00:00Hello there, welcome to another episode of Putting Dr. G on the Spot.
00:04As we venture towards the end of the year, we have many many more myths to debunk.
00:09On this episode, we're focusing on frequency of ejaculation and its correlations with fertility.
00:22So when somebody actually goes for a fertility test, they are always told to be abstinent.
00:28And sometimes it can actually range from 2 to 3 days or between 3 to 5 days.
00:34So exactly how important is abstinence and exactly how much impact is frequency of ejaculation
00:41on the quality of semen analysis.
00:44Let's focus on the real anatomy.
00:46Physiologically, it takes between 2 to 11 days for the sperms to be matured and delivered
00:52for ejaculation in the prostate.
00:55So during that process, if you actually have a higher turnover, is that good or bad for
01:00your semen?
01:01In fact, one study specifically looked at several things.
01:05Number 1, the volume of ejaculation.
01:08Number 2, the number of sperms in the ejaculation.
01:11Number 3 is the quality such as mobility and morphology.
01:16So this study actually looked at a number of patients aged around 27 and they are healthy
01:22individuals looking at daily frequent ejaculation and what is the impact on their sperm quality.
01:30In fact, the study is interesting.
01:32After 3 to 5 days of abstinence, the patients or the volunteers has a normal level that
01:39they can actually benchmark to.
01:41After the second day of ejaculation, the number and the volume will drop by 50 to 70%.
01:49And subsequent that, despite daily ejaculation, there is no impact on the volume, the quality
01:56and also including the number and the morphology and motility.
02:01So what's that telling us is that initial part that perhaps there is a very fast depletion
02:08but following that, the body can get used to increasing the turnover.
02:13In fact, many studies actually show that when there are frequent ejaculation, the old
02:19and not so healthy sperm will be ejaculated and the new healthy sperm will be probably
02:25important for creating fertility.
02:28So in other words, frequent ejaculation in long term doesn't actually cause any impairment
02:34of your fertility but the initial phase of frequent ejaculation in the first 2 to 3 days
02:41might reduce your sperm quality by about half.
02:44For the following week, we are also debunking another myth.
02:48On this occasion, we are going to find out whether frequent ejaculation or too much sex
02:52can induce erectile dysfunction.
02:55If you are worried about too much sex might cause erectile dysfunction, clearly stay tuned
03:00for next week's Putting Dr. G on the Spot.
