00:00The Rock? References New Japan? Triple H and CM Punk are best friends forever? The real
00:05reason Alexa Bliss is gone from WWE TV? And more. I'm Oli Davis, and this is the WrestleTalk
00:13News.
00:22The biggest week of the calendar year for wrestling fans, with the Hall of Fame, NXT Stand and
00:27Deliver, Eggs for Breakfast, and two nights of WrestleMania. Which means definitely two
00:33legitimate, not made up to make someone feel better, separate WrestleMania main events.
00:38CM Punk vs Seth Rollins vs Roman Reigns in a Heyman on a Paul match for Night 1, and John
00:43Cena vs Cody Rhodes for Night 2. Where, after not being seen for over a month since his shocking
00:49Cena heel turn angle at Elimination Chamber, we finally know what Rock, the final Dwayne
00:55Johnson is doing on the biggest wrestling night of the year, probably watching New Japan.
01:03Wait, what? On Saturday 12th April, The Rock posted a short video of him listening to Eric
01:09Clapton's Hey Hey while trying to figure out a Rubik's Cube puzzle, and wearing a New
01:14Japan Pro Wrestling t-shirt. And the caption, slightly intellectually intimidated, but keeping
01:19faith alive. The Rubik's Cube shows Rock is literally working on some kind of puzzle.
01:25But it could be a metaphor for a larger game, that while everyone else is playing checkers,
01:30Rock is still playing with a Rubik's Cube. His caption of keeping faith alive implies that
01:35he wants this puzzle to work out. Well, PWInsider asked around their sources and reported, no
01:42one was willing to share as to why The Rock posted wearing the New Japan shirt, but of course,
01:47he estimated he did so for a reason. What else would they say? I.e. they have no idea and
01:52The Rock does what The Rock wants to do. Or The Rock just likes watching wrestling.
01:57The previous night in Chicago saw New Japan put on their Windy City Riot show, which was
02:01the legendary Horseshoe Tanahashi's final match in the United States, before he retires
02:06at January's Wrestle Kingdom, with eerily similar timing to his US equivalent John Cena.
02:11Tanahashi put over AEW star Takeshita in the main event of the show. Perhaps Rock could just
02:16be shouting out the promotion, just like he's done in the past, once posting a photo of
02:20him training while wearing a Lucha Underground shirt in 2016.
02:25But The Rock referencing other wrestling promotions has a lot more subtext in 2025. Since early
02:302024, he has officially been on TKO's board of directors, the parent company of WWE. He
02:37is now directly involved in WWE's business decisions at the top level. And The Rock joining
02:44TKO coincided with reported New Japan moves behind the scenes in WWE. At the end of 2020,
02:51New Japan found themselves as a potential kingmaker in the global wrestling war between AEW and
02:57WWE. Back then, WWE was declining under Vince McMahon, and AEW was quickly rising, often challenging
03:04Monday Night Raw on certain ratings demographics. At the start of 2021, then WWE President Nick
03:10Khan reportedly started talks with New Japan about them officially becoming partners. Part
03:15of this would be Daniel Bryan, who hadn't yet left WWE for AEW that September, wrestling
03:21in New Japan as a WWE star. This was partly a way for WWE to keep Bryan under contract, by
03:28letting him pursue his dream of competing in a G1 Climax tournament. But it was mostly a
03:32way to cockblock AEW. At that same time, AEW were also vying to become
03:38New Japan's US wrestling partner. Their relationship had been frosty for several years, as the New
03:43Japan president Harold Mage surprisingly wasn't a fan of AEW launching with a bunch of his former
03:48top stars. But Mage left at the end of 2020. In February 2021, AEW officially announced a working
03:55relationship with New Japan, and they'd go on to run the joint Forbidden Door show from
04:00the following year. But WWE never forgot about also wanting the New Japan relationship. Not
04:05only does it give their increasingly large developmental pool more places to work, it far more crucially
04:10blocks one of the main unique selling points AEW still has over WWE. And that's why, as Fightful
04:17reported back at the start of 2024, when The Rock was first announced as the new board member
04:22for TKO, that WWE were still very much interested behind the scenes in pursuing a working relationship
04:29with New Japan. WWE has already announced a multi-year partnership with TNA, whom AEW worked
04:35with over the pandemic this year. And WWE are also aggressively counter-programming AEW and
04:41New Japan's Joint Forbidden Door show in London this August, by running a full week of live events
04:47and Raw and SmackDown tapings in the UK at the same time. This could be a multi-pronged Rubik's Cube
04:54from WWE to New Japan, with the carrots of, look how well our TNA partnership is going,
04:59and The Rock is wearing your t-shirt, and also the stick of, and if you don't work with
05:05us, we'll crush your live events by running head to head.
