Brighton 2 Wolves 2 - Liam Keen and Nathan Judah analysis
Transcript
00:00Hello, I'm Nathan Dewdale, I'm here with the Wolves Reporter, Mr Liam Keane. Liam, Brighton
00:132, Wolverhampton Wanderers 2. Take a breath. This is why we love the game of football.
00:20Evans-Ferguson, 2-0, game over, everyone's going to be absolutely devastated, two huge
00:26games and all of a sudden, a comeback from absolutely nowhere, right in front of the
00:33Wolves fans and you've gone from absolute despair to almost, that almost feels like
00:38three points. Yeah, it does. It's a massive, massive point. To be a little bit cliched,
00:44could it be a turning point for the Wolves? Look, credit to Brian, they're a fantastic
00:50team, they really are. They didn't actually create a lot today, I don't think. They could
00:56have. Clear-cut-wise, I think they dominated the possession, Wolves actually defended
01:00quite well and that first goal that they give away in that first half is almost criminal
01:04for Wolves. As they start, obviously the discussion around goalkeepers at the moment kicks it
01:08straight to Caglioglu and hands Brighton an opportunity to go forward and it's a very
01:12good goal after that, into Ruta, into Waubeck and it's a good finish. Wolves were 1-0 down
01:18for the majority of this game really and it could have very easily been 0-0. It was a
01:23tight game, there wasn't a lot in it. Wolves were a much better second half in terms of
01:27offering a threat, that was the biggest criticism really from the first half. Didn't offer anything
01:31going forward, last and very quiet, couldn't have not involved in the game, 8-0, very deep
01:35and all of a sudden, a couple of changes at half-time and Wolves find a little bit of
01:39life and then they concede a second and you think the game's gone, don't you? Of course
01:42you do, of course you do, especially here. And look, Evan Ferguson, it's a fantastic
01:46finish, I think he takes it really, really well. Slightly unfortunate from a Wolves point
01:49of view and you find yourself 2-0 down and the game's gone. Within three minutes you
01:52equalise and it just gives you that little bit of impetus and what a moment at the end.
01:56And look, a lot of the fans I've spoken to after the game are giving credit for that
01:59and it was a pretty ballsy half-time change as well. Carlos Forbes coming on, we talk
02:03about a back three, a back four, they went to a back four as well and Wolves definitely
02:08looked a lot more threatening, didn't they? Even when they went 2-0 down but before that
02:12they had a better second half, they were the better-sized second half and thankfully they
02:15were rewarded right at the death. Yeah, I think Gary Nils clearly identified an area
02:19to carry more of a threat to Herb Brighton and I thought that was in between the lines,
02:24particularly on his right side. Sarabia comes on, out of the cold. We saw the good and the
02:28bad of Paulo Sarabia in that half. We did, there was a couple of very, very poor passes
02:31that actually almost handed, well did hand Brian a couple of chances and one in particular
02:36that Guerno and Dawson do well to stop Welbeck but Sarabia's picked the ball up into really
02:41intelligent positions, having not played in the Premier League since August 25th against
02:45Chelsea and he plays some really important cutting passes and his corner, albeit Dawson
02:52does a lot really to set up Ignoree, his corner ends in that first goal and I think he has
02:59had impact. Forwards less so, I thought forwards was actually quite poor to be honest coming
03:02on and he comes off right at the end as well, the sub being substituted but it worked, Wolves
03:08carried more of a threat. But the width was there, it was more the width that was there
03:11and I think when you're looking at how narrow they are with playing that midfield three
03:15and you look at Cunha who was pretty poor first half, in fact both forwards were pretty
03:18poor first half and Struymarsen to a certain extent in the second half but when you give
03:22them that width regardless of whether, you give defences something to think about a little
03:25bit more and there's more avenues there and I do feel now going into these two games that
03:29you might see a little bit more width from the start. Yeah and I think particularly with
03:32the next few games being at home you're going to have to aren't you? You've got to start
