00:51 All right, today I am joined by a special guest,
00:53 a man who's trying to keep the streets of Ann Arbor safe
00:56 'cause it's pandemonium out there.
00:58 All right, this guy is a former
00:59 American football offensive lineman.
01:02 All right, he played college football
01:04 as an offensive guard at a very proud university
01:06 known as Michigan from 1994 to 1996.
01:09 He's the host of the Winged Helmet Show, Mr. Thomas Gines.
01:13 How you doing, my friend?
01:14 - Hey, what's going on, good brother, how are you?
01:16 - Dude, life is great.
01:18 You're part of law enforcement.
01:20 People are, shall we say, celebrating in Ann Arbor right now.
01:23 So how's that going for you
01:25 trying to keep the streets safe, so to speak?
01:29 - Everything's going pretty well right now.
01:31 A lot of our partners, a lot of our law enforcement partners
01:33 from University Police, Ann Arbor Police,
01:36 I work for the Sheriff's Office here,
01:38 so everybody's kind of been applying
01:40 a little bit of mutual aid.
01:42 Kind of the one big thing that's helped out a little bit,
01:45 we had some snow overnight,
01:46 so this kind of slowed some of the festivities down.
01:48 But overall right now, everything for the most part
01:51 has been relatively in a celebratory fashion
01:54 and pretty orderly thus far.
01:56 So we're hoping that we continue
01:57 to represent the university
02:00 in the light that it wants to be represented in,
02:02 should be represented in,
02:03 and the proud history that we have.
02:06 And let's go out here and have that good, clean fun
02:08 and keep the shenanigans to a minimum.
02:10 Obviously, we're gonna have some of those outliers
02:12 that wanna test the water, so to speak,
02:15 and obviously they will be dealt with
02:16 in a humane fashion, if you will.
02:21 But other than that, man,
02:22 the student body has done a really good job.
02:25 We have some big events coming up this Saturday
02:28 when the team comes back over at Chrysler Arrhenius,
02:30 so that's gonna be a great time there.
02:32 But right now, it's business as usual,
02:35 and it's what you expect any large university
02:39 to be going through after winning
02:40 a national championship in any sport.
02:42 - All right, man, Michigan finishes 15-0.
02:44 They win the national championship.
02:46 They beat the Huskies of Washington 34-13.
02:48 I just wanna talk briefly about this
02:50 and get your thoughts on this game
02:52 because Michigan jumps out to a quick 14-0.
02:56 Lee Donovan Edwards over 100 yards rushing
02:58 on just six carries, 17.3 yards per carry.
03:01 Two early TD runs puts the Wolverines up.
03:03 Michigan bullies Washington.
03:05 They had more rush yards, 303,
03:07 than Washington had total yards, 301.
03:11 They also outscored the Huskies 14-0 in the fourth quarter.
03:14 They outscored Washington in the first
03:16 and fourth quarter combined, 28-3.
03:19 All right, talk to me about what Jim Harbaugh
03:21 has built up there in Michigan,
03:23 why he's been so successful,
03:25 and what this team's all about.
03:27 - I think the first thing that Coach Harbaugh has done,
03:29 he's done an exemplary job
03:31 of building his assistant coaching staff.
03:34 He's went out and found some young guns,
03:36 some former players, some guys I actually coached.
03:39 Because of that youth and their ability
03:42 to relate to these young men, i.e. once they get there,
03:46 and again, along the recruiting trail,
03:48 I think that has paid huge dividends for us.
03:51 And then just the overall development
03:54 that has taken place right now.
03:55 We go out, we get really good kids, right?
03:58 We have great assistant coaches,
04:00 but just the character of the young men
04:02 that we go out and get speaks volumes.
04:06 I look back at the Rose Bowl
04:08 when we got ready to play Alabama,
04:09 and it caused me some pause,
04:11 just based off of Alabama's overall athleticism.
04:15 Not whether or not, you know, were they the better team,
04:17 but I just looked at the athletes.
04:20 And again, maybe I was a little bit swayed
04:22 just based off of the history and the pedigree of the tide.
04:27 But when I went out and re-watched that game,
04:32 and I saw the cohesiveness
04:35 that the Michigan Wolverines brought to the table,
04:38 we beat Alabama, maybe not because we had the best athletes,
04:42 but we had the best overall team that day.
