00:05APPLAUSE
00:31Hello, everybody.
00:32You may notice a subtle difference between yesterday's show and today,
00:36but everybody knows this story by now,
00:38so let me simply welcome you to one of Britain's most loved TV shows
00:42of all time and remind you that there are only two stars of Countdown,
00:46the letters and the numbers.
00:48I was up all last night working out how many shows.
00:517,803, and it's an absolute honour to present them.
00:57We never take you watching for granted
00:59and it's great to spend it in the company
01:01of two of my favourite people in the world.
01:03First of all, the Batman to my Robin.
01:05Rachel Riley. Hi, Rachel.
01:06I'm the Batman and you're the Robin. Yes.
01:08I like that we've got the precedent sorted straight away.
01:10Very nice. Welcome back, Colin.
01:12Thank you. Very nice of you to say that.
01:14The reason why I mentioned the Caped Crusader
01:16was I can't remember what I was doing this day last week,
01:19but I remember what I was doing this day in 2008.
01:22I was queuing outside the cinema
01:25on day one of The Dark Knight coming out,
01:27which I don't know whether you remember it.
01:29Were you wearing a cape and hood?
01:31Full dress. Of course. Yes. I can imagine nothing less.
01:34I often wear tights at the weekend anyway.
01:36You know what? I think The Dark Knight is a bit too brooding for me.
01:39Really? I'm definitely a Deadpool girl.
01:41Deadpool's a great choice.
01:43I go Harley Quinn, the Joker's ex, but imagine if he called round.
01:46Imagine if he was jealous. I'm not winning that fight, so...
01:49You better hope there's no paparazzi around that night.
01:52Absolutely. Well, listen, on the subject of superheroes,
01:55we do have a dent in Dictionary Corner,
01:57but who needs a Harvey when we have a Susie?
02:00Lovely to see you, Susie. Thank you.
02:02APPLAUSE
02:04And listen, he might be a BC instead of a DC,
02:08but he's a marvel at the Mambo.
02:10Brendan Cole's here!
02:12APPLAUSE
02:14You must have danced in your fair share of tights.
02:17Yes, I have. You're right, I have indeed.
02:19None with a cape, though.
02:21There you go. Still plenty of time.
02:23Can't wait to hear from you over the next five shows, Brendan.
02:26Really nice to have you.
02:27And a chance for two new contestants to be a hero today.
02:30And when it comes to Damon Pink, well, you've got superhero endurance.
02:34I have. I've worked very hard at it,
02:37but at the moment I'm in the midst of crossing the Pyrenees
02:41on a famous walk called the GR10.
02:43Right. We don't shoot the show in the Pyrenees.
02:45He hasn't just stopped off.
02:47So you can do it in stages, come back to the UK and then head back?
02:51Yeah. The whole walk takes a normal walker about 40 days,
02:55and I've done ten days of it so far, so about a third.
02:58Now, I don't mean to embarrass Damon,
03:00but have a look at this boat race, right?
03:02I'm 45. If you think fitness matters,
03:05now take a look at Damon Pink and guess his age.
03:08Younger than me, right?
03:10He's 58 years old. Unbelievable.
03:13I need to join you in the mountains.
03:15You're welcome to.
03:16He's looking at me going, yeah, you do. You definitely, definitely do.
03:19Well, listen, as I say, two new contestants today,
03:22and you're up against a potential Wonder Woman of words.
03:26Jo Bekajan is with us.
03:28And, Jo, you're a triple C.
03:30You're a Covid Countdown convert. Tell us about that.
03:33I am. So I started watching daily when, yeah, lockdown,
03:37the first lockdown happened, and I've been watching ever since.
03:41Right, OK, so you would have...
03:43Nick here would be your first presenter.
03:45Yeah, yeah, Nick was, yeah.
03:47Yeah. I go all the way back to Richard Whiteley.
03:49Your favourite's always your first that you get to see.
03:52Now, you play an instrument that's not considered to be cool,
03:55if you don't mind me saying, but actually it's in loads of big songs.
03:58The oboe.
03:59It is indeed. Peter and the Wolf, it plays the duck.
04:02Yes, very good.
04:04But, yeah, I played mostly classical oboe music, yeah.
04:08Well, you got Sonny and Cher, I got You Babe,
04:10that's got oboe in it, believe it or not.
04:12Crazy For You by Madonna, that's got oboe in it as well.
04:16Have you got a favourite song to play?
04:18Um, Albinoni's Concerto in D.
04:21That's exactly what I was going to say too.
04:23That's my favourite song with oboe in it.
04:25Good choice, good choice.
04:27Round of applause, Damon and Jo!
04:29APPLAUSE
04:32Damon, you're not a champion yet, but you're in the champion's chair,
04:35so you get to pick the first letters.
04:37Hi, Rachel. Hi, Damon.
04:39Could I have a vowel, please? You can indeed.
04:41Start today with O.
04:43And another.
04:44E.
04:46And another.
04:48E.
04:49And a consonant, please.
04:51P.
04:53And another.
04:54N.
04:55And another.
04:57T.

