01:30arena to begin the night's festivities with an evening of boxing yes a capacity crown of about
01:3810 000 is expected here at the cozy newcastle arena the scene for a world championship doubleheader
01:44our main event features a popular rising star looking to impress the american boxing fans the
01:49way he has captivated them here in great britain also you'll see a title holder seeking to emerge
01:55from the shadows of his division by avenging his only defeat hello again everybody i'm steve albert well
02:03originally tonight's main event was scheduled to be terry norris versus julio cesar vazquez for the
02:09undisputed 154 pound title but late last week the fight was cancelled the reason undisclosed there have
02:16been two separate reports on the cancellation though it was said that vazquez was unhappy with
02:21the contract while another report claimed norris withdrew due to illness neither report has been
02:26confirmed and neither fighter is here in newcastle tonight so now our focus falls on a twin bill
02:33featuring twin bill featuring two champions with very different paths to their championships and fame
02:39and here at showtime championship boxing this may be one of those nights when
02:42showtime is truly the operative word the charismatic brass young phenom called prince nasim hamed should
02:49see to that hamed the pride of sheffield england has carved out a most impressive resume and he's
02:54done it with a flair and while the prince is a hot local commodity and england's new favorite son
03:00in contrast our first bout features a champion who still seeks respect wba super middleweight champ
03:07fabulous frankie lyles has the misfortune of being overshadowed by the division's other champions most notably
03:12roy jones jr to whom lyles lost at the 88 olympic box-offs as we welcome in the fight dr ferdy
03:18pacheco and ferdy while lyles is a champion he still battles for recognition why not he's in the
03:23shadow of the insurmountable object roy jones jr that shadow that he casts over collins over malinga
03:29and then way down the line over miles miles got to look very good tonight to start creeping in with
03:34collins and uh and malinga it's good it's a tough road he's got to go well although often overlooked
03:40lyles continues to plug away birdie how about lyle's style his strengths and his weaknesses well
03:45he's a lefty and a very good one and he's a boxer puncher he's looking for a fight where the other
03:51man littles comes to him to fight in that case he predicts a knockout within five or six rounds that
03:56should make it interesting so an important night for frankie lyles as it is for the champion in our
04:01main event wbo featherweight title holder prince nasim hamet as we bring in our other partner bobby
04:06chez and bobby how significant is this american tv debut for hamet well i think it's very significant
04:11for nasim because let's face it usa has more championship fights more regular fights each and
04:16every year than any other place there is the big money the big support there if you want to be
04:19famous get the exposure and the multi-millions usa has to be in it well hamet certainly does have
04:24a rather unique befuddling style we know he's entertaining we're just not sure how good he is bobby
04:30your thoughts on his style how you'd compare his skills with other top featherweights like boom boom
04:34johnson and wilfredo vasquez well there you can see he can he can certainly dance but can he fight
04:38as well as he dances boom boom johnson and vasquez the main things they have on their resume that the
04:43prince does not are quality opposition that they've defeated his speed is probably better than both his
04:47power comparable so i think his basic skills steve put him in with vasquez or johnson i'd like to
04:52see him fight one of those so i could truly gauge him well you don't know if he's going out for a night of
04:57dancing or boxing so it's fight night here in england with a pair of world championships coming your way

05:58doubleheader coming up first fabulous frankie lyles versus tim littles for the wba 168 pound or super
06:06middleweight title back in august of 1994 in far off tucuman argentina frankie lyles upset a fighter
06:13named steve little to win the wba super middleweight belt this after little had stunned two-time world
06:19champion michael nunn for the title lyles has successfully defended the title three times including
06:24a win over none but let's go back to july 7th 1992 that's when lyles suffered the only blemish on his
06:31professional record a 12-round decision to a fighter named tim littles which cost lyles the usba super
06:37middleweight championship it was a good tight hard-fought battle with both fighters escaping from
06:43trouble at various times in the end though it was littles who emerged victorious on points
06:48a close but unanimous decision tonight after nearly four years in waiting frankie lyles gets his chance
06:54for sweet redemption i've lost a 10 before uh we've had we were he was a rival for me i asked this
07:02answer a lot of questions for me where i'm at now i think he has more to prove because he has to prove
07:07that he can beat me and i beat him as a professional already a lot of people ask me what about what i what
07:12i learned from the first fight it's four years ago uh so i i've learned a lot i've come along you know
07:19i've come a long ways i've won two i've won two championships since then so basically i i bring a
07:26lot of experience a lot of championship you know experience into this fight with me and i know what it's