04:45 When you go back and you listen to a lot of these guys,
04:48 you listen to a Blake or a JJ,
04:51 some of our older offensive linemen
04:52 that have been here for a while,
04:53 these guys came back because they've been on the mountain,
04:58 they just didn't get to the mountaintop,
05:01 i.e. the last two seasons in the CFP.
05:03 So when those young men came back, they looked inward,
05:08 they looked the man in the mirror in the eye,
05:09 and they looked their teammates in the eye.
05:11 And they came out here and said
05:12 that we are going to play for each other.
05:14 I am not here for selfish gains and/or wants.
05:18 I am here because of the fact that my brothers,
05:20 my teammates, my university, my program
05:24 deserves to win the national championship.
05:26 And that is what has carried this team
05:29 through this tumultuous year, actually,
05:31 with all the outside shenanigans and chicanery
05:35 that has taken place thus far,
05:37 just with the whole coaching situation
05:39 and NCAA things of that nature.
05:41 But overall, the thing that to me is most beautiful
05:45 is not the X's and O's, and it's not the play on the field.
05:49 It's really just how these young men related to each other
05:53 and laid it all on the line for each other.
05:55 Some of these guys could have took a shot
05:57 and went to the league, but instead they came back,
06:00 risked possible injury career, injuries,
06:05 to come back and win a national championship
06:07 with their brothers and for this university.
06:09 So it was a beautiful thing to watch.
06:11 - When I watch, and you mentioned JJ McCarthy coming back,
06:14 and he's got that decision again right now,
06:16 going into next year.
06:17 You talked about Blake Corum,
06:18 'cause he was coming off of the knee injury.
06:21 Donovan Edwards is the guy that sticks out to me the most.
06:23 He knew he wasn't gonna be the guy.
06:25 He could have transferred to 99% of schools
06:27 and been the guy, just like he will probably be next year.
06:30 Well, he will be next year.
06:32 Okay, but it's interesting,
06:33 because when I think of Michigan football,
06:35 take athleticism out of it.
06:36 You make a great point.
06:37 I think they're just the best coached football team
06:41 in America, 'cause it's interesting you brought up
06:43 recruiting and athleticism, 'cause I did a dive onto this.
06:47 The last four years, Michigan does not rank in the top five,
06:50 does not rank in the top 10.
06:52 They have the 12th ranked recruiting class on average
06:55 over the last four years.
06:56 Alabama, you mentioned them, 1.5.
06:59 It's either one or two every year, them or Georgia.
07:03 Ohio State, who Michigan has bullied three years in a row,
07:06 top five recruiting class every year.
07:08 Okay, and right now, they're the only school in the Big 10.
07:11 Okay, well, there's one other school in the Big 10
07:13 with a five-star player,
07:14 but Ohio State has five five-star players.
07:16 The rest of the Big 10 combined,
07:18 and Michigan is not one of them, has zero.
07:21 So I'm curious to see how that plays out going forward.
07:23 But here's the deal.
07:24 And Ohio State's average recruiting class ranking
07:26 over the past four years is 3.75, so between third and fourth.
07:31 Yet Michigan, 3-0 the last three years versus the Buckeyes,
07:34 beat Alabama in the Rose Bowl
07:35 and played god-awful on special teams, and still won.
07:38 - Right, right. - Versus the Buckeyes.
07:40 Michigan averaged 235 rush yards a game, Ohio State 104.
07:43 Wolverines, over six yards per carry.
07:45 The Buckeyes just over three, a little over half.
07:48 And in the second half of those games,
07:50 Michigan has outscored the Buckeyes 72,
07:53 those last three games, to 31, more than two to one.
07:56 What has Harbaugh done when it comes to coaching
08:00 that makes it so good there?
08:02 Okay, 'cause you've talked about some of the other things,
08:04 but specifically at coaching football,
08:07 what makes him so good at that?
08:08 - I think because Jimmy is a big kid at heart.
08:13 When you see him out there throwing the peel around with JJ
08:17 on the interception side of things,
08:19 he jumps in the pile, throws the buffs on.
08:21 It's about the relatability that the student athlete has,
08:27 not only to their position coach, but to their head coach.
08:29 There is a lot of times that you will see where,
08:33 I don't know how it is at Alabama, I'm only guessing,
08:36 but if you take a Nick Saban,
08:38 Nick Saban, to me, does not come across
08:41 as the most accessible coach,
08:45 as far as just being able to talk to him one-on-one, right?
