00:00Let's go, game four.
00:16Dallas, let's do this.
00:19Gerard Blakely, Bobby Manning, John Zanis here, Garden Report pregame edition, roughly
00:25what?
00:26What are we?
00:27Two and a half hours.
00:28Two and a half hours to tip off, lots of stuff going on already and we'll get into it in
00:32a little bit.
00:33We saw Chris Hapsporzingis outside, not outside, down on the court like ten minutes ago just
00:40walked off with trainers.
00:41He kind of went through his goal around here.
00:44They might announce while we're on the air here whether or not he's a go.
00:48We'll get into that, we'll get into our predictions, we'll get into our series MVP and Bobby's
00:51going to defend his Tatum stance.
00:54I still feel good about it.
00:55We'll get there, we'll get there.
00:56Oh boy.
00:57I still feel good about it.
00:58We'll see.
00:59In a four game series, you really got to have, he's got to put up a monster tonight but we'll
01:02see.
01:03And whether or not the Mavericks are finished.
01:06But let's start with the news of the day so far and again, with yesterday, Porzingis,
01:11we saw him come out, practice, he didn't talk to the media and he looked like he was doing
01:17stuff.
01:18He wasn't good to go for the last game.
01:21Medical staff deemed that he didn't go through all of his check marks.
01:24We're not doctors but we saw him out here today and I don't know, Ahmed, if you have
01:28the video and you can roll it, you can see what's going on with him.
01:31He's kind of going through the motions.
01:32He looks like a guy who's definitely trying to play.
01:35He's got braces on both ankles but he's going through his motions.
01:38He's doing his little jump stops and jumping off one foot, jumping off the other and he's
01:43kind of going through the type of motions you'd think that he would have to do in a
01:48game if he was going to be effective.
01:49So is he playing or not playing?
01:51What do you think?
01:52No.
01:53He's not going to play.
01:55I don't know what to expect from him but I just think that the Celtics are looking at
01:57the risk-reward of throwing him out there and they're thinking, we probably don't need
02:02him to win this game.
02:03We could probably win this game by 8 or 10 points without him and maybe by 15 or 20 with
02:07him.
02:08And I just think there's too high a risk factor in throwing him out there now, particularly
02:11in a situation where, if we're being honest and candid, you're playing with house money
02:15and as long as Luke is out on the floor, the worst defender, you've got a chance to win
02:19this game big time.
02:20He's got to defend, Bobby.
02:21Yeah, he's got to defend.
02:22He can't!
02:23It might be too late.
02:24He needed to defend to this point.
02:25He needs to defend his honor now at the very least because he's under attack.
02:26Windy killed him.
02:27And since then, he's been in kind of like sad puppy dog, like puppy dog got swatted
02:28for making a mess on the carpet mode, like apologetic yesterday.
02:29But Luke is a different guy.
02:30Before we get to Luke, you're leaning K.P. plays.
02:31I think he plays.
02:32I don't love it though because we've talked about that letdown effect.
02:33If a guy like that goes out there and just doesn't look good and they have to pull him
02:34back.
02:35I think he plays.
02:36I don't love it though because we've talked about that letdown effect.
02:37If a guy like that goes out there and just doesn't look good and they have to pull him
02:38back.
02:39I think he plays.
02:40I think he plays.
02:41I don't love it though because we've talked about that letdown effect.
02:42If a guy like that goes out there and just doesn't look good and they have to pull him

18:59And so they can come out, catch fire, ride a wave, win this game.
19:01And then who knows?
19:02It's the whole Kevin Millar don't let us win one.
19:04I don't know if they have the fight in them to do it?
19:07They don't.
19:08I'm dubious.
19:09I mean, the one thing I keep coming back, when I look at this team, is the fact, for
19:13the most part, they came together five months ago.
19:15And so there is still this level of unfamiliarity they have with each other, and that's something
19:20that, through training camp and a full season together, you can get better and build up
19:24the kind of tight bonds that you have to have when you get to the stage.
19:27you get to the stage.
19:28The Celtics are just a closer team, they're a more talented team, they had a home court
19:32advantage.
19:33When you go down all the boxes that you'd want to check going into the finals, I don't
19:36know if there's anything other than the fact that Luka plays for Dallas that they can look
19:40at and say, that's a positive for us.
19:42But even with that, the flip side, he's a walking easy pass defensively, and the Celtics
19:47have wisely taken advantage of that.
19:49They swing the ball around to about 10 seconds on the shot clock, find Luka, get to whoever
19:53Luka's guarding, buck it, and it'll last five seconds on the shot clock.
19:56You talked a little bit about the togetherness too in this moment, you don't see them out
20:00there together.
20:01The last two days, the practice and the shoot around, Celtics en masse, all coming out together,
20:06like laughing, smiling.
20:07Tatum's on the sideline, dancing and stuff.
20:10But the togetherness is crazy, more than we've seen, and again, I know we've gotten crap
20:14on the show for being like, why is Tatum on the bike and why don't they talk to each other?
20:18But now, in the reverse, when you're seeing these guys hug at the end of the game, them
20:22talking, the team totally tight, not off doing their own thing and then coming together
20:28just to play the game, they really, it's like 2001 Patriots sort of vibe, like everybody
20:32coming out onto the field at the same time, which is better, it's cooler, and like, it's
20:38the team aspect of it, is the most, like, is the thing I'm going to take away from this
20:43when it's all said and done, is like, how they came together as a team in a way that,
20:48and not to say we didn't expect, they've been doing it all year, but you just had to see
20:52it on this stage, and like, the buy-in is insane, it's not, there's always lip service,
20:57we're close, we're this, we're that, by, not the Celtics, by all teams, all franchises
21:02say this, we've got to play Hornets basketball, what the hell is Hornets basketball, everyone
21:06thinks there's a brand of their basketball that they have to, but this is legit what
21:11you would think Celtics basketball would be, unselfish, you know, very much a salute to
21:16some of the great teams of past years, coming together, we've got one goal in mind, the
21:21rest doesn't matter, we don't care, and I actually believe they believe it now, and
21:25you can see it.