05:00I.
05:02And a consonant.

05:07And the last one, R.
05:09OK, for the first time today at home and in the studio,
05:11let's play Countdown.
05:37CLASSICAL MUSIC PLAYS
05:43Pen's down, goes quicker when you're in the studio, doesn't it?
05:46Damon, how many? Seven.
05:48Jo? I think eight.
05:50And eight, OK. Damon, the seven.
05:52Peating.
05:53Yeah. And Jo?
05:55Peetering.
05:56Peetering.
05:57Well, Susie, a friendly set of letters for the first game
06:00for both of them, but what are you saying?
06:02Yeah, it is nice, actually.
06:04I mean, double E has to be P-E-A.
06:06But, yeah, I had the I-N-G, which is always a help.
06:09Yeah, absolutely.
06:10But peatering is absolutely brilliant.
06:12Peatering's good. Well done.
06:14APPLAUSE
06:16So what's the nine, Brendan? Is there one?
06:18Well, I've got pen for three, so I'm sure there is a nine in there.
06:21I'm just having quite a word today.
06:23If you give me another four hours, I'll be there.
06:25It's mightier than the sword, so I'll give you six points.
06:27Thank you so much. All right, no worries at all.
06:29Right, more letters. And your first time, Jo, you get to say hello to Rachel.
06:32Hi, Jo. Consonant, please.
06:34Thank you. Starts with T.
06:36And another?
06:38M.
06:39And another?
06:41B.
06:42And a vowel, please?

06:45And another?
06:46A.
06:47And another?
06:48O.

07:00And lastly, N.
07:02OK, 30 seconds.
07:31MUSIC STOPS
07:34OK, Jo?
07:35Six.
07:36Six for Jo. Damon?
07:37Six.
07:38And a six, OK. Even Stevens if they're in the dictionary. Jo?
07:41Cation.
07:43And, Damon?
07:44Combat.
07:45So, the dictionary corner. Susie?
07:47Yeah, absolutely fine. A cation is a positively charged ion.
07:50That's totally fine. Very good.
07:52And, Brendan? Anything better than a six?
07:54There is. There's a maconite.
07:56Go, Susie.
07:59Yes, it's from mineralogy, so forgive me if you don't know this one.
08:03And it's a mixture of potassium, magnesium, ferric ion and aluminium.
08:07Wonderful. Damon's on the board. Good battle brewing so far.
08:11Mr Pink, it's your numbers.
08:13One large, please, Rachel.
08:15Keeping it simple, potentially one large. Five little coming up.
08:18And for the first time today, your numbers are three, eight, two, nine,
08:23six and the large one, 75.
08:26And your target to reach, 410.
08:29Numbers up.
08:57410. Damon?
09:01420. Jo?
09:03410.
09:04Well, there you go. Nail on head. Let's have it, Jo.
09:07Well, I hope. 75 x 6 is 450.
09:10Yep, 450.
09:12And then 3 x 2 is 5.
09:14Yep.
09:158 x 5 and then take it off.
09:17Perfect. Well done. 410.
09:19APPLAUSE
09:23Good start by Jo, but the day not over by Damon.
09:26Long way to go. Let's take a breather.
09:28I'll give you our first tea time teaser of the day.
09:30It's pear tango. Pear tango.
09:33The pub had to close down. It had lost all its customers.
09:36The pub had to close down. It had lost all its customers.
09:40MUSIC
09:49APPLAUSE
09:54Well, the bad pear tango.
09:56The pub had to close down, God forbid.
09:59It had lost all its customers.
10:01Patronage is the first tea time teaser of the day.
10:04And during the break, Susie,
10:06we're getting all excited about Jo's oboe.
10:08Well, yes, because I've ordered one myself.
10:11I used to play the clarinet
10:13and I've always wanted to play Gabriel's oboe from The Mission.
10:16It's just the most beautiful music, so that's my new dream.
10:20OK, well, when you learn it,
10:22you can do your first performance here, right in the middle.
10:24In the middle. Yeah, you up for that? No.
10:26OK, thank you. Straight answers, all they needed.
10:28Jo, let's get back to the game, get some letters.
10:30Can I have the consonant, please, Rachel?
10:32Thank you, Jo. S
10:34And another?
10:36D
10:37And another?