07:32like being on top something's going to have to give you know my will to win i think it's going to
07:39overcome frank frank lyle's will to win and that's that's what's going to be the bottom line right
07:44there the will to win man you have to want it and i want it and i'm going to get it while lyle's only
07:50losses of pro was to littles he did beat the littles three times on the amateurs they know each other
07:55so well for so many similarities except for one major difference lyle's is the champion what's your
08:01take on this fight well to get a championship you got to come get it or as my partner bobby just
08:05says you got to bring it to get it if he brings it to lyle's if littles brings it to lyle's and the
08:10counter punching of lyle's can neutralize him and knock him out that's what lyle's is counting on
08:14otherwise we have a chess game and it could be a yawn of an evening how about your specific
08:19prediction of the rematch i think lyle's will win and retain his championship all right and how much
08:24of a factor tonight is the first fight between lyle's and littles bobby your thoughts you know i don't
08:29think it's going to be a real big factor they fought as a professional as professionals only once
08:33littles getting the win but they fought as an amateur several times frank lyle's getting all
08:37the decisions so they know each other very well i think tonight the records are so close 27-1 28-1
08:42they're the same age except for a few months turned pro almost exactly the same year
08:46everything is so close it's really truly a toss-up two of the nicest guys you ever want to meet
08:50but i think in the stretch by decision the champion retains lyle's does predict a sixth round knockout
08:55littles thinks it's going to go the distance right now let's check the numbers as we take a look
09:00at the tail of the tape both lyle's and littles are 31 the biggest disparities in height and reach
09:04at six two and a half lyle's is three and a half inches taller big five inch reach advantage for
09:08lyle's who originally weighed in at 169 a pound over the limit returned about an hour and 40 minutes
09:14later checked in at 167 and a quarter shedding almost two pounds in a short time we'll see if that is a
09:20a factor in any way and of the wba rules for this championship fight scoring is under the 10-point
09:25must system there are three scoring judges no standing eight count the three knockdown rule is
09:31in effect only the referee can stop the fight a fighter cannot be saved by the bell except in the
09:37last round if an accidental foul occurs before the end of the fourth round it is ruled a technical draw
09:43if it happens after the completion of the fourth round they go to the scorecards and only completed
09:48rounds are scored so here at the newcastle arena as we take a look at tim littles in the ring we're

10:12his only career loss march 5th of 1994 a fourth round tko against james tony outside of that littles has
10:22never been decked and tim littles looking on as the champion frankie lyle's makes his way
10:32into the ring lyle's told us yesterday more than revenge it's that his title is on the line in most
10:40cases the pressure is on the champion because as bobby chezz likes to say he has something to lose
10:46littles told us he doesn't see any pressure here
10:52lyle said he'll he'll feel things out the first few rounds and knock littles out in the sixth
10:57he feels that littles his challenger will come to him littles can't afford to have rounds slip by
11:02lyle's will try to establish his jab early use feints head movement angles feeling that little's best
11:08weapon is consistent pressure he says he's made for littles he'll come to me so we're getting set

12:43michigan in the united states he weighed in at 11 stone 13 pounds for 167 u.s pounds his record includes
12:5427 wins only one defeat with 18 wins coming by way of knockout here is the wba number one rank super
13:04middleweight in the world please welcome the fighter known as the doctor of style tim little
13:18and his opponent across the ring on my left fighting out of the red corners the defending
13:23world champion wearing white trunks with blue trim fighting out of los angeles california by way of
13:31destroying michigan in the united states his weight 11 stone 13 and one quarter pounds or 167 and one
13:41quarter u.s pounds his record includes 28 wins only one loss one no contest with 17 wins coming by way of
13:50knockout tonight he is making the fourth defense of his title please welcome the defending wba super
13:57middleweight champion of the world introducing the fabulous ricky lyle once again a referee in charge

14:14all right gentlemen this will be a clean fight protect yourself at all times obey my commands at all

14:34so here in newcastle england we're getting set for the wba super middleweight championship
14:40tim littles handled by the venerable octogenarian trainer eddie fudge who's trained so many big
14:47names over the years is frankie lyle's is handled by freddie roach former brave savage fighter
14:57born on valentine's day soft-spoken and hard punching very humble personable honest outside the ring
15:03as bobby pointed out two very nice guys frankie lyle's his first fight in seven months coming
15:11off the unanimous decision over brazilian mauricio amiral in stuttgart he's tall rangy he's a southpaw
15:17he's a cool pro actually a natural right-hander learned to fight southpaw the amateurs knocked the
15:22guy out with the left hand and said hey this is pretty good i'll keep doing this and tim littles the
15:27number one contender he's a a world-class fighter always ready not spectacular but southpaw and said
