Texas Ranger General Manager Jon Daniels details Joey Gallo testing positive for COVID-19.
Transcript
00:00One positive COVID test to announce with the player's permission.
00:06It's Joey Gallo.
00:07So Joey, and he'd, Joey had asked me to, in our conversations,
00:13thought it was best just kind of lay out the timeline so
00:18that you guys all can understand, and
00:21part of the reason why it was a little cryptic here the last few days.
00:27So Joey tested with our initial intake screening on June 27th.
00:35We got the initial result of a positive test on June 29th.
00:40We did a, and that was the saliva test for Major League Baseball.
00:45We did the nasal swab test to kind of double check, so to speak.
00:51Just to confirm the diagnosis on June 30th, and that came back negative.
00:57So there was some thought that it may be a false positive.
01:03We did, waited 48 hours, and he took another saliva test on July 2nd.
01:09And then we got that result back yesterday on July 5th.
01:14And that was confirmed to be positive.
01:16So that's, you guys gonna see the timeline there a little bit.
01:22So it's been, I think, nine days since his initial positive test,
01:27which was Saturday the 27th.
01:29So we're, he's kind of well into this process.
01:34He'll be tested here regularly going forward until we get,
01:41he has two negatives spaced out at least 24 hours.
01:45And then any other requirements are met.
01:52He's asymptomatic, he feels great, he's isolating at home.
01:56And we're, I'm thankful for that piece of it,
02:00that he's not having any health issues related to this, or really to anything.
02:06Kind of mindset is going into this was,
02:09it's not a matter of if guys test positive, but when.
02:14And obviously this thing doesn't discriminate whether it's a star player or
02:20somebody trying to make the club.
02:21So again, I think that the key thing here for us is that, and for Joey,
02:27is that he's asymptomatic and he feels good and healthy.
02:31And so based on that and based on some other experiences that we've had or
02:36read about or been told about, I feel like he should be pretty much good to go.
02:43Once he's cleared, assuming and
02:46hopeful that he doesn't develop any symptoms as we go.
02:51Obviously, Joey's one of our best players.
02:53So from a baseball standpoint, it's not great,
02:58but it's also really early in the process.
03:02And I think if this thing follows a timeline that some of the other
03:06asymptomatic cases have that we're aware of, he'll have plenty of time to be ready.
03:11So I'm hopeful that he's, it's approximately two weeks.
03:16Largely, the bulk of that time has already passed.
03:20And if that does hold, then I think Joe will be ready for the season.
