00:00Hello and welcome to Guardian Talks. My name is Fadima Rachel. Today, we shift focus to a growing concern that's turning moments of celebration into legal nightmares, the abuse of the Naira.
00:12Spreading of the Naira used to be considered as the part of favourites and highlights, but now considered as a legal red flag. And this could cost you more than money alone, it could also cost you your freedom.
00:22Section 21 of the Central Bank of Nigerian Act 2007 clearly criminalises any act of mutilating, abusing and stepping on the Nigerian Naira notes.
00:34The clash between culture and legality has led to the arrest and prosecution of top-notch celebrities like E-Money, Bob Risky, Terry Templar and the likes.
00:43But the law is not against you having fun at your celebrations, and for this reason we present to you 10 money spraying alternatives you can consider at your next celebration.
00:54Number 1. Set up a stylish money box. Place a decorated box near the celebrant, so guests can drop cash gifts neatly. No drama, just class.
01:04Number 2. Appoint a trusted money collector. It could either be a friend or family member. Someone with a bag or even a POS device, collecting gifts the respectful way.
01:17Number 3. Go through the discreet rounds. Garner must move or envelope. Hand over your cash gift quietly in a sealed envelope or a small secured bag. No need for a show, just sincerity.
01:30Number 4. Give meaningful non-monetary gifts. Think outside the cash. Framed photos, favourite books, custom artworks or useful home items all show how thoughtful and caring you are.
01:45Number 5. Try gift vouchers. Whether it's a spa day or a supermarket run, vouchers give the celebrant the freedom to choose exactly what they need.
01:55Number 6. Make a direct bank transfer. Simple, safe and traceable. Just ask the celebrant account details and send your love digitally.
02:08Number 7. QR code donations. Some celebrants now print QR codes. Just scan, transfer and done. No physical Naira involved.
02:18Number 8. Set up a POS station. Place a card machine at the event. Guests can easily swipe their cards and make their gifts cashless.
02:29Number 9. Use mobile wallet transfer. With apps like Hoppe, Pampe or Moneypoint, sending money takes seconds. No need for cash at home.
02:39And lastly, number 10. Bring a thoughtful gift basket or hamper. A well-packed hamper with food, toiletries or luxury treats. Always eat the right notes.
02:52As tradition shifts and the law tightens. Remember, ignorance is no longer an excuse in the face of the law. Respect the Naira and celebrate smartly.
