Wolves 2 Luton 1 - Matt Maher and Nathan Judah analysis
Transcript
00:00Hello I'm Nathan Tudor and I'm here with Matt, Mayor Matt. Thank God. We needed to get rid
00:15of Keno, get Mayor in, get the victory. It's been a while. I think they just about deserved
00:20it didn't they today? I think yeah, I think they deserved it. I think with 20 minutes
00:24to go you're thinking this could be 3 or 4. I think Wolves thought that potentially.
00:30They seemed to be playing, I've just said to somebody else in the press box, they seemed
00:33to be playing, the Samedo chance summed it up for me. It could have set Wang up for an
00:38easy finish. I know where he's gone for it himself but the game was, I think Wolves got
00:43the impression the game was dead. I mean to be honest so did I. You know, Luton had offered
00:49nothing really after going behind. I mean the first 40 minutes there was one bit of
00:53quality with Lamina's pass for Wang. Other than that it was pretty poor fare. And Luton,
01:01you know, the game turns in 30 seconds where Morris sends a header straight and so Wolves
01:05are going to be able to score. But after that, after Wolves went in front, Luton weren't
01:09really at the races and you know Wolves had tuned it up, cruising, probably cruising a
01:15little too much. I think that will annoy Gary O'Neill. But as you say, they've got the win
01:20which they needed you know because tough games to come and you know, just need a bit of positivity
01:26which obviously they don't really have.
01:27Absolutely, we thought Wang had scored his first goal of 2024 on Wednesday night, was
01:30ruled out. Finally came today, good timing although the fans didn't celebrate until the
01:38whistle was kicked off for the kick-off but he deserved it. And look, he's looked sharper
01:43I think since he's been back. He's had obviously a couple of niggling injuries since he's come
01:47back from the Asia Trophy and he's looking more like the player that we saw in 2023.
01:52Absolutely, I mean you do think it's a case, watching Wang and Kuni today, first time they've
01:57started together since December the 27th, that was the last time Wang had scored in
02:02the league, scored for Wolves. And there was an element in the first half, particularly
02:06when they combined for the first goal, you're thinking what might have been because just
02:11looking at the table now, Wolves are I think, top ten again, seven points behind seventh
02:16I think, they're not that far behind the race, in fact they've gone seven games without a
02:23win and they're still not a million miles away so it is frustrating, what could have
02:28been. It is frustrating, it's been a frustrating second half of the season for Wang but I thought
02:34he was good today, I thought Kuni looked like a player who was determined, just happy to
02:39be back out there running everywhere and Wolves just had that quality which Luton didn't frankly,
02:48let's be honest, that's the third time I've seen Luton this season and I'm wondering how
02:55they've managed to get to 25 points.
02:57Mario Lamina's set a training ground routine into the All-Winter to the corner there and
03:04celebrated with the management, a really nice finish by Totti Gomez and that was, we thought
03:09that was that really, weren't you?
03:10Yeah, a 2-0, so 2-0 Wolves were in complete command until they weren't at the bio.
03:17Because our goal wanted to concede.
03:19Yeah well I'd actually looked away because everyone, the sarcastic cheers because from
03:24this angle it looked like Woodrow put it over the bar, but it's gone back out to Doherty
03:29and yeah Wolves have just perhaps switched off and a 2-1, some of the game's back on
03:35but you know, Luton didn't actually fashion that much.
03:39It's the concerns, it's the crowd getting nervy, you can feel it in the, you know, you
03:44can feel it there but yeah, Wolves deserved to win that game.
03:49They had more quality, it wasn't pretty.
03:52Look, it's not a game that's going to live long in the memory but when you've got seven
03:55games without a win, when you've had the injuries, you just need it.
03:59It doesn't really matter how you get it done.
04:02And look, regardless of the opposition, bar maybe Sheffield United, it's hard to win
04:06Premier League games, it's hard to get over the line sometimes.
04:09It is, it is.
04:10Look, I'll be honest, well actually Burnley are looking that they might pull it out of
04:14the bag, you know, because of it, but I have to say Luton and Sheffield United are among
04:18the two of the poorest teams I've ever seen.
04:21There would be no relegation battle without point deductions.
04:23No.
04:24But like you say, you've got to beat these teams and Wolves did that today and should
04:29have done that more comfortably.
04:30I think Gary O'Neill wouldn't have been able to finish three or four nil.
04:35At the same time, they go to a difficult game.
04:38Without being great, I thought the positivity today, I thought Lamine was very good, I thought
04:42Troy was very good.
04:43Troy was excellent, yeah.
04:44And he had to wait for his chance, hasn't he?
04:46So we really doubt your positives there and back into the top ten.
04:52But it would be hard to finish in the top ten with the pictures to come.
04:54It will be, it will be.
04:56I think what Gary O'Neill want to do is build on that now.
04:58They've got that over and done with.
05:00They've got the win now.
05:01They go to Manchester City, they go to Liverpool.
05:03I don't think he'll want them just to sit back and defend.
05:06You look at Kunya, 75 minutes again today.
05:09He'll probably be ready to play 90 minutes.
05:11They can turn some teams over.
05:13They can be dangerous.
05:14They've got top six, speak for yourself.
05:17They're capable of doing damage.
05:22It's a shame Neto's been missing for so long because he would make a huge difference.
05:28He's a top quality player.
05:30But they have got the capability of going to Man City and Liverpool
05:34and causing problems.
05:36They've done it before.
05:37So I wouldn't write them up in those games.
05:39But with those games to come, you felt,
05:41don't want to be going to Man City on an eight game, winless streak.
05:45So it was important today.
05:47It wasn't a vintage performance.
05:50They played a lot better this season.
05:52But they've played some pretty wonderful matches this season.
05:56The Wolves have not got what they deserve.
05:58And as I said, they deserve to win this today anyway.
06:02Thankfully, not a classic.
06:03Wolves 2, we didn't play.
06:06I'm going to wager the last win was for them.
06:10I think it was probably warmer.
06:12It's freezing.
06:13It's freezing too.
06:14It's freezing.
06:15Wolves were good through the winter.
06:19Maybe it's the cold weather.
06:21I can't even think.
06:22Wolves 2 a little more.
