves went and you started with an A,
04:48which is wonderful. And, Michael, it's your letters.
04:50Hi, Rachel. Hi, Mike.

06:00Retain. Mike? Minuter.
06:02Minuter. More minute.
06:04Does that...? Suze, can we confirm?
06:06Well, change the pronunciation a little bit
06:08and have miniter spelt the same way and it's absolutely fine.
06:11In Scottish law, it's a personal party presenting a minute to the court.
06:14We'll stick with that, Mike. I believe you.
06:16Over to Dictionary Corner. I always believe Dictionary Corner.
06:19Anything better, Brendan?
06:21Ruminite. Oh, ruminite. Very good.
06:23Suze? Yes, first minute. Find this one.
06:25A variety of amber found in Romania.
06:27Obviously. Right.
06:2915-0 to Mike. We'll start by a challenger.
06:31It all changed, though, with these ten points.
06:33Jo, you did very well in your debut with the numbers.
06:35Let's get the first ones of the day.
06:37Can I have one large, please?
06:39You can indeed. Not panicking, not gambling.

07:21Never be more hard numbers around than your first.
07:24Whatever the target is. How did you get on, Mike?
07:27746. 746. Nailed it.
07:30What about you, Jo? 746.
07:32Mike, I'll let you have a go.
07:34So, 6 plus 9 is 15. Yep.
07:36Multiply that by 50 for 750.
07:3910 minus 6 is 4.
07:41Yeah, the 6. Lovely.
07:43Take the 4 from the 750.
07:45Jo, did you do it the same way? I did do it the same way.
07:49Mike checking there obviously doesn't quite trust Jo yet.
07:53Mike, there's so much I want to talk to you about
07:55that we'll get on to later in the show,
07:57but you're a quiz master. Yes.
07:59Yes, so you're used to asking questions.
08:01Listen, will you do me a favour, because we're all a family here,
08:03would you like to read the tea time teaser
08:05and take over the presenting role? I would love to, yes.
08:07OK, let me slide it along to you there.
08:09You've seen me do it, so do it better.
08:12I'm going to read it.
08:15So, the teaser is, rest in pip, rest in pip.
08:18The clue is, it's not a club, spade or diamond,
08:21it's a different type of suit.
08:23It's not a club, spade or diamond, it's a different type of suit.
08:26Yes!
08:28APPLAUSE
08:31APPLAUSE
08:37I've just been told I'm out of a job.
08:39Rest in pip, it's not a club, spade or diamond,
08:41it's a different type of suit.
08:43The answer is pinstripe.
08:45What a start to today's show.
08:47The challengers hit the ground running.
08:49We'll be back with them in a moment.

10:22One of my favourite words,
10:24tadpole.
10:26Those words just sound right when they leave your mouth.
10:28Prelate. That doesn't sound quite as nice.
10:30That's a nice tadpole. The word here is nice.
10:32A few eights, a couple of eights in there, maybe.

12:08Brendan, do you get that?
12:10Never felt so old in my life, yeah.
12:12LAUGHTER
12:14There's a lovely little eight in there. Opiating.
12:16Hey? Uh-oh.
12:18Excuse my ignorance. Is opiating...?
12:20Opiates is with opium or another drug.
12:22So basically getting high is opiating.
12:24It's true. Opiating. OK, there you go.
12:26Well, it's Mike flying high at the moment.
12:2838 points plays 23.

