00:00Thank you so much for joining us.
00:30Welcome with our people, a half an hour show live from Paris.
00:45Beautiful day here, a beautiful afternoon, a little bit hot, 25 degrees Celsius.
00:50A lot of things to talk about today.
00:53First it was the first world record, it was breaking this afternoon.
00:58New sport, new discipline started to play.
01:01Later we are going to talk about tomorrow with Charlie Monteiro about the big day.
01:06It's going to be the opening ceremony and it's going to be on the river and also it's
01:12going to be with us.
01:14He's right now, Eduardo Regonesi.
01:18Eduardo is in different places every day and now where are you exactly, Eduardo?
01:26Good evening Carlos, good evening everybody at home watching us.
01:30We are very close to the Eiffel Tower where the opening ceremony is going to finish tomorrow.
01:35Just so you know, we always try to find new places to go with our cameraman Charlie.
01:40We say let's find a beautiful spot to do this live broadcast to you guys.
01:45Luckily for us, most of the places in Paris, almost all of Paris is very very beautiful.
01:49So as you can see, right behind me we are in a square.
01:52A lot of people walking around, you don't see too many cars, just a couple of cars because
01:56everything is closed off.
01:57We've been talking about this all week, how it's been closed, waiting for the opening
02:02ceremony which is going to happen tomorrow and of course we will be there.
02:06A lot of sports happening today, four more disciplines started today and they are still
02:11going on right now and we are going to bring you the latest results just in a bit.
02:15Carlos, I will be back with you in just a couple of minutes.
02:20Absolutely Eduardo, a big day today.
02:23They call it here in Paris minus one.
02:25Why is it minus one?
02:27Because tomorrow is number one, it's the first opening of this game where we are going to
02:33see all the delegation, the 10,500 athletes, they are going to come down the same ribs
02:40that's behind me.
02:42And this Saturday, one day after the opening ceremony, we are going to see who wins the
02:49first medal.
02:51But to put in context what's going on with the medals, let's start with the countries
02:58that have the chance to receive the most awards in these Olympics.
03:04Of course, the most important delegation we have here are from first USA, second France,
03:11but let's talk about the goal first with our people.
03:16That's going to be the last Olympics were in Tokyo 2020.
03:20Brazil won a 37 gold, but of course, the most important is Cuba is the number one in
03:30our region.
03:31As you can see on this graphic, then like I said, Brazil, then Argentina, Mexico.
03:38What we are seeing maybe is a little bit confusing the graphic, but pay attention to the first
03:42one, the first column.
03:45The first column is the gold medals.
03:48You see at the end, the last column is the one, the total, bronze and silver.
03:55Then let's go to the next graphic, Ecuador is one of the countries that won two medals,
04:02Chile, Puerto Rico, and Uruguay, Peru, Costa Rica, Granada, Panama, Bermuda, and Suriname.
04:13They closed three countries that reached bronze, the Disintegrated Federation of the
04:19West Indies, Barbados, and Guyana.
04:23We hope that Bolivia, Honduras, Nicaragua, Belize, and Dominican Republic that have no
04:31medals, they can leave Paris with a medal.
04:37We hope so, and we are going to be paying attention to all our athletes because we want
04:42them to win, and we hope they are going to win.
04:46Let's go back to Eduardo.
04:51I like Eduardo when you were saying, you point your camera to anywhere in the city, and you
04:55are going to have a beautiful picture.
04:59That's what I was telling today, Charlie, Montero is such a beautiful city.
05:04It's a city that's moving along.
05:08I see more people today than I saw since I came here to Paris.
05:13You have the same impression.
05:14I can see much more life on the street than on Monday when we came here to Paris.
05:20Absolutely, Carlos.
05:23Today it's starting to look like an Olympic city.
05:27There's a lot of people in the street.
05:29There's a lot of people with flags from different countries.
05:32So yes, the vibe is much, much different when we got here.
05:34We got here last Saturday, I got here last Saturday, and it seemed like a dead city at
05:39the beginning.
05:40We were wondering, I told them, if nobody told me there were Olympic Games, we wouldn't
05:44believe it because the streets were very, very empty.
05:47Of course, this is because of the barricades, because the streets are closed off.
