00:00 Science, technology and innovation minister Chang Lee Kang said the shift to automation
00:08 will not affect the job market as much.
00:10 He said there might be some reduction in the number of workers, but the need for different
00:15 skill set will open up opportunities for the locals.
00:19 Maybe now we need a lot of labour intensive, I mean a lot of labour for some labour intensive
00:26 activities, but I think after automation we still need a number, quite a significant number
00:33 of labour, but we need labour with new skill set that can manage the system, that can do
00:40 automation, AI etc.
00:42 So we still need labour, but just high skilled labour.
00:47 So I don't think it will really affect us.
00:49 And nowadays even in SMEs, a lot of labour intensive activities are done by foreign workers.
00:57 So it won't affect the local job market.
01:00 Chang was speaking to reporters after delivering his keynote address at the Malaysia Semiconductor
01:05 Industry Association SME Conference on Tuesday.

01:14 the latest technologies via collaboration with the ministry.
01:18 Efforts from various parties are very crucial to modernise SMEs, bridging the gap with larger
01:25 entities to propel the industries forward.
01:29 SMEs form the backbone of our economy, comprising a substantial portion of businesses across
01:36 various sectors.
01:38 They are agile, adaptable and possess the potential to innovate and disrupt industries.
01:44 We can create a supportive ecosystem conducive to innovation and growth.
01:50 Therefore, I strongly urge our SMEs to collaborate closely with MIMOS, leveraging their expertise
01:57 in R&D to harness the latest technologies.