13:24Too far away.
13:26Too far away. Mike?
13:28I think I've got 541, but it's not written down.
13:30Go for it straight away, sir.
13:328 x 75 is 600.
13:348 x 75, 600.
13:369 x 5 is 45.
13:38Yeah.
13:40Minus the 9.
13:42And I've just realised I've used the 5 twice.
13:44Aw, bad luck.
13:46Rachel, this was a tricky one.
13:48Well, you know what?
13:50I think a certain Miss Denticles is staring at me.
13:52Susie, have you nailed this?
13:54Possibly, but possibly not.
13:56I've done 75 plus 25, plus 8.
13:58Plus 25, plus 8, 108.
14:00Minus 5.
14:02Times by 5 is 540.
14:04And then 9 minus the other 8 is what?
14:06Ten points to Susie D.
14:08Oh, yes!
14:10Brilliant stuff.
14:12Listen, let's stay where we are
14:14and make another pilgrimage
14:16to Dictionary Corner. Brandon Cole?
14:18Pilgrimage.
14:20In this particular job that we call showbiz,
14:22we get to do some incredible things.
14:24Several years ago,
14:26I got to go on a pilgrimage.
14:28I'm not a religious man by any stretch of the means.
14:30And we,
14:32unbeknownst to us, we got the opportunity,
14:34we had the opportunity to meet the Pope.
14:36I did have a proper conversation
14:38about contraception.
14:40And he spoke about it.
14:42I thought it was a phenomenal moment.
14:44So just how lucky we are
14:46in this world of showbiz.
14:48We get to do these incredible things.
14:50And that was definitely a highlight of my life,
14:52even though I do not believe in faith as such.
14:54And just out of interest,
14:56do you get a triple A pass to the Vatican?
14:58Any time I want to go.
15:00Yeah?
15:02Wonderful. We'll make that a deal.
15:04I might pass out of it, probably.
15:06Thank you very much.
15:08APPLAUSE
15:10So Kathleen Jo needs a bit of divine intervention.
15:12Not too much.

16:24Mascot.
16:26Mascot. And Joe?
16:28Tourism. And tourism.
16:30Very good. Well done. I didn't see that at all.
16:32That's for the champion Dawes.
16:34Seven points closes the gap.
16:36Let's see if Dictionary Corner can grab this one
16:38by the short and curlies.
16:40LAUGHTER
16:42It's funny you should say that.
16:44It's not every day you get to come on television and say scrotum,
16:46but there you go.
16:48Not only do you get to say it, but now Rachel Riley
16:50has to stand beside it.
16:52LAUGHTER
16:54It's one of those moving on moments, Mike, letters.
16:56Can we start with a consonant, please?
16:58Thank you, Mike. D.
17:00N.

18:01Very good. Mike? Eight.
18:03Joe. Rationed. Mike?
18:05Ordinate. Ordinate.
18:07I thought we were going to get double rations, but...
18:09Ordinate. That's an excellent term for maths.
18:11Well done indeed, Mike.
18:13APPLAUSE
18:15What's done for you, Twinkle Toes?
18:18You're not going to beat that, are you? No.
18:20Simple as that. Wonderful stuff.
18:22And it means there's less than a conundrum
18:24between both our contestants today,
18:26or less than a numbers round.
18:28So let's get straight down to it. Joe.
18:30One large, please.
18:32Thank you, Joe. Sticking with your preferred choice.
18:35And this time your five little numbers are four,
18:38four, seven, ten,

19:44And you get to our producers' favourite band, 9-1-1.
19:46Joe?
19:48Same way.
19:50Let me check with our numbers expert for this.
19:52Susie? No, I didn't get this one.
19:54What do we do here when Susie can't get it?
19:56We go to Rachel.
19:58Just a couple of ways.
20:00One, meddle this around a little bit.
20:0210-1 is 9.
20:04Times that by your 25 for 225.
20:07Add on a 4 here for 229.
20:10And times it by the second 4, 916.
20:13Beautiful.
20:15APPLAUSE
20:17Keeps it just eight points in it.
20:19Let's have a tea-time teaser as we catch our breath.
20:23Nerdy Bats.
20:25He was there, but he just didn't do anything.
20:27He just observed.
20:29He was there, but he just didn't do anything.
20:31He just observed.
20:40APPLAUSE
20:47Nerdy Bats was the tea-time teaser.
20:49He was there, but he didn't do anything.
20:51He just observed.
20:53Of course, he was a bystander.
20:55Not an innocent one, but a bystander.
20:57This is beautiful to watch today.
20:59Joe, our champion, closing the gap on Mike, our challenger,
21:02after his great start.
21:04There's eight points in it.
21:06This could go to a crucial conundrum,
21:08but there's a long way to go before that,
21:10so let's get straight on to it.
21:12Mike, it's your letters.
21:14Let's start with a consonant, please.
21:16Thank you, Mike. V.
21:18And another? S.