05:08New Japan's official Instagram account might be swayed by those likes, as they've reposted
05:12The Rock in their t-shirt with the caption, if you smell what the lion is cooking. If you
05:22watched New Japan in the 2010s, you will likely hold a disproportionate amount of excitement
05:27for anything Bullet Club related. It's still good, even now, 12 years after they first formed,
05:33and even though the faction consists of 73 complicated subdivisions. But at least a few
05:37of those names you'll recognise now. Before the Takeshita vs. Tanahashi main event on
05:42Friday's Windy City Riot, a video played from the Bullet Club Elite Young Bucks, where
05:47they challenged the Bullet Club War Dogs for the promotion's next big US show resurgence
05:52on the 9th of May. But they acknowledged War Dogs have the numbers advantage, with David
05:57Finlay, Gabe Kidd, Taiji Ishimori, Gado, Chase Owens, Clark Connors, Driller Mahoney and Jake
06:02Lee. So they teased bringing their own back up, saying,
06:06we know a couple of old OG friends who are also always willing and up for a fight. Should
06:12we call them up and talk some shiz? I think that would be too sweet. These are most likely
06:19references to the current QuizzleMania tag team champions Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson,
06:23who were released by WWE back in February. And The Rock. The Rock is also going to join
06:27the Bullet Club. An idea I still find more believable than that Triple H and CM Punk are
06:32actually friends. Punk and Hunter had quite a tumultuous relationship up until relatively
06:37recently. They found each other incredibly difficult to work with during the end of Punk's
06:41first WWE run, which ultimately ended when Punk didn't think a WrestleMania match against
06:45Triple H was a big enough deal. Triple H would then send Punk his official WWE termination
06:50papers on his wedding day. Which, just like NXT UK launching right after ITV announced World
06:56of Sport was just a coincidence. Curse you administration department!
07:00But since Punk's return in late 2023, WWE have gone out of their way to show him and
07:06Triple H as closer than ever. Including Punk being the first guest on Stephanie McMahon's
07:11new interview show. I shudder when they say nice things about each other.
07:15Triple H has now spoken more about their relationship on the High Performance podcast, where he admitted
07:20that Punk still disagrees with WWE creative. We've had a couple of moments since his return.
07:26There was one moment where he'd return and they told him something creatively and they
07:29told me, he does not like this. I was like, okay, I'll talk to him. Went and talked to
07:35him. What's going on? I told him the creative and he was like, that's good. Whatever.
07:41Levesque admitted that in Punk's first WWE run, he'd rather pull out his own teeth than
07:46have to sit in a room and go over creative with him. But now they're in a much more collaborative,
07:51open place. I was like, I know you don't like it. Everybody's told me. Let's be open.
07:57He complained about what it was, and I said, let's go sit and talk about it and come up
08:01with something good. That sort of changed. It was like a paradigm shift for us, relationship-wise.
08:07Jon Moxley to WWE return confirmed. And now it's a funny thing for me to say, sitting
08:11down and being collaborative with CM Punk is one of my favourite things in TV, because
08:16he shares a very similar view of the end of the day of the business as I do. That similar
08:21view being CAN. The same can't be said for Alexa Bliss.
08:27Before this year, she had frequently posted about not having any WWE creative plans despite
08:32being physically able to return. She finally made her comeback in the Women's Royal Rumble
08:36match in one of the loudest pops of the whole show. She was eliminated by Liv Morgan, but
08:41she hasn't been seen on TV since the Elimination Chamber six weeks ago. Fightful is reporting
08:46that WWE originally planned for Bliss' WrestleMania direction to tie in with the Wyatt Six faction.
08:52They even started dropping on-air hints, where Bray Wyatt's infamous static would interrupt
08:56Alexa's backstage segments. It was speculated that Bliss would eventually be the Wyatt Six's
09:01sixth and final member. Unfortunately, Bo Dallas had suffered an injury, and WWE decided
09:07to take the whole faction off of TV, including Bliss. The hopeful plan is that the originally planned
09:13storyline will start up again after WrestleMania. In the meantime, the former Dolph Ziggler,
09:17Nick Nemeth, has fantasy booked what Alexa could do at the biggest show of the year, Randy's
09:22opponent at Mania. For the sickos!
09:24Tonight is the WrestleMania go home episode of Raw. Adam Pearce has already announced that
09:29Seth Rollins, CM Punk Roman Reigns and Paul Heyman will all be on that show, but the other,
09:34actual main event of WrestleMania will have to wait until SmackDown, where both John Cena and
09:39Cody Rhodes are announced. But for next week's episode, the Raw after Mania, interestingly,
09:46it's only Cena who's being advertised. Not the current WWE Champion.
09:52The 21st of April Raw will take place from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas the day after
09:57WrestleMania Night 2. Both WWE and the venue's websites are advertising Jey Uso, Gunther, Liv Morgan,
10:04and Rhea Ripley as appearing on the show, along with Cena, but there isn't any mention of
10:10Cody Rhodes. Of course, card's subject to change, but WWE's own website advertising
10:16just Cena for the night after WrestleMania could imply he's winning the belt, and Cody is
10:23being ridden off TV for a bit. Remember when John Cena and The Rock were feuding though?
10:27Luke and I unfortunately do, as we watched their boring twice in a lifetime match as part of
10:32our WrestleMania 29 review. Click the video on screen to watch all three hours, 40 minutes
10:39of that. You're welcome.