11:32It's going to be big, isn't it? Let's find out. Jo?
11:35Seven. Seven. Damon?
11:37Nine.
11:38Oh, I just felt it in my waters, I really did.
11:41Jo, what's your seven?
11:42Watered.
11:43OK, and let's find out.
11:45Damon, has he got a nine on his debut performance in Countdown?
11:48Waterside.
11:49Waterside, come on!
11:55Wonderful stuff, Waterside.
11:57As it is, like, Waterside apartment, Waterside pub
12:00that hasn't been closed down.
12:02All of those, yeah, no hyphen any more, so it's absolutely brilliant.
12:05We had sweatier for eight as well, she's not nearly seven.
12:08This is a horrible word after Waterside.
12:10Not enough points, no need sweatier.
12:12Damon, Waterside, you've found your level and it's your letters.
12:15A vowel, please, Rachel?
12:17E
12:18And another?
12:20A
12:21And another?
12:22E
12:23And a consonant, please?

12:47BUZZER
12:49BUZZER
13:15Back-to-back nines, Damon, what have you got?
13:17A seven.
13:18Seven. Jo?
13:19A six.
13:20What's your six, Jo?
13:21Past.
13:22Past. And, Damon?
13:23Pasties.
13:24Oh, there's no T in there, unfortunately.
13:26No.
13:27I even misheard it for a P.
13:28Hard one to swallow.
13:29Damon, six, what game is this?
13:31Six points go to Jo, it's a rollercoaster.
13:33Anything better from Dictionary Corner?
13:35Well, there is, um, Pissabid, which is, um...
13:39It's either a planet or a dandelion, I'm not sure.
13:41OK.
13:42No, it is, it's not an insult towards anybody.
13:44It is the dandelion because it's got diuretic qualities
13:48and it's called piss-en-lis in French,
13:50and so we decided to call it Pissabed.
13:52Right, the scores at the moment, Jo, is six points in the lead
13:56and it's time for your first numbers.
13:58Can I have one large, five small, please?
14:00You can indeed.
14:01Another one from the top, five little combo.
14:04And these little ones are nine, eight, six, five and ten.
14:10And the big one, 100.
14:12Your target to reach, 355.
14:15Numbers up.
14:43MUSIC STOPS
14:46Jo?
14:47Nowhere near.
14:48Nowhere near. OK, Damon?
14:50350.
14:51350 is as close as we are, but let's have a go.
14:54Nine minus six is three.
14:56Yep.
14:57Times 100.
14:58300.
14:59Five times eight is 40.
15:02340.
15:04Plus the nine.
15:05Oh, sorry, I've got it wrong.
15:07That's 349, you declared 350,
15:09so we're going to have to ask you to leave the studio.
15:12LAUGHTER
15:13Rachel, let's have a...
15:14I think, Damon, meant to add the ten there
15:16and you would have got a few points, but sorry about that.
15:19You could have said ten times eight is 80.
15:22Take nine for 71 and times that by five.
15:25Yes.
15:26355.
15:27APPLAUSE
15:29The scores stayed the same.
15:31And we can all take a break now
15:33and cross over to Dictionary Corner and Brendan Cole.
15:36What are we talking about today?
15:38She met Rachel on the show eight, nine years ago
15:41and we discussed doing Strictly Come Dancing.
15:44And next thing you know, Rachel's doing Strictly.
15:46She meets Pasha, falls in love, has two magnificent babies
15:49and now we're sitting here again.
15:51Has Rachel ever thanked you for her children?
15:53No, not properly. I'm still waiting for dinner.