08:50 And to establish that real rapport.
08:54 I think Jimmy, having been down at the building
08:57 several times and I'm watching how he interacts
08:59 with the players, Jimmy has that.
09:02 Jimmy has that open door policy.
09:05 The other piece to it as well is,
09:09 I think that when we kind of got out of,
09:13 well, this is how it's always been done here at Michigan,
09:16 and started to embrace some of the newness of the game,
09:20 if you will, that's when things really started to take off.
09:23 You bring in a young coach in Sherone Moore,
09:26 D1 athlete, offensive lineman at Oklahoma,
09:30 and just the job that he has done.
09:32 You're coaching the offensive line,
09:33 and as a former offensive lineman,
09:35 I do a radio show here in Ann Arbor,
09:37 bottom line with Thomas Gwines,
09:40 where I'm specifically just talking to the line play.
09:42 And it's been years that I've been tough on the boys.
09:47 Just calling a spade a spade, if you will.
09:49 Even this year, we had our troubles,
09:54 but the one thing that I'm most excited about was,
09:59 I started to see the gradual improvement.
10:02 This is a group of guys that didn't come in
10:04 in the same class.
10:06 We got two to three starters right now
10:09 that were from the transfer portal.
10:11 And so the time in which these five young men were together,
10:15 now you had Zinsser out, 53 comes in,
10:19 and does a great job at the right tackle spot.
10:22 And so you kind of had some moving pieces here,
10:25 but we eventually got the cohesiveness
10:27 and the galvanization, if you will,
10:30 from this offensive line.
10:31 I've always been a big proponent,
10:33 not just 'cause I'm an offensive lineman.
10:35 As so your offensive line goes,
10:36 typically your team goes.
10:38 At Michigan, that is how it has always been.
10:40 One of the reasons why I came here.
10:42 Michigan was an O-line school.
10:43 They called Penn State linebacker U,
10:45 I called the University of Michigan O-line.
10:48 Because of that, we've gotten back to the toughness
10:52 and not wanting to play finesse football.
10:54 And understanding winning the war of attrition,
10:56 winning up front, that third quarter,
10:59 about midway through, you keep leaning on these guys.
11:03 And I mean, you play, you know how it is.
11:07 On both sides of the ball, if the defensive front seven
11:10 is just giving it to the O-line,
11:11 and you see that opposing lineman
11:14 looking up at the clock like,
11:15 Jesus, how much more do we have to be out here?
11:17 How much more of this butt kicking do I have to take?
11:20 We started to get back to that.
11:22 You mentioned Ohio State.
11:24 In years past, you would hear guys say,
11:26 yeah, we're ready, we're gonna win.
11:28 Sometimes I just thought that was lip service.
11:31 Right now, we really believe that.
11:34 I think beating Alabama, yeah, we're gonna beat the SEC,
11:37 we're gonna beat Georgia, beat 'em,
11:38 whatever the case may be.
11:40 Again, I kind of thought we were whistling in a graveyard.
11:42 Right now, I really feel like we believe that.
11:46 And that's some of the biggest changes,
11:48 is that these guys truly believe
11:50 in what it is that they're doing.
11:52 They are students of their craft.
11:55 They work their butts off.
11:56 They conduct themselves in the right way.
11:59 And so Jimmy has changed some of that culture.
12:02 I left under Coach Carr.
12:04 A few years after that, we had Brady Hoke,
12:07 and we had Rich Rod, and we had those iterations,
12:11 and some things have changed.
12:12 I call some of that the Adidas era.
12:14 We're getting out of the Adidas era,
12:18 and Nike/Juntman, and we're, again,
12:21 we are recultivating that culture
12:24 that was down at Schoenbecker Hall, and here in Ann Arbor,
12:27 and getting us back to the right mindset
12:29 of being tough up front, both sides of the ball,
12:32 and then being explosive, and being athletic enough
12:35 to take the top off, or either to break those big runs.
12:38 We're either gonna hit you a triple, or get you a home run.
12:41 So these are things in which,
12:42 to bring this full circle to your question,
12:45 Coach Harbaugh, I think the biggest thing
12:48 that he has done is culture.
12:50 It's not about Xs and Os, right?
12:52 If you're a smart guy, you understand football,
12:55 you can coach, but you also have to now be able
12:59 to get into the psyche of these young men,
13:01 and get them really to buy into what it is that,
13:04 whatever it is that you're selling.
