00:34 Matt Riddle has started 2024 with New Year, New Post WWE.

00:41 Following his WWE release in September, he made his MLW debut at January 6th's Kings

00:46 of Coliseum show, defeating Jacob Fatu.

00:49 And a vignette played for him at New Year's Dash announcing his New Japan debut on the

00:54 13th January's Battle in the Valley.

00:56 He'll then be entering a programme with the promotion's President Hiroshi Tanahashi

01:00 for his TV title at New Beginning in Sapporo.

01:03 But just like Ian and that time he blew Grandad's inheritance on Bored Apes NFTs, conversation

01:09 is dominated by what Riddle could've made of himself in the past.

01:13 Because it's time for our new segment 'Times Matt Riddle Didn't Win Stuff'.

01:18 According to Matt Riddle.

01:22 During a virtual sign-on appearance for Signed by Superstars, Riddle revealed how he was

01:27 supposed to win the terrible 2022 Men's Royal Rumble match.

01:31 And he would've gotten away with it too, if it wasn't for that pesky Brock Lesnar.

01:36 Riddle claims he was told that "I was going to win the Rumble and everything else."

01:41 But because The Beast Incarnate had already lost to Bobby Lashley in a singles match earlier

01:45 that night, the No. 30 entrant Lesnar just decided he was going to win instead.

01:51 Brock came in, didn't want to do business with everybody, said he was winning, and then

01:55 he won.

01:56 Like, none of the producers, nobody, stood up to him and they let him do it.

02:01 I didn't either.

02:02 A report from PWInsider at the time seemingly corroborates this, who wrote Riddle was a

02:07 frontrunner to win the match until a late change.

02:10 Orton was also considered to win at 1.2.

02:13 Just as a reminder, this was the Rumble booked by Shane McMahon.

02:17 A creative failure so bad, Shane screwed up his own entrance return, threw a strop backstage,

02:22 and was then reportedly fired from his own dad's company the following week.

02:28 Dave Meltzer has disputed Riddle's version of events on Wrestling Observer Radio, reporting

02:32 WWE officials have denied he was ever seriously considered to win any Royal Rumble match ever.

02:39 While some were fans of his backstage, he also "had many enemies", which Riddle

02:43 had made with his frequent controversies and outspoken comments against the likes of Lesnar

02:49 and Goldberg.

02:50 There was another report at the time that claimed Lesnar had been scheduled to win the

02:54 2022 Rumble for weeks in advance.

02:56 But that's not the only time Riddle and Lesnar have found their fates entwining backstage.

03:02 The two encountered each other several years beforehand at the 2020 Royal Rumble.

03:07 Not yet a match Riddle has claimed he was going to win.

03:09 At the time, Pro Wrestling Sheet - remember them - reported Lesnar and Riddle were involved

03:14 in a verbal backstage altercation before the event.

03:18 Details are scarce at this time, but sources tell us Lesnar and Riddle passed each other

03:22 while walking backstage, and the tense encounter ensued.

03:26 One source says Brock saw Matt and wanted him to know the reality of the situation between

03:31 them.

03:32 TalkSport then reported exactly what Lesnar told Riddle in the interaction.

03:36 "Kid, you might as well stop saying my name and tagging me s*** because you and I will

03:41 never work together, ever."

03:44 Lesnar is thought to be referring to many public interviews and tweets Riddle have made,

03:49 calling out Lesnar, criticising his work rate and saying he should be the one to retire

03:54 him.

03:55 Pro Wrestling Sheet finished their report saying "we do know things did not get physical

03:59 between the two."

04:01 About five months later, Riddle confirmed as much in an interview to Ariel Helwani.

04:05 "Let's just say he came up to me with a security guard, not that he needed the security

04:09 guard.

04:10 He came up to me, put his arm around me and told me we were never going to work.

04:14 So I shouldn't mention his name or talk about him or anything like that.

04:18 And I should not call him out on social media.

04:20 And I said, 'Whatever you want, bro.'"

04:23 Perhaps Brock also made his feelings clear to WWE management, as despite getting somewhat

04:28 of a push at the time, Riddle entered the Rumble match at No. 23 and was really quickly

04:33 eliminated by Baron Corbin.

04:34 But now Riddle has spoken more about that interaction in his signed by Superstars interview,

04:40 revealing that foe-friendly arm around the shoulder was actually "a likely terrifying

04:45 Lesnar grabbing him by the back of the neck."

04:47 "So I'm at Royal Rumble, my first time on the main roster, I'm super stoked.

04:52 And I see Brock Lesnar and he walks next to me.

04:56 And I'm like, 'what's up dude?'

04:58 You know, like, 'hey.'

04:59 And all of a sudden his security guard, who I'm good friends with now, came up behind

05:04 us.

05:05 He goes, 'you need help with this?'

05:06 And I'm like, 'what?'

05:08 And then Brock grabs me by the neck.

05:10 And he didn't like drag though, but he grabbed me by the neck and then proceeded to tell

05:16 me we would never work together and then keep my f-ing mouth shut."

05:21 Said to have one of the best wrestling business minds around, it's actually out of character

05:25 for Brock to not put his feelings to one side to work a programme with Riddle.

05:29 Perhaps he just thought him vs Riddle wouldn't make him enough money.

06:41 But it does lack any storyline or historic motivation.

06:44 So enter Fightful Select with the real reason.

06:50 Sting reportedly has a lot to say in deciding who his final opponent or opponents will be.

07:05 If only all former main event mafia members were so lucky.

07:07 He's keen to do more tag matches than singles, as he's limited in what he can do by himself,

07:12 so it appears Sting has chosen the Bucks as his final match.

07:16 Giving Sting a proper retirement is said to be a high priority for AEW President Tony

07:20 Khan, which includes getting Ric Flair in his corner for his final run.

07:24 Flair is reportedly not currently considered for any physical spots, but he's been actively

07:28 pushing to do them.

07:29 As foreshadowed by their heel tantrums last November, the Bucks are reportedly changing

07:34 their gimmick from their previous Elite Babyface act.

07:37 It's been rumoured they'll be joined by Brandon Cutler and Colt Cabana in a new faction.

07:41 And they're not the only wrestling act getting re-gimmicked.

07:44 Triple Votes is reporting there were plans in place to name the Bobby Lashley Street

07:48 Profits faction on last week's SmackDown, which got axed at the last second for unknown

07:53 reasons.

07:54 I'm told those plans are still tentative, as the direction of the trio could be shifting.

07:59 The planned name for the group is The Pride, a report Montez Ford has reacted to by tagging

08:05 Lashley and Angelo Dawkins in a picture of three lions.

08:09 The change in plans that stopped them finally getting a name could be the debut of another

08:12 faction carrying Kross and AOP, who attack them on the episode.