15:56But we've discussed it.
15:58I have.
15:59Basic manners, you know.
16:00I don't know what Brendan means by properly,
16:02but knowing him, I don't want to know.
16:04I'm the same, because I wouldn't be sitting here
16:07had it not been for meeting Susie
16:10at a Metallica gig, moshing away.
16:13And I turn round, there's Susie Dent.
16:16Yeah, moshing away as well.
16:17I'd shared love of Metallica, then she said,
16:19do Dictionary Corner, and then now I'm here
16:22for at least a short period of time.
16:24Suzanne Countdown.
16:25Just like that.
16:26Have you any sliding doors moments, Susie?
16:28Well, maybe that was one of them,
16:30because I just remember it wasn't a Metallica concert,
16:33let's just get this straight,
16:34but the very first time I met you,
16:36still working on Radio 1,
16:37and the first thing you said to me was,
16:39I want to present Countdown.
16:40Wow.
16:41You've wanted to do that all your life, pretty much,
16:43to do this.
16:44No, yes, it's always been my dream.
16:45Very high, I know.
16:46Always been my dream.
16:47Fantastic.
16:48I didn't mean to embarrass you, it wasn't a Metallica gig,
16:50I don't want to sully your upset.
16:52It was Art Garfunkel, wasn't it?
16:53It was Slipknot, if we're being honest.
16:55Right, lovely, I love that.
16:56Well, I'm glad you've finally got what you deserve,
16:59a full thank you from Rachel.
17:01Thank you, Rachel.
17:02For our children.
17:03Lovely.
17:04Thank you, Brenda.
17:07Right, well, listen, just one little moment could change this game.
17:10Just six points in it, and, Damon, it's your letters.
17:13A vowel, please, Rachel.
17:14Thank you, Damon.
17:15E
17:16And another.
17:18U
17:19And another.

18:01MUSIC PLAYS
18:13Right, let's see if Damon can close the gap. How many?
18:15Seven.
18:16Yeah, seven, good, strong seven. Joe?
18:18Four.
18:19Oh, wow, you can have rounds like that where the mind just goes,
18:21you're going to kick yourself, by the way, you really are, Joe.
18:24But what's your four? Can I count?
18:25Cain.
18:26Cain. Well, we don't need to check that.
18:28Damon?
18:29Antenna.
18:30Antenna.
18:32Um, you need three Ns for antenna.
18:36And there's only two, I'm so sorry.
18:38Oh, goodness. OK, I've written it down wrong again.
18:40Oh, sorry, Damon.
18:42OK.
18:43You need to get your radar tuned back in, Damon.
18:45I do.
18:46Because, Joe, it goes to show, no matter what it is,
18:48get it written down, because that is a four,
18:50and that could be what makes a difference at the end of today's show.
18:54Have you got anything more nuanced?
18:56Nuance is a six, and I'm very proud of myself,
18:58because as it came through my ear, I saw nuance in that,
19:00so I actually got one for the first time in my entire countdown life.
19:04I got six.
19:05Can I give you a Scottish six?
19:07A Scottish six?
19:08Yeah, canny. As in, you canny be serious.
19:10That's in as well.
19:11Or would it be a Geordie six, a canny lad?
19:14No, that's with a Y, isn't it?
19:16Yeah, just trying to help, but I'm not in future.
19:18Joe, let's get some more letters.
19:21Can I have a consonant, please?
19:23Thank you, Joe.
19:24R.

