00:00 They were the last days of the decade before Sheffield was transformed by the so-called
00:06 swinging 60s.
00:09 That was 1959.
00:11 It was an era before so many social changes transformed the city, and a time when young
00:17 men still had to spend time in the military doing their national service.
00:22 And the very fabric of the city was changing, with many of Sheffield's older buildings
00:26 lost, while others, such as Park Hill's flats, sprang up, very different to the homes in
00:33 the city which had been built in previous generations.
00:37 Lots was happening in Sheffield, in an era when the stars photographers covered the goings-on
00:42 in the city using black and white photography.
00:45 But of course, the world was not in black and white, it was very much in colour.
00:50 Now, decades later, the technology exists to transform some of those photos into colour.
00:57 And that is what we have done, using computers to bring new colour to those pictures.
01:03 Most are taken from the stars archives, with a few courtesy of Sheffield Council's picture
01:07 archive.
01:11 Our gallery gives you the chance to see the transformed streets.
01:15 And it also gives you the chance to look inside the buildings of that time, many of which
01:19 have changed as technology has affected the way we live our lives and do business.
01:25 Take a look at that world, in colour again for the first time in more than half a century.
