00:01:12All cities have their crime problems.
00:01:15The bigger the city, the greater the problem.
00:01:18Like the tropical jungle which is ever-threatening to encroach on civilization,
00:01:23the inroads of juvenile delinquency are so great and so rapid
00:01:27that it is not enough to check it.
00:01:29It must be conquered.
00:01:31The pace of life in the big city forms an ideal breeding ground
00:01:35for the start of anything that might violate the law.
00:01:38Here is a typical example.
00:01:40These young girls, rounded up by the police the night before,
00:01:44are from tough neighborhoods,
00:01:46born on the wrong side of the street and raised along its sidewalks.
00:01:50These girls learn fast.
00:01:52They know how to fight with their knees, their elbows, their teeth,
00:01:55how to hold a blackjack, how to spot a cop, how to roll a marijuana,
00:01:59and even how to lure a man into a dark hallway.
00:02:03They can't hold down a job to make money,
00:02:06so with a gun in one hand, they go out to make it.
00:02:10They are girl delinquents of a new type.
00:02:13Their names may be different,
00:02:15but they are under arrest for the same thing, armed robbery.
00:02:21Here for the first time is a dramatic picture
00:02:24of the extended nature of this new teenage problem.
00:02:28This is a story of delinquency with a new twist,
00:02:33the story of Gun Girls.
00:02:51Gun Girls
00:03:17Looks like you've been mugged.
00:03:19I have an invitation to make out a report.
00:03:21No, no, officer. Nothing happened.
00:03:24Guess I had one drink too many.
00:03:31I'm telling you the same thing I just told your friends,
00:03:33Dora Jones and Joy Jenkins and their folks.
00:03:37This is the last time I will release you in the custody of your parents.
00:03:41One offense leads to another,
00:03:43and in no time you become involved in a major crime.
00:03:46Continuous disrespect for law and order is a shortcut to a prison term.
00:03:52Girl delinquents are made by their upbringing and surroundings.
00:03:56I admit that family in modern and well-to-do circumstances
00:03:59produce delinquents,
00:04:01just as those families in the lower income brackets do.
00:04:06Some parents have no sense of shame, it is true.
00:04:09And when that is the case,
00:04:11we should take stronger measures in order to make them realize
00:04:14and fulfill their responsibilities.
00:04:16Our girl is a good girl, and we do all we can for her.
00:04:20Unfortunately, she got acquainted with those other girls,
00:04:24the wrong kind of girls.
00:04:26They're the ones that have been leading our daughter into trouble.
00:04:29Please understand that the parole board is working in your interest.
00:04:34Remember that parole is a privilege, not a right.
00:04:38I assure you, sir, I know it will never happen again.
00:04:42I know our daughter will obey all the rules and regulations of the parole board.
00:04:47I understand.
00:04:49But you must remember, today we live in the jungle.
00:04:51We are judged by the company we keep.
00:04:54The more reason why you should choose this company with the greatest care.
00:04:58Juveniles who become delinquents are, as a rule,
00:05:01the sons and daughters of unconcerned parents
00:05:03who accept children as a matter of course.
00:05:07As these juveniles grow older,
00:05:09they do worse things and think in bigger terms.
00:05:12They are the young people who, sooner or later,
00:05:15will become the thugs of tomorrow.
00:05:19You promised me you'd quit running around with that girl, Teddy.
00:05:22Don't you get tired of telling me that?
00:05:24If I didn't like her, I wouldn't bother.
00:05:27Jimmy, I sometimes wonder if you mean that.
00:05:30Yes, I do.
00:05:32Oh, I don't know. Maybe I'm just wasting my time.
00:05:35You're so busy with Teddy, I hardly see you anymore.
00:05:37You're always picking on Teddy. She's my friend.
00:05:40If you'd ask my brother, he'll tell you she always hangs around bad company.
00:05:44Just because your brother is a probation officer
00:05:47gives him no right to pick on her.
00:05:49She never fails to visit his office every week.
00:05:52And neither do I, for that matter.
00:05:54I know. I just mentioned it for your own good.
00:05:58Look, she's an older girl. She's already got you in one jam.
00:06:02That's why you have to visit my brother's office every week.
00:06:05Well, I wouldn't be telling you this, except that...
00:06:09Well, I think an awful lot of you.
00:06:12I know you mean well, Jimmy.
00:06:14And maybe your brother's right.
00:06:16But it's going to take a little time.
00:06:19I'll try.
00:06:21Can I count up that as a promise?
00:06:24Oh, I do like you, Jimmy.
00:06:26Just give me half a chance.
00:06:30What do you say we figure out how much loot we've got so far?