05:51But now people are walking around, people are, as you see, people are crossing the street,
05:55a lot of people in the street, and tomorrow there's going to be a lot more people.
06:00600,000 people are expected to watch the opening ceremony live across the Sena River.
06:06But let's talk sports, shall we, Carlos?
06:08Let's talk about the first record that was held today in archery.
06:12Lim Shion from Korea, she got a world record with 6.94.
06:18She took the first place today, with her countryman taking second as well.
06:24In the men's, we were expecting Hugo Franco from Cuba.
06:27We were all expecting to see how he will do in his first Olympic Games.
06:31He came to France with a lot of hope of winning because he's been doing very well in past
06:37events.
06:38Sadly for us, sadly for the Latin American countries, he got only the 21st position.
06:44He doesn't make it.
06:46The best athlete from Latin America was Matias Grande from Mexico, who finished 11th, and
06:54Hugo Franco, he finished 21st, as we told you before.
06:58Let's talk about handball.
06:59Brazil defeated Spain 21-18, Netherlands defeated Angola, South Korea defeated Germany, good
07:04day for South Korea, and Denmark defeated Slovenia.
07:08Right now, Hungary is playing France, and Norway is playing Sweden.
07:12Today we have more action in football.
07:14It's the women's turn.
07:15Canada will be playing New Zealand, Spain will play Japan, Nigeria and Brazil, one of
07:21our countries.
07:22Brazil is going to play Nigeria, Germany will play Australia, USA, Zambia, and France will
07:28play Colombia.
07:29We'll keep an eye on that match as well.
07:32Let's talk a little bit about rugby.
07:34You were talking about it earlier.
07:36We were talking about rugby off camera, second day, and it's already day of definitions.
07:41As we said, rugby seven is much, much shorter, so today we have the first qualifiers for
07:46the next round.
07:48Argentina made it through.
07:49Sadly, Uruguay does not make it.
07:51Uruguay is going to be playing on later tonight to set the ninth to twelfth spot.
07:57All the countries that don't make it to the second round, they play today to see who ends
08:01in ninth, tenth, eleventh, and twelfth spot, respectively.
08:05Argentina made it to the quarterfinals.
08:07They will be playing France, they host France.
08:09Repeat from the World Cup final last year, Argentina against France, New Zealand against
08:13South Africa, Fiji versus Ireland, Australia versus USA.
08:19That's for sports today.
08:20Tomorrow, we only have shooting.
08:22Shooting is not in Paris.
08:24It's about an hour and a half away from here.
08:26That's early in the morning, because later on, everything is going to be focused on the
08:30opening ceremony, which, as we said, is going to be on the Seine River.
08:34We will be there.
08:35We will bring you all the details of what this opening ceremony, this historical opening
08:40ceremony is going to be here in France.
08:43That is it for now.
08:44I think, Carlos, we will talk again just in a couple of minutes.
08:47I will continue admiring this beautiful view of Paris in the meantime.
08:51Enjoy it, Eduardo, and, of course, we are all talking today also about what's happened
08:58yesterday with Argentina, Argentina-Morocco, a lot of controversy, so that is so important
09:05today.
09:06The game is going to be played very soon in Rugby 7, Argentina-France.
09:11The French people don't like Argentina after what happened in the World Cup, and they showed
09:15that in the stadium.
09:16Let's see what's going to happen, but thank you, Eduardo, we'll be back with you in a
09:21second.
09:22Belarus and Russia, they are not allowed to play in these games for what's going on in
09:31Ukraine, but it's not the first time that the politics is involved in those games.
09:37In 1980, that was when Russia boycotted the Olympic Games.
09:42They didn't participate.
09:43Let's see a story about that.
09:44The Soviet Union in 1979 has sent troops to Afghanistan in support of the government installed
09:55there.
09:56President Jimmy Carter was seeking reelection in his campaign against the Republican Ronald
10:01Reagan and placed his ship on Afghanistan.
10:03The U.S. government gave the then Soviet Union a one-month ultimatum to withdraw its troops.
10:10The USSR did not respond in the affirmative way, and the United States declined the invitation
10:16and pushed for a boycott of the Moscow Olympics.
