00:00 It's September 1, 1994, and you come back and you're not offered the priesthood, so
00:11 you take the position as president of the Cardinals.
00:14 And five Central Division titles, the 2006 opening of Bush Stadium, the new one.
00:21 Man, how do you time it where you open a stadium at the same time the team wins its 10th World
00:26 Series the same year?
00:28 What an amazing position you put yourself in.
00:31 That was unbelievable.
00:34 I think it has happened one of the time.
00:36 I think when Yankee Stadium opened, the Yankees won a championship that year, but it was a
00:42 real special year.
00:45 A lot of things went well for the team that year.
00:49 We made a late run to get into the playoffs and then beat the Mets in a great NLCS, and
01:00 the Tigers had won the American League pennant, but they won really early on, so they were
01:05 sitting on their hands for four or five days.
01:09 They went into the World Series really cold, and we won in five games.
01:13 It's still the most significant moment I've had in sports is being there with my family,
01:21 with my kids, and sacrificed so much to support us in these types of careers.
01:26 And we were all able to celebrate as a family a world championship that sort of came out
01:31 of nowhere.
01:32 I understand that you and Tim McCarver and Jack Buck all got together and decided who
01:38 would run for king, and you all decided to continue your ongoing careers.
01:45 Did you buy a meal in St. Louis through the remainder of your tenure?
01:49 I get treated really well in St. Louis, but it's like anything else.
01:54 Whenever you work on a project that involves public funding, you're also going to have
01:59 your share of detractors.
02:00 I have nothing to complain about.
02:03 In fact, I was just in St. Louis last weekend for a Cardinal game, and I've been gone almost
02:09 14 years.
02:11 It seemed like it was just yesterday I was there.
02:14 Standing O for Mark Lamping?
02:15 No, no, no.
02:17 But I've got visits from a lot of people, which was very touching.
