00:05 Japan's annual crisis where everyone could leave.

00:13 I'm Oli Davis, and this is the WrestleTalk News.

00:23 All In 2023 wasn't just a milestone for AEW's growth, it was a milestone in wrestling

00:28 history - a huge indicator that we're living through a genuine pro wrestling boom period.

00:35 The secondary company set a new paid attendance record for the whole business.

00:40 But like many of AEW's crowning achievements over the last year and a half, it was immediately

00:44 undermined by backstage shenanigans.

00:47 Following a previously reported backstage confrontation between Jungle Boy Jack Perry

00:51 and CM Punk at an episode of Collision, where Punk stopped Perry from using real glass in

00:55 a weapon spot because "that's a needless risk" so far.

00:59 So sensible, Perry used the limo's windscreen glass in his All In match, looking directly

01:04 into the camera and saying "you know what this is right here?

01:08 Real glass.

01:10 Go cry me a river."

01:11 Punk reportedly responded to this, being very safety conscious and wanting to create a protective

01:16 behind-the-scenes atmosphere, by getting in an actual fight with Perry as soon as he got

01:20 backstage.

01:21 But Punk was punished by being swiftly fired with cause by AEW, where he would show up

01:27 in WWE several months later, become one of the most popular people in wrestling again,

01:32 likely set up to win the Royal Rumble, main event a WrestleMania in the next couple of

01:36 years and make loads of money.

01:38 Let that be a lesson to you, kids.

01:40 Your actions have consequences.

01:42 But while Punk showed up on Survivor Series, and then Raw, and then SmackDown, Jungle Boy

01:48 has been nowhere to be seen.

01:50 During his backstage altercation with Punk in August, Perry was suspended indefinitely

01:55 by AEW.

01:56 There was speculation he could be making his return as the Devil that was tormenting MJF,

02:01 but that was revealed to be Adam Cole at December 30th's World's End.

02:05 In the five months since, there's been no update on Perry's actual AEW status.

02:11 So he's just shown up in another wrestling promotion instead.

02:14 Making his first appearance in the 139 days since All In, Perry jumped the rail after

02:20 the opening match at New Japan's Battle of the Valley show on the 13th January, attacking

02:25 Shota Umino.

02:26 He then got into the ring, produced his AEW contract from his pocket, and tore it in two.

02:33 He treats his paper even worse than he treats his glass.

02:36 He then put on an armband with 'The Scapegoat' written on it, a likely reference to Perry

02:42 being used as 'The Scapegoat' for CM Punk.

02:45 A reference that falls apart, though, when you remember Punk got fired for it, he was

02:49 his own goat.

02:50 New Japan World's X account posted the clip only referring to Perry as 'The Scapegoat',

02:55 implying this could be Jungle Boy's new name in that promotion.

02:59 But what does this mean for him in AEW?

03:01 F4WOnline writes that Perry's current AEW status is unknown, and that he filed for several

03:07 trademarks in December, including Jungle Boy, Jurassic Express and a boy and his dinosaur

03:14 - the latter two being names he used for his tag team with Luchasaurus.

03:17 I mean Kill Switch, don't hurt me daddy!

03:20 Typically, filing for trademarks is a precursor to wrestlers trying to leave the promotions

03:25 they're contracted to, before they go out to make it on their own in other companies

03:28 with their own intellectual property.

03:31 So that's it, Jungle Boy has quit AEW.

03:33 Or maybe they just ended up firing him.

03:36 Whatever happened, all we know is that Jack Perry is no longer All Elite.

03:45 Just one more thing, Perry didn't return at a AAA show or an NXT event.

03:51 He did this in New Japan, whom AEW has a strong working relationship, with Jon Moxley and

03:57 Eddie Kingston both wrestling on this same show.

04:00 New Japan would not allow a wrestler to disrespect such a valued partner unless it was pre-approved.

04:06 Them letting Perry tear up his AEW contract on air heavily implies this is all a big Worky

04:12 McWorkface.

04:13 That doesn't necessarily mean Perry will show up on AEW anytime soon, though.

04:18 Perhaps Tony Khan is hoping New Japan can be a kind of gimmick rehab for Jungle Boy,

04:23 where he can win back fans he might've alienated back in August, building support so when he

04:27 does return to AEW, he's the most over he can possibly be.

06:00 New Japan New Japan talent contracts mostly seem to run from January to January.

06:05 A smart idea to optimise HR procedures.

06:08 You can roll out all the new documentation in one fell swoop, and you don't have to

06:12 worry about doing it again for another year.

06:15 The problem is, that means everyone's contracts come due at the same time.

06:20 Top star Will Ospreay has already announced he's signed with AEW, or he's set to start

06:24 once his New Japan dates have finished.

06:26 Longtime OG Bullet Club member Tama Tonga said January will be his last month in New

06:31 Japan, immediately following him winning the Never Openweight Championship at WrestleKingdom

06:36 on January 4th.

06:37 Fightful Select is reporting "practically all of the Bullet Club War Dogs faction have

06:42 either had their contracts expired already or are expiring by the end of this month",

06:47 with Clark Connors, Alex Cochran, Gabriel Kidd and Trela Maloney having their deals

06:52 up in January.

06:53 And the biggest of all, the ace of New Japan himself Kazuchika Okada is set to become a

06:58 free agent at the end of the month, where there is reportedly significant interest

07:03 in him from WWE.

07:05 In a new development, Okada has also done a Jungle Boy, vying to trademark his Rainmaker

07:10 nickname, a sign he could be looking at a career outside of New Japan.

07:15 The Wrestling Observer Newsletter is reporting that Tonga, along with several other foreigners,

07:19 are looking to leave New Japan when their contracts expire in January, and that "it

07:24 is going to be harder and harder for New Japan to keep top foreign talent because of the

07:28 huge discrepancy in pay between New Japan with WWE and AEW."

07:33 New Japan is entering a new phase, with Hiroshi Tanahashi taking over as the promotion's

07:38 president.

07:39 One of the first things he's got to do is start spreading out these contract expiration

07:43 dates over the course of the year, as having them all come due in the same month not only

07:47 means New Japan is at sudden risk of losing half their main event scene - like we already

07:52 saw back in 2016 when WWE signed AJ Styles, Karl Anderson, Luke Gallows and Shinsuke Nakamura,

07:59 and when AEW formed in 2019, taking with them Kenny Omega, The Young Bucks and more - but

08:05 it means they'll end up having to spend way more money to keep any talent, as their

08:09 negotiating position will be severely hampered by everyone knowing what a mess they're

08:14 in.

08:15 It's only a month away when WWE have the most famous 'let's have some new signings'

08:19 show.

08:20 All of New Japan to Royal Rumble confirmed.

08:22 The Wrestling Observer is reporting that both Sheamus and Xavier Woods are expected back

08:26 over the next few weeks after being out injured, and PWInsider writes Sonya Deville has been

08:30 training at the Performance Center recently to get ready for a return.

08:34 Sheamus, Woods and Sonya Deville Royal Rumble return confirmed.

08:37 There's also the news that Trinity, the former Naomi in WWE, has dropped her Knockouts

08:41 Championship to Jordan Grace at TNA's Hard To Kill, fuelling rumours she'll also be

08:46 returning for the Royal Rumble.

08:48 But what's Lee Bay doing in the Impact Zone?