13:06 And I believe these young men have jumped
13:08 into the deep end of the pool with both feet,
13:11 and have fully emerged themselves,
13:14 and what it means to be a Michigan Wolverine.
13:16 And right now, we are seeing the fruits of their labor.
13:19 - So I have always said,
13:21 offense puts butts in the seats,
13:23 defense wins games, the trenches wins championships.
13:26 I've been consistent with that for years.
13:28 Now, I'm gonna preface what I'm about to say,
13:30 by saying the NFL is a completely different game
13:34 from a coaching perspective than college football.
13:36 Okay, Harbaugh is one of the few that's had success at both.
13:40 Okay, you got Jimmy Johnson, you got Carroll,
13:42 but Harbaugh is one of the few.
13:44 But you brought up Saban, and by the way,
13:45 congrats to Saban on a phenomenal career.
13:48 - Well deserved.
13:49 - Yes, absolutely.
13:51 Who's gonna be the next Bama coach?
13:52 I think we'll have that answer actually
13:53 much sooner than later.
13:55 But I bring him up again,
13:56 because when I went through the Rams,
13:59 I played with about three or four guys
14:01 who had just come from the Dolphins,
14:02 where Saban had been for a short period.
14:05 - Right.
14:06 - I don't use the H word often.
14:08 They hated him.
14:09 I don't know how else to say it.
14:10 They hated him.
14:12 And obviously, he's come back to college
14:13 and done more than okay.
14:15 Okay, but you bring that back to Harbaugh,
14:17 is what I'm saying.
14:19 When Harbaugh was first at Michigan,
14:20 just the folks that I've talked to here and there,
14:22 he was maybe a little more stern, not as relatable.
14:26 And then the past two, three, four years,
14:28 he's been much looser, much more relatable.
14:31 Players can approach him.
14:32 Everything that you talked about.
14:34 Okay, and to me, players bought in to his toughness,
14:38 his mentality, and Michigan is the toughest program
14:41 in America right now with how they play on the field.
14:42 And that's why they won the national title.
14:45 All right, man, so we say all this.
14:47 We're talking, speaking wonderful things about Harbaugh.
14:50 Now, is he coming back?
14:52 And J.J. McCarthy, for that matter.
14:54 But is Harbaugh coming back?
14:55 Why should he or should he not?
14:57 Same with J.J. McCarthy.
14:58 - Well, it's kind of a twofold answer.
15:02 I mean, that's a tale of a double-sided coin, if you will.
15:05 Does Jimmy come back?
15:07 Right, 'cause I have a gravy spot right now.
15:10 Everybody built him up as the Messiah in khakis.
15:14 And he's finally lived up to that billing, right?
15:18 But as you alluded to, he's had success in the NFL before,
15:24 making it to a Super Bowl.
15:26 If he leaves, I'm good with that.
15:31 And the reason why I'm good with that,
15:32 because that's the one box not left,
15:35 not checked on his coaching resume,
15:40 is winning a Super Bowl.
15:43 Having been there as a player for a long time in the NFL,
15:46 having coached, having had success in the NFL.
15:49 But again, he's been to the mountain,
15:52 just hasn't been to the mountaintop.
15:54 He's been to the mountaintop now as a collegiate coach.
15:58 So does he make that jump?
16:02 I don't know.
16:03 If he does, I understand.
16:04 If he stays, I get it.
16:06 As he said, who has it better than us?
16:10 Nobody.
16:11 Why would you leave the situation right now
16:13 with the iron being so hot?
16:15 But I'm also comfortable if he leaves,
16:21 if because of the fact of the great job
16:24 that Coach Moore has done.
16:26 I feel like the program is in good hands.
16:29 If the captain decided to leave the ship,
16:32 I believe his XO, his second in command,
16:34 has shown he is more than ready to take the helm.
16:41 Coach Moore has showed up in three of the biggest games.
16:45 When the lights were the hottest,
16:47 the pressure was the highest,
16:50 the expectations were the highest.
16:52 And also, the detractors were the highest.
16:56 This is during that time where the slings and arrows
16:59 from the NCAA and Michigan haters
17:03 were being hurled at us at record speeds.
17:09 He kept his focus.
17:11 He, along with Coach Harbaugh,
17:13 because Coach Harbaugh's still in the building,
17:15 kept the boys' focus.