15:33he has no problem with left-handers at all he's bought just about every kind of left-hander no
15:38problem he says that's not a problem he said at one point he fought five in a row including frankie
15:43lyle's and he beat them all you know some fighters have a theory that the right hand down the middle
15:50others the left hook and tim little said his left hook is his dominant hand his left hand's dominant
15:54the hook and the uppercut he likes it that is not a knockdown waved off by mitch halpern it was a
16:03slip it was a solid shove is what it was in spite of what he says he's been throwing that right hand
16:09quite a bit as uh tim little i mean we're looking for the other and he's getting throwing it with some
16:14force the only problem he said he he has with uh southpaws and in particular the tall rangy lean long-legged
16:22frankie lyle's is that the feet get tangled up there's a good solid straight right by tim littles
16:27that sends fabulous frankie lyle's into the ropes in front of us
16:33frankie lyle's has been using a reasonable counter right hook which has been keeping
16:36littles a little off balance but that right hand is starting to find its mark
16:39there was that counter right look right uppercut was right on the button
16:52he said if he comes to get me he's going to get flattened and he did first round
16:56he is not in good shape frankie lyle's looking to finish off littles and there's the bell
17:12there could be something wrong with the bell as you saw our clocks at about 56 57 seconds i think it was a
17:19two minute round he's only a two minute it was a two minute round how do you like that and tim
17:24littles went to the wrong corner he went to a neutral corner
17:29so the argument from the frankie lyle's corner they're screaming it was a two minute round and
17:34tim littles off the hook well that right hand was bounced off and then the left just crunches
17:41littles as he goes down and he gets up in bad shape bobby yeah you know that right uppercut and then the
17:45right hook behind it again he's in trouble you can see there he's totally stunned another right
17:50hand that doesn't really land eventually the straight left is what puts him down major controversy
17:55here at the beginning of the fight what a break for the challenger tim little to look like he was ready
18:01to go in the first round it was a two minute round well there's a lot of shrugging going on all around
18:07ringside all all of the officials all of the officials are just going kind of going well what can we do
18:13but boy what a big big big break that was for littles who looked like he was on his way out so it's
18:20round two and we certainly hope this goes three minutes well they've already set up the appeal with
18:25that lyle's is staggered oh and down he goes but he's pushed by littles wwf tactics here employed by both
18:38fighters littles clamming watch the head he's cut already little has a cut over his left eye
18:47littles hitting on the break things getting very ugly very messy here and mitch halper wants to settle
18:53things down and take a look at that cut let's go doc let's go come on he wants to get the doctor up here
18:59that was an axel headbutt
19:05he's okay
19:08okay it's off the head but look at that cut by the left eye
19:13okay can you see exactly where it's located it looks like it's in the eyelid
19:19and that's not a good piece of news
19:23and miss halper has to caution tim littles oh this is a foul fest from the start man what a straight
19:29oh look at this holding and hitting now by littles and it gets worse and worse hey that's behind the
19:34punch and two kidney punches that was three fouls in a row i'll tell you what this has turned into a
19:38solid street fight something you might see on the streets of philadelphia boy dude and if it changed
19:43by some streak of luck how could you explain it with that two-minute round and lyle just walked
19:48into a left hook by littles littles bleeding around the left eye while swinging a miss for the right by
19:53littles as he pours in and the grappling tactics continue and a low blow continues that was a very low
20:00blow the referee did not say anything but it was low and right now you can see that littles is somewhat
20:04desperate he's he sees and he senses that that cut may cause things to go the wrong way he's behind
20:09on the scorecard for that first knockdown in the short round it's going to be interesting from here
20:14out tim littles who could have been out of there the first round except for a two-minute round
20:20they're holding it hitting but tim littles with mitch halper trying to get in there and break it up
20:26he's asking lyle's if he's okay intentional foul taking a point away from tim littles you can take
20:35your time and he's telling friday you take your time
20:42he takes a point away from tim littles as this goes worse and worse in terms of ugliness
20:49okay let's go well it is a desperation no question of tim littles has caused him to fight in such an
20:56extraordinarily rough manner these guys have met many times and had no trouble now it's nothing but
21:01trouble well they finally reached the third minute of the second round i've got that straightened out
21:06that was ludicrous you know what part of the problem is either southward or the doctor
21:13fighter will get tangled up the crossing from different angles b frank wants to step back in
21:17box and littles wants a war so this alleyway raises on lyle's getting tagged by that straight right by
21:25littles who stumbles to the canvas it's a knockdown for lyle
21:30he's jumping around and running around like a colt but is anything like a colt he has