21:26Compared to last year's Celtics too, because they almost did pull off the 0-3, different
21:30circumstances again, a worse team they were going against, but you had the don't let us
21:35get one, you had a sign of togetherness, you actually saw them rally in that next game
21:39and play great, Dallas can certainly do that here tonight, and maybe make you believe a
21:44little bit, but to this point, the messaging hasn't been there.
21:46I don't think they've believed, I mean, before you can actually get, I don't know,
21:51get us and others to believe, you've got to believe, and there's nothing that they
21:54have said in the last 24-48 hours that makes me believe that they think they can win this
21:58year.
21:59I haven't heard one person say, we can't break apart, we've got to come together, we've got
22:01to, we can.
22:02No, they're talking about how this is a great learning experience for us to build on, and
22:06we've only been together five months, and that wasn't me, that was literally one of
22:09the players bringing up the fact that they've been together for such a short period of time.
22:13It's almost like that dose of reality, it's like, oh, we're in the NBA Finals, and we're
22:20about to be done, because they're just so much better than us right now.
22:24That's the thing, it's almost like a boxing match, right?
22:26You go out there, and, you know, you think you've got a good shot, then you get punched
22:29in the mouth, and you're like, that hurt, and then you can't land any punches, and you
22:33keep getting hit, and a couple rounds in, you're like, I don't, I don't, I don't, I
22:37can't win this.
22:38I don't know how long this is going to go.
22:39I don't want to be in this anymore.
22:40I'm not saying they're completely tapped out yet, I think they're going to come out with
22:43good energy with their crowd again tonight, and again, if the shots are falling as they
22:46were in game three, you never know how it's going to go, but, I can't remember, you know,
22:54but some, maybe you sent this to me or whatever, but I do believe it.
22:59They're going to only, if you put them out early, I don't know that they come back, because
23:05they're home, and if they're going to board a flight right now, they'd rather it be to
23:09Cancun than back to Boston, and don't give them a reason, don't give them life here.
23:16The Celtics have definitely grown past the point where we're like, oh, they're going
23:19to come out flat and lazy, they haven't, not in these finals, but extra, extra emphasis
23:24tonight on executing the game plan, doing everything you have to do, and don't give
23:30them early life, because that'll keep them in the game a little bit longer.
23:33And even if they do get some early life, I'm not going to overreact, because I think it's
23:37just going to take one run, one push ahead of them, one comeback to end it.
23:41I think there's going to be many different moments in this game that you can make Dallas
23:45roll over.
23:46I don't have a high amount of faith in them, which is why I'm kind of confused again where
23:49the line's at.
23:50That always confuses me in some of these circumstances.
23:52I think there's a lot of confidence that Luka is going to have one of those 40, 50 point
23:56games, but the problem is that the Celtics have so many ways to make him work so much
24:01harder defensively.
24:02I thought, when you look back at the Minnesota series, I thought that was the biggest mistake
24:05they made.
24:06They did not make him work hard enough as a defender.
24:07The Celtics, that's literally at the top of their wish list of things to do, it has to
24:12be making Luka's ass work defensively.
24:15And it's worked to a charm.
24:16I've seen a lot of people going back to kind of, in retrospect, critical of Minnesota.
24:20They'd be like, Dallas was a tough matchup for them, and then they look at it and they're
24:23like, why didn't they do more of this?
24:26And they had the personnel to do that.
24:27Thankfully they didn't, because Minnesota was a tougher matchup.
24:29That would have been a problem.
24:30I don't want to get into that, because I know national media's going to have those narratives
24:36of like, well, you know, matchups and they were an easy path, and blah blah blah.
24:40I do think after this is over, and it could be over tonight, I think everybody out there
24:45who, because none of us really fully understood the love for the Mavs here, I didn't get it.
24:50I think they're fine.
24:51I thought they were a full level below.
24:53But we've got to stop talking about how the Celtics were the better team in this series,
24:57and start talking about how the Celtics were the best team.
25:00They're the best team.
25:01They've been the best team all year.
25:03And it's probably time for people to give them their flowers in that regard.
25:07You look at the two things they did in this series.
25:09Making excuses.
25:10Luka was this, and he wasn't.
25:11It's not the other guys.
25:13It's the Celtics.
25:14They're making Luka bad.
25:17They're making life hard on Kyrie.
25:19They're erasing guys who had big series against Minnesota or other teams, and making them
25:25completely obsolete.
25:26You know, the Gafford and the Joe.
25:29They've taken everything away.
25:30It's not that Dallas all of a sudden forgot how to play.
25:32The Celtics have done this to them.
25:34Again, back to that straightforward game plan.
25:36Find the matchups, attack them on offense, on defense, guard the best way possible, and
25:42take away the best shots.
25:43And they've done that methodically in this series.
25:45Dallas only has 14 corner threes the entire series.
25:48That's unreal.
25:49Yeah.
25:50Crazy.
25:51And a few came late too in that 20-2 kind of run where they were like, oh, threes are
25:54pretty good.
25:55And they can do that against any team, really.
25:57Now Denver would have given them issues.
25:59Minnesota would have given them some challenges.
