Let's play video of Torin's Passage, a 1995 point and click adventure game which was created by Al Lowe. This week's episode takes us to the world of Pergola where we meet the Pergolians while we meet the Princess of Escarpa then discover our next Phenocryst.

Question of the Day:
How long did it take you to figure out the musical puzzles at the end of the Pergola level?

Torins's Passage Videogame © Sierra/ Activision Blizzard

Torin is on the hunt attempting to track down and find an evil Sorceress called Lycentia who he believes is responsible for the abduction of his parents from the Lands Above. Torin learns about Lena, the King and Queen of Escarpa's daughter who has gone missing as well.

Torins Passage is one of my all time favourite games which I first played when I was probably about five or six years old. It's a point and click adventure game featuring a number of worlds within one another as part of a nested planet where humans can travel between levels of the planet through the use of a Phenocryst chamber.

Torin's Passage is a game created by Al Lowe who also designed other popular titles such as Leisure Suit Larry and was also involved with the King's Quest game series.

I've always loved playing Torin's Passage since it was first relased and it has a special place in my videogame collection as being one of the first games that got me into gaming in the first place. It's probably one of the first games I played bought on CD by my Dad alongside other classics such as Digby the Dog, Broken Sword and the King's Quest.

00:00Hello and welcome back to Tauren's Passage. Today we're playing Chapter 3, Pergola.
00:30Chapter 3, Pergola.
01:00Chapter 3, Pergola.
01:30Chapter 3, Pergola.
02:00Okay, we seem to have landed ourselves in a sticky situation. How do we get rid of this one?
02:30Okay, we seem to have landed ourselves in a sticky situation. How do we get rid of this one?
03:00There.
03:05On behalf of all Pergolans everywhere, I would like to thank you, Giant, for saving the life of Fairmont.
03:12Oh, that's alright.
03:15Ow! No! Quit it! Too loud! Softer! Knock it off!
03:20Oh, sorry. I mean, okay.
03:25You seem to be a kinder, gentler Giant, not like some Giants we know. I wonder if you could help us with a problem.
03:33But of course. You need some logs moved? Rocks realigned?
03:38Villages trampled?
03:40Much worse. We recently captured another Giant, but very different from you. This one will not cooperate at all.
03:49What can I do?
03:51Perhaps if you talked with it.
03:54Well, okay. But are you sure I'll be safe?
03:58Follow me.
04:00Aha! He's really cool. I like that character. He's fun.
04:04Let's see where he can take us.
04:07Oh, look at him run.
04:10Aha! We found Lina.
04:40You're with them, aren't you? Get away from me!
04:47Let's show her the locket from her mum and dad.
04:50Hey, you're Lina, aren't you? I just came from your homeland. I met your mother and father.
04:57You did? Escarpa? My parents? Oh, how I wish I had listened to them. I wouldn't be in this mess.
05:08They told me to give you this.
05:10Oh, look! That is my dear sweet father. And I. Oh, how I miss them. Maybe you are from Escarpa, but you're so tall. Who are you, anyway?
05:27My name is Torrin, but I'm not from Escarpa. I'm from the lands above.
05:33Torrin of the lands above. Do you promise not to harm me?
05:39I swear. At present, I can think of nothing worse.
05:44All right, then. Quick, cut me loose.
05:47Well, um, hmm.
05:50Hurry, before they stop you.
05:52Yeah, uh, I can't. I'll have to try to break each little thread, I suppose.
05:59Why? Use your knife.
06:02That's just it. I didn't bring a knife. Some hero I am. Well, hold still. Here goes.
06:10Then I'll tell you a little secret. All this time, I've had a knife hidden in my boot, but they tied me up before I regained consciousness.
06:21The dialogue's really cheesy.
06:32Now, hold still. I wouldn't want to cut you.
06:44Oh, thank you, Torrin. That was horrible.
06:49What's that strange eyeball thing in her head? That's a bit off-putting.
06:55Here. Here's your locket.
07:03Oh, Boogle. Here, let me help you up.
07:10Oh, wait. Look at your arms. You're bleeding.
07:15What? Oh, uh, I'm okay. I dropped a long ways through the trees before I landed on this soft loam.
07:23I must have, uh, you know, caught some branches on the way down. It's nothing.
07:28Nonsense. Come over here. I'm sure I heard a stream this way.
07:33Everyone in Escarpa said we should meet, but I never dared dream we really would.
07:39Everyone else was so short and hairy. I was always the ugly duckling. Too tall, too thin, hair only on top.
07:49But with you, I feel, I don't know, somehow normal.
07:55Oh, I think you're anything but normal.
07:58What? Torrin!
08:01Huh? No, no, what I meant was, uh, you're far above normal. You're, you're beautiful. Wonderful.
08:09Oh, Torrin. But my parents must be worried sick.
08:13Well, yeah, they are. They really want you to return home. And my parents, they're still in danger.
08:20I must go back.
08:22I must go on.
08:24You're right.
08:26I must go back.
08:28I must go on.
08:30I must go back.
08:32I must go on.
08:34I must go back.