20:31Admire.
20:32Yeah, very good indeed.
20:33Anything else there, Brendan?
20:35There is a nine on the board. Randomise.
20:37Randomise, fantastic.
20:42Randomise, a brilliant countdown word.
20:44That's what we do with every round.
20:46And, Damon, let's go again with the numbers.
20:48Six small, please, Rachel.
20:49Six little ones, you're gambling!
20:51Right, let's see if this pays off.
20:53Trying to get some points.
20:55That was a good decision.
20:56The little ones are seven, three, ten, nine...
21:00Eight.
21:01..and another ten.
21:03And the target...
21:04Oh, 968.
21:06Wow, numbers up.
21:26CLOCK TICKS
21:39Wow, pens down.
21:41Sorry to do it to you, Joe.

21:46Damon?
21:47No, sorry.
21:48OK, Joe, let's see if you can get one away.
21:51Ten times nine is 90.
21:53Plus the seven.
21:5497.
21:55Times it by the other ten.
21:57970.
21:58Take away the three.
21:59Yeah, one away.
22:00Nicely done.
22:01Rachel, I'm sure, how long did it take you?
22:04There were a couple of ways.
22:06OK.
22:07It's never easiest with six small.
22:09But one way, you could say ten times ten is 100,
22:14seven times three is 21.
22:17Add those together for 121 and times that by eight for 968.
22:21Very good, very good, very good.
22:24Joe has double the score of Damon at the moment,
22:27but certainly enough points still up for grabs to turn that around.
22:30We'll see what happens. Let's take another break.
22:32It's tennis. It's tennis.
22:34It's tennis on the TV today, she said.
22:37We're not watching any more football.
22:39It's tennis on the TV today, she said.
22:41We're not watching any more football.
22:51APPLAUSE
22:58Welcome back. How did you get on?
23:00It's tennis. It's tennis on the TV today, she said.
23:03We're not watching any more football.
23:05Insistent. Insistent was the answer.
23:08I insist you watch right to the end of today's show,
23:11because even though Joe's got double the points of Damon,
23:14it's just 24 to turn around, and that's entirely possible.
23:18Joe, letters.
23:20Can I have a vowel, please, Rachel?
23:22Thank you, Joe. O

24:20Toughest round yet, I'd say. Joe?
24:23Four.
24:24Four? Listen, that might do it.
24:26Four for Damon as well. What's yours?
24:28Hail.
24:29Hail.
24:30Loaf.
24:31And loaf, OK. Used his loaf to get a four.
24:33Anything better, Brendan?
24:34Only a five. Final.
24:36Wow. There you go. Well, a rare countdown round.
24:39Is there better, Susie?
24:40No, just more fives. Hail on.
24:42Nelly is in there as well, but, no, we couldn't get beyond.
24:46OK. Damon, more letters.
24:48A vowel, please, Rachel.