26:01But the way the Celtics have played in a vacuum in this series, you would have felt
26:04pretty good about them beating anybody here.
26:06You would have felt good.
26:07But at this point, three games into it, I don't think they'd be up 3-0.
26:11I think they'd be up 2-1 against almost every other team in the West with a chance that
26:15team would have of tying it up tonight.
26:17But the thing about the Celtics is that they have just mastered in doing the most basic
26:23fundamental things.
26:24We're going to defend.
26:26And if you beat one of our guys, there's going to be help.
26:28And that help is going to be long and lengthy so that whatever idea you have about passing
26:33through that extra help, it's not going to be there.
26:36How many times have we seen Luke get his man behind him and then have another defender
26:41just waiting for his ass?
26:43And then he's like, OK, do I shoot this contested shot or do I pass to PJ?
26:47I'm going to shoot this contested shot.
26:50That's exactly what the Celtics want.
26:51The rotations have been great.
26:52And Luke only has 18 assists, 15 turnovers in this series.
26:55That's exactly what you want.
26:56Yeah.
26:57And the efficiency is 27 points last game on 27 shots.
27:01That's what you want.
27:02That's what you want.
27:03You give the Celtics.
27:04You want to make him work for all of it.
27:05And he's working on both ends of the court.
27:06It's hard to score because he's got to beat a very good defender to do that.
27:10So nothing is easy.
27:11I mean, Luke has had a blow by or two for the most part.
27:15He's really having to work for everything that he gets offensively.
27:17And then defensively, they're just running him ragged.
27:19So that's great.
27:20So assuming it gets wrapped up, and whether it's tonight or in the future, it's hard to
27:24believe that the Celtics are not going to emerge from this and be a champions.
27:29We get to talk about Bobby's favorite topic, who's going to win MVP.
27:34And in a short series, each game matters a ton because, again, tonight's game is 25 percent
27:41of your total output.
27:42After you go to game five, it's 20 percent.
27:44I feel like I'm back in class.
27:46Oh, gosh.
27:47This is 25 percent of your final grade.
27:49Yeah.
27:50We need Jimmy to do the math.
27:51He's got to homeschool math on this.
27:54Sure, yeah.
27:55Look, Tatum goes out as a monster game here.
27:57I think he's in play, but he's still shooting 36 percent from the field from the finals.
28:04Those shooting numbers are what's keeping him from getting it, even though his drive
28:10and kick game in games one and two in particular changed everything.
28:13It's plus minus how good they were with him.
28:16Not as good in game three, even though he scored more.
28:19I still think it's Jalen's to lose unless Tatum does something crazy tonight.
28:23Yeah.
28:24The only reason I'm saying Tatum is obviously anticipating another good game tonight.
28:28He got going last game in a big way.
28:30The game looked a little bit more open to him.
28:32It looked like there was more space for him to find his own.
28:35The passing from there the whole way, the initiating to me, is what makes him the MVP
28:40of the series because I think the hardest thing that the Celtics have had to do, certainly
28:44Brown's point of attack defense on Luca has helped, but to quote Tatum, everybody has
28:49had to guard Luca.
28:50Everybody has had to do a little something there on that end.
28:53So that's a big benefit to Brown, and Brown's done some fantastic things on the offensive
28:57end, including that icer late in the last game.
28:59So I'm not going to sit here and say Brown doesn't have a chance or Brown isn't even
29:03the frontrunner here.
29:04The odds say he's the heavy, heavy favorite, but I anticipate the combination of voters
29:10mostly giving this award, more often than not over history, to the best player.
29:14They almost gave it to Tatum last round, even though I thought he had a much shakier
29:19case last round, and the fact that his passing has been, I think, the start of everything
29:25offensively for this team in this series.
29:27I'm just anticipating that he's going to come away with the award, and I think some of the
29:30voters are going to actually think, we gave Brown the award, round three, let's give Tatum
29:34his due for what he's done this whole run.
29:36I think that's crap.
29:39Jalen Brown has clearly been the best player on their team in this series.
29:44And you're right.
29:45Tatum's right.
29:46But it's most valuable.
29:47It's not best.
29:48Wait, let's go back to what you said Tatum mentioned.
29:51I remember him saying this, that everyone has had some of Luka, right?
29:54Who has dealt Luka the most trouble at both ends of the floor?
29:59It's Jalen freaking Brown.
30:00He's the one.
30:01Al Horford's done a good job, too.
30:02Well, all I know is when Luka filed out of the game, there was a guy named Jalen Brown
30:09who sent his ass to the bench.
30:11It was Jalen Brown who recognized he's got five fouls.
30:14He can't guard me in half-court set or if I'm in transition.
30:17I'm in transition.
30:18I'm going to force the refs to make a tough call.
30:20And he did.
30:21Jalen Brown has been the best player, the most valuable player, however, whatever semantics
30:25you want to use, Bobby.
30:27He's been that guy.
30:28And Tatum has had a great series.
30:30Jalen's just been better.
30:31I think when you look at the plus-minus, that's a big thing for me.
30:34You pull Tatum out of this series.
30:36I'm leaning more in the I-test, to be honest with you.
30:38And Jalen has smashed it.
30:39Plus 13 last game, I think, for Jalen and minus four for Tatum.
30:40So that was the first time it flipped in that regard.
30:42But I understand the Tatum plus-minus.
30:43Jalen had eight assists last game.
30:44My goodness.
30:45So much of that has to do with plus-minus is a bit shaky.
30:46So much has to do with rotations and who you're playing with.
30:47Tatum, oftentimes, the guy who plays with that second unit, playing other teams' second
30:48units.
30:49You know, sometimes that's where they kind of separate themselves at times.