17:17 And that, to me, is one of the biggest pieces
17:20 of the coaching puzzle is
17:22 when you're dealing with adversity,
17:24 either internally or externally,
17:27 as the leader of a program,
17:30 how do you keep the masses of the program
17:33 focused on a common goal?
17:35 And that's what Coach Harbaugh and Coach Moore has done.
17:39 So if Jimmy decides to leave, well-deserved, I salute you.
17:44 Coach Moore, as we have often said,
17:46 which has always been a motto at Michigan, next man up.
17:49 If that is in fact the case,
17:51 and hopefully Coach Moore will get the job,
17:54 but this is another layer.
17:58 If Jimmy leaves,
18:00 how many other programs come after Coach Moore?
18:03 That, to me, is the most intriguing question.
18:06 How many zeros are they gonna throw at Coach
18:09 to try to lure him away?
18:10 - Do you think he would leave?
18:12 It's a great situation here.
18:16 And while you ponder that,
18:18 he's already coached half a season
18:20 as a head coach this year.
18:21 Three games to start, three games to end.
18:24 He's two and O versus top 10 teams,
18:25 one and O versus Ohio State.
18:28 I love the fact that the offensive coordinator at Michigan,
18:31 right now, currently, as it stands,
18:32 is the offensive line coach.
18:33 Everything that I've already talked about
18:35 verifies or justifies that.
18:37 Here's the other thing, okay?
18:39 Because we talked about the players at Michigan
18:41 have bought into what Harbaugh, okay,
18:43 has been trying to get them to buy into.
18:46 Well, if you bring in an outside guy,
18:48 he's gonna do things differently.
18:49 He's gonna change things.
18:50 He's gotta bring in his people.
18:52 And even if he tries to do what Harbaugh's doing,
18:53 Harbaugh's one of one.
18:54 You can't mimic a guy who's one of one.
18:57 Moore already knows that.
18:58 Moore's already had success.
18:59 He's already done it.
19:00 Why change it?
19:01 You've got a guy right there and waiting.
19:03 All right, now that you've got your answer,
19:05 I'm anxious to hear it.
19:07 I think he stays, based off everything
19:11 in what you just said, I don't have to reinvent the wheel.
19:14 I know the kids, I know the program, I know my coaches,
19:16 I know my strength conditioning coach.
19:18 Coach Ben has done a fabulous job in the weight room.
19:20 But the other piece to this is,
19:23 and you know it and I know it, bro, this is business.
19:27 This is your opportunity to create generational wealth.
19:31 Nick Saban is, by all means, if not close to a billionaire.
19:37 Based off of all of the things that he has going for him.
19:40 Coach Moore, if hypothetically, Bama says,
19:45 "Hey coach, we're gonna throw you 20 million a year
19:49 "to come be our head coach.
19:50 "Based off of your resume right now
19:52 "and everything that we've seen you do up close and personal,
19:56 "we think you'll be a great fit here at Bama."
19:59 With all of the accoutrements that Bama has to offer,
20:02 does Coach Moore take that?
20:04 I don't know, that's a tough sell, right?
20:07 You throw me, and again, hypothetical numbers.
20:09 I don't have any inside information
20:11 that this is in fact the thing.
20:12 I'm just giving you a scenario.
20:17 20 million to come to Bama,
20:19 they're paying me 2.5 to stay at Michigan.
20:22 Make it make sense, again, it's business.
20:26 The selfish side of me would say,
20:29 "Yeah, you stay because of all of the emotional entrapments
20:34 "that we have right now.
20:34 "All of the things that you,
20:36 "the blood, sweat, and tears that you put into this,
20:38 "everything that you've gone through to build this up.
20:40 "Why would you leave it right now
20:42 "when you're on the mountaintop?"
20:44 But the business analytical side of me,
20:46 as a family man says, "Bro, you take the money.
20:49 "It's not like you're going to UTEP,
20:51 "and no disrespect to UTEP,
20:53 "but you're still Power 5 program,
20:57 "still gonna have a highly touted program,
21:00 "and I'm getting 20 mil?
21:02 "Who wouldn't?"
21:04 So again, that's tough.
21:05 So to answer your question, yes, he stays.
21:09 'Cause I don't know if any of these outside scenarios
21:11 that I just kind of threw out there are even in the works.
21:16 And I think he stays because now,
21:19 he truly gets to show his prowess as a head coach.
21:23 Again, you did this in the three toughest games
21:27 while pulling double duty, well, actually triple.
