Learn How To Make Mustard Flavored Raw Banana Curry With Chef Lakshmi On Variety Vantalu.
South Indians especially Andhrites will be quite aware of this curry. This is a semi-gravy curry which goes well with rice or roti. The mustard sauce dominates the taste giving it a unique flavor. Anybody who likes Aavakaya ( mango pickle ) is sure to like Aava Arati curry.
Mustard seeds are considered as health benefiting spice. They are rich in phytonutrients, minerals, vitamins, and anti-oxidants. They are also rich in Omega-3 fatty acids. The mustard oil is considered very good for hair growth and strengthening.

Ingredients:
3 Raw bananas, peeled and cut into pieces
1 tsp Mustard seeds
1 tsp Tamarind paste
1/2 tsp chopped ginger
2 chopped green chilies
Few curry leaves
Salt To Taste
1/4 tsp turmeric
1 tbsp oil


For Tempering -

2 Red chilies
1 tsp Chana dal (split bengal gram)
1/2 tsp Mustard seeds
1 tsp Urad dal (split black gram)
1 tsp Cumin seeds
1/4 tsp Asafoetida (Hing)

Preparation:

1. Coarsely grind (preferably use mortar and pestle) 1 tsp of mustard seeds in few (1 or 2) tablespoons of water.
2. Peel the bananas and cut into medium pieces.
3.Cook the chopped raw banana pieces in the cooker up to 3 whistles.
4. Heat oil in a pan and add chana dal, mustard seeds, urad dal cumin seeds and slit red chilies. Once they start to sizzle, drop curry leaves, turmeric, salt, sugar and ginger, green chilies. Saute for a minute.
5. Add boiled banana pieces and then add tamarind paste. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes on low heat.
6. Lastly, add Mustard seed paste and gently toss to evenly coat the mustard masala over the plantain pieces. Serve hot with rice.