21:50MUSIC PLAYS
22:11Time's up. Mike?
22:13It's a seven. Joe? Seven.
22:15Brilliant. What's yours, Joe? Sleeved.
22:17Sleeved. And Mike? I've got the same.
22:19OK, great. Seven.
22:21OK, what has the dynamic duo got for me?
22:23Couple more sevens. Couple more sevens.
22:25Descale. Yeah.
22:27Yeah, and cleaved. I had cleaved.
22:29I was thinking it would be, you chop the meat off the butcher, cleaves.
22:32Yes, but it's one of those words that's got a dual identity,
22:35dual personality, because it can also mean to stick together,
22:38as in she really cleaved my side. Oh, good.
22:40So it's strange, quite a violent word and then quite a beautiful word.
22:43Yes, yes. I love that. OK. Really important round coming up now.
22:46We can't separate them. Joe, what's your letters?
22:48Can I have a consonant, please? Thank you, Joe.

23:54Joe? Deranged?
23:56And Mike? Enraged.
23:58Enraged and deranged.
24:00Those are excellent. Very, very good.
24:02Loads of sevens again in there, but we can't separate them.
24:05Is there an eight? No, it just had groaned otherwise.
24:08So they're right at the top of their game?
24:10They definitely are. There you go.
24:12Just to build the tension a little bit more, you'll have to stew,
24:15which is the origin of words.
24:17I will try and entertain while you stew, hopefully.
24:21Colin, I remember you ages ago growing a moustache for Movember.
24:24Yes. Have you ever grown a beard?
24:27Sometimes I'd get lazy.
24:29All right, well, did you know that there was such a thing as a beard second,
24:33which is a really strange unit of measurement?
24:36And a beard second is essentially the approximate length
24:40that a man's beard will grow in one second,
24:43which is five nanometres, believe it or not.
24:46It's a really niche unit of measurement,
24:49but it is used within physics, as is the SMOOT, S-M-O-O-T,
24:53which was named after the chairman
24:55of the American National Standards Institute,
24:57who was called Oliver Smoot.
24:59And in 1958, he attempted to gauge the length of the Harvard Bridge
25:03using his own body as a measuring tape.
25:06On to some measurements that you will have heard of.
25:09A furlong, that's 220 yards,
25:12and that goes back to furrow long,
25:14so that was essentially the length of a furrow
25:16that oxen could plough before they're rested and then turned again.
25:20Baker's dozen, essentially that's 13, as you know,
25:24goes back to 13th-century medieval law
25:27that would punish any bakers that shortchanged their customers.
25:30Some say that actually the punishments were pretty awful,
25:33like amputating hands and things.
25:35No proof of that, thankfully, but they would give out 13
25:38so that they didn't actually fall foul of the law.
25:41OK, if you ask someone to wait a moment,
25:43you might like to know that you're asking them to wait
25:46for a really short period of time.
25:48And it turns out that a medieval unit of time for the moment
25:51is 140th of an hour, or 1½ minutes.
25:54So if somebody says, I'll just be a moment and takes half an hour,
25:57you can berate them with the fact that actually
25:59they should have just taken 1½ minutes.
26:01Yes, love it.
26:03I love all of those, but the Baker's dozen,
26:06it's kind of made me a little bit sad, really,
26:08because these days I associate products,
26:10and Brendan will back me up on this,
26:12it feels like everything's got smaller.
26:14I thought my hands were getting bigger, but then it's true.
26:17A lot of companies, they cut down the size for the same price.
26:20Fewer and fewer. Shrinkflation.
26:22Nobody likes shrinkflation.
26:24No. What a horrible thing.
26:26Well, let me give you the only number that matters at the moment.
26:29Four. Four more rounds between Joe and Mike.
26:32And, Mike, it's your letters.
26:34Can you start with the consonant, please?
26:37And another.
26:40And another.
26:43One more, please.
26:47And a vowel.
26:50And another.
26:53And another.
26:56And one more.
27:01And a final consonant, please.