00:06:34For one thing, we have this wristwatch.
00:06:37Remember the sucker we conked in the alley that night?
00:06:40I'll never forget it.
00:06:42You know, I was sure scared.
00:06:44It was the first time I ever lured a man in an alley.
00:06:47I'm hip, but there's a first time for everything, honey.
00:06:52Not bad. She'd bring us a few dollars.
00:06:57Now, with what we have here,
00:06:59plus what we picked up last week,
00:07:01we can go by the two rods.
00:07:03You mean the two guns you were talking about?
00:07:05Yeah.
00:07:07Oh, I almost forgot.
00:07:10Here's some more loot.
00:07:12Where'd you get it?
00:07:13Oh, earlier in the afternoon, I had a drink with some jerk in a booth.
00:07:17The rat wanted a cheap thrill.
00:07:20Oh, I see.
00:07:22Jerk in a booth.
00:07:24The rat wanted a cheap thrill.
00:07:27Honestly, the characters one meets nowadays.
00:07:41How am I doing?
00:07:43For a beginner, you certainly do all right.
00:07:46Won't be long before you equal the best of them.
00:07:49Why don't these things come out in the papers?
00:07:52Things like this happen a dozen times a night.
00:07:55They don't even rate the ink.
00:07:57So why worry?
00:07:58But if we're not careful, we're bound to get caught.
00:08:02Those jerks will never complain.
00:08:04They're too panicky.
00:08:05Wives and all that bit.
00:08:07Teddy, sometimes I'm...
00:08:09I'm afraid of all of this.
00:08:13Why?
00:08:15Well, I only started in it as a lock,
00:08:17and now it looks as if it's getting out of hand.
00:08:20You're just feeling blue, that's all.
00:08:23Troubles at home again?
00:08:25Boy, you said it.
00:08:28I'm sure fed up with home.
00:08:31Especially since my old lady married that good-for-nothing Buzz Brown.
00:08:38Boy, is he a lush.
00:08:40I didn't know that.
00:08:42Well, you do now.
00:08:45He's an old man of mine.
00:08:46You know, if anyone should ask me about him,
00:08:48I'd say he's got as much appeal as a stopped-up sink.
00:08:52Well, I'm sorry to hear that.
00:08:55What do you say we go home and get some rest?
00:08:58And tomorrow we'll get up early and go see Joe about the rods.
00:09:02Oh, I guess you're right.
00:09:03Come on, let's change clothes and get out of here.
00:09:15Come on, let's go.
00:09:46Teddy?
00:09:49Teddy, do you know how to handle a gun?
00:09:52I sure do.
00:09:54A kid in our neighborhood taught me.
00:09:56What a drag.
00:09:58He's doing time at Warwick now.
00:10:00Well, I hope we don't get into trouble buying those guns.
00:10:04Just a minute.
00:10:06I've got a gun.
00:10:08I've got a gun.
00:10:10I've got a gun.
00:10:12I've got a gun.
00:10:15Just the opposite.
00:10:17With a gun, you can always fight your way out of trouble.
00:10:20I understand it now.
00:10:22Why, with a gun, you're somebody.
00:10:25You're getting sharp, kid.
00:10:28Come on, let's go.
00:10:45Who is it?
00:10:47It's Teddy.
00:10:50Just a minute.
00:10:54Big deal.
00:10:56We have to wait for him.
00:11:01I didn't know you had company.
00:11:03Fancy meeting you here.
00:11:05What's with your job at the warehouse?
00:11:07Well, I wasn't feeling so good,
00:11:09so I thought I'd take the morning off.
00:11:11I suppose you're writing out the excuses.
00:11:13Oh, the man can do one day.
00:11:15Oh, come on, girls.
00:11:16Let's go.
00:11:17Let's go.
00:11:18Let's go.
00:11:19Let's go.
00:11:20Let's go.
00:11:21Let's go.
00:11:22Let's go.
00:11:23Let's go.
00:11:24Let's go.
00:11:25Let's go.
00:11:26Let's go.
00:11:27Let's go.
00:11:28The man can do one day.
00:11:29Oh, come on, girls.
00:11:30Let's knock it off.
00:11:32Well, I'm leaving.
00:11:34Bye-bye, everybody.
00:11:36Don't forget to give Joe's regards to your boss.
00:11:41You girls wanted to see me about something.
00:11:44We came to buy the guns you offered.
00:11:46I offered nothing.
00:11:48We only talked about guns.
00:11:50All right, quit complaining.
00:11:51We've got the money.
00:11:53You don't say.
00:11:54Let's see it.
00:12:03Take a good look.
00:12:05Go ahead and feel it.
