00:02 - Hey Canada, welcome to Good Bites Takeout.
00:09 I'm Alex and this is the show where I make the most
00:11 of the fact that I can't go out to eat,
00:12 so instead I take it to go.
00:14 I'm on St. Catherine Street West,
00:15 walking to what's often referred to as few Chinatown.
00:18 Sammy's Soup and Dumplings has a loaded dumpling menu,
00:21 but the thing that has people driving in
00:24 and lining up is their xiao long bao, soup dumplings.
00:27 Xiao long bao is a very famous local food in Shanghai area.
00:32 Now even all over China, and it has a long history.
00:36 Since a hundred years ago in China,
00:38 my family owns the same kind of restaurant in China.
00:41 It's very popular, people love it very much.
00:44 I'm thinking why not I bring this kind of food to Montreal?
00:48 Now it's the dumpling, it's a very popular food in Canada.
00:51 Today I present three flavors.
00:53 So the first, juicy pork.
00:55 You know it's a very traditional flavor,
00:58 and if you don't know what you order,
01:00 you can take the juicy pork, it's a good choice.
01:03 The second is lamb coriander.
01:06 You know it's taste is unique and sufficient flavor.
01:09 Mix the lamb and the fresh coriander together.
01:13 The last one is pan fried curry and beef.
01:16 This one we created by ourselves,
01:18 and it's popular and if you are a fan of curry,
01:24 you will love it for sure.
01:26 (upbeat music)
01:28 - All right, I'm gonna kick things off here
01:33 with the original, the sweet pork.
01:35 And the reason is this is probably the one
01:37 that a lot of people who are trying this out
01:39 for the first time are gonna go with.
01:41 I'm gonna tell you right now,
01:42 I've today found out that I've been eating these dumplings
01:44 completely wrong for years.
01:46 What you're supposed to do is you're supposed to
01:49 pick up the dumpling with your chopsticks,
01:52 place it in the spoon, that's step one.
01:55 Take a bite out of this,
01:56 just enough to let the juices pour out.
01:59 You drink it in, you get all that flavor,
02:02 and you place it back down.
02:03 And now the trick is, see that opening?
02:06 You dunk it in and you scoop up some sauce.
02:10 And that's what you eat.
02:12 Listen, it might be the wrong way to do it,
02:19 but I enjoy the Neanderthal way of eating it.
02:22 Pop it in my mouth, it tastes good.
02:24 All right, moving on to dumpling number two.
02:26 I've got lamb and coriander.
02:27 Now, what I'm gonna do here though
02:28 is I'm gonna mix the two methods,
02:30 the right way and the wrong way,
02:31 and I'm gonna try to come up with something new.
02:33 Maybe you've done this before, maybe I'm a genius.
02:35 I'm gonna bite the top off, leave the soup inside,
02:40 and I'm just gonna dunk this over
02:42 and make a little volcano of flavor.
02:44 Come on.
02:51 Oh my God, how have I never done this before?
02:53 As much as I love coriander and I love lamb,
02:55 and this is very good lamb.
02:56 The way it blends together with the juices
02:57 and the flavor of the coriander is awesome.
03:00 The sweet pork that they had in that original one
03:03 is just out of this world.
03:04 And I'm appreciating that a little bit more
03:06 having tasted this.
03:07 Still good.
03:08 All right, to close things off now,
03:09 the third dish is gonna be pan-fried beef and curry dumplings
03:13 a little bit different from the soup ones.
03:14 There is no liquid inside.
03:16 And I don't know about you,
03:17 but I've never had curry inside of a dumpling before.
03:20 I'm willing to give it a shot.
03:22 I'm not really like blown away by the beef and curry.
03:27 It's doing something.
03:28 Oh, you know what?
03:29 There's actually a lingering flavor, hold on.
03:31 It's growing on me.
03:33 You know what it is?
03:34 I'm so used to the juices from the soup dumplings
03:37 blowing up in my mouth and just being a quick hit right away.
03:41 This is a slow burn.
03:42 You have one, it sits on your tongue.
03:44 You have a second one, the flavors start expanding.
03:46 And the one thing that's standing out the most to me
03:48 is that the curry is super subtle.
03:51 If you're not crazy about curry,
03:52 this might actually be good for you to try
03:55 just because it's just the tinge of it.
03:57 You're just getting a tiny little taste of it.
03:59 But at the same time, if you're absolutely crazy about curry,
04:01 you're not gonna get a whole lot of it here.
04:02 And that is it for this episode of "Good Bites Takeout."
04:04 Thank you for making it to the very end.
04:06 And listen, if you wanna get a taste
04:07 of Sami soup and dumpling,
04:08 you can find them right now on DoorDash,
04:10 SkipTheDishes, and UberEats.
04:12 And you can go right into the restaurant
04:14 and get it right from there.
04:15 But there might be a line.
04:16 To be honest with you, it'll be worth the wait.
04:18 Now listen, if you're still hungry, don't worry about it.
04:20 I'll be back next week with a brand new place
04:22 that you can order some takeout from.
04:24 I'll see you then.
04:25 Oh yeah, come to papa.
