00:00 A saint has arrived to earth, but he's decked out in silver.
00:03 Here's your look at the McFarlane Toys Spawn, the Dark Redeemer.
00:07 The Redeemer is considered the anti-spawn,
00:26 heaven's equivalent of the Hell's Hellspawn, a powerful religious warrior infused with heavenly matter
00:31 and purpose to be a durable warrior of God.
00:33 Mysterious organization known as the Ethereal Masters chose worthy mortals to be the host of the Redeemer
00:38 and transform into angelic warriors to battle Hell.
00:41 Unfortunately, the Redeemer typically retains no knowledge of their mortal lives,
00:45 even if they return to the mortal realm.
00:47 However, the current Redeemer, Eddie Frank, not only retained his memories,
00:50 but fueled by his rage towards the Hellspawns, made him the most powerful Redeemer to date.
00:55 Religion may have given him the faith, but it was heaven that gave him the armor.
00:59 Just before, of course, we get a close look at the McFarlane Toys Spawn, the Dark Redeemer,
01:02 the tape measure is going to tell us that the figure stands at 7 and a quarter inches in height,
01:07 where the Dark Redeemer is 18 centimeters tall.
01:10 I seem to have a thing for this particular mold.
01:12 Having already collected both the original Redeemer,
01:14 and then recently we looked at the glow-in-the-dark version of the figure,
01:17 all three of them are using the exact same mold.
01:20 All three of them also suffer the exact same issue.
01:22 With heavy-weighted wings on the backs of their body, all three of them suffer from extremely loose ankles.
01:28 Trying, though, not to be a Debbie Downer about loose ankles,
01:30 the figure does come included with two accessories.
01:33 First, his trusty sword, which just so happens to be the exact same sword that the original Redeemer had.
01:38 When this was cast in gold, this one, though, is cast in black plastic,
01:42 and seems to be brushed over with a nice lighter gray.
01:44 This same sword, if I can actually have enough fingers for this,
01:48 was also used again when we got the glow-in-the-dark release,
01:50 although this one did have a glow-in-the-dark blade.
01:53 The glow-in-the-dark version of the Redeemer, more swords, more swords,
01:56 did also come included with this sword,
01:58 although the dark Redeemer and the original Redeemer didn't have that.
02:01 There was a couple of variations on that original Redeemer.
02:03 Don't make me try to track down those as well.
02:05 That probably will end up happening, too.
02:07 The sword does have the benefit, at least, while gripping hands on both sides,
02:11 he has the means to actually hold the sword on either side.
02:13 The sword itself is, again, nicely detailed.
02:15 It kind of has like a bat face on the front of it,
02:18 and very nicely decorative detail on both the hilt and the guard.
02:21 Like I said, though, it does fit into either one of his hands,
02:24 but then it will add even more weight to his already loose ankles.
02:27 Just going to take this, fit it into his hand.
02:30 Try not to poke yourself in the process.
02:32 That's already happened a couple of times already,
02:34 but yeah, he does have the means to hold the sword.
02:36 The problem, though, still continues to be one thing,
02:38 and that's his loose ankles.
02:39 Even though I've already really used the display stand,
02:41 which was his one other accessory,
02:43 I'm attaching onto the bottoms of the feet
02:45 in the hopes that the figure would stand on his own
02:47 while I could just talk away about using the same mold on swords.
02:51 Unfortunately, though, like this ankle, and even this one too,
02:53 but mostly this one, is the biggest culprit.
02:55 It just is extremely loose.
02:57 Couple that with the fact that you have to add wings
02:59 on the back of the figure's body.
03:00 Let's go ahead and just take the sword out of his hand for right now.
03:03 The sword, by the way, there is no extra storage,
03:05 so if you think you can holster it on the side,
03:06 think again, Jack. It ain't gonna happen.
03:08 Even though there are pegs, kind of like...
03:10 It's more sculpted just by the way that the guard is designed.
03:13 It always would make you think that you could be able to plug this in.