00:12:07It's real green stuff.
00:12:09Sure it's not stolen money.
00:12:11Look who's asking.
00:12:13No hard feelings.
00:12:15Why worry, Joe?
00:12:17The guns in turn will get us more of the same kind of money.
00:12:20So what?
00:12:21I'm not so sure that I want to sell the guns.
00:12:24Man, you expect us to believe that?
00:12:27The only reason I'm selling them is because I need the money.
00:12:30You need money like I need a hole in my head.
00:12:34All you have to do is sell some of this stuff you keep stashed around here.
00:12:38It's not that easy.
00:12:41If I sell the stuff too fast and too often,
00:12:44my clients will want to pay me less each time they see me.
00:12:48Clients?
00:12:49How do you like this guy?
00:12:51What clients can a fence have?
00:12:53You're a peddler of stolen goods.
00:12:55Not so loud.
00:12:57Look, I'm a legitimate businessman.
00:12:59Well, maybe not so legitimate,
00:13:02but I'm a businessman like anyone else.
00:13:04My clients don't ask me where I get the stuff.
00:13:07I don't ask you girls where you get this stuff.
00:13:09So what matters?
00:13:10Everybody's happy.
00:13:12Well, you better get set to handle a lot more stuff.
00:13:15By putting these guns to use, we should double our business.
00:13:18Just not so fast.
00:13:20Don't get me into any trouble.
00:13:22You know, guns are a dangerous thing to have,
00:13:24especially if you don't know how to handle them.
00:13:26Now look, this gun opens from the top.
00:13:29You load five shots in there.
00:13:31It's ready to go.
00:13:33This is a different type.
00:13:35This loads from the bottom.
00:13:37Pull the clip out.
00:13:38Put your bullets in there.
00:13:39I know how to handle a gun.
00:13:41All right, just watch this, though, so you'll know for sure.
00:13:44Put it in there.
00:13:45You've got to pull this back
00:13:47before you can fire the first shot.
00:13:49You don't on this, but on this you have to pull it back.
00:13:51Understand?
00:13:52I'm very familiar with them.
00:13:55Come on, Dora.
00:13:56Let's conceal these weapons.
00:13:58Okay.
00:14:00It's just a matter of getting used to this trick.
00:14:11Be with you in a minute, Joe.
00:14:13Take your time.
00:14:14Take your time.
00:14:16I dare any cop to reach for this gun.
00:14:19I'll do it.
00:14:20I'll do it.
00:14:21I'll do it.
00:14:22I'll do it.
00:14:23I'll do it.
00:14:25Take your time.
00:14:27I dare any cop to reach for this gun.
00:14:30Go ahead.
00:14:55Teddy.
00:14:56Come over here.
00:14:57It's time for you girls to leave.
00:15:06Whatever you do, make sure those guns don't fall into the wrong hands.
00:15:11Don't worry about it, Joe.
00:15:12We'll see to that.
00:15:13And don't forget, you didn't get the guns from me.
00:15:17You two, remember that.
00:15:18I getcha.
00:15:19Okay.
00:15:20On your way.
00:15:27I forgot my purse.
00:15:32Oh, hurry up.
00:15:40Back so soon?
00:15:41I left my purse.
00:15:42Thanks, Joe.
00:16:13Yes, ma'am.
00:16:19Could I have some change for a phone call?
00:16:42Certainly.
00:16:47Hold it right there.
00:16:56All right.
00:16:57Start walking.
00:17:07All right.
00:17:18All right.
00:17:28All right.
00:17:38All right.
00:17:48Who is it?
00:17:58It's Teddy.
00:17:59Hurry up.
00:18:00Hurry up.
00:18:11Will you girls barge in and out of here till one of the cops don't follow you?
00:18:16Don't say.
00:18:18What joint did you burglarize this time?
00:18:22We never ask you any questions.
00:18:24I'm a businessman.
00:18:26I gotta protect myself.
00:18:28I would, too, if I were handling stolen goods.
00:18:32No one asked you for an opinion.
00:18:34Well, you're getting it.
00:18:35And for free.
00:18:37Knock it off, will you?
00:18:53This stuff's just common merchandise.
00:18:55Practically no value.
00:18:57I don't know how I could get rid of it unless I gave it away.
00:19:00Hold on, Joe.
00:19:01We've got some other trinkets.
00:19:03More?
00:19:05I tell you, you girls are driving me nuts.
00:19:10You sure are getting mad easy.
00:19:16Say, this stuff looks mighty hot to handle.
00:19:21That's your business handling hot stuff.
00:19:23Yeah, but you're bringing me more than I can handle.
00:19:27Sorry.