21:30 O-line coach, OC, and head coach.
21:33 To my knowledge, it's never been done.
21:35 And the other piece to it too is,
21:37 as a black man, as a black former player
21:40 at the University of Michigan,
21:41 this will be the first time we ever had a black head coach,
21:43 which will be historic.
21:45 Who wouldn't want to be that guy
21:47 to take that position at that point in time?
21:51 So there's a lot of layers to this.
21:53 This is gonna be a really interesting read,
21:55 especially over the next few weeks
21:57 to see how things play out.
21:58 So I'm really excited.
22:01 I'm more excited than I am nervous
22:03 because either way it goes,
22:04 I still think we're sitting in a good space.
22:07 - So here's my thoughts on Harbaugh.
22:09 It's everything you already said, and Coach Moore.
22:11 I don't have anything to add to Coach Moore.
22:13 But when it comes to Harbaugh,
22:16 he's built a monster at Michigan.
22:18 Maybe he wants to get to the mountaintop in the NFL.
22:20 What if that's 50/50?
22:22 I can't help, and I want the best people in football
22:26 to stay in college football.
22:27 College football is better when Michigan is better.
22:29 I miss Miami of Florida as much as I hated them growing up.
22:32 I miss them being good.
22:33 I'm kinda glad Texas is back, sort of,
22:36 as a guy who grew up not rooting for them.
22:38 You know, Notre Dame, Nebraska,
22:40 for more than just the fact that I'm an alumni,
22:42 college football is better when those teams are better.
22:44 So I selfishly want Harbaugh to stay.
22:46 As a Nebraska guy, I also want him to get the hell out.
22:49 Gives us a better chance to win.
22:50 So there's two sides to that.
22:52 But here's, I can't help but wonder,
22:54 if I'm Jim Harbaugh, okay, is this in the back of my mind?
22:57 'Cause it has to be.
22:58 Does he feel like there's a little bit of a witch hunt
23:00 when it comes to the investigations?
23:02 They've asked to see his phone, computer, texts, emails.
23:06 To my knowledge, they've found nothing.
23:08 Okay, we're talking about Cheeseburger Gate,
23:11 you know, the analysts on the field,
23:12 the sign stealing and everything.
23:14 And I'm not saying everyone's a saint, okay?
23:16 What I'm saying is, all right,
23:19 everyone right now in college football,
23:21 you're not supposed to be paying players
23:23 to come play for you, okay?
23:25 It's supposed to be they're getting paid
23:26 for name, image, and likeness.
23:27 But everyone's paying players to come
23:29 under the gauze of NIL.
23:31 That's what's really going on and everyone knows it.
23:33 So maybe Harbaugh feels like there's a bit of a witch hunt.
23:37 Okay, and I can't help but wonder if that's a tiebreaker.
23:39 And I'll just give my quick thoughts on JJ McCarthy.
23:42 And then Lindsey, who's phenomenal
23:44 with helping behind the show.
23:45 This is when we should end the show.
23:47 I'm gonna let her edit whatever she wants
23:48 'cause I got one more question for you.
23:50 - Yeah, yeah, we gotta get in this.
23:51 - When it comes to JJ McCarthy,
23:54 I don't think he's had to show much
23:56 because of the offense, because of the defense,
23:59 because of what is around him.
24:01 If I'm an NFL scout, how do I evaluate this guy?
24:03 I see his talent, I know he's a five star.
24:05 I see he can run, I see his height, I see everything.
24:08 But how do I evaluate this guy?
24:10 In the biggest game of the year,
24:11 his team won by three touchdowns
24:13 and he's a good quarterback to be clear,
24:15 but he barely completed over 50% of his passes
24:18 and had only 140 yards passing with no TDs.
24:21 If I'm JJ McCarthy, I come back
24:23 just so I can raise my draft stock.
24:25 Now here's my question for you, all right?
24:29 How badly does 1997 Nebraska beat 97 Michigan?
24:34 You had to know that was coming.
24:37 You had to know that was coming.
24:39 - How badly does 1997 Nebraska beat 1997 Michigan?
24:44 - You like how I worded that?
24:45 You like how I worded that?
24:47 - I'm here for it now.
24:49 I will say this, out of respect for you and your show,
24:53 'cause I'm a classy guy, I would just say
24:56 that it would be a great game to watch.
24:59 It was a highly, two teams that were highly touted
25:04 that went out there and they both did
25:06 what they were supposed to do.