03:16 I suppose they could probably have put a hole right there
03:18 that you could take in the peg and then plugged it onto the side,
03:20 but they didn't decide to do that.
03:23 Like I said, though, the wings were something that had to be installed.
03:25 These are one of those things that once you get the wings in place,
03:28 good luck trying to remove them.
03:29 And not that I really have a plan to take these off in the first place,
03:32 but you really have to grind them in there.
03:35 [imitates grinding]
03:36 Not making sure of that noise in the process,
03:38 but you really have to turn to get them actually in there,
03:40 embedded into the plastic.
03:41 And again, once they're in there, they're next to impossible to remove.
03:45 The benefit of the wings is the fact that they also have hinges on them, too.
03:48 So again, not only can you rotate them back and forth this way,
03:50 but you can also hinge them in and out this way as well.
03:53 I would like to usually have my...
03:55 Well, I had this also with the original Redeemer.
03:56 I usually had the wings back on display like this.
03:59 And that may not have helped matters at all
04:01 when it came to the stability of his ankles.
04:03 I may have even caused the problem more,
04:05 the greater than it was already in the first place.
04:07 But like the wings themselves can be angled back.
04:09 I like the way that they've actually molded these this time around.
04:12 The original Redeemer kind of went more the route of a lighter gray,
04:15 a lighter silverish gray.
04:17 In fact, actually, let's bring in the original Redeemer so you guys can see.
04:20 See how the original wings, I mean, obviously are a lighter gray.
04:22 This one kind of again goes the same approach really as the sword.
04:26 Molding this in black plastic and then just brushing on gingerly carefully.
04:31 I mean, not even so carefully.
04:32 Some of the areas obviously have a little bit more of the brushing of the lighter gray.
04:35 Some of the areas don't.
04:37 But it gets the job done.
04:38 And boy, those are nice looking wings.
04:40 I, again, like to have them angled more further back than forward.
04:43 But unfortunately, though, that's going to even cause more chaos
04:45 when it comes to the ankles holding the weight of this figure.
04:47 Like again, like you can see how loose that is.
04:50 I'm going to see if maybe I can add some floor polish,
04:52 some ways of tightening up joints.
04:54 If you guys can think of other ways other than floor polish
04:56 to tighten up joints on loose figures, let me know down below.
04:58 But yes, I will have to do that.
05:00 Some remedy is required when it gets to fixing the ankles.
05:04 Because again, this guy has them.
05:05 I mean, getting this guy out of the packaging
05:07 for the little time that I've had this guy loose,
05:08 maybe like an hour, maybe two hours,
05:10 he's already had, I mean, I'm sure he started pretty loose in the first place.
05:14 What little I've actually done to move this guy around,
05:16 I don't think has caused any more problems with the looseness of his ankles.
05:19 Okay, we're going to stop talking about that.
05:21 Getting a little closer look at the Redeemer's head sculpt,
05:23 it is though being the exact same as the other two.
05:25 I got to say the approach of going this with all silver is a nice touch on the figure.
05:29 Again, for your source material, comparing the one to the other,
05:32 Exhibit A is the first Redeemer.
05:34 Exhibit A has lighter blue.
05:36 And Exhibit A also has nice gold.
05:38 Now Exhibit B does have all this gold swapped out for silver instead.
05:42 And while I do, of course, from the OG standpoint of things,
05:45 still prefer the regular original version of Redeemer as being my all-time favorite,
05:50 there's something to be said about now decking this guy out in silver
05:53 that really does pop on the figure's sculpting.
05:55 When we looked at the glow-in-the-dark version of the Redeemer,
05:59 he kept the colors pretty much somewhat consistent.
06:02 So instead of blues, well, he had darker blues.
06:04 And instead of actually having just a matter-of-matter gold,
06:07 it actually had, well, you know, again, let's bring him in.
06:09 All right, we got him all in front of us anyways.
06:12 Here's the glow-in-the-dark version of the Redeemer,
06:13 kind of keeping more to pastel colors.
06:15 I like the coloring of this guy.
06:17 But yeah, having this in black and now doing this in silver
06:20 does wonders for this particular mold.