00:19:28I thought you were somebody.
00:19:30Not a beginner.
00:19:32Where do you think I keep the money to buy all this junk?
00:19:37In the trunk.
00:19:39Right handy.
00:19:44You're a smart girl.
00:19:46You don't miss a trick.
00:19:50Since you girls are so active and willing,
00:19:55I think maybe I got just the deal for you.
00:19:58Let's hear about it.
00:20:00The warehouse where Joy works.
00:20:02Yeah.
00:20:03Go on.
00:20:05Well, Saturday's their payday.
00:20:07They pick the money up from the bank Friday,
00:20:10hold it overnight in the safe.
00:20:12Soft touch for you gals.
00:20:15Ought to be about six grand there.
00:20:19We'll split it 50-50.
00:20:22How are we going to pull a big job like that?
00:20:24Be a cinch.
00:20:26We already got Joy on the inside.
00:20:28You might say the job of getting into the place is half done.
00:20:31You think of everything, don't you?
00:20:34Brains.
00:20:36That's my department.
00:20:38We never thought of that.
00:20:44Here's our chance to double-cross Joe.
00:20:46He's a rat anyway.
00:20:48Never really pays what's coming to us.
00:20:50Won't he be surprised?
00:20:52We'll split the loot amongst us chicks and leave him hanging.
00:20:57I wonder what's keeping Joy.
00:20:59She should have been here by now.
00:21:01Something tells me she's with big brains at the moment.
00:21:04That's easy to find out.
00:21:20Hello.
00:21:31Oh, hello, Joe.
00:21:33Just wanted to know if Joy was there.
00:21:35No.
00:21:37No, as a matter of fact, I haven't seen her all day.
00:21:40Man, you're really too much.
00:21:42But she was supposed to come over to my place.
00:21:46I guess you must be busy working at the warehouse.
00:21:50And I guess only a fool like me couldn't figure that one out.
00:21:54Sorry.
00:21:57I can't stay another minute.
00:22:00I promised to see Teddy and I'm late already.
00:22:03Oh, what do you care?
00:22:05I keep my word.
00:22:06Okay.
00:22:07One more kiss before you go.
00:22:14Can't tell me she's not with Joe.
00:22:16He's as big a liar as he is a crook.
00:22:19Oh, I hope she doesn't take too long.
00:22:22I'm getting tired of waiting.
00:22:24Hey, maybe she's backing out.
00:22:26She won't back out knowing that this job is for money.
00:22:31Leave it to me.
00:22:32I'll do the talking.
00:22:35Listen, chump, I don't manufacture any merchandise.
00:22:38What I get is what you buy.
00:22:43Well, you guys are all the same.
00:22:45You only run a cut-rate variety store because you can buy your merchandise from guys like me.
00:22:52Sure, sure, sure.
00:22:53I know you don't run a drugstore.
00:22:55But can I help it if my source included a batch of vitamin pills and cough medicine with her last delivery?
00:23:02Look, look.
00:23:04All you have to do is add another bargain counter.
00:23:06Call it a drug department.
00:23:08That's what Hank did last week in the town next to you.
00:23:13Well, I ought to know.
00:23:14He buys from me.
00:23:16Sure, you'll do all right.
00:23:19Okay.
00:23:21That's telling them, boss.
00:23:24No brains.
00:23:25Just small potatoes.
00:23:26Yeah, I know.
00:23:27They ought to get peeled and boiled.
00:23:29Oh, you're sharp today.
00:23:32By the way, what's on your mind?
00:23:34Listen, boss.
00:23:36You got to watch out.
00:23:38Those girls are kind of young.
00:23:40They can only mean trouble.
00:23:42Nothing to worry.
00:23:45It's an awful funny setup they got in that rooming house.
00:23:49Why, some of the girls don't even sleep there.
00:23:52And the rumors could get suspicious.
00:23:54And besides, some respectable people live there.
00:23:58When they move in.
00:24:00That's all right, boss.
00:24:01You're just taking advantage of my age.
00:24:04Of course, I'm trying to make an honest dollar.
00:24:06Oh, I've heard that same story 20 times already.
00:24:11Here.
00:24:15Here's a fin.
00:24:16That ought to make you forget your troubles.
00:24:18Troubles?
00:24:19That's what's driving me to drink.
00:24:22No mighty good drink would come in handy at a time like this.
00:24:26Oh, Luke, you never change.
00:24:28But I like you.
00:24:32Thanks, boss.
00:24:34You wouldn't have a drink handy now.
00:24:36And I could save this for a rainy day.
00:24:38What rainy day?
00:24:40Who are you kidding?
00:24:44Okay.
