On February 7, the Uttarakhand Assembly passed the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) bill. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami welcomed the passage of the bill. CM Dhami said this will set the stage for 'equitable treatment' of all residents in the BJP-ruled state. He added that UCC will give equal rights to all and rule out any kind of discrimination against any resident, be it marriage, property, inheritance or divorce. He said UCC will go a long way in "eliminating injustice and ending discrimination especially against women. The Chief Minister also spoke about the clauses for live-in couples in the state.
