00:00 WWE disagreement over where The Rock should wrestle.
00:03 All the details on WWE's game-changing Netflix deal.
00:07 And AEW facing a WCW-style crisis.
00:14 And that's it.
00:16 There's no other big stories.
00:20 Because I re-recorded the news twice yesterday.
00:23 That, you know, AEW hasn't been bought by Tesla, has it?
00:28 Or Kurt Angle's?
00:29 Or gonna become the new CEO of Amazon, is he?
00:32 Dixie Carter's not the number 30 entrant in the Royal-
00:34 Ok, right, ok.
00:37 I've just, um, just looked at the news again.
00:41 And just read that John Cena has announced he'll be retiring from WWE in the next three
00:49 years.
00:50 No, no, no, no, no!
00:51 I'm sorry, John!
00:52 I don't have the time in this video!
00:55 And that's at least a couple of years away!
00:57 Just go to WrestleTalk.com!
01:00 Go to WrestleTalk.com!
01:02 All the news is there!
01:03 There's so much news, I'm only going to talk about the news that I just listed at
01:08 the start of the video!
01:09 I'm Oli Davis, and this is WrestleTalk Newsception.
01:20 Like the 22nd July 2022, when Vince McMahon announced his retirement on Twitter, or the
01:25 3rd April 2023, when WWE announced its sale deal with Endeavor, January 23rd 2024 will
01:33 go down as one of the most important dates in modern wrestling history.
01:39 As after establishing itself as one of the most iconic fixtures in the business, watching
01:43 wrestling will never be the same again.
01:47 Vince McMahon has shaved off his creepy moustache, so in honour, this moustache breaks for you,
01:52 Vince.
01:53 Oh yeah, and Monday Night Raw got bought by Netflix.
02:21 In an expertly crafted business-business-business one-two combination, WWE announced Rock 'The
02:26 Dwayne' Johnson would be joining their parent company TKO's board of directors to then
02:31 follow it up with news that Netflix had bought the rights to Raw, which would start from
02:37 2025.
02:38 Meaning, not only did WWE have a huge business win, finalising their last remaining TV rights
02:44 negotiation after USA Network got SmackDown and The CW got NXT, they also had one of the
02:50 biggest celebrities on the planet to go round and do interviews, ensuring every single news
02:56 outlet in the world would cover the story in the best possible way.
03:00 It's easy to get dazzled, though, with Rock's beaming smile and impossible body image standard,
03:05 so here's the actual meat on the WWE/Netflix deal's bone.
03:09 Which can be summed up in one word…
03:12 MONEY.
03:13 In an update to the $400 million per year for five years deal Variety initially reported
03:17 on, which was already a huge increase on what Raw currently makes, CNBC claims the pay is
03:23 actually $500 million per year and for ten years.
03:28 Meaning in total, this is worth an insane $5 billion to WWE.
03:34 For context, the USA Network was paying around $250-$260 million per year, meaning Nick Khan
03:41 has managed to practically double Raw's rights fees.
03:44 Although that number is somewhat misleading, because it also includes all of the international
03:48 rights for places like the UK and Canada.
03:51 It was previously reported WWE was looking for a deal in the range of $400 million per
03:56 year.
03:57 An incredible 25% increase on their wildest reported dreams is the premium WWE wanted
04:03 to take - the Streaming Gamble.
04:05 The Streaming Gamble, title of your next WWE Netflix pay-per-view.
04:09 While it's for a lot of money, and could result in WWE being available to more people
04:13 globally than ever before, Raw going off traditional TV to streaming is still unprecedented.
04:19 I doubt WWE would've taken the risk if Netflix were offering in the same $400 million range
04:25 as a USA Network or WBD.
04:28 That extra $100 million per year makes it worth it.
04:32 Because WWE, masterminded by Nick Khan, have actually balanced their risk.
04:36 While Raw will be moving to Netflix, their most watched show of the last five years,
04:40 SmackDown, will be on traditional TV on the USA Network, as will NXT on the CW.
04:47 But it's not just WWE that is somewhat hedging their bets.
04:50 The deal is a huge gamble for Netflix too, as this will be their first venture into weekly
04:54 sustained live scheduled programming.
04:57 Rather ironically for a company that tore up the traditional TV model when they uploaded
05:01 the whole first season of House of Cards at the same time in 2013, creating the concept
05:06 of 'The Binge Watch', they are now attempting to stand out again in a more competitive streaming
05:11 market by going back to the habit-forming live programming of traditional broadcasts.
05:16 Which is probably why Netflix have baked a few potentially vital get out or get further
05:21 in clauses into the length of their contract.
05:24 As Brandon Thurston notes on X, TKO's SEC filing about the Netflix deal shows "Netflix
05:30 has the option to cancel the 10-year deal with WWE after just five years, and has the
05:35 option to extend the deal for an additional 10 years."
05:39 Meaning the WWE/Netflix term could end up being 5 years, 10 years or 20 years, whichever
05:47 Netflix chooses.
05:49 So if all goes well, we could be watching WrestleMania 60 on Netflix on Mars with Robot
05:53 Elon Musk.
05:54 But what day of the week would we be watching it on?
05:57 I don't really know how Mars days work.
05:59 Many noted that the WWE/Netflix announcement only ever called the flagship show Raw.
06:05 Instead of its full name, Monday Night Raw.
06:08 So as part of the heavily friendly media tour, where WWE CEO Nick Khan was interviewed by
06:12 WWE personality Pat McAfee on his ESPN podcast show, they have agents everywhere.
06:18 They're like HYDRA.
06:20 Khan spoke about the topic of some night Raw.
06:24 At this moment in time, it remains as Monday Night Raw.
06:26 We're getting a massive rating against big competition.
06:29 If we stay on Monday, it will work.