25:08 I was gone, I kind of feel like I was a part of it.
25:11 I graduated in '96, I was with the Arizona Cardinals
25:14 during that timeframe, but having played
25:16 with all of those guys, I definitely would put that team up
25:20 against anyone at this juncture.
25:23 But at the same point in time too, as a football guy,
25:25 I'll give respect where respect is due.
25:27 You guys had some ballers, bro.
25:29 - Yeah, you guys did too.
25:31 - So like I said, I'll just keep it respectful
25:33 and say that it definitely would have been
25:35 a beautiful thing to watch.
25:36 Real quick though, a couple of things.
25:38 I 100% agree with you about JJ.
25:41 JJ's mechanics have gotten better as he has played,
25:46 but to your point, because of the fact
25:47 that we are such a run-heavy program,
25:50 as a quarterback, he didn't really get to show his wares.
25:54 You look at a Penix in that Texas game,
25:56 you're throwing 70-yard bombs
25:58 and you're dropping it in the bucket.
26:00 You come and play us, you can't hit the broad side of a bar.
26:04 So there's obviously gonna be some difficulties
26:07 as far as the evaluation size goes
26:09 for the NFL aspect of things.
26:12 The other piece about Coach Harbaugh too
26:14 is that I also wanna look at it from the standpoint
26:18 as the president of the university
26:20 or your athletic director in Warren Manuel.
26:23 Jimmy, you're kind of a lightning rod,
26:25 we love you to death,
26:26 but you're talking this whole money thing, right?
26:28 And you alluded to that.
26:29 Hey, the players should be getting some profit sharing,
26:33 all of that.
26:34 100% agree with it.
26:35 I remember when Sega Genesis first came out
26:37 with NCAA college football or whatever,
26:40 I was on the game, it was like 75 at left tackle.
26:44 I had Damon Denson, all of the guys,
26:47 the races were right, the numbers were right.
26:49 Only thing you didn't have were the names on the back.
26:52 We never saw a dime of that.
26:53 But again, when you start messing with the church's money,
26:58 people in the pulpit start getting upset.
27:02 And so with that being said, if Jimmy was to leave,
27:06 is that better for the university as a whole?
27:10 Because it deflects some of that negative attention.
27:15 Okay, he's gone now, next guy up, blah, blah, blah,
27:19 we move forward.
27:21 Or does the university's like, hey, this is our guy.
27:24 He's not speaking out of church.
27:26 He's speaking in the benefit for the players.
27:31 Why would we not wanna support this individual right now?
27:35 He's winning, our kids are doing it the right way.
27:37 As all large programs, you're gonna stub your toe
27:42 with certain individuals from time and time again,
27:44 just off of behavioral sort of stuff with young men.
27:47 But overall, we're doing it the right way.
27:49 Kids are graduating, kids are staying out of trouble,
27:51 kids are winning game.
27:52 What more can you ask out of your head coach?
27:54 So with that being said, as I said before,
27:57 there's layers to this book that's being written
28:00 as we read, and I'm really excited to see how it ends.
28:04 - Yeah, man, I appreciate you joining me.
28:07 So when I originally wrote down,
28:09 and you make a lot of phenomenal points, by the way,
28:11 I love the pulpit.
28:12 I love that, that's a great one.
28:14 I might have to steal that in the future.
28:15 - Hey, all yours, brother.
28:16 - I appreciate it.
28:17 When I originally wrote down the Nebraska question,
28:19 I had who would win?
28:21 I was like, no, no, no, no,
28:21 we gotta have some fun with this.
28:22 I gotta reword how I'm gonna ask that question.
28:25 - I'm here for it.
28:26 - Dude, it's not lost on me.
28:27 Obviously Charles Woodson,
28:29 only major priority defensive player
28:31 that's won the Heisman Trophy, beat out Peyton Manning.
28:33 And you guys had the toughest strength to schedule
28:35 that year, none of that stuff's lost on me.
28:38 The only thing that I'm mad about is we didn't get the game
28:41 'cause it probably would have been within a score.
28:43 So, all right, man, I appreciate you taking the time
28:45 for joining me.
28:47 And until next time. - Thank you for having me.
28:48 - Absolutely, until next time, ladies and gentlemen,
28:51 be safe, we'll see you soon.
28:53 - Be well, brother, go blue.
28:54 [BLANK_AUDIO]