30:50There's no question he's been invaluable.
30:51It's just simply, you know, he's been a great player.
30:52He's a great player.
30:53He's a great player.
30:54He's a great player.
30:55He's a great player.
30:56He's a great player.
30:57He's a great player.
30:58He's a great player.
30:59He's a great player.
31:00He's a great player.
31:01He's a great player.
31:02He's a great player.
31:12You have to argue for Tatum.
31:13You have to tell people why he's been...
31:16I mean, sometimes it's as simple as, like, what the eye test shows you, and a lot of
31:20people vote that way.
31:21So they're not going to sit there and look at every single advanced stat.
31:24They're going to be like, Jalen was a freaking monster, and Tatum was, yeah, really good
31:29in some areas, but shaky in others.
31:30And the shooting, again, you're not winning MVP when you're shooting 35 percent from
31:34the floor.
31:35Now, if Tatum has a monster game four, all bets are off.
31:40There is a recency bias when those awards are given out.
31:42I mean, if he goes out for 40, yeah, I could see them giving it to him then, but if he
31:46has a pretty typical 24, 25 points, seven rebounds, seven assists, and Jalen has 25,
31:52seven rebounds, and four or five assists, Jalen should be the one.
31:55Yeah.
32:00We are, we are not.
32:01We were looking earlier.
32:02What do we have going on right now?
32:03Sam Houser's out there.
32:05Sam, I am.
32:06Sam, I am.
32:09We talked to Sam this morning.
32:10He's got a little bit of swagger to him.
32:12Yeah.
32:13He was like, let's freaking go.
32:14I've got to give some credit to him because I didn't think he was going to play a minute
32:17in this series.
32:18I thought after the last, he shot 13 percent from the field and seven percent from three
32:22in the east.
32:23But you know what?
32:24He's come out here and had a big series.
32:25He's so freaking good that, you know, the law of averages tells you that at some point
32:29he's just going to not miss.
32:30And it felt that way in game two.
32:32When that first one went down, you're thinking like, okay, this is Sam's game.
32:35That trailing three he hit as the game was changing, shifting.
32:39Big minutes, big shot, big plays from him.
32:42And I looked at the numbers.
32:44Kim, and he's the shakiest at five for ten.
32:47But Pritchard, he's got Luka and Kyrie shooting both at 50 percent.
32:50And Al is a big one.
32:52It's like eight for 23 against Al Horford, Luka and their Al.
32:56He was like one for eight when Al was defending him in game one.
32:59So that set the tone.
33:00Switching on to Hauser, Pritchard, and Horford, not only not killing the Celtics,
33:05but actually not paying out at all for the Mavericks has been insane how those guys
33:10have held up on the switches there.
33:12Especially Hauser.
33:13I've been really pleasantly surprised.
33:15Hauser's been great.
33:16Tillman was great on switches in the second two stints for sure in game three.
33:23He had those back-to-back plays where he got a little piece of a Luka shot
33:27and then stayed with Kyrie.
33:29So, again, I mean, this is what they do.
33:32I'll say this too.
33:33It's how the team is built.
33:34It's insane.
33:35And Pritchard's been good like this all year in terms of being able to stay in front of guys.
33:39And his ISO defensive stats have been outstanding.
33:42So you can't hunt him like you could a Brunson or back in the Isaiah Thomas or this or that.
33:48He's strong.
33:50He moves his feet.
33:52And he stays in front of you all the time.
33:54It's annoying.
33:55You're not getting a step and using your body to leverage him.
33:58He's always in front of you.
33:59Excellent ladder for this.
34:00He's been insanely good.
34:02Whereas, you know, how many people had PTSD seeing him switch onto a guy at the top of the key
34:07and just seeing Steph Curry just bombing away on him?
34:11It hasn't happened.
34:12I know there's a lot of speculation if they win here.
34:15When I look at retiring, everything I've heard around them at this point is that it's not going to happen.
34:20And when you're able at his age, 38, having just turned 38, to be able to guard Luka for long stretches,
34:26I had always pissed me off even last year, round one, when people were like,
34:29oh, Al's getting killed by Trey Young.
34:31He's not retiring.
34:32Do you know something?
34:33He's not retiring.
34:34Okay, good.
34:35I don't think he's going to retire.
34:36No, no way.
34:37I didn't talk about it.
34:38Al, clearly.
34:40No, I'm saying that people are asking, would he retire?
34:43We don't care about the 30th pick, Bobby.
34:45We don't care about that.
34:46I think he's going to play as long as he possibly can.
34:49And he's going to try to repeat if they can win this tonight.
34:51We're going to keep going for a little bit, Bobby.
34:52Do you want to duck down for kid and those guys?
34:54No, I'm good.
34:55I'll stick around.
34:56You'll stick around?
34:57We're going to work Josue Pavone into the show in a little bit as well.
35:00We're going to keep it going for another 15, 20 minutes.
35:02Other topics here, I think we've covered most of it.
35:05I'm just really curious to see how this game starts.
35:08And the thing I want to see is, I'm wondering whether Jason picked up something weird.
35:13You know?
35:14He has to.
35:16From game one on, I've always said, like, I don't think they have an adjustment.
35:20I think they have to keep doing what they're doing.
35:22For real.
35:23He had seven guys in the first half last game.
35:24He did, but so little because Hardy's the first guy off the bench.
35:27He played three minutes, four minutes.
35:29Exum plays three minutes.
35:30So he tried them, but immediately he went back into his comfort zone and went to his guys.
35:34And so I think you've got to get weird.
35:37Like, you've got to say, I'm going with Exum for 30 minutes tonight.