06:31 And if we move it to a different day, it will work too.
06:34 At least we know Raw will stay Monday nights for the rest of this year.
06:38 But what about those few months at the end, when they no longer have a network?
06:42 Raw's rights deal with the USA Network actually expires in October, a couple of months before
06:47 it's due to start streaming on Netflix at the start of 2025.
06:51 Variety is reporting it's still to be determined where Raw will air in those few months.
06:56 I'd imagine they agree an extension with the USA Network, as they still have a good
07:00 relationship there with SmackDown set to move to the station, and all their US streaming
07:04 content being on the same company's Peacock platform.
07:07 On that Peacock deal, it's actually in effect for at least another two years until 2026.
07:13 So that will remain the place for WWE's PLEs and video library in the US.
07:18 Internationally, from 2025, practically everything will move to Netflix.
07:23 But what about commercial breaks?
07:25 Again, the Intensive Media Tour has you covered.
07:28 It's going to be very similar to watching AEW Dynamite on Fight.
07:32 But before I get into that, here's a special message from Turbo Jack…
07:36 It's ok, maybe I don't need a loving relationship and family.
07:40 I got you, old Goldie.
07:41 My big gold belt.
07:42 My big gold belt that's definitely real.
07:44 You're all I got now.
07:46 Oh hi there!
07:47 I'm 80s wrestler Turbo Jack.

08:33 You're all I got!
08:36 Netflix's CEO Ted Sarandos hopes that the WWE deal should also add some fuel to our
08:41 new and growing ad business.
08:44 This is where you pay slightly less than Netflix each month, but you get ads served to you
08:48 while you watch - kind of like YouTube vs YouTube Premium.
08:52 CNBC reports that Netflix currently has 23 million subscribers worldwide on that tier,
08:57 so Raw will continue to structure their shows and matches around ad breaks.
09:02 Which resulted in this wonderful line from the article - I love it when real life news
09:06 outlets cover wrestling and they say things like 'the upcoming fights' - here's
09:11 CNBC's version - "matches will be scripted around commercial breaks to satisfy ad-free
09:15 customers who will see continued action from live matches that aren't important to the
09:20 outcome, such as a wrestler in a sustained headlock" according to a person familiar
09:25 with the matter.
09:26 Sustained headlock, title of your first WWE Netflix PLE.
09:29 What that means, CNBC, is that those ad breaks are going to be fricking boring.
09:34 To cap off the media tour, the company's latest addition to the board of directors
09:38 The Rock made a surprise appearance at the WWE headquarters in Stamford, Connecticut,
09:44 which WrestleVotes reported was to help celebrate a massive day for the company.
09:48 But apparently, behind the scenes, there's some disagreement on what The Rock's next
09:52 in ring step should be.
09:54 On the Day 1 edition of Raw, The Rock seemingly set up a WrestleMania 40 main event against
09:58 his tribal cousin Roman Reigns, teasing he would be sitting at the head of the table
10:03 for his dinner that night, which presumably consisted of 85 pancakes.
10:07 There hasn't been any onscreen follow up from The Rock since, and there's been various
10:12 reports saying it's up in the air for WrestleMania, as that spot was planned for a rematch between
10:16 Reigns and Cody.
10:18 One rumour even had Rock vs Reigns taking place at February's Elimination Chamber
10:22 PLE in Australia instead, although that's since been debunked.
10:26 Because really, there's a far more fitting place for The Rock to have his likely final
10:30 ever match, one that's been in the works for almost three years, not in front of 65,000
10:34 people in Australia, not at the biggest show of the year in WrestleMania.
10:39 How about…
10:41 Saudi Arabia?
10:48 According to Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio, as of January 23rd, Rock had still
10:52 not signed for a WrestleMania match.
10:55 Although it is absolutely in play, it is not a done deal.
10:59 He wants to do WrestleMania this year.
11:02 But Meltzer notes not everyone in WWE thinks WrestleMania is the way to go.
11:07 There are forces that are interested in how much value he could bring to Saudi Arabia.
11:13 He would rather do WrestleMania as it stands now.
11:15 There's balls in play, nothing is 100%.
11:18 There are people who would like to convince him, if they can make a ton of extra money
11:22 from Saudi Arabia, to do it there.
11:25 The Rock also mentioned in a media interview that day that now he is on the board of directors,
11:30 sometimes company profit - i.e. Saudi Arabia - will come before what he wants for himself
11:35 personally.
11:37 How do you think The Rock wrestling in Saudi Arabia would be received?
11:41 Let me know in the comments, where I'll be replying to people FROM OUTTA NOWHERE.
11:46 Momentum is a powerful force, as WWE just keeps having win after win after win.
11:52 AEW, despite its best efforts, is facing another canary in the coal mine stat.
11:57 The Wednesday 24th episode of AEW Dynamite had only sold less than 2,000 tickets just
12:03 one day out.
12:05 This is part of an ongoing run of declining live event ticket sales, typically a strong
12:09 indicator of how hot a promotion is.
12:12 Sure, people will continue to watch on TV week after week, but getting them out the
12:16 house to go to a show in person is a big ask.
12:19 Dave Meltzer has outlined that 4,000 is a good live attendance number for AEW.
12:25 Under 3,000 is pretty bad.
12:27 And under 2,000 is really bad, comparing it to WCW's death spiral numbers in their final
12:34 year.
12:35 More optimistically, AEW pay-per-view interest remains very strong, with their last World's
12:40 End show performing incredibly well, and the upcoming Revolution event - which will see
12:43 Sting's last ever match - has sold a very healthy 15,000+ tickets.
12:48 It's the Royal Rumble this Sunday, so go count down the 12 greatest No. 30 entrants
12:53 ever over on partsFUNknown right now.