00:24:55Say, by the way, tomorrow morning.
00:24:57Don't drown it.
00:24:59Tomorrow morning, I want you to deliver 36 cases of beer to Sam's Tavern.
00:25:05Beer?
00:25:06Yeah.
00:25:07You mean these girls are hijacking beer now?
00:25:10Some sucker made the mistake of leaving the keys in his truck while he was making a delivery.
00:25:14No telling what they'll bring in next.
00:25:16Yes.
00:25:17I suppose they'd be stealing a corpse from the morgue any day now.
00:25:20There's no stopping them.
00:25:22Don't look good, boss.
00:25:24Look, will you quit your complaining?
00:25:26You're my right-hand man, aren't you?
00:25:28And well-paid for it, too.
00:25:30Don't spread it too thick, boss.
00:25:32I don't feel so good.
00:25:33Here, let me pep that drink up for you.
00:25:35You'll feel a little better.
00:25:43That ought to do it.
00:25:51Now, this is better, boss.
00:25:56Hi, kids.

00:28:24Good.
00:28:25A
00:28:35look
00:28:39Hello. Yeah. Oh yes I've got it. Tonight outside of Kelly's bar. Sure I'll be there. Bye.
00:29:01Another pigeon. Let's hope a couple more call up. You know Ed Finnegan down on the south
00:29:18side. You mean that Finnegan who runs the Shamrock Cafe. Right. I sure do. Pretty good
00:29:24rock cutter you know. I want you to take these stones down to him and have him cut them.
00:29:37Say that ought to bring a pretty penny boss. It's nice merchandise. Girls brought it in
00:29:40the other day. Now look. This Finnegan's a chiseler say. Here's two hundred and fifty
00:29:51bucks. I don't want to pay a penny more. Leave it to me boss. And Luke. I want him back tomorrow
00:29:58night. I got a guy that's leaving town tomorrow night. He'll take them off my hands. You'll
00:30:02have them. OK. On your way. Well isn't this cute. What do you want. Just sit still lover
00:30:13boy or I'll blow your head right off your shoulders. Grab his watch and wallet Dora.
00:30:18I'll never get away with this. I'll have you both in jail within the hour. I don't think
00:30:22so lover boy. Because how would you be able to explain to your wife what you were doing
00:30:26in lover's lane with little Dora. I'll take the car keys too. So he can walk back to town
00:30:32and cool off. You'll never get away with this. Look Charlie. Just sit still if you know what's
00:30:38good for you. I'm very pleased to see that you're keeping up with your weekly visits
00:30:47to this office. I also know that no complaints have come to this office against your daughter.
00:30:53If she keeps away from bad company she will do all right. I can assure you sir we are
00:30:57watching our daughter with an eagle eye. There won't be any trouble around our house for
00:31:02a long while. I'm quite pleased to hear that. But at the same time I'm ashamed to admit
00:31:09that families like you in convenient circumstances are unaware of the problems young girls face
00:31:15today. Particularly young girls in larger cities where pressure of modern life bears
00:31:21down so relentlessly on them. Human beings become criminals in their youth. Why more
00:31:27persons are arrested for crime at the age of 21 than at any other age. The overwhelming
00:31:32majority of first offenders are in their teens. Let me state here that it is highly important
00:31:40that it is highly important for parents today to consider that a firm foot now is much better
00:31:46than a firm foot too late. Would you say that parents are solely to blame if they have the
00:31:51misfortune that one of their youngsters has fallen into trouble with the law? Let me put
00:31:56it this way. It is a growing problem and there can be no mistake as to whom it concerns.
00:32:02It concerns us all. There are frightening stories behind today's headlines. Stories
00:32:09of the young teenagers who get themselves gradually enmeshed by the crime and violence
00:32:14around them. I only ask that you build up enough courage to look frankly at yourselves
00:32:22in this particular case and develop a willingness to battle for your daughter's future if you
00:32:28expect her to be the respectable citizen of tomorrow. It is important to bear in mind
00:32:35that even girls, in whom the good far outweighs the bad, can, owing to unfortunate circumstances,
00:32:42find themselves descending a steep and rapid path towards a life of crime and violence.
00:32:48Only an aroused public fully aware of this matter is the most important single factor
00:32:55in combating juvenile delinquency. Jimmy, I just can't go to the dance with you Friday
00:33:01night. Why not? All the kids will be there. I know, but I just can't go. I've got something
00:33:08important I have to do. Like running around with Teddy and her friend? You leave Teddy
00:33:13out of this. Jimmy, Teddy's not a bad kid. She can always get a grip on herself if she
00:33:20has to. Well, I sort of counted on you for the dance. Oh, I know you did. But Jimmy,
00:33:27I just can't go this time. I like you a lot, Dora. I still don't know whether to believe
00:33:36you or not. Well, I've always liked you, Dora, but you're never around anymore. Even your
00:33:41stepdad says you're hardly home. Oh, quit your kidding. My stepdad hasn't been home
00:33:47for a week. Oh, Jimmy, let's not quarrel like this anymore.