06:22 Of course, you got the spikes there as his mohawk on the front,
06:24 starting smaller with the spikes getting progressively bigger in the middle,
06:28 getting smaller there on the back.
06:29 He's got these nice little shoulder pieces of his armor.
06:32 Large spike shoulder pads, by the way,
06:34 enamored and adored in these really nice-looking scrollwork sculpting
06:39 that they put on the front of his chest.
06:40 He also has there on the side of it as well.
06:42 I guess this would be the part that kind of would guard his face if he's in battle.
06:45 Not that he really necessarily needs anything to protect him in battle.
06:47 I mean, he's basically armored up from head to toe.
06:50 The only little bit of color other than the silver that he has
06:53 happens to be this little cross plate that he has on the front of his belt.
06:56 It's done here in red, and it's really the only part on the figure
06:59 that actually does have any other color than black and silver.
07:03 The figure itself does, again, look really nice with the coloring of the deco,
07:06 both in black and silver.
07:07 I think it's one thing to take a figure...
07:10 I mean, obviously, when we look at the glow-in-the-dark version,
07:12 it was essentially still keeping the same color scheme
07:14 as the original version of the Redeemer,
07:15 just kind of lightening up the colors
07:17 and making it, obviously, a little bit more available
07:19 so you could glow in the dark.
07:20 You could shine a light source across him,
07:21 like I used a black light in that review,
07:23 and you could illuminate the cross on the front of his face.
07:26 This guy doesn't have that. I don't think he needs that either.
07:28 What he does have, though, again, is just the fact that the sculpting from right day one
07:32 was really good, and now they're just doing in silver instead of the gold.
07:35 I love the spikes that he's got on the sides for his forearms.
07:38 These, by the way, are softer plastic.
07:40 I wish the same could be said for the spikes that he has on his hands.
07:43 I guess that would be a good thing. They aren't going to get crushed.
07:45 But trying to move the hands, you feel yourself frequently pricking yourself.
07:49 He's got, of course, the '90s version of the thigh belt.
07:53 This is... Instead of actually having pockets,
07:55 they seem to be all here crosses.
07:57 And he's got some decently detailed sculpted feet as well.
08:00 One longer boot, obviously, is on the one side.
08:03 That was still the same when we looked at the original two Redeemers.
08:05 Now, again, you've just got, again, all that silver now represented.
08:08 Really looking good on this figure.
08:10 Now, for the figure's articulation, it's going to be the exact same as the other two Redeemers.
08:13 So the head is going to be on a ball joint.
08:15 I would say normally it would allow the head to rotate all the way around.
08:17 I don't know if you'd really want to do that on anyone, heavenly or not.
08:21 The head does look up, looks down, and it does also move back and forth.
08:25 The upper torso, once again, is going to be on a ball joint.
08:27 The lower torso, just below the belt, is also on a ball joint.
08:31 The legs, the arms, come out.
08:33 Now, the benefit of the arms is where they've attached the shoulder pads.
08:36 They've attached it further down here.
08:37 And with these also being softer plastic...
08:40 Softer plastic means that when you are bringing the arms out,
08:43 the shoulder pads get out of the way. Get out of the way.
08:47 There is a swivel there in the bicep.
08:48 The figure does also possess a double hinge on the elbow.
08:51 And the hands, once again, rotate all the way around.
08:53 Pricky, pricky.
08:55 The legs do split out. They're on ratcheted joints.
08:57 You can take the legs and move forward. You can move them back.
08:59 There's a swivel at the top of the thigh.
09:00 The figure does have a double hinge on the knee.
09:03 And then, rounding out the things, the remaining problems with the figure
09:05 is obviously the already mentioned loose ankles.
09:07 Back and forth, rocking back and forth this way.
09:10 And yes, he does have toe articulation as well.
09:12 The biggest problem with this figure is already something I've stated several times already.
09:16 I don't want to sound like a broken record, but yes, the loose ankles.
09:19 You know, the figure already has ankle pivots.
