Some might argue that poutine, smoked meat or bagels are Montreal’s true claim to fame but it seems we’ve all forgotten about one dish that hits every. single. time. Chicken. Rotisserie chicken is just as much a staple across the 514 — with countless family-run spots and chains galore that are found all throughout Quebec. So, when it came down to narrowing down the best of the best, only two restaurants came to mind for MTL Blog’s Mike Chaar: St-Hubert BBQ and Ma Poule Mouillée. Find out which one came out on top!

00:00 I like it creamy, I don't prefer it traditional.
00:03 Do you?
00:04 The spice blend that they use,
00:05 it's just an explosion in your mouth.
00:09 You can't go wrong with french fries.
00:12 Hey Montreal, Mike Sharpe from MTL Blog
00:14 coming at you with another food battle video.
00:17 This time around, rotisserie chicken.
00:20 I'm heading on over to Mapoui Mouillé right now,
00:22 which is regarded as one of the best spots
00:24 here in the city for rotisserie chicken.
00:26 Their menu is easily topped here,
00:28 but I'm pitting it against none other
00:30 than Quebec's very own chain restaurant,
00:32 Saint-Hubert Barbecue.
00:34 ♪ What, what, what, what, what, Saint-Hubert Barbecue ♪
00:36 Chances are if you grew up in Quebec,
00:38 you grew up eating Saint-Hubert,
00:40 then you can never go wrong.
00:41 All right, so how is this gonna work?
00:43 Well, I'll be ordering the same dish from each restaurant,
00:45 chicken, french fries, and salad,
00:47 and testing out the cost, presentation,
00:50 and flavor of both to see which one comes out on top.
00:53 Let's go find out.
00:54 (upbeat music)
00:57 (upbeat music)
01:00 - Hello, how are you?
01:04 Very good, thank you.
01:05 Can I grab one of the louisieurs, please?
01:07 Yes.
01:09 Non-spicy, please.
01:10 That's it.
01:12 (upbeat music)
01:14 Okay, so I ordered the louisieurs,
01:22 and that comes with half a chicken,
01:24 a serving of french fries, and salad.
01:26 It looks so good.
01:27 Such a huge portion, 18 bucks after tax.
01:31 Can't go wrong.
01:31 I'm also sat right beside where they cook the chickens,
01:35 and it's so hot.
01:36 But I'm pushing through, and I'm doing it,
01:38 and we're gonna have the chicken first,
01:40 so let's give it a taste.
01:41 (upbeat music)
01:44 The chicken is so good.
01:53 I've been to my four-mouille so many times before,
01:55 but when you come back, it's as if you're eating it
01:58 for the first time again.
01:59 The flavor, the succulent chicken, can't go wrong.
02:04 I'm gonna give the french fries a try next.
02:05 I already know I'm gonna like them,
02:07 'cause it's my favorite cut of fries,
02:10 and they're one of my favorites to begin with.
02:12 You can't go wrong with french fries.
02:15 You can't go wrong with french fries.
02:19 - Honestly, she speaks facts.
02:21 - I'm gonna give the salad a try.
02:22 Salad's always sort of like a compliment to the meal,
02:25 and I never really hold it to that high of a regard.
02:28 But this salad legit looks pretty good.
02:29 There's tomatoes, there's red onions,
02:32 arugula, and a good garden sort of mix.
02:34 And the dressing looks really good too.
02:38 It is a bomb salad.
02:44 My four-mouille, every time, every time.
02:49 All right, so I just got done with my four-mouille.
02:51 So delicious, can't go wrong.
02:53 But I got a rubric to follow.
02:55 I gotta give it a score.
02:57 So when it comes to cost, 18 bucks, huge portion.
03:00 I still got some for dinner.
03:02 So five on five, can't go wrong there.
03:04 When it comes to the flavor,
03:05 every single bite was a burst of flavor.
03:08 I still don't know what they use, what spice blend,
03:10 but it's so good.
03:11 There's not one thing that I could think of
03:12 that I did not enjoy about that meal.
03:14 Also a five on five.
03:16 And as for presentation, a little bit messy,
03:18 so a three on five for that.
03:19 But my four-mouille is one of those spots
03:21 where it's like the food and its taste sort of speaks
03:23 for itself.
03:24 I'm a little worried for Saint-Hubert,
03:26 to be perfectly honest.
03:27 But we still have to give everyone a fair chance.
03:30 I'll be heading to Saint-Hubert tomorrow to try it out
03:32 and see how it compares to my four-mouille's chicken.
03:36 All right, I am back.

