00:00 Fox banned the controversial WWE group.
00:02 Are the Young Bucks starting an anti-CM Punk storyline?
00:06 And my review of AEW Dynamite.
00:08 I'm Oli Davis, and this is the WrestleTalk News.
00:18 The early days of the pandemic forced WWE to be, what's the most polite way of saying
00:24 this, creatively bold.
00:26 With no fans in attendance, and the Thunderdome still months away, they booked things like
00:31 Stone Cold Steve Austin kicking Byron Saxton in the dick, The Street Profits and Viking
00:35 Raiders being attacked by a sea monster in a dumpster, and Rey Mysterio getting his eye
00:39 gouged out one month to be hurled to his death off the top of a building the next.
00:43 Don't worry though, there was a smaller roof underneath the roof he was thrown off
00:48 to catch him.
00:49 But it was the August 3rd, 2020 episode of Raw where Vince McMahon appeared to have totally
00:55 lost his mind.
00:56 It's easily one of the most crazy episodes of wrestling TV I've ever seen, because
01:01 it debuted two bold new ideas.
01:04 Shane McMahon's Raw Underground, a quasi-Fight Club style basement complete with sexy sexy
01:10 dancers and also…
01:13 Retribution.
01:15 The faction of masked and hooded characters invaded WWE programming, with crimes that
01:19 ranged from throwing a Molotov cocktail at an electricity generator to tipping over boxes
01:25 backstage.
01:26 It's worse.
01:27 Meanwhile, the real world had plenty of its own unrest, with protests and riots breaking
01:32 out across the Western world.
01:34 One of the real world factions in that civil unrest was Antifa, and at the time, many drew
01:39 comparisons between Antifa and Retribution.
01:42 And it turns out, with pretty good reason.
01:45 Former Retribution member Mason Madden, formerly known as Mace, formerly known as Mace, formerly
01:50 known as Dio Madden, has previously spoken about Retribution's creative beginnings.
01:55 Where somebody in WWE saw Antifa and thought "look at all those little nerds, wouldn't
02:00 they be great villains for our TV show?"
02:02 Now in a new interview with WrestlingNews.co, Madden has revealed that after the group debuted
02:07 on the Fox ad SmackDown, Fox put a stop to that real world tie-in.
02:12 When Fox, because it was on SmackDown, found out that there was an Antifa angle on SmackDown
02:17 on their Fox program, they said "hey stop", so confusion happened.
02:22 The group quickly became a more cartoon villain group, featuring go-faster stripes and supervillain
02:27 masks during the Thunderdome era of WWE, with character names that included Slapjack and
02:32 T-Bar.
02:33 But WWE isn't the only promotion that uses real life to fuel pro wrestling storylines.
02:38 Let me introduce you to…
02:42 The Young Bucks.
02:43 After returning at the end of the 10th January AEW Dynamite episode, setting themselves up
02:48 as Sting's final opponents ever for Revolution in March, they had a sit-down interview with
02:52 Renee Paquette on this week's show to establish their new heel personas.
02:57 They appear to be playing the roles of creators gone mad, obsessing over the early days of
03:02 AEW, which they founded, and how it used to be a force for good.
03:06 But that's changed as of late.
03:09 We were changing the world.
03:11 Somewhere along the way, we did lose our way.
03:14 It was like the culture shifted, and the toxicity creeped into the locker room.
03:19 The perception of the company was just different.
03:22 I think it's because we started to lean on yesterday's self-serving, superficial,
03:28 cancerous superstars.
03:31 While that could just be totally unconnected wrestling promo speak, a lot of the language
03:35 choice is very connected to their former colleague and reported brawl out opponent CM Punk.
03:41 Seth Rollins infamously called Punk a 'cancer' before his return to WWE, and Punk himself
03:46 once promised to "change the culture" on his WWE backstage debut.
03:51 Also using the word 'superstar' rather than 'wrestler' is more of a WWE terp.
03:56 The Bucks made it clear they were not talking about Sting, their opponent for the pay-per-view,
04:01 and then promised to take out any similar people after they'd retired Sting, potentially
04:05 using their opponents as storyline proxies for their frustrations with Punk.
04:10 CM Punk to AEW confirmed.
04:23 And now a word from this video's sponsor!
04:25 Wow, I can't believe I've watched everything on every available streaming service.
04:30 I wonder what I'll do now?
