00:00 Good evening and welcome to Kent on Climate live here on KMTV. I'm Gabriel Morris and
00:19 in this show we discuss all things related to environmental issues from right across
00:23 the county such as how is climate change impacting Kent, what are communities doing to tackle
00:28 it and how you can help at home. Each week we'll be tackling new issues and talking to
00:33 expert guests and in tonight's show we're talking about the Climate Awards in Canterbury,
00:38 celebrating Kent's sustainable heroes to coincide with COP28, why we could be at risk for mosquitoes
00:46 and malaria and where your Christmas trees come from in Kent. But first tonight, schools,
00:52 universities and farms were just some of the organisations recognised over the weekend
00:56 at the annual Canterbury Climate Awards. The event was scheduled to coincide with the COP28
01:02 summit in Dubai which is entering its last day as world leaders try to get an agreement
01:07 on fossil fuels over the line. Attendees say they've been disheartened by international
01:12 action but hope to show that work here in the county can make a difference. Oliver Leader
01:18 de Sacks went along to the event to find out more. While the streets of Canterbury are
01:22 filled with Christmas stools, here at St Peter's Methodist Church in Canterbury there's
01:27 a very different sort of festival taking place. For the second year running, community leaders
01:32 and organisations combating climate change are coming together to be recognised for their
01:37 work. Organisers hope the awards will inspire more people in Kent to become more climate
01:42 conscious, even as world leaders debate the future of fossil fuels on the other side of
01:47 the world. So much is coming down at the local level, it's not just something that happens
01:50 in Dubai or the United Nations in New York or even in Whitehall, it's something that
01:56 can be done in Canterbury, in Medway, in Kent and some really concrete actions. I guess
02:02 that's what the festival is trying to demonstrate, some of the really positives that can be done,
02:07 some of the really local actions whether it's by schools or businesses. One key stakeholder
02:12 in the Canterbury Climate Action Partnership is Canterbury City Council. They say that
02:17 bringing climate innovators under one roof benefits everyone. Climate action comes from
02:22 behaviour change and so these kind of events really engage with the community and they
02:27 can learn more about stuff, ask questions and if we want to really combat climate change
02:34 everyone's got to be on board. Alongside that there's an element of a lot of organisations
02:39 here today have contacts that each other can utilise so from a networking perspective it's
02:45 really beneficial. We can all lift each other up or put each other in touch with others
02:52 who can help. As you can see behind me guests and nominees are piling in for the Climate
02:57 Action Awards and the anticipation is palpable. It starts off by saying COP28 is important
03:05 indeed, tell the world to sow the seed, save humanity. The awards themselves started with
03:13 a poem written by Dr Carl Wright's wife who was too unwell to attend. But these powerful
03:19 words were quickly drowned out by applause for the day's winners which included the University
03:25 of Kent Sustainability Working Group and a refillery in the city encouraging people to
03:29 stop using single use plastics. But the biggest cheer was for the overall winners, the Barnum
03:34 Downs Farmer Group with over 30 farms focusing on restoring wildlife and farmland habitats.
03:40 Despite recognising those making a difference on their doorstep, the patrons of the awards
03:45 still have reservations about the global state of climate action. I want world leaders not
03:51 to ask whether, you know, is the choice, if there is a choice between a political decision
04:00 and the right decision, I want our world leaders always to make the right decision. Even as
04:06 the celebrations were underway the partnership said they are already planning for the awards
04:10 to come back next year with even more people. Olive Leeds, The Saks reporting for KMTV.
04:26 Talking more about the importance of thinking local and for COP28 is at the Canterbury Climate
04:32 Action Partnership. A representative at the summit in Dubai is Dr Balaad Chandra Harman.
04:39 Thank you so much for coming in. So talk me through your time at the climate summit. What
04:44 were some of your highlights? When did you even get back from Dubai?
04:47 I got back two days ago, but I was there for two crucial days in terms of the programme
04:55 and so on. One of the things I planned it and we planned it in such a way that, you
05:00 know, we are able to cover thematic areas that are there and then there are side events
05:07 and then there are other activities which are in general for the whole group so to speak
05:16 at COP28. So it's a very exciting time in the sense that, you know, there are so many
05:24 things happening and what you need to find out is how you are able to maximise the time
05:33 especially in relation to the sort of theme that you are trying to represent as a delegate
05:39 of a particular delegation.