00:34:27Hey, come on. That's the window.
00:34:57Jimmy! Jimmy! Jimmy!
00:35:27Jimmy! Jimmy!
00:35:57Okay, Dora, hit that switch.
00:36:28I would have sworn that light was brighter a second ago.
00:36:32Turn it off!
00:36:57Jimmy! Jimmy! Jimmy!
00:37:27Jimmy! Jimmy!
00:37:58A girl, eh? How did you get in here?
00:38:04I see you got the safe open.
00:38:08Come on. What's up?
00:38:12Okay, since you won't talk, I'll be calling the police.
00:38:20Grab that box and let's get out of here.
00:38:27Honey, I forgot my gun in the office.
00:38:47I told you never to leave that gun out of your hands. It's too late now, stupid.
00:38:51I couldn't help it.
00:38:52Let's go.
00:39:22Chuck, there's been a burglary.
00:39:28Check all the gates and turn on the alarm.
00:39:36Come on.
00:39:51Let's go.
00:40:21Let's go.
00:40:52Do you mean to tell me we went to all that trouble for a measly 14 bucks?
00:40:58You should talk. All you did was stand outside and take in the nice, cool air.
00:41:02How do you like that? If it hadn't been for me, you couldn't even have gotten inside.
00:41:06A lot of good that did us. I also got you the combination to the safe.
00:41:10You said that's where they kept the payroll.
00:41:12Well, look at it!
00:41:13Shut up for a minute, will you?
00:41:15The watchman caught us, not you.
00:41:19Why didn't you tell us it was a flatfoot watching the joint?
00:41:22How should I know?
00:41:24If it hadn't been for you, we'd never have broken into the place.
00:41:27That's right. Go on, blame me. It was your brainstorm.
00:41:31Ain't you girls through talking at this hour of the night?
00:41:35Sorry, Mrs. Murphy.
00:41:37And when you're weeks up, I want you tranced out of here. Do you hear me?
00:41:41Yes, Mrs. Murphy.
00:41:45Fine, how do you do?
00:41:46No money, and you have to leave your gun there.
00:41:49And your fingerprints all over the safe.
00:41:52You're just like a pal to remind me.
00:41:55How about yours? They must be all over the window.
00:41:58Me? I was wearing gloves.
00:42:04That's right. I clued her earlier.
00:42:06It's a wonder you remembered.
00:42:09I wonder what Joe would think if he knew about this.
00:42:12He'd probably laugh right in our faces.
00:42:16Would you like a little drink, honey?
00:42:18Sure.
00:42:41Easy boy.
00:42:44Honey, I picked up a little trinket that I thought you might like.
00:42:50For me?
00:42:52Nothing but the best for you, honey.
00:42:59By the way, I'm going to arrange for Luke to get you another apartment this afternoon.
00:43:05Oh, how sweet you are.
00:43:10I may have made a mess by forgetting the gun, but what do you say about the car?
00:43:14They'll trace it.
00:43:16I'll call the boys in the morning.
00:43:18You know, they were awfully brave to loan you that car.
00:43:21One favor cancels another.
00:43:24I wouldn't be too sure.
00:43:26Well, I'm leaving. I'm going home right now.
00:43:29If I were you, I'd beat it out of town.
00:43:33That's what we're going to do.
00:43:35On 14 bucks, goodbye.
00:43:50Do you think she's going to cause us any trouble?
00:43:52No, she won't. She's in it as deep as we are.
00:43:55But what are we going to do?
00:43:57We'll get money from Joe and get as far out of town as we can.
00:44:01Who do you think he'll lend it to us?
00:44:04We'll find out in the morning.
00:44:09No, please.
00:44:13No, honestly, I'm not that kind of a girl.
00:44:18You must think I'm a cheap floozy, but I'm not.
00:44:23Not really.
00:44:34Ouch!
00:45:05I told you to not pull either of those guns out of your hands. They're hot.
00:45:09All right, so we made a mistake.
00:45:11I knew you gals would get me in trouble.
00:45:13I'm going to leave town.
00:45:15But wait till that Joy stops around. I'll tell her a thing.
00:45:19What about us, Joe?
00:45:21You gals can make it to any town, if you're not too particular how you do it.