03:35winning the game. Exactly, exactly. It's not a win but you have to take what you can from
03:40a huge turning point. From 2-0 down and it's a massive, massive moment for this team. There
03:44was a show of togetherness with the supporters, the supporters were fantastic towards the
03:49end of that, that game as well, splurring the team on, they get the equaliser, Cunha
03:54perhaps slightly selfish in taking it on and I'm thinking just pass it, there's a pass
03:58there, there's two or three passes. By the way Tommy Doyle, my word that is absolutely
04:02superb in that corner, 4v1 and somehow wins the ball. I think he's a fabulous player,
04:06he gets criticism from some sections of the supporters, I think he's a wonderful player,
04:09I really do. Wins the ball there, plays the forward pass into Cunha and Cunha carries
04:12it and he's got two, three, four passes to make and I'm thinking please just find some,
04:17there's a tap in here somewhere. He gets a little bit fortunate with the flexion, albeit
04:21it might have been going in anyway and what a moment. I tweeted this at the time, big
04:25players stand up in big moments, Mateusz Cunha didn't have his best game in Walshire, better
04:29in the second half but not his best overall game and he pops up with a massive moment.
04:33Yeah look, it's still two points from nine games but they are off the bottom of the table
04:38and it does feel like a turning point, it does feel like in front of those fans as well,
04:43they were invested in this game, you could see how much he meant to Gary O'Neill at the
04:46end there as well. Look, if they'd lost this game 2-0, we're not talking about this, it's
04:50a massive game for Crystal Palace, it's still a massive game for these, it's only one point
04:54but at the same time you do feel that's something to build on, to galvanise us. Look, Bryno
04:59a top side away from home, a really, really top quality side that will give these players
05:03a confidence, you can play well but if you're losing every single week, you've still got
05:07that underlining, well we're not going to be good enough here, we'll lose a goal and
05:11we're going to lose the game but that's going to give them plenty of hope going forward
05:14into two huge games and they've got to win one if not two. If that doesn't galvanise
05:18them going into two big games, nothing will because this is an emotional side, they feed
05:23off the emotion. Negatively, that negative emotion has been forcing them into some very,
05:27very poor results and some poor performances over the last eight or nine games. That should
05:33spur them on into some big performances now and results. You have to go and win these
05:37games now and Wolves have got a great opportunity. Look, there's a lot of work to do to catch
05:42up with sides but that one point is going to give them the impetus to do it. They're
05:47a talented team, as long as they're set up right, set up correctly, which more often
05:51than not I think they have been this season, Brentford obviously being a good example of
05:54them not being so, then they will get points, they will score goals, they will have big
05:59performances and that should be the moment that pushes them on. It could have been a
06:02lot different, couldn't it? Tommy Doyle had a fantastic chance first half. He did. You
06:06look at Andre was on the bench today, has Tommy Doyle done enough to keep his spot?
06:10I think probably so. I think so, yes. Sam Johnston was not in the squad today, you think
06:15he'll be fit next week, that's an interesting decision because I thought Jose Salva overall
06:19was pretty good today, you can't give away that goal and we talked about goalkeepers
06:23all day long. No, it's a really poor goal to give away, albeit his overall performance
06:26was actually pretty decent, wasn't it? I don't think there was anything particularly
06:28poor from him aside from that one moment at Manders really. Which is what he's going
06:32to be remembered for. Exactly, and that will linger in the minds of those making the decisions
06:36I'm sure. I think at the moment, in my personal opinion, I don't think Sal's done enough
06:39to lose his place. Sam Johnston will be coming back in available and we'll be expecting
06:45and desperate to be playing. I'm just weighing, I haven't been able to do a dot com yet this
06:49season. I feel like I can do it today but I can't do it because it's only a point.
06:52No, it's only a point, it's only a point. I'll wait till Palace. It's Brighton 2, Wolves