10:19International Sports Federation protested the U.S. pressure.
10:22They argued that the victims would end up being the athletes themselves.
10:26U.S. hypocrisy overlooked its military intervention.
10:30After World War II, U.S. troops invaded Guatemala in 1954, Cuba in 1961, and the Dominican Republic
10:38in 1965, as well as supporting all South American dictatorship during the so-called
10:44counter-plans.
10:45However, 66 countries serving Washington dictates joined the boycott.
10:50The U.S. president threatened to revoke the passport of any of his athletes who tried
10:55to reach Moscow.
10:56In some of the allied countries, those who disobeyed government orders and decided to
11:01attend marched without their national flag and competed under the Olympic banner.
11:06When they won gold, the notes of the Olympic hymn were played.
11:10Nearly 1,000 athletes participated, representing 81 countries out of the 143 recognized by
11:18the International Olympic Committee at the time.
11:21The mayor of Montreal, the previous host city, Jean Dupreux, was unable to attend the inauguration.
11:27Although tainted by the political decision and by the absence of outstanding athletes,
11:33the game went off with a major setback.
11:36Many disciplines had their best exponents, and 36 world records, 74 Olympic records,
11:42and hundreds of continental and national records were broken.
11:46The closing ceremony at Lenin Stadium changed Olympic history forever in front of more than
11:53100,000 people.
11:54Instead of flying the American flag, an insignia of the city of Los Angeles was ready to start
12:00the road to the 1984 Games.
12:06If it's possible, let's go back to Eduardo Regonesi.
12:13Eduardo, you are in a beautiful place.
12:15You are ready to drink a coffee in those beautiful cafes that we see on the street of Paris.
12:21But I have one more question.
12:23We were talking about yesterday the Dominican Republic that started in football.
12:28I wonder how many Caribbean countries are playing in these Olympics, and do you have
12:33a chance to talk to any of the delegations?
12:37Yes, Carlos.
12:40Indeed, we were talking about beautiful places, how beautiful France is.
12:45There's another beautiful island in the Caribbean, Aruba.
12:47I don't know if you guys have been there.
12:49I had the pleasure of being there, just working, not on vacation, unfortunately.
12:53But it's a very small island off the coast of Venezuela, one of the Caribbean countries
12:58that are participating in the Olympics.
13:01And we were at the Olympic Village.
13:02We got a chance to talk to some of the athletes of the Aruban team.
13:07Just so you have an idea, Aruba has 100,000 population around there,
13:12and they have six athletes here in the Olympics.
13:15That's a large percentage, a big ratio of population versus athletes,
13:20and they don't have one.
13:21They have two swimmers, and we were able to talk to them today
13:24about what they expect on these Olympic Games.
13:33What do you think about the Caribbean region?
13:47Well, I think the Caribbean region has been upcoming in swimming
13:52and also in other sports.
13:54I think there's a few guys that have been, let's say, reaching the next levels in swimming.
14:02There's one from Cayman Islands, one from Trinidad, and hopefully me as well.
14:07We can represent our Caribbean countries in the highest level of swimming.
14:13But then also I think all other sports I've seen,
14:16I think many delegations have been growing since Rio, I know.
14:20And so I think it's a good thing that we can be represented at the Games.
14:25I feel like us as the Caribbean have come really far seeing even four years ago,
14:31because now, just to name a few swimmers, I know Mikel is one of the big swimmers now,
14:36Dylan Carter, Jordan Crooks.
14:38So I feel like us as the Caribbean, being as little as we are,
14:41we've come so far in the athletic world.
14:44There's something different that they did during these Games.
14:47It was a little copied from the Oceania continent, because the Pan-American zone,
14:53so they did a joint allotment program.
14:56That means 16 small countries or islands like us that would not have a medical space,
15:01that would not have an operational meeting room.
15:04And they gathered these 16 small islands together in one building,
15:08and at the bottom we do have a shared office.
15:11We have a place where we meet.
15:13So then we work there and we have often contact with all the other small islands,
15:18you know, ask about the athletes, how they are managing.
15:21So it is nice that they adapted this concept that was originally from Oceania,
15:26and we see Oceania here again.
15:28So I think it's very nice and it's a good concept so that the small islands
15:32can also have the medical room, the meeting room, and just an area to share.