00:45:26We only wanted to borrow the money.
00:45:28Money? I haven't got any money.
00:45:30Now, come on. Clear out of here, both of you. Get out. Come on.
00:45:33Stand right where you are, Joe.
00:45:37Listen.
00:45:39This is going too far.
00:45:41All right, Dora.
00:45:43Go to the trunk and see what he's got in there. It's in the way of money.
00:45:51Who is it?
00:45:52It's me, Luke.
00:45:54You busy, boss?
00:45:57Yeah.
00:45:59Yeah, I'll see you later.
00:46:03Hmm?
00:46:12I'm sorry it had to be this way, Joe.
00:46:15You're just a couple of common thieves.
00:46:18Don't worry about it. Helping us will bring you good luck.
00:46:22I hope the cops pick you up before you spend a penny of my money.
00:46:26They'll have to catch us first.
00:46:33Come on.
00:46:54Who is it?
00:46:55It's me, Joy.
00:47:03Come in.
00:47:06Well, I heard all about last night. Big deal.
00:47:10Teddy was here already?
00:47:11Yeah, and you better get out of here fast. I don't want the cops finding you in my joint.
00:47:15I know it, Joe.
00:47:18I'm in an awful mess.
00:47:20You know, Teddy and Dora forced me into this thing.
00:47:24You were willing.
00:47:26They said they'd tell my mother about my hanging around your place so much.
00:47:30What of it?
00:47:33I want to talk to you about something serious.
00:47:37If it's money you want to get out of town, you're too late.
00:47:41Teddy and Dora got it all with the gun.
00:47:45No, it's something else.
00:47:47Maybe I shouldn't bring it up, but I just can't help it, Joe.
00:47:52What is it?
00:47:54Well, Joe, I'll have to speak to my mother.
00:48:00Hey, I don't get it. What do you mean?
00:48:03Joe, I feel sick.
00:48:07You do?
00:48:10Joe, do you still love me?
00:48:13Of course I do.
00:48:15Well, will it be all right if I tell my mother about us?
00:48:21You better make yourself clear, Joy.
00:48:24Joe, don't you know what I'm talking about?
00:48:26Joe, you've got to tell my mother that you'll marry me.
00:48:29You wouldn't be getting any screwy ideas, would you?
00:48:33You don't care a thing about me, do you?
00:48:36Look, I thought we had an understanding.
00:48:40I was in the mood, and you were willing.
00:48:44Well, maybe we could work out something so I won't look like just a tramp.
00:48:49It was just a mistake, a mistake any girl could make.
00:48:53Are you trying to make trouble?
00:48:55I mean, I made trouble for myself.
00:48:58I knew better. I knew better.
00:49:01I just couldn't help myself.
00:49:04I think you've got rocks in your head trying to sell me a screwy sales talk like that.
00:49:09Joe, you were the only one. There wasn't anybody else.
00:49:14You're going to have a tough time proving it.
00:49:16Joe, it was only you. Joe, please.
00:49:19Look, you've been alone with other guys.
00:49:21If you weren't having fun, what were you doing?
00:49:24Joe.
00:49:31Here, go get a druggist to give you something for it.
00:49:39Boy, you're rotten, through and through.
00:49:42Just plain no good.
00:49:48Come on, get out of here.
00:49:54Come on.
00:50:24Come on.
00:50:54The two boys, friends of Teddy and Dora, wouldn't talk at first.
00:50:59But a uniformed officer of the law looks mighty impressive to a teenager,
00:51:03especially if he's guilty.
00:51:06The boys admit that they loaned their car to the two girls the night before.
00:51:11This leads to their being brought in for further questioning.
00:51:16The two girls, friends of Teddy and Dora, wouldn't talk at first.
00:51:20But a uniformed officer of the law looks mighty impressive to a teenager,
00:51:25especially if he's guilty.

00:51:34This leads to their being brought in for further questioning.
00:51:39The boys admit that they loaned their car to the two girls the night before.
00:51:44Trixie? Joe? Yeah. Hey, honey, why don't you come on over? You know there are no other
00:52:01women in my life but you. Okay, I'll be waiting. Okay, goodbye.
00:52:31Hi, kids. Hi. You mind if I change my clothes? No, go ahead. Leaving so soon? You don't think
00:52:47we're gonna stay here, do you? By now every cop in town knows who we are and they're looking
00:52:52for us. Mm-hmm. Joe just told me that you kids held him up with a gun. I suppose you
00:52:57tried to get money from him, too. No, I don't want any of his money. I don't need it. I'm
00:53:04not afraid. If you stick around, they'll soon catch up with you. Then where will you be?