04:34 I'm sure my computer doesn't need any added protection.
04:38 Cybercriminals are a myth.
04:44 And I've done it!
04:45 I've hacked into the Chinese government servers, and now to mess around a bit.
04:52 Uh, hey guys, everything alright?
04:58 I've got no more content to watch.
05:00 I've realised that cybercriminals are very real, and my data is unprotected.
05:03 I've hacked into the Chinese government and I didn't protect my IP address, I just
05:07 wanted to mess around a bit.
05:09 Guys, guys, guys, it sounds like you need Surfshark VPN.
05:13 Surfshark VPN?
05:14 No, it's Surfshark VPN, it's a really big brand, can't believe you haven't heard
05:26 of them.
05:27 Surfshark will let you watch shows that are content restricted in your country, they'll
05:30 protect your data and your IP address, and you can get an exclusive Surfshark VPN winter
05:35 deal.
05:36 Use promo code WrestleTalk to get up to 6 additional months for free using our link
05:40 in the description.
05:41 Wow, Sullivan, you just saved us all from a horrible fate!
05:44 Don't thank me, boys.
05:47 Thanks, Surfshark VPN.
05:50 Use the code WrestleTalk.
05:55 Now it's time for my review of AEW Dynamite… in about 5 minutes.
06:00 After a promo package hyping up Samoa Joe vs Hook to open the show, consider this guy
06:05 HOOKED.
06:06 I wish I had his hair.
06:13 Maybe I could just transplant more hair onto my head.
06:15 The action kicked off first with Christian vs Dustin Rhodes for the TNT title.
06:20 They had a really good back and forth match.
06:22 Rhodes got almost as much offence in as he did against Swerve Strickland at World's
06:26 End, even after his ankle was shattered with a cinder block.
06:28 Which is to say, a surprising amount of offence.
06:31 But it worked great here against Christian's heel shenanigans, mostly comprised of Nick
06:35 Wayne interference.
06:36 Dustin got a nearfall so close off a cross Rhodes, I nearly had to call 2.999 for the
06:42 VAR police.
06:43 Is that how sports works?
06:44 Rhodes managed to kick out of a spearing killswitch combo, but Christian hit a second killswitch
06:49 to win.
06:50 When they spoke to Swerve Strickland backstage, who cut an awesome promo putting over Hangman,
06:54 saying Paige would have a chance at wrestling God, JBL to AEW confirmed.
06:58 But Swerve's beaten him twice already, and he has no desire to do it again.
07:02 You're not convincing anyone, Swerve.
07:04 Just kiss already.
07:05 Renee then interviewed Jericho, who was angry with the Callous family for Powerhouse Hobbs
07:09 costing him and Sammy Guevara the tag team titles.
07:12 Enter Matt Sydal to challenge Jericho with the overly keen energy of a musical theatre
07:16 kid who can't really act, but can sing amazingly.
07:19 So they keep him around.
07:21 This isn't you Jericho.
07:22 I know you better than that.
07:24 I know you better.
07:26 The Best Friends beat Penta and Commander in a fun match, with Trank continuing to show
07:30 his more aggressive side.
07:32 This segment was more about the angle afterwards, though, as the Undisputed Kingdom's Roderick
07:36 Strong went face to face with the International Champion he's promised to defeat.
07:41 Orange Cassidy, in his aloof way, said "I'll defend it right now", giving Strong a big
07:45 advantage.
07:46 Cassidy had just wrestled a match.
07:48 Roddy is completely fresh.
07:50 Instead of accepting though Strong, said he'll wait until the Revolution pay-per-view on
07:54 the 3rd March - 45 days away - to make Cassidy mentally suffer.
08:00 This motivation didn't work at all for me.
08:02 Firstly, do you even know what an Orange Cassidy is?
08:05 His whole gimmick is not caring.
08:07 But perhaps there's a story to tell there where Strong does slowly get in his head.
08:11 Second though, and more importantly, the Undisputed Kingdom told me they're going to change
08:16 AEW.
08:17 Right now, that's happening at an almost imperceptible pace.
08:20 In lieu of Adam Cole being an active wrestler, I would've had Strong win the International
08:24 title by now to get over their threat.
08:27 And Strong's reason for stalling and not taking the advantage here being mind games
08:32 is generic wrestling.
08:33 He could've instead said it's to make more money on the bigger show, clearly separating
08:38 his faction's motivation from the more babyface winning titles goals.
