00:00 Yes and no, some women have but still a very small percentage of the Indian women diaspora.
00:25 So still a long way to go, I think don't know whether 70 years but it will take another
00:31 25-30 years for you know not 50% but at least 40-45% of the women to get to the mark where
00:38 they are completely independent.
00:40 Well the short answer to your question is no but I think there is more to that, there
00:46 is a longer answer of course because even while women may not have achieved full financial
00:50 independence they are far better off than what they used to be 70 years ago, 60 years
00:55 ago, 50 years ago and even 10 years ago.
00:57 I won't say no, you can say that in this regard financial freedom for Indian women
01:08 is a work in progress in fact in India.
01:15 Obviously not 100% girls are getting the right education that they deserve, then those who
01:22 are getting educated not all of them have the independence to decide that they want
01:28 to work and earn on their own and then so at every level of the funnel people are dropping
01:34 off.
01:35 I think some of the reasons why women drop out of the workforce and don't attain financial
01:39 independence is because they don't get the support of their families.
01:43 Everything and money management is concerned, there we still lack and this may be due to
01:52 the lack of information which women get, they are not very well informed about how to manage
01:58 their money or how to save their money or may be due to lack of confidence.
02:11 Women also have a lot of I would say life changing moments that happen in their life.
02:18 However my belief is that they should have the choice to make at every stage and that
02:23 is one of the challenges with our country India which is that women don't get to make
02:29 that choice, somebody else is getting to decide.
02:32 It's not possible to attain financial independence without the support of all the people in the
02:37 ecosystem and I am extremely sort of grateful and I recognize that as I stand here today.
02:44 When even if women is earning handsome amount but when it comes to managing that amount
02:53 then she still needs help of her husband.
02:56 So in that area I can say that lot of work has to be done.
03:04 I went through the education process, I built my career on my own terms, I am earning this
03:09 much and now do I have the independence to decide how to spend it.
03:13 Whether to invest the money in a fixed deposit or gold or to buy a house or a two wheeler
03:21 or to go on a vacation or buy a nice dress or a saree.
03:25 Whether that level of budgetary allocation decision making women have, I would say that
03:32 roughly 30% or less women in India work.
03:39 So 50% of India has women, less than 30% work and I would say 30% of those have the decision
03:48 making power.
03:49 They should show more interest in learning these things regarding financial things.
03:56 When a woman earns money, the money carries a lot of compassion and nurturance with it
04:03 and putting money in the hands of women actually makes for a better society.
04:12 Today as we sort of look back on our 70+ years of independence and the freedom that we all
04:21 enjoy, I think it's a good opportunity for all working women and financially independent
04:26 women like us to reflect on what is our role in society and how are we helping other women
04:32 attain financial independence.
04:34 It is good to be financially independent but then there should be balance in life.
04:42 Independence financially, independence is very necessary.
04:45 It has become a necessity, it is no more a luxury but they have to mark a balance in
04:52 life because family and marriage and career, they should go together.