35:40And just live or die with it because this is, you know, definition of insanity sort of stuff.
35:44Just keep repeating it over and over again.
35:46What they do, look, you can have a shooting variance game where they just go red hot.
35:52Celtics go cold and it works.
35:53You're not going to do it four times.
35:55You have to get kooky.
35:56And I'm surprised it didn't happen earlier.
35:58I think they thought coming home, let's just see if Luka and Kyrie are comfortable.
36:01And they were.
36:03But over time, the same shit that Dallas does wasn't good enough
36:07because the Celtics just keep coming and coming and coming.
36:10So what do you think would be like a Hail Mary they could potentially throw here?
36:14I just don't think.
36:15Well, go ahead, Bobby.
36:16They don't have the guys.
36:17Like, they don't have anyone you can look at and say, throw them in there, see what happens.
36:20They've tried it with Holiday.
36:21They've tried it with a Hardaway.
36:22They've tried it with Exxon.
36:24So that's not going to work.
36:25I don't even think you want to take out a wing, a big wing, from that starting lineup
36:29because then Tatum and Brown are just going to run wild on whoever you throw in there for them.
36:33Unless you just go small.
36:34You know, if you throw Lively out of them.
36:35They tried that too.
36:36I know.
36:37I don't know.
36:38I don't know.
36:39They're screwed.
36:40And neither does Kidd.
36:41And that's the problem.
36:42He doesn't.
36:43I mean, I don't know.
36:44Because every solution is worse.
36:45You're trying it, but there's no reason to think it's going to work.
36:48You're just trying it because, shit, I don't know.
36:50It's like the Celtics have this little checklist and, like, Dallas is going to do this.
36:54Okay, we'll do that.
36:56It doesn't work for Dallas.
36:57Okay, Dallas, we're going to try to go small.
36:59We've got a solution for that.
37:00It's that no matter what Dallas has tried, the Celtics have had an answer for that.
37:04And I don't see that changing tonight.
37:07I just don't.
37:08I don't either.
37:09I don't see any way Dallas wins this game.
37:11I can't imagine it.
37:12Hold on.
37:13Ahmed, are we having an audio issue?
37:17Okay.
37:19Okay, we're good.
37:20We're back on.
37:21Sorry.
37:22We've been alerted that there might be an issue.
37:23We're flying blind a little bit here because we don't have it all in front of us.
37:26So, apologies if we've kind of ducked in and out here a little bit here.
37:30But, yeah, I honestly don't know what they could do at this point that isn't a total freaking Hail Mary.
37:36Yeah, maybe you try a double big with a lively or gaffer or something wacky like that.
37:40Try to mess around with some size out there.
37:43You could throw a cleaver out there with one of those bigs and just try to play bigger.
37:47Try to really beat up Boston on the offensive glass, especially if they're going to try to play small at different points.
37:52But, again, you're going to see a Tillman out there.
37:55You're going to see a Porzingis.
37:57So, those opportunities aren't there.
37:58And that is another thing you'll give Missoula credit for last game.
38:01They could have gone a million different directions there.
38:03Cornette, you could have tried Berset going really small.
38:06They hit the right button with Xavier.
38:08And maybe it was an easy choice.
38:10I think it's a choice we all would have gone to.
38:12But it ended up being the right one.
38:13And back to Missoula and the credit you give him at this point.
38:16It's like he's hit every right button for the whole postseason.
38:18All of them.
38:19He's gotten better as the playoffs have progressed.
38:21There's no doubt about it.
38:22And he's coaching his ass off, too, even just in terms of his involvement.
38:25You know, a lot of people, during the season, it's like, is Joe going to get in there?
38:30Is he going to change it up?
38:31He's been up.
38:32He's talking.
38:33Timeouts.
38:34And the timeouts, it's almost always the offense with the timeout.
38:37If he doesn't like what they're doing, boom, jumps right in there.
38:41You know, guys, what?
38:43It's the playing like assholes type of timeout.
38:46Like, jumping in there, and I don't know how he's, you know,
38:49what he's saying to them in the huddles there.
38:51But, like, it's usually just a reminder.
38:55What we're doing works.
38:58Stop not doing it.
39:00Do it again.
39:02Go back to the thing.
39:03And it almost always kind of happens.
39:05And, you know, a huge play in the last game where they just got,
39:08they went into ISO and they're just launching threes for that 20-2 stretch.
39:11And then coming off one of those timeouts,
39:13you finally get a drive and then out to white for a really big three
39:16and it goes down.
39:17Before there was another one where they got the shot they wanted.
39:21It just didn't go down a corner three maybe from Al.
39:23I forget what it was.
39:24But they got back to it.
39:25So, again, he's doing a good job of reminding them, like, this works.
39:28Do this.
39:29And this series too, Sherrod, shows the value of holiday.
39:32Because, again, not to diminish his impact
39:35or underrate what he's done for this team this year.
39:39But Porzingis got tabbed as the guy who changed everything
39:42in a lot of ways this year.
39:43And, again, they're 32-5 without him now.
39:46This postseason has shown the value of holiday.
39:48Because with Porzingis out of the picture for pretty much the whole playoffs,
39:51you've started to see holiday step up, be more involved in the offense,
39:55certainly do everything he does defensively.
39:58I said it many times.
39:59I said it very early in the year.
40:00This team doesn't work without holiday.
40:02If they just made that Porzingis move,
40:04had everything else that was in place and didn't get holiday,
40:07I don't think they're winning a championship.
40:08Well, Drew Holiday provides a different team.
40:11You have to assume Rob doesn't get hurt here.
40:14He might have.
40:15He might have.