08:42 Renee spoke to Hangman Page backstage, who said he does not think about Swerve at all
08:46 - I'M NOT THINKING ABOUT HIM, OK - when he so obviously does.
08:50 Mark Briscoe led an incredibly touching tribute to his brother Jay, who tragically passed
08:54 a year ago.
08:55 His niece was in the car accident that killed Jay, and doctors said she wouldn't walk
08:59 again.
09:00 But Mark welcomed her out, and she walked in by herself.
09:04 AEW are very good at sincerely honouring stories like this.
09:08 Then we got the brilliant Young Bucks interview, where they established their new heel characters
09:12 and make him not-so-subtle allusions to CM Punk in the process.
09:16 In a later short film promo, Sting and Darby Allin announced they wanted to win the tag
09:20 team championships, so expect them to beat Ricky Starks and Big Bill to have those belts
09:24 on the line for the Bucks match.
09:26 Speaking of titles that need rehabbing, the Ring of Honor six-man belts changed hands
09:30 next when the Gang Bang Gang beat, erm… let me just check…
09:37 The Mogul Embassy.
09:39 They were the champions.
09:40 Brian Cage and the Gates of Agony.
09:42 This was a really fun, frankly weird match, as it had Jay White working babyface.
09:47 He even got a hot tag run, and he's really good at it, connecting with the crowd.
09:51 Just thought I'd never see White as a good guy.
09:53 In a nice story beat, Anthony Bowen stopped Prince NaNa interfering, letting White hit
09:57 the Blade Runner to win and become the new champions.
10:00 I'm interested to see how this will further Bullet Club Gold's frenemy relationship
10:04 with the acclaimed, and how it'll debut a new set of 12-man tag titles.
10:08 Adam Cole hyped up Wardlow backstage in the Undisputed weighting game.
10:12 Then it was time for the compulsory quarterpast the second hour women's match.
10:16 Deonna Purrazzo and Toni Storm maximised their limited minutes, with Deonna tapping out Anna
10:20 J in her awesome Venus de Milo finisher, and Toni joking on commentary.
10:24 Top Flight and Private Party had a decent tag, initially based on mutual respect of
10:28 either side having a partner out with injury for ages, for it to turn sour when Mark Quinn
10:32 hooked the rope to get the heel pin.
10:34 It's a good bit of substance for the undercard.
10:36 And the main event saved the best for last.
10:40 One of my favourite matches of the year already.
10:43 Samoa Joe defending his AEW World title against Hook.
10:48 Feeling big time from the start with the entrances and the ring introductions, Joe's first
10:53 title defence captured the best of Joe from TNA for me - which is the best Joe has ever
10:57 been - a violent, swaggering, unbeatable monster.
11:03 He hit a Sikorin Agi on Hook on the corner of the announcer's table, then strutted
11:07 around the ring as everyone chanted Joe.
11:09 Hook then put both middle fingers up at him, so Joe powerbombed him on the ring apron.
11:13 Joe never looked in trouble.
11:15 Hook always looked in trouble, yet somehow they both looked absolutely awesome in every
11:20 single moment of this match.
11:22 Joe's snap powerslam kick out at two.
11:24 Joe's Death Valley Driver kick out at two.
11:27 Joe's Muscle Buster finisher kick out at one.
11:30 Hook had a comeback so good and well-timed, it might propel him back to where he should've
11:34 been a year ago with adequate follow-up.
11:36 AEW really could have Lightning in a bottle with him.
11:39 Joe eventually made him pass out, though, in the Coquina Clutch.
11:42 Hook kept standing up afterwards, showing his heart, so Joe would keep hitting Muscle
11:46 Buster after Muscle Buster.
11:48 This brought down Hangman Page for the save and revealed Swerve lurking in the crowd,
11:52 and the reality of title defences seemed to start dawning on Joe's trembling face.
11:57 The crowd continued to chant 'Swerve's house' as Strickland and Hangman stared
12:02 at each other after pretending this whole episode they want nothing to do with each
12:06 other.
12:07 When all they really want to do is make sweet, sweet love.
12:09 I mean fight.
12:10 I mean fight.
12:11 Calm down, Oli, those Tumblr shipping days are behind you.
12:14 This was a fantastic episode.
12:16 This week's Dynamite is 92%.
12:18 But there was a crisis backstage at this week's Raw.