27:03A final N.
27:05Einstein.
27:34Joe?
27:36Seven. Mike?
27:38I'll go with a risky seven, then.
27:40OK, let's have the risky one first.
27:42Misty'd. Misty'd. Joe?
27:44I think there's probably two. Mindset.
27:46Mindset. Well, Mindset, I'm sure you're in solid ground.
27:49Misty'd, we'll find out.
27:51Yeah, spot on. Mindset is in, Misty'd isn't, I'm afraid.
27:54Oh, no! Sorry, Mike. Oh, Mike, a drop stitch!
27:57Well, it's been a while where Dictionary Corner
28:00could have anything better than these two,
28:02but maybe this time, Brendan.
28:04Only just. I mean, I had a little seven stained, but Mediants for eight.
28:07Oh, beautiful. Mediants.
28:09Yes, they are the third note of the musical scale
28:12and there's also dainties, like little sweet little cakes
28:15you might have on doilies. Beautiful. There you go.
28:17If you're having dainties at home, I hope you're enjoying them.
28:20It's just one point between Mike and Joe now.
28:22I don't need to say anything. Joe, let's get some more letters.
28:25Can I have a consonant, please? Thank you, Joe.
28:27F. And again.
28:29R. And again.
28:32B. And a vowel, please.
28:35E. And again.
28:37U. And again.
28:40E. And again.
28:44O. And a consonant.
28:47L. And a final consonant, please.
28:50A final N.
28:52Last letters.
29:02MUSIC PLAYS
29:24Joe? I think seven.
29:26You think Mike? Six.
29:28Mike, quickly, the six? Enrolls.
29:30And Joe, straight to the seven. Enrolls.
29:32Spell? E-N-R-U-L-E-S.
29:35Straight to Dictionary Corner. Susie, this is huge.
29:38Yeah, erm, no enrolls, I'm afraid. I'm sorry.
29:42Yeah, so six points for Mike.
29:44Joe, what colour the trubs and spore were?
29:47Er, blue and burgundy.
29:49OK, that'll make you a blue-nose, then.
29:51Blue-nose? Don't...
29:53Yes! Can I say I'm a Priggish or Puritanical person?
29:56That is excellent. It's a blue-nose.
29:58Well done.
30:02Right, that's... Wow, look at that.
30:04Those six points means there's seven points in it.
30:07It's time for the final numbers, and Mike is going to pick them.
30:10Have two large and four small, please.
30:12You can indeed. Two big, four little.
30:14All important final numbers of the week.
30:16And their selection is six, two, nine,
30:20another two in the big ones, 125.
30:24And your target, 554.
30:26Last numbers.
30:57554.
31:00Both pens are down. Joe?
31:02553.
31:04What a way, Mike.
31:06I think I've got 554, but not written down.
31:09Do it straight away.
31:11Six times 100 is 600.
31:14600.
31:1625 plus two?
31:1827.
31:20Multiply by two?
31:22Times by two... Sorry, two is 54.
31:24Er, take it off. No, I've gone the wrong way.
31:27Oh, no!
31:29Joe?
31:31So I did the six times 100 is 600.
31:3425 times two is 50.
31:37Take that off.
31:39550.
31:41Take off the nine and add the two.
31:43Sorry, I've done it the wrong way as well.
31:46I'm... Oh, dear, oh, dear.
31:49Oh, wow.
31:51That was a bit of fun, wasn't it?
31:53Now, both have gone wrong.
31:55I've gone wrong myself. Rachel, save everyone.
31:57There were a couple of ways. The easiest way to rub salt into...
32:00I always hate it when you say that. Mike's wound.
32:02Well, if he'd have just said minus the two here,
32:04carried on with his method, 23 times 246, take that away.
32:07Oh! Rachel never lets us down.
32:09Thank you, Rachel. Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant.
32:12APPLAUSE
32:14So we started with karaoke and we're going to finish with an encore.
32:17Mike has 73.
32:19Joe has 66.
32:21Will it be a second win for Joe
32:23or is Mike going to take the champion's chair?
32:26Let's find out and reveal today's crucial Countdown Conundrum.
32:51MUSIC PLAYS
33:02Well, after Susie upstaging Rachel with her numbers,
33:05which, believe me, I thought was a little out of place,
33:08let's go straight to Rachel for the conundrum.
33:10I could still be wrong. Is it Unruliest?
33:12Is it?
33:14Yes!

33:24One and done, Joe, but one title.

33:29It did indeed, thank you.
33:30Listen, they got a trophy, but they didn't get a teapot.
33:33No!