15:36There we heard from the representative from Aruba talking about the camaraderie
15:41that happens between the Caribbean countries.
15:43They're small nations and they stick together, they train together,
15:47and they get to share experience with other Caribbean nations.
15:50That is it for now, Carlos.
15:52We will be back tomorrow, of course, with more details,
15:55with more action in the Sports in Paris 2024.
16:06Eduardo, thank you very much.
16:08I have the chance to be in Aruba and it's for me one of the most beautiful islands of the Caribbean.
16:13Thank you, Eduardo. We'll be back with you at any minute.
16:17Now let's talk about legends.
16:19Let's talk about people of all people who did great in the Olympics.
16:24Today we are going to talk about Richard Carapaz.
16:28Richard is from Ecuador.
16:30He trains in Colombia and he did absolutely everything you can do in cycling.
16:37With his bicycle, he flew all over the place.
16:41If you don't know Richard, let's see the story.
16:50Ecuadorian cyclist Richard Carapaz won the Olympic gold in road cycling discipline in the Tokyo 2020 Games.
16:59His average speed in the race was 38 km per hour.
17:05Carapaz would take 19 and a half hours to get from Bogotá to Quito at this speed.
17:14The liberator Dimón Bolívar took a few weeks longer making that same journey on horseback
17:19to visit his love wife, Manuelita Sáenz.
17:23It is one more feat of our people.
17:29He's really a superstar.
17:31You know the last time that Paris was host of the Olympics was 100 years ago.
17:38Today is the third time this Olympics came.
17:41You know who won on football 100 years ago? Uruguay.
17:46Let's see the story.
17:51To honor the promise to take his team to Paris 2024,
17:55Atilio Naranjo, president of the Uruguayan Football Association, mortgaged his home.
18:00But the adventure of the first South American representative in the Olympic football
18:05also involved a plan signed by Numa Pesquera, president of the national club.
18:11The blue team left for France in third-class cabins without coach or physical trainer.
18:16The players took the responsibility under the tutelage of their captain, José Nazário.
18:23The motivation was higher because before the games began,
18:27the FIFA congress in Paris took over the organization of the Olympic football tournaments
18:32and they assumed as world champions.
18:35Without a single reference for their rivals,
18:38they went to the field to demonstrate the Rioplatense football played flush with the ground
18:44with dominated ball which kept them on the top of South America.
18:48In the debut, they crushed Yugoslavia 7-0 and then Category 3-0 over the US.
18:55In the quarter-finals, they were in front of the most fierce rivals, the locals.
19:00France, the favorite of all to seal 5-1 that surprised all Europe.
19:06The semi-final was a great challenge with the Netherlands,
19:09but in the complement, Pedro Cea and Héctor Scarone turned it around.
19:14In the final against Switzerland on June 9,
19:16more than 40,000 people parched the Columbus Stadium on June 9.
19:21Pedro Petrone, Pedro Cea and Ángel Romano sentenced the 3-0 to state
19:27with the gold medal and the title First World Football Champion.
19:31The players tore the perimeter of the field to celebrate
19:34as in defeat with 20 goals in favor and only 2 against.
19:38Since then and forever, that celebration will be called Olympic Lab.
19:45The spirit of people from Uruguay.
19:48Tomorrow is the big day, the opening day.
19:51Where is it going to be?
19:53Charlie Montero is on the scene.
19:56We are going to see all the athletes go down the river.
20:03Hi Carlos, how are you?
20:05The games have officially begun,
20:07but we are already thinking about the opening ceremony here in France on Friday.
20:10Instead of a stadium, there will be 10,500 athletes floating down this river,
20:18a 6km route to get all the way down to the Eiffel Tower.
20:22If you want to, we go around here a little bit and talk with some people
20:25to see what their thoughts are on the games.
20:28I think it's cool, because I'm not a big fan of sports,
20:33but I like some.
20:35And I think the style of what we're getting is very cool.
20:39I think my favorite game is usually basketball and soccer,
20:45the group games.
20:47For China, I think a lot of people came and we got a lot of medals.
20:52I think we are supporting our country.
21:03Thank you very much. See you all tomorrow.