40:16But you can't assume he suffers the same injury.
40:18So you're playing a different style.
40:20They'd be different because they'd have him defensively.
40:22They'd have a different identity.
40:23So I don't know if it would work.
40:26But you can't possibly say a bad thing about the impact holiday's had on this team.
40:31It's amazing.
40:32It's just what's weird is you're right.
40:34Everyone thinks holiday for smart, Porzingis for Rob.
40:37But the trades were opposite, right?
40:38So, like, you were not – it wasn't flopping guards and flopping kicks.
40:41You were going to be missing a smart-type guy.
40:43You were going to be missing a smart-type guy if you didn't make that trade
40:46because you just would have had Rob and Porzingis with Derek White and Pritchard, right?
40:50And so, like, you know, you still had Brogdon in there, too.
40:52And that's why I hesitate to say the key this –
40:55because a lot of people are going to say,
40:56oh, smart going out the door was the key.
40:58That was a guy who had to go.
41:00You couldn't have imagined a better smart replacement than holiday.
41:03If you were going to pick one guy in the entire league,
41:06it would have been holiday to replace smart.
41:08Which is why I did not think it would happen
41:09because the level that Drew Holiday has shown himself to be able to play at
41:13throughout the course of his career,
41:14you're thinking there's no way in hell that Brad can make a deal.
41:17No matter who he's giving up, not named Tatum or Brown could get Drew Holiday.
41:21And the fact that they were able to get him,
41:22you're thinking, like, he gives you stability.
41:24He gives you championship medal.
41:25And more importantly, he gives you a fundamental understanding
41:29of what it takes to get to this stage and emerge victorious.
41:32And calmness, right?
41:33Stability factor is huge.
41:35Yeah, there's one host on the Garden Report
41:36that's been fawning over holiday for a while.
41:38I forget who.
41:39But we were sitting there when the trade was there.
41:41And I think all of us were like, I don't know, maybe, maybe.
41:44No, we weren't. We loved it.
41:45We just sentimentally, it was really hard to let go of.
41:48We were all stuck on Rob.
41:50I mean, look, I'll give you this one.
41:55Rob as an asset long term was tough to let go of
41:58because of the potential ceiling.
42:00I think the hardest thing we,
42:01the thing that was hardest for us to do, for me to do,
42:04for the big Rob files out there was admit that it probably isn't going to,
42:08that he's not going to reach that ceiling.
42:09And that Horford was so important.
42:10And that Horford, today's Horford is more valuable than today's Rob.
42:16But the hope was Rob could be, I mean,
42:19a top 25 impact player on your team.
42:23Because the potential is there.
42:24For all of the other things he can do because he's such a freak.
42:26I just don't know that it's going to get there with him,
42:28which is sad that that potential is never going to be actualized,
42:32never going to reach it.
42:33They needed Horford.
42:35They needed every piece to come together the way it did, Bobby.
42:38You're 100% right.
42:39If it wasn't, if the holiday trade doesn't go through the way that it goes through here,
42:43the team would be a little bit different.
42:45I don't know that it's going to take the same shape that it does now.
42:47But that's how you win championships.
42:48Yeah.
42:49I mean, things have to break your way that you have very little, if any, control over.
42:52They had no idea that Drew Holiday was going to be this impactful.
42:55They thought he could be.
42:56Yes, they did.
42:57They thought he could be.
42:58I mean, Stevens, you know he's been salivating for years over Drew Holiday.
43:03I think he might have tripped on the way to the phone the second he got traded.
43:08Like, oh, my God, I've got to get this guy.
43:11He must have flipped out.
43:13It happened fast and he was aggressive.
43:15Well, Brad, I think, was confident.
43:18But when you look at the last we saw of Drew Holiday before the trade, he looked bad.
43:22Jimmy Butler made him look really, really bad.
43:25And so, while you don't think he's necessarily completely, there's nothing left in the tank,
43:29how much were you going to get from him really was a little bit uncertain.
43:32But Brad knew that if he could be 75-ish percent of the guy that we've seen,
43:37that could potentially get you over the hump.
43:39And to your point, Bobby, the stability that he brings to your lineup,
43:42the consistency, the elite defense, and the timely shot making,
43:46those are all things that he does a little bit better job than Smart.
43:49I'm going to tap out in a minute.
43:50I'm going to let Joe Suepo-Von come into my place.
43:52But he's got to circle all the way around the live position in order to do that.
43:56So, Joe Suepo-Von is going to jump on here in a little bit.
43:59So, just for my final take, I think it ends tonight.
44:05Because I just don't think Dallas, I don't, it's less about Dallas quitting as it is,
44:13I think the Celtics are legit locked in, locked in on this one.
44:19I do not, it's always come down to this team a little bit of faith, right?
44:26Like, are they going to show up?
44:28Are they going to do that thing where they relax or they rest?
44:31And they're not.
44:32And this has dispelled all of it.
44:34The level of seriousness with which they've played in these finals
44:38has been beyond, I think, what anybody could have expected.
44:42Because we've seen, even in these playoffs, small letdowns, pockets of letdowns,
44:48wins that were uninspired, you know?
44:51They know they're better than this team.
44:53They're not playing down to their competition.
44:55They're like, nope, I'm just going to keep coming at you
44:58until you don't want to play anymore.
45:00And it's been amazing to watch.
45:02So, I believe in the Celtics more than I don't believe in Dallas as far as tonight goes.
45:07I feel the same way.
45:09And it's going to be one combination of, do you go down early because you're a little nervous?
45:15You know it's the night where you can raise the trophy.
45:18That's kind of in the back of your head.