25:49A five, not written down.
25:51OK, Jo.
25:52Five as well.
25:53OK. Damon, you have to go first.
25:55Avoid.
25:56Yeah, Jo.
25:57Audit.
25:58Two fives all above board?
25:59Yep, absolutely.
26:00OK.
26:01Brendan, last two rounds have been horrible. Any more than a five?
26:05Not much. A gooty, but I don't even know what it means,
26:08so Susie's going to help me out on this one.
26:10It's... You might see it in some animal parks.
26:14It's a burrowing rodent, but it's related to the guinea pig, so it's huge.
26:17So it's like a giant guinea pig.
26:19Right. And a gooty.
26:21Listen, while you're explaining words,
26:23let's just stay with you for another origin of words.
26:25Oh, thanks, Colin.
26:26Well, I'm going to link into the top of the show
26:28when you were talking about superheroes and Batman,
26:31and I'm going to talk about the origin of Gotham and Gotham City,
26:35because you will know that from the Batman comics and the movies.
26:38But the nickname actually predates the Dark Knight by about 120 years,
26:42and it's not what you might think.
26:44So it's been pretty much designed to look like New York City,
26:47and it's become really dark and brooding now,
26:51on the brink of destruction always.
26:53But actually, go back to medieval England,
26:55and it was a sleepy little village in Nottinghamshire,
26:58and Gotham means goat town,
27:01so that's what it meant in Anglo-Saxon and Old English.
27:04So why on earth was it then transferred over, as I say,
27:09to this kind of very brooding version of New York City?
27:12Well, it goes back to a folktale called The Wise Men of Gotham.
27:16And in this folktale, the residents of the village, as it was then,
27:20they catch wind of the fact that King John is going to pass through.
27:23Now, you'd think they would welcome this,
27:25but actually the residents just thought,
27:27he's going to cause absolute chaos,
27:29everything's going to be all over the place, we don't want him here.
27:32So what they decided to do was to feign madness
27:34in order to stop him coming.
27:36So they thought if he thinks that we're completely crazy,
27:38he will not come and see us.
27:40And so they put their plan into action,
27:42they performed these really crazy stunts,
27:44they tried to drown an eel in a pond,
27:46they tried to build a fence around a cuckoo to stop it escaping,
27:51and all sorts of very, very silly little shenanigans.
27:54But it worked. King John bypassed Gotham, he didn't come to see them.
27:58And this was picked up, this folktale,
28:01by Washington Irving, the author.
28:03Now, he was a New York City resident,
28:05and he liked the idea of citizens pretending to be a little bit crazy
28:09because he thought that absolutely fitted the residents of New York City.
28:12And so in one of his stories, which was called Salmagundi,
28:16it was more like a satirical periodical, really,
28:18he decided to call New York City Gotham,
28:21and the nickname has stuck ever since.
28:23Nice, love it. Brilliant.
28:27Right, here we go. It's business time on today's episode of Countdown.
28:31Jo, I believe it's your letters.
28:33Can I have a consonant, please? Thank you, Jo.

29:46Brendan, trials and trails. How's it been over there for you?
29:49Yes, indeed, there is a seven. Lariats.
29:51Lariats!

31:19Gouache.
31:20Gouache, which is a method of painting that uses really thick pigment.
31:24And gouache is also an opaque watercolour, too.
31:27Well, the score paints a very obvious picture.
31:2968-44, with just 20 points left for Graeme.
31:34So, Jo will be our new champion.
31:35But, Damon, the final score is important.
31:37So, you stay focused, my friend, and we'll get Jo's final numbers.
31:41Can I have two large, please?
31:42You can, indeed. Just for pride and for fun, of course.
31:47Final numbers of the day are six, seven, three,
31:51two in the big ones, 50 and 25.
31:54And your target, 523.
31:57Let's do it.
32:12DRAMATIC MUSIC

32:34Jo put her pen down after three seconds,

32:54That leaves us just with today's conundrum.
32:56So, fingers on buzzers, let's reveal today's conundrum.
33:13BELL RINGS
33:15Damon, go on.
33:16Reclusion.
33:18Reclusion. Let's have a look.
33:20Yes!
33:21APPLAUSE
33:27Well, if you don't mind me saying, Damon,
33:29you were a night and day Countdown contestant.
33:33You had a nine, you got the conundrum,
33:36and at other times, you looked like you'd never seen the show before.
33:40But that's what the chair does to you.
33:43It did the same to me.
33:45How do you feel?
33:46Yeah, great. I've had a great day, thank you.
33:48Good fun, hasn't it? Yeah.
33:49Jo, unlike your oboe, you didn't blow it.
33:51Well done.
33:52Thank you.
33:53Jo will be back. She'll be changing chairs, though.
33:55And the Dictionary Corner, back tomorrow.
33:57Susie, Brendan, thank you so much.
33:59Welcome. Have a good day.
34:00Great day, thank you very much. Excellent stuff.
34:02Do you want to hear my favourite childhood Batman joke,
34:04just to round off the day?
34:05Oh, I don't know any Batman jokes. Go for it.
34:07What did Batman say to Robin before he got in the car?
34:10What did Batman say to Robin before he got in the car?
34:13Robin, get in the car.
34:18Welcome back, Colin!
