00:00A year ago, Finals Week wasn't about exams and deadlines for me.
00:05It was about watching my hometown drawn in what the New York Times call the worst flood in recent history in Brazil.
00:12As floodwaters rose, swallowing streets and memories, I sat thousands of miles away, holding on to the hope that my family was safe.
00:22But what stayed with me wasn't the destruction itself. It was the small, yet powerful acts of compassion.
00:32Neighbors carried each other through waste-deep water, and strangers opened their doors to those who lost everything.
00:40That week, I learned that resilience is not about never falling. It's about who we become in the face of it.
00:47It's knowing that no matter how strong the current, we rise by holding on to each other.
00:54And with that in mind, as my parents stepped into the unknown, becoming the first in their families to leave the countryside for the city,
01:04at this moment today, I take my own step, becoming the first in my family to earn a college degree.
01:17Their courage paved the way for my dreams, and this moment is as much theirs as it is mine.
01:34So, mom and dad, who don't speak much English,
01:38obrigado por viverem meus sonhos comigo e por inspirarem a lutar sempre por eles.
01:47So, I'll see you next time.