45:20And then you have to make that run later in the game to win.
45:22That's what the line points toward to me, the one-point line.
45:26Or it's that thing where you throw that knockout punch early and Dallas rolls over
45:30and it's like 2008 game six, like the 50-point win.
45:34I think it's going to be the former.
45:36As locked in as they are, and they are, John,
45:38there's got to be a little bit of nerves tonight knowing, ooh, we get it tonight.
45:42We're going home.
45:44We're raising that trophy.
45:45We're having the parade on Tuesday.
45:47That's what it's going to be.
45:48Right.
45:49And I think Dallas, contrast that, are going to play the loosers that we've seen them all season.
45:53They have nothing to lose.
45:54They have nothing to lose.
45:55And so that always makes me a little bit nervous because when you're playing with nothing to lose,
46:00it would not shock me if they have the game of their lives.
46:02Yeah.
46:03But that also sometimes results in like these YOLO threes, you know,
46:06and like it can get away from you quickly if you're not willing to fight.
46:10My question now is I don't know how tight the Mavs are.
46:13You know, everyone's going to say that, you know, we're strong and we're tight in this and that,
46:16but it seems a little loose right now.
46:18It does.
46:19It seems like they're, if not pointing fingers, maybe not satisfied with how everybody's playing here.
46:24Well.
46:25And like looking around like which, you know, the we we used to joke about with the Celtics,
46:30there's a little we going on with the Mavericks now.
46:33Like we've got to do better, but they're kind of saying like that guy and that guy.
46:36There's a lot of side eye at Luka right now.
46:38There's a lot of side eye.
46:39Yeah.
46:40And like when it goes to your best player, it's like, all right, what are you going to do?
46:42And that's my thing is like, what do you do?
46:44Like, it's a live and die situation with Luka.
46:47Like, what are you going to do?
46:48Take the ball out of his hands?
46:49Okay, good luck, P.J. Washington.
46:51You go do it.
46:52They can't.
46:53They have to rely on him.
46:54Yeah.
46:55You know?
46:56Anyway, I'm going to peace out.
46:57Exit stage left.
46:58I'm going to bring in Joselito Pavone.
46:59He's going to clean up some of the some of the extra stuff here.
47:03And we should have news soon, I would imagine.
47:05It's about six o'clock.
47:06Right.
47:07Whether Porzingis is going to go or not.
47:08John, do we know yet?
47:09Huh?
47:10Whether Porzingis is a go yet?
47:11We haven't checked.
47:12No, but Luka is officially going to play.
47:14Good to know.
47:15If you guys are worried, don't worry.
47:16Luka is going to be in the—I mean, he's going to be in game four.
47:19Mavs just announced a minute ago.
47:20So, I'll start with you there.
47:21Luka.
47:22Or Lucas.
47:23Yeah, yeah.
47:24Oh.
47:25What are you expecting from Luka tonight?
47:27Does he have an answer?
47:28Does he have a response?
47:29Because as John was just saying about that, everybody's looking at him.
47:32Everyone's giving him the side eye.
47:34And to me, part of the problem here for him and for that team is that they're asking him to do everything.
47:39Yeah.
47:40So, does he have some guys he could lean on, some guys that he could ask to do a little bit more for him?
47:45So, does he have an answer?
47:46Does he have a response?
47:47I mean, I don't see him doing anything drastic.
47:49But in terms of putting forth the right effort on defense, he has to show at least the best defensive side of Luka that we've ever seen.
47:57Because with all the criticism he's received, rightfully so, right?
48:00But all of the examples and the blow-by stats, you know, he's like created his own statistical category with the way he's been playing defense throughout the NBA Finals.
48:08I've never heard of that.
48:09That's when you know everybody, like you're not only under a microscope, but there's evidence behind these facts.
48:15You know what I mean?
48:16And it's the NBA Finals.
48:17So, I think he finds a way to just put forth a significant effort on that side.
48:23But that doesn't mean he's going to be ending this game with like three or four or five steals, right?
48:27But he has to show a way different side or different approach, rather, to playing defense.
48:33I think Jason Kidd, his quotes after Game 3 was telling.
48:36And I think some way, I don't know, between then and now, some sort of like middle ground in the sense of how they're going to execute on that end of the floor had to have been discussed.
48:46And I think that's why the extra film session and all that, not even going out there.
48:50No, they went back to the basics.
48:51And I think Jason Kidd had a big part in that.
48:53Well, I think for them, I wouldn't be surprised if we see a lot of zone.
48:57A lot of zone just to try and hide Luka's defensive deficiencies.
49:01And guess what? Surprise, surprise, Sharod.
49:03I think we see that.
49:05And again, that's why the Celtics have put this Dallas team in whack-a-mole mode.
49:11No matter what the Mavs try to do that makes sense, something pops up that completely knocks whatever the hell they were trying to do out of the water.
49:19And again, we saw it in Game 1, we saw it in Game 2, in Game 3, and I don't think tonight will be any different.
49:23I got two more questions for us.
49:25But first, obviously, we're going to get an update in like five minutes.
49:28Is Porzingis a go tonight? Would you play Porzingis tonight?
49:31I would, even if it's in terms of a decoy role.
49:37Because I just think this means so much to him.
49:40And it's unfortunate.
49:42He's somewhat a part of this run.
49:45And of course, Game 1 is something that we'll always look back on.
49:48But he's missed a ton of this, this playoff run.
49:51So I think for sentimental reasons, you get him out there.
49:54But again, a decoy.
49:56He's been coming off the bench in these spots.
49:59So I wouldn't be shocked if we see 12, 15 minutes of Chris Stapps tonight.