09:22 You know, one of those rocking ankle joints
09:24 that if you have any DC Multiverse figures, or you have any Spawn figures for that matter,
09:28 you already know kind of down the road, as you have these figures on your collection shelf,
09:32 they seem to develop looseness in their ankles.
09:34 There's a couple of figures right now, in fact,
09:36 that have now had to swap out using display stands
09:40 because having the figure standing on their own -
09:42 let's bring the wings down a little bit -
09:44 having the figure standing on his own just couldn't cut it.
09:46 So I had to use myself a display stand.
09:48 I'm going to definitely have to do that right out the gate
09:50 when it comes to displaying the brand new Dark Redeemer.
09:53 Again, saying brand new, the figure has been around for a bit,
09:56 but I did want to get around to reviewing this guy.
09:58 You know, again, something about this mold could be said.
10:00 It's a nice looking mold for Redeemer,
10:02 but plagued with problems when it comes to his ankle articulation.
10:04 Not that, again, it's exclusive at all to Redeemer,
10:07 but when you're starting to add things like heavy plastic wings on the back of a body,
10:11 of course, things like then loose ankles may be starting to be a problem.
10:15 I was hoping, though, it wasn't going to be a problem
10:17 getting the figure immediately out of the packaging, though.
10:19 I've been kind of guilty of this in the past,
10:21 of liking molds so much that I go out of my way to get different variations of them,
10:25 and that kind of works in line with what McFarlane's doing as well.
10:27 They also, when they like their molds, want to release several different versions of them.
10:31 They tend to sometimes be different accessories that they pack.
10:34 A lot of times, maybe they release different color variations.
10:37 In this case, it was actually a color variation that caught my eye on the Dark Redeemer.
10:41 Liking already the mold that we got before in the original Redeemer,
10:44 and liking also the glow-in-the-dark version,
10:46 I was on the hunt, on the prowl, of trying to get another variation of him
10:49 in a slightly different deco.
10:51 Sure enough, though, lady luck was smiling down on me
10:53 that I happened to go to my local comic book store,
10:55 and because the figure was, though, slightly older,
10:57 I was able to get this guy at $28.
10:59 $28! You can't beat that at all.
11:01 Had I maybe gone online to places like eBay,
11:03 I probably would have paid more closer, I would imagine, to $40 to $50.
11:07 It worked also for the benefit of the owners there at the comic book store
11:10 that when I went over to the desk and slapped this down in front of the cash register,
11:14 you were probably thinking, "Wow, I never thought we'd ever get rid of the Dark Redeemer."
11:19 You did. You gave it to me, and now I'm going to add it to my collection.
11:22 Dark Redeemer does look nice, and it's not just the Malibu Stacy case, either,
11:25 that we're giving him a completely different accessory.
11:27 He's decked nicely, though, in silver and black,
11:29 instead of the traditional blue and gold.
11:32 He still obviously still has the notable problems.
11:34 I'm sure that's problems I can probably go in there and fix.
11:37 The loose ankles is just a case of probably adding something to tighten up the joint.
11:41 I know you guys have certainly recommended things in the past.
11:42 I might try to find solvable solutions,
11:45 because I would like to have this guy displayed along with my other two Redeemers.
11:48 I just don't want to have the worries that go along with it,
11:50 of having a loose figure falling off the shelf.
11:53 What do you guys think of Dark Redeemer?
11:54 Let me know down below in the comment section for your video question for today.
11:57 What's a variation on a figure that you might actually like a little bit more than the original?
12:03 Not to say that I like this one more than the original OG Redeemer,
12:05 but there's something to be said about silver.
12:08 Let me know down below in the comment section.
12:09 What is one of your favorite variations of a figure that wasn't the original?
12:13 So again, it could have been a bloodied version, like, for example,
12:16 the original McFarlane movie, Maniacs, were good examples of that.
12:19 They released original versions of those figures, and they released bloodied versions.
12:23 Give me the example of a variation of figure that you actually like a little bit more than the original.
12:27 Also, hey, as well, if you guys did enjoy this video, I want to throw a like.