03:40 I am heading on over to Saint-Hubert Barbecue
03:43 to try out their chicken dish,

03:49 Again, like I said yesterday,
03:50 I'm a little bit worried for Saint-Hubert
03:52 because yesterday's meal was just fricking so good.
03:56 But we're giving it a chance.
03:57 We're gonna try out chicken fries,
03:58 their coleslaw to see how it measures up.
04:00 Side note, it is very, very cold today.
04:04 So brownie points for your mans over here

05:36 Coleslaw next.
05:37 (upbeat music)
05:40 (upbeat music)
05:42 (upbeat music)
05:45 (upbeat music)
05:46 So the coleslaw is bomb.
05:48 I prefer coleslaw than something like a mixed garden salad
05:52 with a meal like this,
05:53 only because the crunch of the cabbage in the coleslaw
05:56 just is sort of the texture I'm sort of looking for.
05:59 So yeah, I have a lot to think about.
06:02 I really do.
06:03 Yeah, I'm gonna finish this up
06:05 and then we're gonna do our final verdict.
06:08 All right, so I've had time to think.
06:10 If we take into consideration the criteria,
06:12 cost, flavor, and presentation,
06:14 I would say when it comes to cost for Saint-Hubert,
06:16 not bad at all, but still more expensive than Mapoulin-Mouillé.
06:19 So I'm giving them a score on five.
06:22 When it comes to flavor, yo, it was pretty bomb.
06:26 Especially with the barbecue sauce,
06:27 the chicken was very succulent, very juicy, lots of flavor.
06:30 So I'm giving that a solid score on five.
06:33 And then when it comes to presentation,
06:34 very neat, very organized.
06:36 I love when everything is sort of separate.
06:38 So definitely a solid score on five on that as well.
06:42 Okay, it's the very next day.
06:43 I have had time to thaw out from the cold.
06:46 I've had time to eat my Mapoulin-Mouillé leftovers.
06:49 Y'all, it's verdict time.
06:52 So the winner of this food battle is Mapoulin-Mouillé
06:56 with a total score of 13 out of 15.
06:59 Whereas Saint-Hubert came in with a 12 out of 15.
07:02 So Mapoulin-Mouillé only won by the skin of its teeth
07:05 or the chicken skin of its teeth.
07:08 But honestly, it all came down to the chicken's flavor.
07:10 Mapoulin-Mouillé, the Portuguese chicken,
07:12 the spice blend that they use,
07:14 it's just an explosion in your mouth every time you have it.
07:18 And it could stand alone.
07:20 You don't really need a side.
07:21 You don't need anything to accompany the meal.
07:23 The Mapoulin-Mouillé chicken is just fire on its own.
07:27 Whereas Saint-Hubert, the chicken is good.
07:29 Great even, don't get me wrong.
07:30 But you need a little barbecue sauce sometimes.
07:33 You need a little ketchup in order to make it perfect.
07:36 So it really comes down to whatever secret Mapoulin-Mouillé
07:38 has on that chicken, and it did them justice.
07:41 But there is only one Mapoulin-Mouillé here in Montreal.
07:45 Yes, only one located here in the Plateau.
07:48 So if you can't get your hands on Mapoulin-Mouillé,
07:49 Saint-Hubert is obviously your next best bet
07:52 for rotisserie chicken.
07:53 You honestly can't go wrong.
07:54 Thank you all so much for watching this food battle.
07:56 Definitely check us out on our next one.
07:59 And I hope you have the best day ever.