50:04We'll get an update on that in just a couple minutes here.
50:07But one of the last topics I want to talk about here, because Gerard, you've seen all the champions.
50:11You've seen the teams that have won.
50:14Is this an all-time team? Is this one of the greatest teams of all time?
50:17Will we look back on it like that?
50:19If they win it all, I think as time moves on, they will be seen as one of the greatest teams ever.
50:24You look at their playoff record, which will be 16-2.
50:27You look at the fact that they won not one, not two, but three games by 50 more points than a regular season,
50:31which no team had ever done before.
50:33You look at who they have on the roster.
50:35I mean, there are at least four or five guys who will be Hall of Famers one day.
50:38And the further removed we get from this moment, the more I think there will be a greater appreciation
50:43for what this team has been able to accomplish.
50:45And to me, let's not forget about Joe Mizzoula, the youngest coach in the NBA,
50:51winning a championship in his first really full season where he was the guy from the beginning.
50:58So this team will be one of the greats that we remember years from now.
51:03You mentioned that earlier, the fact that there could be multiple Hall of Famers made out of this series.
51:08Yeah, I 100% agree in terms of being one of the greatest teams.
51:12But it's going to be funny how the entire offseason is going to be like,
51:15oh, well, this fact compared to any other NBA team.
51:20As they continue to make these historic marks, especially if they're able to pull this one out tonight
51:25and finish it on a winning streak, I think a lot of the national media will look back and say,
51:30man, we overlooked how dominant this team was.
51:33Are they? Is that the response?
51:35I think so.
51:36Is it going to be the easiest run ever?
51:38What do you mean?
51:39In terms of the opponents, in terms of the field they play.
51:41I mean, I don't think so.
51:43People forget about that stuff as time moves on.
51:46Especially when you look at just the way the whole playoffs broke down.
51:50I mean, no one had this happening.
51:52Maybe the Celtics part, but no one had Dallas.
51:54But in terms of the younger teams, like the Minnesota Timberwolves and all that,
51:59I don't think you look back on this run and say, man, the Celtics had it so easy.
52:03I think you look back on it and say, man, this organization prepared itself for any and every situation.
52:08And a lot of that goes back to what we saw in the Eastern Conference Finals against the Miami Heat.
52:12And Joe Mizzoula is a big part of that as well.
52:14I think they all learned from that.
52:16What Jalen Brown said, like how he was embarrassed, the way he worded it,
52:20embarrassed about what happened in Game 7 and how that drove him to have the best season of his career
52:25and to do what he's doing right now.
52:26I think that's going to be a lot of the storylines we'll see throughout the offseason.
52:30When you think about Golden State's dynasty, no one ever talks about the fact that their first title run,
52:34there was a key player or starter missing in every single series.
52:37That's never brought up. Why?
52:38Because at the end of the day, they still had to go out there and win the damn championship.
52:42And once you do that, all the stuff and all the question marks about your journey to get there,
52:46it becomes a moot point because at the end of the day, there's only one team left standing, and that's your crew.
52:51I find it interesting, too, because that debate's been going on the whole playoffs.
52:55First two rounds, you saw Jimmy Butler go down.
52:57You saw Donovan Mitchell go down.
52:59That's a big part of this conversation, the fact that every star except in this series has seen their opposing star go down.
53:06You look at the point, but you start to look at some of the other teams in there,
53:09to your point about how people forget as time goes on.
53:11It was like the 85 Lakers, a couple of those Lakers teams from the 80s that were playing Portland
53:17and some of these other teams back then that did not have great winning percentages.
53:21But everyone forgets that, and people just look at the 80s Lakers and say,
53:24that was one of the best teams of all time.
53:26I just think the transition between the big three era, so to speak,
53:30or the terms of manufactured, in terms of getting guys together,
53:36that's the transition we're seeing now where you need to have a deeper roster if you want to win a championship.
53:41You get two future Hall of Famers, maybe a third in there, and then you just figure out the rest of the roster.
53:48I think the league overall, we're transitioning to this era where the team like the Boston Celtics,
53:54that's the model now, and you have a balance of young superstars,
53:58older guys that know their role, and just six, seven solid rotational players that are going to win.
54:04I think the rest of the NBA is going to catch up in the sense of doing that,
54:08but the Celtics have kicked the door open in this era,
54:12and we're going to look back on this team saying that's when this started,
54:15that's when the new era started.
54:17When Kyrie left thinking that it was going to be easier for him to go to Brooklyn and play with his buddies and all that,
54:22that's kind of like the beginning of the end of that era.
54:25This is ground zero of the Celtics dynasty right here.
54:27Absolutely.
54:28We're going to look back and look at this as ground zero for that.
54:30Well, Tatum did say the other day this could be the first,
54:33and they've got to win it again next year because everyone's going to say they didn't win at all.
54:36I'm looking for an update. We don't have Portis English yet, do we?
54:39No.
54:40I'm sure they're going to say game time decision.
54:43I think they'll do it before Joe Mazzullo, no? You don't think so?
54:46He's going now, so they haven't said anything yet.
54:48They said they did it right after Joe, so we didn't have to talk about that.
54:51I anticipate they'll do it after Joe.
54:53I'd imagine game time decision. We'll see.
54:55Either way, you'll see it on Twitter when it happens.
54:57Great run, Blakely, for Josue Pavone, John Zanis nearby still.
55:03We are about to watch, potentially, the Celtics win the championship tonight,
55:07and we, of course, will be on right after the game, Celtics postgame show, live,
55:11bringing you the ceremony, bringing you everything, if that is indeed how it's going to go tonight.
55:16And that is it for us pregame.