05:40 Well we just saw a couple of pictures on the screen. I saw you speaking there. You are
05:45 from the Canterbury Climate Action Partnership. What was your involvement there? What were
05:48 you speaking about at the COP?
05:52 Right, let me sort of unpack it in such a way that, you know, first one, one area where
05:58 I was directly involved was I was a member of a panel on education and justice and this
06:06 was organised by the Rotary International and there I was highlighting my idea or the
06:14 idea of the partnership that in order to have a meaningful impact it is important that,
06:22 you know, we work as a partnership across different groups, different interests as
06:30 well as different age groups so to speak. So in that sense, you know, I was talking
06:34 about one of the things which I am directly involved in, that is I am a member of the
06:44 United Nations Association which is one of the partners of the partnership and in this
06:49 partnership what we have been doing is I am leading on a link between Canterbury and
06:56 Entebbe municipality in Uganda and what we did was to actually to focus on climate action.
07:05 One underlying theme or the idea is that in order to achieve climate action as well as
07:11 success with that we need to focus on empathy. It is only by creating an empathetic understanding
07:17 of other people involved that we will be able to get motivated. So we organised an essay
07:24 competition. It was, I would call it an essay but also we gave options to school children
07:32 in Entebbe who could either draw a sketch or do a video on their mobile and there was
07:39 a team of experts and teachers who went through that and gave prizes and the most interesting
07:46 part of it was that we were repeating that in Canterbury but the idea is that the school
07:52 children in Entebbe wrote on the theme of 'my school friend in Canterbury is affected
07:59 by climate change, what can I do?'
08:02 What sort of impacts are we seeing of climate change here in Kent in the South East and
08:05 in Canterbury?
08:08 We do have an impact in terms of pollution levels, in terms of erosion, sea erosion,
08:16 in terms of floods we had not too far back in history. So we have a whole range of areas
08:25 in which climate has been affecting in terms of health, in terms of other things that we
08:33 value so much, in terms of clean air and so on. So in terms of even biodiversity, so we
08:41 are taking action to reverse these things. Like for example we have the wildlife biodiversity
08:48 initiative with bison around.
08:50 Yeah, exactly, we've covered those lots of times in the programme. So we'll have to,
08:54 I haven't been down there myself yet, I still need to get down there. But let's go back
08:58 to COP. This morning when we woke up, we heard about the agreement to transition away from
09:05 fossil fuels this decade. What do you make of that agreement?
09:08 I think it is probably the most practical outcome because in all COPs, I was there at
09:16 the previous COP in Sharm el Sheikh. In most COPs there is a, what one might call it, there's
09:24 an interaction or in some ways you can even put it as conflict of interest, tension between
09:30 different constituencies. For example, there are people who would argue, there were quite
09:38 a lot of delegates who were representing energy firms and there were also people who wanted
09:48 reparations and so on. So we find that there is a sort of confluence of different interests
09:55 there and in that given all that, what one could expect from a COP, for a COP is statement
10:04 of intent and that in turn puts pressure, setting a benchmark for different people,
10:13 for voluntary groups, for governments, for businesses, for finance companies so that
10:21 they have a particular direction in which there is consensus. And in that sense, the
10:27 idea of transition from fossil fuel is a very good outcome but it's also devilish in the
10:36 detail and in implementation.
10:37 Do you think the world leaders went far enough this week?
10:41 As far as, if you have such a diverse group of leaders representing their own constituencies
10:48 and their own challenges in terms of how far can they go, how fast can they go, how far
10:54 can they be helped by others. So in that sense, for a country like the Nigerian delegation
11:01 was pointing it out that yes, we have petrol and if we want to stop we need to transition,
11:07 we need technology and without those things if we stop then it would be a catastrophe.
11:13 So I think if you understand the points, that's where I think that COP is quite helpful. It
11:18 brings together people and it also enables people to, or countries, leaders to highlight
11:24 their own preferences, pressures, etc. So given all that, I think it's a good step
11:31 in the right direction. But the main thing to see before the next COP is to what extent
11:38 things have materialised on the ground.
11:40 Well thank you so much for coming in. We've run out of time I'm afraid. But definitely
11:45 come back in and talk more about it in the future. Well we're going to take a quick break
11:48 now as I just said, but coming up we'll have our health expert in to talk about infections.
11:53 Are they increasing with climate change? We'll be back after this break.