21:39not his senses with him and the bell saved him again twice saved by the bell in two minutes oh my
21:46goodness that's all right let's get through the round so you're trying too hard okay
22:03in the water it's all right yeah it's all right
22:06yeah yeah you had the man tim just take your time okay yeah the referee he was holding on
22:20man don't worry about it that's got that point yeah that's all right that's all right you gotta watch
22:24the hold right all right yeah that's why i was still here because he was holding look here
22:28all right let's take a look at this butt here's where littles gets hurt then as he gets up we can't
22:36see it but we think he hit the rope and cut his eye and here we go for round three it has been
22:46a foul fest from the start there's a straight right hand by little
22:50with the right hand and lyle goes through the ropes clear through the ropes i tell you what it was
22:57the right hand not the left hook like i said down the middle he hurt frankie he hit him again and
23:02he hurt him again the champion says he's all right we resume round three wild swings and misses
23:08he's not going to fight the wrestling tactics tied out called by mitch halpert
23:16as littles just bodily threw lyle's to the canvas
23:21and gets right on the face of littles he said he'll take another point away if you do it again
23:25well he's pretty soon gonna have to start talking about disqualifying because littles is almost out
23:30of control he's doing everything you can do in a street fight eddie fudge told me the corner he said
23:35don't get carried away you're over anxious you got him just relax and do your talk
23:41and mitch halpert warns him again uh mitch came to break that time because that was a very very
23:46strong punch and he'd warned him before i mean he could have taken a point then littles has got to
23:51settle down i'll tell you what frank doesn't appear to have his head completely clear but he's moving
23:56smart and staying outside and he's holding what he has to very frustrating obviously for littles
24:01hating to be held while he's in charge sam little is going in like a wild man
24:06combination of the head by little
24:14littles goes right back at lyle's good down hook by lyle's there on the way in
24:18little's having his trouble getting in without getting tangled up and tied up it's like these
24:23two guys got mangums they're just shooting at each other and seeing which one can hit first
24:27because both of them are shooting power shots right hand by littles right above us
24:33and again he pushes lyle's to the deck no knockdown somewhere along the line he's going to warn him
24:38about that throwing a fighter not how many times has he done that well you know that time i don't
24:42think he really did i think he just pushed him off and lyle's just kind of went down
24:46and lyle's in trouble right there for a brief moment boy anybody that said this was going to be
25:01boring and i'm one of them uh chess game is dead wrong this is a war and both work but like gutsy
25:08type fighters it's very uncharacteristic of their styles if you look at their great history well tell
25:14you what something you saw in the interview with tim littles he said he had to impose his will
25:19he didn't want to be broken he's showing that he was hurt early he came back strong but lyle said
25:25let him come get me and i'll uppercut him to death and he's been doing that he has been both men have
25:30been imposing their will what a fight the pace has not let up we come up to 15 seconds remaining of the
25:36third round oh no that was tim littles what a beautiful counter right here a perfect counter
25:43right hook the same thing that got him in trouble in the first time he staggers to his feet forget
25:48about it oh once they land on their face they don't get up and he landed foot on his face what a fight
25:56and what a finish a ferocious right hook by frankie lyle's who points his fist at our table saying
26:03who's the champion frankie lyle's did what he had to do he got hurt he waited he waited he waited and
26:08he knew tim littles was going to keep running keep jumping and being over anxious a little careless
26:12he set up a beautiful counter right hook lights out but for these two guys bobby these two guys that
26:18claimed they were going to have a chess game forget the chess game they were throwing rocks at each other you
26:23know lyle's people said six rounds and littles thought it might go to distance but he sounded
26:28like it was going to be a fight i think the cut kind of forced it this was a chess game with real
26:33swords and real horses i mean they really went at each other that was some kind of fierce fighting
26:39sometimes when fighters have fought each other so many times they're so used to it it gets a boring
26:44fight this was like they'd never seen each other and got in a dark room and i think fellas perhaps a
26:49poetic justice a lot of the fact that littles was really taken off the hook in that
26:53first round when the round went only two minutes this would have been a a big big controversy had
27:00littles been able to score a knockdown or knock out rather than boy what what could you have explained
27:06it to i mean what could you imputed and how about mitch halper this guy deserves hazard pay after what he
27:13just went through and and what the the kind of fouls and the kind of intensity that we saw here it seems
27:20like almost every night that we have a showtime fight we come across one of these nights that's just
27:25the acme of violence and thank goodness tim littles is okay he gets up to the cheers of the crowd good