08:36I must go on.
08:39But will I see you again?
08:42You must.
08:45Excuse me, you two. Will you be staying for dinner? If so, I'd better send out several hunting parties.
08:53No, we've got to leave immediately. We have to begin our search for a phoenicrist.
08:59Oh, no need. I know right where one is, but it's pretty far away.
09:05I can't believe it. Does it work?
09:08Well, it might. You see, it hasn't been used in some time.
09:13Somehow, I could have guessed that. Let's go, Lena.
09:18Okay, we're doing really well here. We've got a phoenicrist, and we know where to find it.
09:22So let's go and see if we can get past the next puzzle. Let's try it.
09:28Attention, everyone. This is Torrin and his friend, Lena.
09:33Please give him your attention. They're all yours.
09:38But what do I do?
09:40Well, that's the problem. No one knows. The phoenicrist hasn't been used in generations.
09:47Legend has it that when the Ostiarys find perfect harmony, the worlds will open unto them.
09:54But even when wearing these ancient, sacred robes, they cannot find the way themselves.
09:59Can you help them?
10:01Oh, boy.
10:05So we've got three Wigreen... Oh, no, there's actually four Wigreen hats.
10:09Oh, well, that's really confusing.
10:11So, okay, we've got a puzzle. There's like a star shape and a number of little creatures.
10:20I don't know what they're called again. Pergolins.
10:23It's got something to do with colours, because I can see they've got different colours of robes,
10:27different colours of clothing they're wearing, and they've got different colours on their arms.
10:40I'm thinking it's got something to do with positioning them in the right place, so let's try moving some of them.
10:50I thought it was going to be like three, so three reds, but that doesn't work.
10:54It's something different.
10:57What else have they got in common?
11:00Red bibs is four.
11:04Three, four. Four's the number here, definitely. One, two, three, four.
11:11This is a line. One, two, three, four. There's a line. So there's one, two, three, four.
11:18One, two, three, four.
11:25Okay, you step into the centre.
11:37Okay, just a confused thing. Somebody's gone in the centre.
11:44And you take his place.
11:48Okay, so we're getting a general feel of how these guys and females are moving around on the star.
12:03Oh, what was that?
12:08That guy in her place.
12:11Um...
12:15She can move there, and I want you to move there.
12:26Let's move her and move him to the bottom.
12:35They're grumpy.
12:41Let's move that one, I think.
12:44Shall we click on that one?
12:46Yeah, let's go for that.
12:49Alright, so she's moving there.
12:53That one.
12:57And yeah, okay.
13:01Oh no, this is not going to work.
13:05I've done something wrong. This is not working.
13:11This puzzle used to drive me mad when I was younger. Crazy, and it still does today.
13:18I don't get this at all.
13:24Now wait, you go back. Yellows.
13:29Greens, yellows, reds.
13:34You go there. You swap.
13:38Oh my god, what was that?
13:42Wait a minute, wait a minute.
13:44Yeah, you go there. That's blue.
14:00Cool.
14:08I am definitely saving.
14:15Okay, what's this?
14:27Hmm, but what?
14:31Okay, I'm not sure about this one.
14:34Again, it looks like we've got to put them in a particular order.
14:38I'm not sure what order.
14:42Some of them have got yellow colour, some of them have got green hoods.
14:45We've got, like, pink clothing.
14:49And it looks like they're supposed to go in a kind of...
14:55...up and down, sort of like musical scales...
14:59...kind of formation, so we could try that.
15:14I don't understand...
15:17...at all, what's going on here.
15:30I am not understanding what's going on here.
15:40Okay, I'm going to try moving them opposite sides.
15:51They move really fast, it's funny.
15:59What is going on?
16:20Oh my goodness!
16:22Okay.
16:29Okay.
16:52Okay.
17:22Okay.
17:25Okay.
17:28Okay.
17:31Okay.
17:35Okay.
17:38Okay.
17:41Okay.
17:45Okay.
17:48Okay.
17:50Okay.
17:53Okay.
17:56Okay.
17:59Okay.
18:02Okay.
18:05Okay.
18:08Okay.
18:11Okay.
18:14Yay, we've done it!
18:17Ah, that's it!
18:19The pattern was five ascending notes leading to the second nested planet.
18:23So that phenocryst goes back to Escarpa.
18:30Ah, I see. Okay.
18:39Clearly he's high, so...
18:42Okay, clearly he's high, so...
19:13Okay.
19:16Okay.
19:18Okay.
19:20Okay.
19:22Okay.
19:24Okay.
19:28Okay.
19:30Okay.
19:34Okay.
19:36Okay.
19:38Okay.
19:40Okay.
19:44Okay.
19:50Okay.
19:53Okay.
19:56Okay.
19:58Okay.
20:01Okay.
20:03Okay.
20:06Okay.
20:09Okay.
20:12Okay.
20:15Okay.
20:18Okay.
20:21Okay.
20:24Okay.
20:27Okay.
20:30Okay.
20:34Okay.
20:37Okay.
20:40Okay.
20:43Okay.
20:46Okay.
20:55Oh, Torrin, I knew you could do it!
20:58You did?
21:00But, now what?
21:02Oh, this part I know. Stand over here. I'll throw enough of this powder for both of us, and off we'll go.
21:10Don't forget me, Torrin.
21:12I couldn't, Lina.
21:14Be careful. This licentious sounds dangerous.
21:17I will. Now, close your eyes.
21:21They are closed.
21:27Save enough powder for a trip to Escarpa.
21:30I promise. I'll see you soon, Lina. Somehow.
21:35Goodbye, Torrin. And goodbye, Boogle.
22:00To be continued...