00:53:10She's not leaving town. Joe's going to marry her. Isn't that what you told us? That's between
00:53:16Joe and me. We didn't know it was that serious. Say, um, I don't suppose I could borrow your
00:53:24gun for an hour or so. You mean you're ready for another job that quick? Maybe. Can't you see
00:53:32we're leaving? Look, I don't have any money but maybe I could trade you for the gun. Trade? Why,
00:53:39we need all the money we can get. I'd like to loan you the gun but there isn't enough time. Well,
00:53:45maybe I could trade you for my coat. It's a pretty good coat and maybe you could sell it on the way.
00:53:55I don't know. Look, you don't want a cop to find it on you. Maybe she has an idea there. You know,
00:54:04anything Joe sells is hot or he wouldn't part with it. Okay, let me have the coat.
00:54:09Remember, if a cop finds it on you, it's yours. Don't worry.
00:54:24Fine. Good luck.
00:54:39Honey, I gotta run down to the liquor store. I'll be right back. Don't be too long, honey.
00:55:09I'll be right back.
00:55:39I'll be right back.
00:56:09What are you doing here? Waiting for Joe. So am I. Well, wait down the hall. I came here first.
00:56:26Are you talking to me? Yes, you. Why, you low-down tramp.
00:56:56All right, now you get out of here and get out fast before I pull the trigger.
00:57:26I'll be right back.
00:57:56What are you doing here? Waiting for you. Where's Trixie? Trixie? Is that her name? She ran out on you, Joe.
00:58:17Look, what do you want anyway? I thought we'd settled matters. Oh, no, Joe. We're just beginning.
00:58:33That's Harry. I've got a feeling the cops are already looking for us, Teddy.
00:58:37If they are, they're 5,000 miles in the wrong direction.
00:58:54You can laugh because I'm just another cheap kid who looked kind of good to you. You couldn't pass up anything that was easy to get.
00:59:01You're just upsetting yourself, honey. Don't honey me.
00:59:06A last-minute bulletin just received. Advice is that the two girls who boldly burglarized a central chemical company's warehouse last night and slugged the watchman have been identified.
00:59:17Their arrest is expected at any moment. Come on, let's get out of here.
01:00:17No wonder you're so anxious to get rid of me now that you've picked up that new girl.
01:00:38Let's not be ridiculous. Things like her wash up on a beach every night.
01:00:43I get it now. I suppose I was washed up on the beach, too.
01:00:51Where'd you get that gun? The familiar? Yeah. I got it from Teddy just now. Take a good look at it, Joe.
01:01:01Look, maybe we can talk matters over. No, Joe. You're not fooling me one bit. Take a good look at the gun. Without this gun, you'd be up to your same old lies.
01:01:18Well, it's too late, Joe. I'm going to kill you. You'll never get away with it.
01:01:42Hello, operator. I want the police. Joe, Joe, are you all right? Hello, police. I just killed a man. I'll be waiting when you get here.
01:01:59I'm at the Thornton Towers. Joe, it's me, Luke. You folks wait here. I'll go and get a crowbar. I'll get one. Come here.
01:02:28All right, step back inside the wall, please. Come on. You going someplace? Yeah. No, you're not.
01:02:46Dora? Dora, it's me, Jimmy. Jimmy, I was hoping you'd get here in time. Please don't talk like that. You can be all right in no time. You just got to be.
01:03:15Dora, I... Please, Jimmy. There's something I've got to say, and I know I haven't much time. You warned me about Teddy and the gang, and I didn't listen. The truth is I didn't want to. Jimmy, you were so right. And your brother, too. He's trying to help kids like me.
01:03:45And he's doing his best, but he can't do it alone. I don't quite understand. That's the trouble. People just don't understand the things the girls and I did. It wasn't for the money.
01:04:09Look, Teddy's folks, they've got all the money in the world. What was it for? The thrill? You tell yourself it is, and you believe it. But, oh, Jimmy, it really isn't. It's so hard to explain.
01:04:35It's sort of getting back at the world for so many things. Jimmy, when I was a little girl, my parents didn't want me. They didn't care. I guess I started life from the wrong foot. From the moment I was born.
01:05:05I was like so many others. I was an unwanted child, and I didn't belong. Jimmy, when you're in a gang, you're somebody. You belong. That's all I wanted out of life, was the feeling of belonging.
01:05:29Was it too much to ask for, just to belong?
01:05:39Dora? Dora? Oh, my. Come on.
01:05:47Dora?
01:05:48The girls continue to come with no end in view. For many of them, it's no longer their first offense. This police lineup is a grim reminder to parents that one of these girls could be your own daughter.