27:33atmosphere after a very wicked atmosphere during the fight we have an old saying in the gym too sometimes
27:39when they fall face first normally you don't even have to count just get their row but he walked
27:44into a clean shot lyle set him up waited caught him coming in used his own momentum a quick clean sharp
27:50right hand that i don't believe tim littles ever saw lyle showing his punching power boy and had this
27:55thing going on he had dug himself such a huge hole not only was he going down and remember they took a
28:00point away from so he was 20 and 15 and it was only the second round so it is redemption for
28:0931 year old frankie louse retaining his title and exacting revenge well let's take a look at this
28:14fantastic finish and we'll look at it from every corner so i'm sure that's about as good as he gets
28:20with a right hook that's about as good look at the way he landed on his face bobby take the next one
28:24which is going to be the same thing bobby it's going to end up the same once again you see littles coming
28:28in coming in as eddie fudge said he was being a little careless too aggressive or anxious
28:33and he just walked in not caring about defense looking to land a big right he walked into a big
28:38right right hook well i think a lot of that was a product of the exhaustion also it had been down so
28:44much and that was right on the bottom i don't know how he could have taken that in his title defense
28:50number four for lyle's who ups his last look 29 and one so you know last look from the overhead
28:56roy jones jr was beaten by lyle's and the amateurs and now you see why he has the guns to keep
29:03anybody at that weight on the floor
29:08so it is a third round tko for fabulous frankie louse who retains his wba super middleweight
29:16championship what a wild opening fight here in newcastle england frankie louse
29:27with littles falling to 27 and two he's all the other sent back to james tony in 94 but it's fabulous
29:34frankie louse taking the coveted belt all the way back to los angeles california where he resides a belt he
29:40first one back in august of 94 almost two years ago
29:47so coming up next here at the newcastle arena in newcastle england our featured attraction
29:53the wbo featherweight championship local sensation prince nassim hamed versus number one contender
30:00daniel alicea both undefeated so bobby chez at the at the top we said that allows despite being a
30:11champion still seeking recognition well he hasn't had that signature fight yet that he loved the dream
30:17fight with roy jones jr but what do you think of tonight's performance well you know he showed it
30:22that he was very gutsy but he also showed that he has you know maybe some problems with that straight
30:26right hand that roy jones jr may be able to keep him on the floor because he was down he was hurt
30:30several times by tim littles but he also showed some nice professionalism some poise he waited he set
30:35his man up when he took him out he took him out clean and that's very impressive well he he exacts
30:42revenge and he retains his title but this was controversial laced right from the beginning
30:48with the first round not even going into the third minute and it really took tim littles off the hook
30:56yeah sure did he was down he was hurt you could see he wasn't completely clear-headed he may or may
31:00not have survived the round but it's a big question mark is ended in somewhat of a poetic justice type
31:05manner so what do you think frankie lyles does next he has a host of options of course as we said his
31:11super bout would be with a man he split with in the amateurs fellow by the name of roy jones
31:16but what do you think is going on in his mind right now as he thinks ahead to the future you
31:20know it's really difficult to tell what's in his mind but i know he does want roy jones jr as that
31:24would be his his ali frazier that would be his big dream fight but you know we have other guys out
31:29there malanga is out there collins is out there nigel ben still lurking in the wings there are some good
31:34fighters that can give him great exposure and test him truly irish steve collins the wbo champ is
31:40scheduled to meet former wbc super middleweight champ nigel ben next month in uh in manchester
31:46we of course got a good look at tulani sugar boy malinga out of south africa who put on a tremendous
31:53display back on march 2nd to open up this arena here uh by defeating nigel ben so he was on his
31:59game it would be a good fight with any of them obviously roy jones jr is the most attractive the
32:03most lucrative and because they've already fought it's the tiebreaker but what do you think
32:07lyles told us yesterday in our meetings he said i've got the style the correct style to beat roy jones
32:13and the pros would you concur well you know it's possible if he does everything right if roy makes
32:18some mistakes he roy does some things that are so unorthodox because he's so good he can get away
32:23with things that other fighters just simply can't if he jumps into that right hook who knows all right
32:27the fight doctor is ready with our post-fight interview this should be interesting let's go to ferdy ferdy
32:32you may have given us one of the most blazing fights of the year thus far uh let's get the
32:37introductions out of the way i have to say happy belated birthday to my nieces and to my mother

32:47get down to this exciting fight first the reaction two minute rounds when you had them nailed you know
32:54i said gosh is that a little short then i heard the corner complaining about it so it's just a thing of
